I decided to stick with the nearly all basic land domain deck and I really need some opinions. A few things to note though. I took out prismatic omenbecause I was achieving domain very often and every time i drew it it was a dead card. I'm a little if-fy about shard convergence, too. I'd usually reached domain by the time i could play it, too. All I know is that it is definately lacking in removal. I've been testing out Bant Charm and so far it's been doing pretty well. So, suggestions?
Update: This deck was named Skittles because achieving Domain was like "Tasting the Rainbow". It started out as a Naya-centered (RGW) deck, but now more testing is being done on Jund-centered (BRG) decks. These Jund-centered decks are being called M&M's as a throwback to the old Skittles decks that were Naya-centered.
This has come a long way since my original post. A lot of testing has been done, new ideas have been created, lots of cards scrapped, and right now, my current build is this:
There are a couple of Domain deck types that have been tested:
Aggro style decks were determined to be too slow against other aggro decks.*
Cotrol style decks were tested, but they always seemed to be a worse version of 5 colored control.*
Domain Warrior decks were popular for a time. They centered around bramblewood paragon and the many domain creatres that were featured in many builds that also happened to be warriors (wild nacatl, matca rioters, etc.). While the results were positive, the deck was reliant on Bramblewood Paragon and so new cards were tested for the deck that also gave creatures trample (namely Loxodon Warhammer) which gave better results than the Paragon. When the Paragon was scrapped, the deck could hardly be called Domain Warriors as the fact that they were warriors was not essential anymore to the deck.*
Ramp style decks are testing well. In ramp style decks, you ramp into domain quickly and keep on ramping to get out big threats as soon as possible while burning your opponent with Exploding Borders along the way. Threats vary from deck to deck, but Broodmate Dragon has proven to be most valuable since it is two creatures in one, which means it dodges one-for-one removal, causing your opponent to 2-for-1 themselves.*
Mid-range was the style of many decks. Testing has proven well and decks of this type are not out of the question. Dragonsoul Knight was great in this deck, but due to all the cheap and efficient removal going around, more and more people are shying away from using the 5 color pump cycle (Dragonsoul Knight, Paragon of the Amesha, Fleshformer).*
*It is important to note that just because an deck type was determined to be efficient or inefficient does not mean that there is an ideal deck type. If you make a deck using any of these deck types (or even created a new deck type), feel free to post it for critique, etc.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck *********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like to to occur and validate you.
So i want sakura tribe elder and shocklands here but yeah.
Ok so exploding borders is too good not to use. what about garruk? idk he just seems to fit. using basic lands is good, you probably have to run terramorphic expanse
why is there no farhaven elf? Armillary sphere sucks dont run it.
I dont like matca rioters at all.
Dont run might of alara because even though i like it i dont think its the right card for the job
o and to that guy who said ornithopter only is used for chump blocking, sacking for titan and wif warhammer is an idiot....u just eplain 3 solid uses for a creature that costs 0....
Actually, Matca Rioters have been awesome in my testing. It's usually a 5/5 for three and is a great threat.
I was honestly testing out the armilliary spheres. it thins my deck of land and sets me up for domain at the same time. I guess I could test out farhaven elf (or civic wayfinder).
I definately don't think Kaleidostone is worth it. I don't have a problem reaching domain, and a sorcery speed cycler just isn't worth it.
Yep, the borders should be an automatic four of, shouldn't they. Might of Alara has won me so many games, I could consider it one of my win-cons.
I'll look into kitchen finks. I probly won't replace the rioters, but it is a solid card and it does have its synergy with child of alara.
I'll change up the deck a little and test a little bit later.

The obelisk doesn't seem all that great. The abilities aren't too powerful for that much mana investment. It would need testing though, so still going to test a little later when I get time.

for some reason i want 2 worldheart phoenix here. its a card you can play every turn to *big* chump, or compete with bitterblossom. honestly your deck is gonna get to probably as much mana as it wants, and if it goes late the phoenix is a weird 5 color firemane angel without the lifegain.
idk about the lifegain/cycle card theres just gotta be something that requires only one of a certain color or something that allows you to do something better.
Is Maelstrom Archangel that good seems either winmore or hey kill me because im not that good i just have a flashy effect.
Two words. Primal Command. Gain 7 life and search for a creature you need.
Domain decks get flooded with land and land searchers . Primal Command is a good way to search out your creatures and gain life. Also if you need to return a non-creature to the top of the opponents deck as well. I ran them in my play testing and they work wonders. Soul's Majesty for drawing isn't half bad either.
OOoo, forgot about primal command. That is always helpful.
Maelstrom Angel began in this deck as a 4 of then to a 3 of, now its a 2 of, and now im probly gonna remove it. I haven't played anything useful for free (hurray for free wild nacatl :-/) so, it's definately getting replaced. The pheonix is looking pretty good. It'll comeback after Child of Alara blows up the field too. I'm gonna try out soul's majesty. Man, I've got a lot of testing to do.

