Hi everyone, my EDH group is currently a tight group of about 10 guys who get together on a weekly basis to play. We at first started out with casual fun decks like Akroma, Kresh, Isperia, etc. but it's starting to get a little more cutthroat lately...haha. My surprise deck for next week is going to be based on Hokori, Dust Drinker. I have a skeleton kind of worked up, but I need help with more white/artifact "taxing" effects, Kismet effects, stuff that taps permanents, and maybe just filling in some holes. Here's what I'm working with for a list right now:
I want to run about 48 mana sources. Currently I have 12 artifact mana sources in the deck, since it's so important with Hokori, so I will be working on a 36 land manabase.
Here's what I have in there for taxing effects right now:
In total, I have 93 cards in the maindeck not counting Hokori, so I have 5 cards to work with. I'm concerned I might need more win cons, but if there are any good tax, kismet (don't want Orb of Dreams since it hits me also) or tap effects I'm missing, I can find room. Or, if you have any drop suggestions I'm welcome to hear those as well (Defense Grid for example, is something I'm considering cutting).
EDIT: Trade Caravan is a card I'm considering. Thoughts?
Winter Orb: Isn't that a little redundant when I play Hokori as a general that I can play over and over?
Static Orb: Does that overwrite Hokori, allowing my opponent to untap 2 lands?
Storage Matrix: See Static Orb.
Depends on how much redundancy you want, I suppose.
But it's important to note that Static Orb says permanents, not lands, and so is arguably more powerful.
I'm not sure as to the layering effects and whether Static Orb will let you untap 2 lands even if Hokori is in play.

I'll have to look that up, because that is a key part of the card. If it overwrites my general, seems kind of pointless.
I'd like as many artifacts that produce W mana as possible. Armageddon and Catastrophe might grab a spot. Flagstones and Darksteel Citadel are pretty much always auto-includes for me in EDH.
Just keep in mind that nothing annoys people in multiplayer games more than dropping a static orb or armageddon-ing and you will probably die soon after.

Evil is even, truth is an odd number, and death is a full stop.

That's why I'll be running some good lifegain spells as well:
I'd second Static Orb and Storage Matrix. Looking at the wording, It doesn't seem likely that it would overwrite Hokori. All it does is make it so you can't untap more than two permanents during your untap step, it doesn't let them untap two if something is only letting them untap 1. Same with Storage Matrix, if they want to untap that one land Hokori lets them, they'll have to leave all their creatures and artifacts tapped. =D
Seems like a good deal to me.
Winter Orb is pretty redundant with Hokori, but it is cheaper (which admittedly doesn't mean much in EDH) and can still help lock down if Hokori gets killed too much.

On another note, you are relying very much on your general to be in play, so I suggest Lightning Greaves to protect him from targeted harm. The haste is irrelevant I guess.
Also Whitemane Lion might be good. Just return hokori to your hand to untap all of your lands.
I was already considering Stonecloaker. Greaves is a definite. I'm going to put up an updated version a little later on.
As you can see, I dropped down to 45 mana sources...after realizing the height of my curve is 4. With 10 arti mana producers and 4 ways to thin lands out of my deck, I should be fine with mana.
It seems like you have very few win conditions. What is your plan in that regard? Have you played the deck - has it worked?
What about throwing in the Stuffy Doll / Guilty Conscience combo? I know it only kills one person, but that might be enough to give your other win cons the boost they need. Just an idea.

Don't know if you missed it on purpose, but The tabernacle at pendrell vale would fit pretty well, a little bit of tax redundancy without relying on a critter. Also maybe Maze of Ith, not quite as good of a fit but, still, an extra way to deal with a creature that might still be bugging you?

I didn't miss it, per se, just more like don't want to pay for one, hahaha. Maze was considered, but not tapping for mana means I'd be dropping another card from the MD to make room for it.
Price is a legitimate reason for missing on purpose.
I can see your point on Maze not adding mana, though it does seem like your primary source of mana is going to be artifacts anyway. Though it doesn't add enough to warrant replacing another land, so... yeah.

Mmm extraplanar lens/gauntlet of power as a way of getting double the value out of each basic plains perhaps? I know you only run 17 but it might be worth considering.
A lot of x/x/W decks in my playgroup, I didn't want to run anything that would help my opponents out of "prison."

Remember, with Extraplanar Lens, they have to have the exact same land as you sacrificed. If they're three color, chances are they aren't running too many basics, AND they have to be snow-covered also or it won't work for them. Just something to keep in mind.

We all run Snow-Covereds for Mouth of Ronom, Scrying Sheets, etc. Good point for me to keep in mind though. Doubling Cube wouldn't be bad either. Thanks!
You play glowrider and thorn of amethyst and only 13 creatures? I dont get it... If I were to make a Hikori deck I think it'd be uber-aggro with armageddon and the like...Makes Glowrider, etc. a lot better. Also, I don't especially like Magus of the Tabernacle in this.
I'm probably going to get yelled at for this, because its very craptacular. But I saw a guy do this in a mono-white EDH deck last week (I didn't see the general cause I was rolling on the floor laughing at how his opponent was shut down by this)

I'll have to look that up, because that is a key part of the card. If it overwrites my general, seems kind of pointless.
Also, I'd add Armageddon and Catastrophe to completely dominate, alongside Land Tax. I guess that would mean adding Flagstones of Trokair too.
Thanks, I'll have to find one of those.

Also, Crackdown fits the prison theme. So does Damping Field but I don't know how much you want to be tapping down your own artifacts.
Thanks to Gabgabdevo for the awesome sig image!
I'm always looking for foil Madcap Skills and Ghitu Fire-Eater, [trade thread link forthcoming]
