This thread is for the discussion of my latest article, MTGCast #123: Confirmed Conflux Cardnames!. We would be grateful if you would let us know what you think, but please keep your comments on topic.
I'll have to say, i am never bored when i listen in, even when someone is missing for one reason or another.
As for the Conflux card list, which i am SO stoked for, the thing that makes me feel all happy-go-lucky is the name Thornling, which inspires me to think its a Morphling/Torchling addition. Here's what i would think would be cool;
Thing is though it will probably end up being lamer, maybe:
Great show guys. Sadly I have no sexy pictures but I have a great PR story.
Featuring BLIGHTNING.
At the beginning of our PR only one other guy beside me was playing blightning even though it was an amazing card. The first time I cast blightning I had to call it out in a loud and very purposeful way, which was echoed by the store owner. As the day goes more people chime in when a blightning is cast and on the last round of the first tourney everybody that could play the card was playing it and even quietly speaking the name caused echoes of blightning to be called out. The second tourney I was in will actually be recorded on my DCI as the "BLIGHTNING" tourney. Without being there the story is not as good since you can't hear us say it but the amazing viral style was overwhelming. I actually won a DCI Island because of this since the store owner thought it would be cool to give out a few cards just when "the next person successfully cast, announced, and paid for the spell specifically announcing the spell in a loud and purposeful way." It was very cool.

I almost won my prerelease on saturday by playing a "mono-red" deck splashing G/W to play 2 Thoctar, the cycle cost of the red spell and a couple of exalted creature.
The rares for my decks were TWO! Hell's thunder, goblin assault and Broodmate Dragon
In one game my opponent was so frustrated because he didn't think that turn 3,4,5 and 6 getting hit with a 6/6 hell's thunder was fair(thanks to the two exalted Sqires I had in play)
And for the Conflux card i've chosen the nameNoble Hierarch:
Yet another great show guys.
Seems like the pre-release events just about everywhere needed more cow-bell.
Hoping WoTC re-assesses this move.
Although I was happy to see a pre-release event closer to home (I would have had to drive more than an hour to Toronto), I had to work . . .WAH !
Anywho - based on comments / opinions heard all over teh internets including Monday Night Magic, I will most likely take a swing at a Bant set constructed deck.
I was hoping to run Esper to serve up dozens of fresh 'Blue Dumplings' (aka Homonculus) but alas it was not to be given only one weak generator.
Great show, even without Tom...shame he can't be on as often.
In my city it seems people had fun, I have no PR story, but I did attend a wedding and help with the ceremonies (managing a zerg rushed drink stand when your assigned partner was double booked into the music team?! Oh boy...), so far I hear I didn't miss much, except for a guy who ran 2 Scourglass and faced Esper in his last round for epic blowout.
>_>
Anyway...my imagination for some cards?:
I am totally not demanding hyper-powered cards and a Counterspell (har har...Countering spells for GG = Countersquall? Only in bizarro world I guess)
Exploding Borders - 2R - Uncommon
Deal X damage to target player or creature. X equals the number of basic land types that player controls.
As the shards came together, borders would begin to crumble and an influx of the exotic would ensue, none of it pleasant.
Mirror-Sigil Sergeant - 1W - Human Soldier - Rare
Mirror-Sigil Sergeant has Vigilance as long as you control another creature.
U: Creatures you control gain +0/+1 until end of turn
G: Creatures you control gain +1/+0 until end of turn His sigils never distinguished only him, but all around him
Hi this is Tweaker from Cardhoarder.com. Great show guys. I had to miss the Shards of Alara prerelease because of a work schedule conflict. The set looks to be really fun to play. Looking forward to it coming online!
Here's my hope for Kaleidostone for the Conflux card name spoiler.
hey guys this is mrme355, and I would just like to thank you for another great show. I too had to miss the alara prerelease due to a scheduling conflict, but I'm sure it must have been great. The only concern I did have though was that there would be an unfair advantage to those who opened mythic rares such as sarkon vol, but i guess that was not the case. From the conflux card list I chose Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer, because a "profiiteer" seemed very interesting to be, especcially to emulate that flavor on a card. So here you go:
Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer - UUB - Mythic Rare
Creature - Human Wizard Legend
Shroud T: Draw a Card, then Discard a card and put a profit counter on Gwafa.
Pay 2 life: Put a profit counter on Gwafa.
Remove 3 profit counters from Gwafa, draw 2 Cards. "Incredible gains only made him want more, at any cost"
- Tezzeret, Etherium Sculpter
1/3
I had a lot of fun at the pre-release, but I wished that the prize payout was a little better. I went 3-1 and got 2 packs for my efforts.
Most fun moment of the pre-release: Noticing the interaction between Stoic Angel and Angelic Benediction. My opponent had the Angel, I had the Angelic Benediction. Awkward to be hosed by your own card.....
Mockup cards? could only think of one:
Bone Saw 3B
Creature - Human Warrior T: Destroy target Spider.
3/3
I went first place in a Sunday prerelease. 4-0 and got 9 packs (at the final table I was in second cause of tie breakers...there were 13 people and first place after round 3 beat bye in round 1, so I had to play it out). I played a RWG deck that splashed black for 2 Executionors Capsule and the Vampire.
One game I got up to 63 life cause I had the Angel and the 1/3 reach Exalted creature. I kept attacking with the 5/1 ogre to play around the RFG attacking creature with super cycling. I also had lots of the 5 power matter creatures so my deck was just crazy good.
Each round I went 2-1.
1) I lost to Ajani
2) I lost to the creature that RFGs all lands
3) double super cycled Resounding Thunder
4) Rafiq the Many (my naya battle mage wasnt enough since he could still attack with just one guy and double strike me)
In my prize packs I didn't open anything too spectacular other than a Stoic Angel. I got two of the copy 5 permanents Ultimatum (or as I like to call it...worst mana accelerator...lets go from 7 to 12!)
One guy had a rediculous sealed pool...he got 2 Sarkan Vol! He got reimbursment for the cost and then some.
I have inside sources that tell me Mana Cylix is going to be a 1 mana artifact that lets you filter for any color. I can't give out any names, but I heard it from a friend of a cousin's spouce that sold coffee to a WotC employee at Starbucks.