Dragonsoul Knight just isn't going to cut it here. It may have a cool activated ability, but playing that ability means that you won't be playing any other juicy spells that turn.
Worldheart Phoenix should do pretty well in this deck considering its a creature with recurrability.
I'd pitch the life gain spell with cycling. Life is always a good thing, but something like loxodon warhammer is always going to do the job better. Why do you think Faeries have started using the warhammer lately? Its to keep them ahead in the life race.
Wild Nacatl is good, but too small considering the mana base your running. Since this is domain and your running multiple colors consider running Rhox War Monk or Kitchen Finks. As of late the monk has seen more play in 5cc because of its huge toughness and life gain capabilities. It also runs over creatures and makes up for any loss of life you may have taken on turn 1,2, or 3.
If you include more creatures the deck can use Might of Alara. Gaea's might has seen a lot of play in zoo. This isn't a zoo deck so your probably going to see blockers by the time you can play it big.
You have some big threats with Maelstrom and Child of Alara so thats pretty good.
Other than the creatures I talked about you've got something good going.

A couple things:
-Prismatic Omen is horrible. Shard Conversion is OK, but I haven't liked it in testing.
-Worldly Counsel is Impulse! I've really liked it.
Are we running control or aggro? There's an aggro deck, but it's a lot slower than a normal aggro ... it's midrange, and I think it's worse than Doran Rock, while having the same weaknesses. That's never good.
For the OP [which is that pre-stated midrange], I'd put in a fourth Armillary Sphere and fourth Exploding Borders [Borders is so nuts in this deck], and add a 24th land - taking out the playset of Sylvan Scrying [you have 1 free slot]. Then I'd take out the Maelstrom Archangels and Dragonsoul Knights for other things: Dragonsoul takes your mana and Maelstrom is just a 5/5 basically, the ability's superfluous here. That means you have six slots: you can add a fourth Nacatl if it's been testing well there, or you can play Spore Burst, or if you want to be nuts you can play Manaforce Mace.
OH! You are missing Viashino ... the double-strike guy that is a 1R 1/1 and pumps for GB. You want to run him. He's good with that Might of Alara thing.
So currently:
-3 Dragon guy
-4 Sylvan Scrying
-2 Maelstrom Archangel
+4 Viashino
+1 Armillary Sphere
+1 Exploding Borders
+1 Wild Nacatl
+2 [nothing yet]
At this point, you should probably look at curve:
1:4
2:12
3:4
4:4
5:4
Your 1 drop slot is fine because you play Expanses, and your 2 drop is a bit overloaded. I would add more 3-drops: pick from Rhox War Monk, Kitchen Finks, Spawning Thrinax ... You've got a lot of choices there. Also, you don't have too many 4-drops: Something like Chameleon Colossus would help out there. So this is what I would do from here:
-3 Rampant Growth [I like having 9 2-drops ... you may want to add one back. Also, if the speed's really important, you can cut Armillary Sphere instead. I really like the Sphere though ... at least in control.]
-3 Bant Charm [this is personal preference, but I don't see it here ... I don't know, it just seems ... superfluous. If it's working for you keep it, of course.]
+4 Kitchen Finks[/x]
+4 Chameleon Colossus
That should work better. If Colossus is out of your price range [and I know it's out of mine] ... I'd probably test Incinerate in this slot. It's good in general. [Or you can keep the Bant Charms.]

I've been MWS'ing this one and I liked it. With 12 ramps, I could always get Domain on turn 3 (rarely), 4 or 5. Getting domain doesn't say much though, because by the time you're fetching your domain, your opponent can have responses to everything you play. There's no way, Domain cries for shocklands, or else it'll be just a 4fun deck.
Would Wandering Goblins be a good card in this deck? Assuming your opponent isn't blocking, it can potentially hit a lot of damage by activating its ability multiple times. A 25/3 attacking goblin anyone? lol
It seems to be doing rather well as a ramp deck. I will not ever take out Rampant Growth or Exploding Borders. They are that crucial.
I love whoever suggested Farhaven Elf. They help out a lot.
The Sylvan Bountys have been doing well. I had to use them a couple of times to save my butt. Primal Command too.
I'm testing out Martial Coup. I needed a ***-ish effect so i went with the one that leaves me with creatures too. Matca Rioters really needs trample, but right now it's just doing ok. Same situation with Wild Nacatl. Dragonsoul Knight has been doing really well. It probably has won me the most games.
The Viashino previously mentioned really isnt good here. It only works with one of my other cards which isn't that good. Definately not this deck.
I'm not entirely sure of Worldly Counsel. I guess I could tweak my manabase and try it out, though. Chameleon Colossus is good in every deck. Might be able to fit him in, but not sure he's needed. He'd probably replace Matca Rioters though.
I'm really iffy about wandering goblins. The reward seems pretty good, especially with the ramp in this deck, but it's so obvious. Maybe it'll finish off the game instead of Matca Rioters.
Guess I need some more testing, eh?

