agree, i think duelist might be a mini-solution for the current meta.

as what the article said, 5color control likes to run spot removal in the form of bant charm, shriekmaw, condemn and the like.

also, the rogue can give 2 toughness critters some fits (yes, im looking at you kitchen finks)

good work and congratulations. hope the duelist steals you more success.

Hmm, I think the second Toast player misplayed pretty badly. As you said, he wanted to play a four mana spell, but he couldn't because the Cursecatcher was around. What I would have done in his place is let the Cursecatcher eat the Cryptic Command (choosing tap and draw during your combat step), then Wrathed next turn. The second cursecatcher was harsh but a fifth land solves the problem, y'know?

Otherwise, a good article.

This proves how powerful testing and "going rogue" can be: I can't wait for the follow up!

It's probably not worth the discussion, but can this deck be ported to Extended? What would your deck again from that cardpool?

Yes. A thousand times yes. They lured me in with Ivory Tower and Zuran Orb, and I kept telling myself "I can quit whenever I want...just look at that untapped disk". That was ten years ago man.....

Uh....

STIFLE.

EDIT: Your list needs more unsummon and less 4-of legends. =/

Unsummon is terrible and Sygg is awesome. Running 4 of a legend that wins games (and your opponents desperately want to kill) is the right move. And what are you going to do... unsummon Shriekmaw, Mulldrifter and Kitchen Finks?

All hail the River Guide!

No, he's right, only a n00b would play the deck that the OP played. He completely lucked out, and for proof that he has no skill, all you need to look at is the fact that he's a judge (and a "homemaker").

You know....

I like Merfolk but somehow I just can't get this thought out of the back of my mind that your report is biased.

Against RDW // DDW I know for a fact that Merfolk has a 20% macthup. The only matchup that Merfolk has a really good chance at right now is Faeries.

I've played alot on MTGO lately against a variety of decks and I was testing Stoic Control and I have come up against alot of Merfolk decks and I've only lost a few times against the deck.

Is Merfolk a good viable deck, probably but beware that you may run into players who are better than your playtest group.

Also I just want to say that I liked both of your articles but I don't feel like Merfolk is the deck to beat right now.

Glad to see Deft Duelist is as good as I thought it was when I first read the Shards spoiler.

Default Andrew

God bless it Andrew, how long have you been writing articles on Salvation? I came here out of boredom and was like, 'oh man who's this moron high on merfolk now?' Imagine my surprise to realize that its you! (not very suprised, actually)

heh, just kiddin amigo. seriously though, very cool that you're writing and I hope to see a report on Saturday. Also very excited for States and I can't wait to see you there. Sorry about the other week when I wasn't very friendly after my mana screw g3, but it wasn't you obv. I don't normally get worked up about that kinda thing, but man is that annoying especially when you're the only good player there; I don't need to worry about fumbling games on mana against anyone else you know? Also, I'm like what 0-4 against you in sanctioned matches? I have better win percentages against pros :\ I pretty much only come down there to see if I can beat you finally ><

Anyway, for content:

I feel that Sygg is a beating, and definitely the best card in that deck - I'll actually agree that four is probably the right number. For some reason I have this feeling that I would run three instead, but I can't think of a logical explanation as to why.

Deft duelist is good enough to run main; either that guy or Knight of Meadowgrain. I really like the lifegain against red, but Shroud can be nuts. Tough call.

If you haven't tested Windbrisk in merfolk yet, its insane and you should at least try it on Friday before States.

:end content

You're a jerk for not testing with me on MWS. Download the program and play magic cards with me dood. MWS > better testing than using real cards.

And then we'll get Andrew to use AIM and stuff... yeah right. ¬_¬

Good luck at States, all, and drop some feedback if you run Merfolk. I will beat our dear author here if he does not write an article about his matches.
