magicthegathering.com says that "Duels of the Planeswalkers" will be demoing for Xbox and PC at the Penny Arcade Expo later this month. Is this something new, or could it be an Xbox Live Arcade port of the old PC game? "Duels of the Planeswalkers" was the name of one of the Microprose MTG's expansions, so is that what we're getting?
There was a Magic game for the Dreamcast in Japan.
I've always wondered why they never tried another single-player experience. It wouldn't be THAT hard to program AI for a narrow set of out of print cards, like Mirage Block or something. Imagine a singleplayer console game with drafts and contructed once you unlock cards via a "card shop" style campaign. Then put out a new block of cards every year, Tony Hawk or Madden style. I'd pay $60 for that.
I didn't see anything about it at the PAX website, nor is there an entry in gamefaqs. Maybe someone else will have more look searching for info on this? It's hard to believe that a videogame from a big brand like Magic can be developed without anything showing up somewhere...

Maybe that's why Eventide got spoiled so quickly... they were focusing on keeping this a secret!
In their Feburary press release they said "Stainless Games will develop a game using the Magic: The Gathering IP for both Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PC". http://www.stainlessgames.com/news/go/
Looks like thats what they do, update and re-release games for Xbox LIVE Arcade. Red Baron (Sierra), Astroids, Tempest, Battlezone Missle Command, to name several.
Hmm... It could be that they are porting Shandalar to Xbox Live with an updated rulessystem and library to check out if it's feasible to let it have MTGO too... As to why they would release it on PC as well, no clue...

They would release it on PC too because it doesn't take loads of additional effort to, and if they are updating the rules and library, people would certainly be interested in buying it.

As I understand it, the real difficulty lies in creating an AI that occasionally makes mistakes.
Every real player makes the occasional suboptimal play. Playing against an AI that doesn't would be difficult to the point of being unfun.

The AI for the PC game was a little...interesting.
Sometimes they would mana burn themselves instead of casting a spell, the AI didn't know how to hold back removal/threats, and most of the decks the computer opponents played had hilarious cards like Magical Hack in them.

Also, something else about the information provided on mtg.com today is that the new site will have a 'draft test' app on it. If this is borrowed from Duels, it might be interesting to see. Everyone remembers Shandalar from the PC game, but it also had sealed deck in it.
Anyway, very much looking forward to more information about this.

Creating an AI that doesn't make mistakes is pretty hard.
Mostly because it's difficult to objectively rate board positions (as in chess) based on hidden information. (Humans act based on what they think their opp has in their hand.) Additionally there are just too many pieces (cards) and possible interactions to create an effective rating system.
That said the Magma AI isn't bad and at least avoided some of the Shandalar-level mistakes. It's not going to help you practice for the Pro Tour, but it can introduce people to Magic and be a fun game. Like most computer games you can always give the AI unfair advantages as well to make things interesting. (Taking down the 200-life boss was fun! )

interesting might not be the best choice of words. a friend of mine played Shandralar as a Let's Play for Something Awful, and the first AI enemy he faced blocked a 1/1 with his time elemental

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing a non card game Magic Video game. Maybe something that just uses the IP without having to make the connection to the card game so panifuly obvious. A nice turn based strategy/roleplaying game like Disgaea or Final Fantasy Tactics could be cool and a fun new way to experince magic. It just seems to me that they need to do something diffrent here. Heck I'd throw down 50 bucks for a platformer featuring the Chandra or something like that. My point is that while the focus of magic should be the card game, there's no reason a video game made with the IP has to be in that vein also.

Other fun interaction: Juggernaut that just got cast plus them attacking. Apparently, since Juggernaut always attacks, nobody bothered to make the AI check for untapped Juggernauts as blockers.

Tarmogoyf has no evasion, yet it sees tonnes of play. What makes this any different?
Yeah I have Shandalar on my PC and laptop. It's a hoot. I'm sure it'll be something like Battleground though, and you'll be one of the 5 main planeswalkers.

I play that game too. Not quite sure why so many people hate that game. I play it every now and then too. Mono White is easily the strongest.

They already tried this.
It was called MTG Battlegrounds.
It sucked gigantic... noodles.

i'm in the camp that thought Battlegrounds was kind of a cool game, but more of a Live Arcade type game. it can be a very challenging game, in a very different way than Magic the card game, which i think turned a lot of card players off of it. but it used Magic flavor in a very innovative way, and kept it a duel, though more action-oriented.
Battlegrounds was entertaining at least- and it was more like a fighting game than any of the genres that he had mentioned.
Battlegrounds was the oddity they made when trying to make a non card game that played like the card game. This is why I want them to stay away from making stuff like this and just think of the IP instead of the mechanics. Battlegrounds used mana and involved casting spells in a very stupid way that made it feel like they were putting a Bigfoot in ballet slippers. What I'm talking about is a nice old fashion RPG like Final Fantasy or a turn based strategy game Diesaga. If you don't know what I'm talking about try Google instead of assuming either or those is like Battlegrounds.
Also I'm not opposed to a Platformer like Prince of Persia or something nice and diffrent. Heck, you know what would be alot of fun. Playing as a spell tossing Urza or Chandra in a First Person Shooter. Yeah, cast some shocks and summon creatures to clear the goblin caverns for you.
Battlegrounds was Battleground and like it or not, it certainly wasn't the huge commercial success they wanted it to be.

While Battlegrounds is another game, does it even come close to the popularity of Shandalar? Since we know Wizards does quite a lot of market research, I'd be very surprised if they remade any of those old games, and didn't start with Shandalar.
Oh goodness, if they remake Shandalar, I'll be so pleased! That is one game that I never get tired of, even though I wish that the Legends expansion that was added to it was actually complete. Even if they re-made this game with core-set only cards, I would buy it.
The idea of releasing set updates is awesome, although I think this may be far-fetched since WotC already uses a lot of its resources making sure that the AI on MOTO works correctly.
Either way, there's no question that I would pay for a remake of Shandalar.
If they do, I hope there's an option for turning sound effects off (that always bugged me).

Microprose has folded, and the game ran on an incredibly outdated rules system.
It must be a new game, but I am extremely confused as to the duplicated name choice.