I misread Sylvan Bounty as Sylvan Scrying. What's your metagame like, though?
Dragonsoul just seems ... like he'll be too slow against aggro, and like he'll eat your mana against control. If he's not, I have a pair I can put in my Domain deck.

If we are ramping into Ultimatums and WUGBR activations for knights, why are we not running Feral Hydra, Apocalypse Hydra, Banefire, or even Sigil of Distinction? With all that excess mana we should be running at least a few mana sinks like these big X-costing giants.
I haven't faced too many control decks around here. Lots of aggro and mid-range home brews around here. Especially the FNMs. Not many competitive decks. (Most of us don't have enough money for competitive). So these crazy decks I make actually work sometimes. I won fnm with giants when lorwyn came out. That should tell you about my meta.
Anyway, Dragonsoul Knighthas been doing pretty good against aggro. I love his first strike. It's killed so many creatures for me. Against control, though, it's usually just a removal magnet.
My match up vs control decks haven't been the greatest. I'd say of the (around) 10 control matches I faced, 1 was color screwed (loss) 1 was Land Flooded (loss) 4 more were losses and 3 were wins (1 of which was due to his land screw). I might test wandering goblins in Dragonsoul's place. Seems worth a shot. I can make him big real quick. I'm definately gonna try out garruk and chameleon colossus, too. That's when I get around to testing, though.
Edit: @Chainsawromeo: Sheesh I'm slow. I did try out Apocalypse Hydra, but my heart sank when they top-decked a Path to exile. I guess I can try him out again. How's Feral Hydra testing?
I never really liked fusion elemental. Is it testing good?
Actually, I might try out the sigil of distinction. Definately better than the domain equipment.
I also never liked Spore burst. 4 for 5 creatures wasn't worth it when I can pay 7, wipe the board, and get 5 creatures out of it (I am of corse referring to Martial Coup. Then again, you did say budget...).
How are the titanics anyway? My deck doesn't usually have too many creatures out, so just wondering. Dragonsoul Knight is still good, and Wandering Goblins doesn't seem that bad. You should definately try those out if you're on a budget.
I was wondering, since you have way more plains in your deck, did you consider Qasali Ambusher? I've got a lot of things on my testing list, so that one's not getting tested for probably another week or two, but if you could test it out, tell me how it does.
Oh, genyus ... my last FNM was about 60 players, and while there's some Elementals and mono-white Knight decks [and the like] on the lower tables, they're populated by Kithkin and other stuff at the top. I guess ... we're building for different things.
I was thinking about running the Paragon and the Fleshformer, though - Paragon because it has first strike like the Dragonsoul and gains you life against aggro, and Fleshformer because he kills things repeatedly.
I'd post what I'm running right now, but it's control, unlike the rest of the thread. [Also, it loses to my playtesting deck, which is Unearth/Reanimator ... and that's just a bad sign.] I'll probably get more cards for it on Friday, though, and I'll post a list then.
*edit*
After I get Worldly Counsels I'll post then. Counsel is totally nuts with Domain, it's awesome. Well ... in Draft, anyways.
Got a Maelstrom Archangel so it's in there! And Progenitus! ... Super combo.

There are many differnet types of Domain but the central idea is still there. Domain decks abuse ramp effects (Rampant Growth, Civic Wayfinder, etc.) to gather lands of each basic land types to power up Domain Spells (Exploding Borders, Voices from the Void, etc.) or (in some builds) power out 5 colored creatures or activated abilities (Horde of Notions, Dragonsoul Knight, etc.).
This has come a long way since my original post. A lot of testing has been done, new ideas have been created, lots of cards scrapped, and right now, my current build is this:
10 Forest

I was wondering, since you have way more plains in your deck, did you consider Qasali Ambusher? I've got a lot of things on my testing list, so that one's not getting tested for probably another week or two, but if you could test it out, tell me how it does.
*second edit*
Maybe for aggro, this would work:
4 Terramorphic Expanse
8 Forest
6 Mountain
2 Swamp
2 Plains
2 Island
4 Viashino Slaughtermaster
4 Bramblewood Paragon
4 Civic Wayfinder
4 Matca Rioters
3 Voices from the Void
3 Worldly Counsel
2 Obsidian Battle Axe
4 Exploding Borders
Voices of the Void and 1 Worldly Counsel, +/- Incinerate.
and eyes are full of death besides
but luckily the soul is wise -
it sees beyond my blindness and
forced failure makes a better guise,
so as i come again alive,
it feels like life's a decent plan