Exalted works only when your own creatures attack alone, as does Angelic Benediction. You were hosed by a misreading of the cards.
@ Flow of Maggots: Wrong-o. I was able to keep all his creatures tapped because I would only attack with one guy and tap the Stoic angel. Stoic Angel only lets each player untap one creature per turn, so my opponent got hosed by his own Stoic Angel. He couldn't mount any offense whatsoever.
i didn't get a chance to go to a pre-release, the local card shop here closed down at the release of eventide, unforturately the closest one is an hour one way.

Here's my Prerelease story. I went on Saturday to my local store (I couldn’t go to the big prerelease in the area because it’s kind of far). There ended up being like 30 people in the prerelease and I ended up opening a really good pool. I could have probably gone 5 color or jund but I ended up going heavy into bant with some decent cards.
I ended up playing a deck that everyone at the prerelease was calling “Team Exalted.” I opened up a Stoic Angel, Battlegrace Angel, Sigiled Paladin, Akrasan Squire, Court Archers, Guardians of Akrasa, and a Waveskimmer Aven. I remember winning one game with an attacking 8/10 Waveskimmer Aven. It was pretty awesome but weird at the same time becuase I remember not even liking the Exalted mechanic when the cards were being spoiled. I placed 2nd out of the prerelease and got 6 packs. I remember winning games with just 1 Battlegrace or Stoic Angel.
In the second flight I ended up playing a slower deck with “power of five” creature shenanigans. The deck didn’t really do that well as I got blown out of most games with opponents with bombs and I had very few ways to deal with them other than Angel’s Song (I ran two because my deck was really slow). I ended up placing 10th with a less participants. I didn’t play Sunday because I wanted to draft but I nobody to draft with.
I was really disappointed with the prize support for the prereleases, though, and I agree with you guys that the winners probably should have won more packs, but getting two Ajani Vengeants for coming seems good.
I really want to play a Stoic Angel Aggro-Control deck, but I probably won’t have enough cards for it for FNM becuase as you mentioned I only have a few copies of some of the required cards. I’m not sure what my local store is doing because they mentioned they might have sealed instead of standard, which would be interesting. I really like the Shards set and I am looking forward to the upcoming PTQs.
Also, Gavin, you talk about Hindering Light and it’s potential in Standard?
I went to a 27-man prerelease on Sunday at a nearby store, somehow managing to be early, despite my paranoia about being late (the owner really likes to keep tournaments on a tight schedule, which is a good thing... most of the time). So we get the product, and after getting the damn Ajani Vengeant hidden out of sight, pull open my tournament pack, look towards the back, and see...
I kid you not. So that was obviously the basis of my deck, but after opening some fun Esper stuff and a hell of a lot of manafixing in the boosters, I added a pair of Tower Gargoyles, some more Exalted men, a pair of Executioner's Capsules, Sedris, the Traitor King (I had four sources of red from obelisks and the taplands, so he was never dead), a bunch of removal a la Oblivion Ring and two Bant Charms.
So in the end I had this nutty WUbrg deck with loads of fat fliers, plenty of manafixing and a fair amount of quality removal.
First match was pretty much a blowout, my opponent kind of sat and twiddled his thumbs while I played Stoic Angel and Battlegrace Angel in successive turns, easily taking the win in the first game. Game two was equally ridiculous, with mana development leading into a turn four Tower Gargoyle and turn 5 Elspeth. The match was over 3 turns later.
Second match I got paired up against the eventual winner and lost game one horribly a Broodmate Dragon while I just couldn't draw any answers. Game two took quite a while, but I eventually managed to beat down for the win with my fliers. Game three he landed a turn five Broodmate Dragon, and while I managed to get rid of both dragons after a few turns, he shot me with a cycled Resounding Thunder for the win.
