Not so fantastic in Constructed, but an absolute bomb in Limited. Bull Cerodon, slower, but with much more dominating presence on the board.

This card really god damn makes me sad... They obviously don't test limited during development anymore and don't want enjoyable limited environments which take at least a slight amount of skill. They want a format which consists mainly of "Have an answer now or lose," which to be honest, isn't all too interesting.

Could be a fun one or two of in Realm Razer or Naya Aggro. Getting it out turn 3 should provide atleast one good smack with it. And unless they blow it, they'll probably avoid attacking do to the sheer punishment of being blocked by him.
He dies to removal, yes, but nearly every creature does. I'm going to test him out for a little bit, and if he proves worth the investment then I'll have some fun with him.
And apparantly Apocalypse Hydra is a mythic rare. Who pictured that coming?

Phylactery Lich will forever be known, to me at least, as Pimpin' Lich. Get up on it, suckas.

Well, it is a rare...they're allowed to print bomb rares. (see: Time Spiral block)
And come on, every creature is "have an answer or lose." Some are just much better than others

It annoys me that I'll likely rarely see his "if blocked" ability in effect, almost always they just won't attack. The only time they will it will either be an alphaa strike and game anyways or just a bigger creature which would have to be pretty big.

The card is no worse than a variety of limited bombs at the rare slot in past and present sets. Anyway, the card is awesome in casual multiplayer. I think this falls right into the "spider" category (cards that dissuade your opponents from attacking/messing with you) right?

I'm not really talking about any creature. There just are quite a few (well, a hell of a lot, more so) creatures that not only are really undercosted (this thing costs about 3 too cheap) cards in this limited format that in practically any board position will shift it so heavily into the owner of the cards favor.
Do people actually enjoy Alara limited? I mean I could understand maybe if you generally lose in limited that since now you have a chance to win 50% of the time you enjoy it more since winning is better than losing... This format is just terrible in so many ways, and this cards existence will make games even less enjoyable unless you have an o-ring at the right time, and didn't already waste it on another early bomb.

If I have a big 6/6 trampler that dissuades them from attacking, that seems pretty good. This guy I think could easily find a role as a 1 or 2 of finisher style card.
Oh I know she is, I was referring to the fact that the flavor text and nickname match.
Oh, so "Mayael's Retaliator" was just a nickname? Coz iirc, there was a Mayael's Retaliator on the leaked CON list. So they were the same card after all?.
Sorry to sound smart-arse-ish.

Well they were, just we never really figured out why the names where changed. The flavor text hints to how Meglonoth could be the Retaliator, etc, etc.
I guess that's instant win in limited. Constructed, I have a deck that would like a copy.
If it were 5/5, it could be uncommon. Nothing about it is all that special, complicated, etc. But as a 6/6, definitely rare status, because it's quite powerful.
Another cost that would work for this creature is 5GG.
Meh, if it sticks, you win.. same as Godsire, or Bull Cerodon, or any of those huge guys from Alara. But it's still easily O-Ringed, tapped down, Executioner's Capsule'd, or Cancel'd.

The ability triggers before damage step, so an alpha strike wouldn't even be enough. Righteousness + Person who thinks like you = Win game for me. >_> If people cant see how good this is or where they would play it, you all REALLY should stop holding onto thier counter spells.
Every Naya deck WILL be running this card, and possible Mayael's Retaliator too.
It's understandable blue control players would be shocked and in denial at the notion of this card, since their decks have been dominating multiple formats for an eternity yet they've curiously never once had to deal with any counter-hosers that weren't ineffectual, narrow CRAP.
I really feel that Naya ramp is the only possible home for this guy in standard, which isn't a bad thing neccessarily.
If he was a 5/5 with some sort of unsolvability he would be awesome. As is, he's decent.
If you don't like losing to threats, you should try to include answers in your deck next time. Good answers to any permanent are available for each colour. Maybe you should even think which threats to use those answers on, so you don't lose to Bull Cerodon after blindly o-ringing that fourth turn Rhox Charger.
Follow this advise and you will see your winning percentage rise and whining percentage plummet.
Agreed.
I consider myself a fairly good limited played (~1820 rating), and can usually win through bombs. The trick is...as SpiritMirror mentioned...to not waste removal. The common problem I see people doing is going ballistic with their removal and removing all your threats to early. Then they just straight up die to a fatty because they chose not to hold their bone splinters.

So were you agreeing to the clear attack on me, which was all that post consisted of?
When I say "waste" I mean use on a Mycoloth or something. It was almost pointless because you'll still lose because you still won't have enough to deal with everything. There is no way to even play through it cause you'll still lose anyway.
How the hell could anybody call a format where things like Flameblast Dragon, Mycoloth, Bull Cerodon, among seemingly infinitely many other cards which are clearly undercosted and overpowered "balanced?" I mean, even the biggest scrub can completely mess up on drafting/building their deck, but one single card will win it for them.
How is Alara balanced though? The only reasons I've heard so far are because somebody said I wasted my O-Ring on a bad creature... which never happened...

Are you not playing threats of your own? It's balanced like everyone has said...I don't see what the issue is here. The difference between the "scrubs" and better players are timing of the spells...so which are you?

That's not really at all what the point is. There are just many creatures that are way too efficiently costed and make too big of an impact on the game, usually relatively early in the game. These must be answered extremely quickly with the right draw or else the game is over. In addition to that there are random spells such as Naya Charm which will likely cause the game to end abruptly unless you happen to have an answer at the proper time. There is less room given in order to answer these overpowered cards than there has been with many other bombs over the years, and they will singlehandedly put the game into one persons' favor. It isn't even a matter of "wasting" the removal spell. Just having it is necessary for the game to continue. And again for acknowledging that Alara is not a very good limited format I get another person questioning my skill. The point isn't whether I am good or bad at the game, it's that Alara is awful and hardly enjoyable.

Out of sheer curiosity, what would you cost Cerodon at? Flameblast Dragon is certainly good, but it's not that much better in limited than Shivan Hellkite. Would you say that the Hellkite is undercosted too? Mycoloth only has an effect worthy of its cost if you nuke your own guys, and it's just begging to become card disadvantage. Should it thus cost the same as Verdant Force? Like it or not, creature quality has gone way, way up as design has realized that as long as removal is good, any creature will be subpar. This is doubly true for creatures at mana costs of 6+. There are always going to be bombs, and there are always going to be answers. Since you already know what the bombs are, it's up to you to find the answers.
I can't speak from a ton of experience, as I've only been drafting since Mirrodin, but so far this is probably my second favorite limited format after Ravnica. The effort they've put into making sure every shard is not only playable, but good enough to win with, really shows. The format rewards those who pay attention to signals and make a concerted effort to ensure consistency. A well-constructed consistent deck will wipe the floor with the guy who pulled a huge bomb 85% of the time. The other 15% happens. It has always happened since the start of the game, and will likely continue to happen into the future. The best you can do is try to ensure those situations come up as rarely as possible. If you aren't capable of that, then expect to be blown out by Dragons and Leviathans.
Flameblast Dragon, Bull Cerodon, and Mycoloth don't see lots of professional play. They aren't undercosted and overpowered, your definition of what is undercosted and overpowered is off- since both of those terms take on new meaning with each new set.

Mayael is some sort of an elven leader (i.e. Anima) to the Cylian elves who's said to have direct contact with the "Gargantuans" of Naya.