Third match, going into the 1-1 bracket, I landed a pretty easy match against a relatively weak Naya deck. Two games of various nasty things involving angels and planeswalkers, and it was over.
I don't quite remember what my opponent played in the fourth match, but it was largely irrelevant, due to some nasty manascrew. Game one I couldn't draw more than two mana sources, and lost as a result. Game two he suffered from obscene manascrew. Game three was honestly quite silly - my opponent mulled down to four on the play, keeping a hand of four lands, the first he had seen. He led with a tapland, then proceeded to topdeck beater after beater while I was slowly developing my mana, as appears to happen in the first 3 turns of this format. On my fourth turn I dropped a Stoic Angel, but it saw an Oblivion Ring. I started to flood, and went to one life before I found any answers. I held out for at least six turns with topdecked men and removal, but finally lost to a Resounding Thunder, to which I had no answer (damn you, sided out Hindering Light!).
So, I was in a disappointing 2-2 with a pretty nutty deck, and went to play my last match, hoping to at least salvage some ratings. And, well, I did. Game one took quite a while, with an Elspeth finally breaking the stalemate by giving my flyers a size advantage. Game two was quite ridiculous, going the same way as the first, except my Elspeth met an Oblivion Ring, stalling the board further. Eventually I topdecked Sedris, sent a bunch of my men in, resulting in several trades, used my Oblivion Ring to bring my Elspeth back, made a man, and passed the turn. My opponent drew a card then passed. I have 12 lands in play, Sedris in hand, and both my Angels in my graveyard. I drop Sedris, who meets... Gather Specimens. I sigh, then pump my Soldier with Elspeth, and swing for the win. While he had a Bant Charm in hand, he had to tap out to use Gather Specimens ;).
So in the end I went 3-2, finishing 11th, out of the prizes on tiebreakers. Damn you, people drawing into top 8 and being 3-1-1!
Best play of the day was my friend making an intentional play mistake in the last round to avoid humiliation by decking himself.
As for the Conflux card...
Esperzoa
Rare
3WUB
Artifact Creature - Illusion (take that, logic!)
Flying
Whenever another non-token artifact creature you control is put into a graveyard from play, put two tokens that are copies of that creature into play.
3/3
Thornling 3GG: Creature – Fungus Shapeshifter G: Thornling gains super-shroud until end of turn. G: Thornling gains trample until end of turn. G: Thornling gains vigilance until end of turn. G: Thornling gets +1/+1 until end of turn. 3/3; Rare
All those abilities are in color, no? Just my hope!!! =)
Indestructable, Haste, Vigilance, Doublestrike, Landwalk, Flying, Protection from all colors, Protection from artifacts, Shroud, Unblockable, Deathtouch, Trample, Flanking, Shadow, Banding, Fear, Provoke, Lifelink, Wither.
If Apocalypse hydra would be destroyed, regenerate it.
Madness WWWUUUBBBRRRGGG
When Apocalypse Hydra comes into play, remove the top five cards of your library from the game. An opponent separates those cards into two piles. You may play any number of cards from one of those piles without paying their mana costs.
When Apocalypse Hydra comes into play, choose five permanents you control. For each of those permanents, you may search your library for a card with the same name as that permanent. Put those cards into play tapped, then shuffle your library.
When Apocalypse Hydra comes into play, target opponent sacrifices a creature, discards three cards, then loses 5 life. You return a creature card from your graveyard to your hand, draw three cards, then gain 5 life.
When Apocalypse Hydra comes into play, creatures you control get +5/+5 and gain first strike, lifelink, and trample until end of turn.
When Apocalypse Hydra comes into play, destroy three target permanents.

Hey, I just have to mention that during the cast you talked about that 0/1 pinger with unearth in red. You said you could attack, have the opponent block thinking their creature with 1 more toughness would survive, and unearth to do the extra damage. Well I'd just like to point out that you can only unearth as a sorcery, so that wouldn't work...
Other than that great cast, and I'm really excited to draft this new set!

I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.
The PR story that I have isn't really on how I did (subpar with jank rare pulls) we did run a sealed and one draft at our shop though so not too bad. But the story was when I should up to the store there was a sign on door saying Beware live squirrel inside. Well of coarse I asked the owner about it, and he said that squirrel scampered up in the ceiling tiles and can't find him to get him back out.
Well he had an idea if he saw the squirrel that everyone should try to help him get the squirrel or shew it outside. Well about 4 hours or so into the pre-release the owner yells squirrel and about 15 to 20 people jump out of their seats and start chasing this squirrel in mid tournament And after 5 minutes or so of this going on chasing wildlife around the store, the squirrel won and got back up in the ceiling tiles.
I guess in a store that deals with magic, don't leave any squirrel tokens laying around after closing

The Merciless Lord of Torture, Permanently Bound To: ">[THE PACK] 11/5/63 - 11/25/09 Goodbye mom, i'll always love you...
I wish that I had some amazing story about myself and the prerelease tournament that I went to (one of the in-store ones) but frankly I was simply solid. Pulled a pair of Woolly Thocktars and removal and went at it etc. This story is about my friend.
Going into this prerelease all that my friend had ever played of MTG was a little bit of constructed with myself and two FNMs. He hadn't ever built a deck on his own before. He had also never played a limited event. Ever.
The store was given minimal time to create our sealed decks so he cobbled together something that turned out to be a monster. His record was 2 wins 2 losses but in every best out of three round he won once at least. During this time I remember his final game of round 1 and his last two games that he played the best. He had 8 lands in play and draws his next card and is looking at it completely confused while he is staring down the barrel of a Battlegrace Angel that was going to kill him in the next turn and calls the store manager over to figure out what it did. He looks down at his ground forces (three 2/2 that matched his opponents army) and then slapped down a cycled resounding thunder that took the steam completely out of his sails (for the next three turns anyway).
Round 2 he managed to win in three games, but the final game of round 3 leads to his final round. He had 3 vigilence creatures in play including a stoic angel (having splashed blue in confused the heck outta me till i saw the card) only to tap them all down during his attack. His opponent said nothing but calmly killed him the next turn before he realized that he had tapped his creatures down and was told that nothing could be done.
Last round: he kicked ass. He was stuck facing the player who had gone 2 and 1 bye but lost to the guy who eventually won the tourney. I got to watch almost the whole thing having walked over my last opponent and saw his turn 10 or so play: Godsire. This time when he dropped Stoic Angel it locked his opponent rather than himself.
The final round was back and forth the whole game with neither myself nor his opponent paying much attention to this little Jund Battlemage slowly making an army of 8 tokens on the field...only to have drop a Thorn Thrash Viashino that ate the tokens and became a monster. next turn a Godsire, token friend and a 18/18 viashino clobered his full life opponent that was a turn away from killing him via Ajani Vengent.
Hope you enjoyed the story cause I could hardly believe how much my buddy improved (let alone built a deck as good as he did having never built a deck before). He may have finished out of the prizes, but I get the feeling that I may have finally converted him onto the true path away from Yu-Gi-Oh cause the first thing he did when we got back home was tear apart my sealed deck to get the Naya cards he wanted to finally make a deck of his own!

"I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk? Yeah, i pretty much win this week.

Other than that great cast, and I'm really excited to draft this new set!
I am John Galt.

Hey mustanglover,
It does work, the damage stays until end of turn. So after combat and in your second main phase, you can unearth and ping their guy to an early death!
Cheers,
Tom

Tibalt & His Devils vs. Avacyn's Inquisitors
My EDH decklists
