The large man at the outpost steps forward. "You are going to be traveling south. An outpost we set up as an early-warning system has gone out of contact. There were no indications in their last message that there was any threat. However, that does not discount the possibility that they were overrun quickly. I will send a detachment of guards to provide backup if its necessary. I want you to find out what happened to the guards. I know you are not watch, so, if you accept, you will be deputized for the duration of the commission, and, upon its completion, you will be considered a 'friend of the watch.' Any questions?"

Never forget: there's always someone bigger, better and stronger than you.
Someone once asked me why, when I talk about House Dimir, I don't put the word "the" in front of it.
At the time, I had no answer, but it just came to me.
Do we put the word "the" in front of God?

Cytorix listens patiently, his eyes peering out from the white cloth shielding his face.
"How refrehingly straightforward. Very well, commander.. we will depart at once."
With a polite bob of his head to the commander, Cytorix leans heavily on his staff as he turns to face his new partner.
"I am Cytorix of the Ghitu, friend. I'm sure between the two of us, we'll have things well in hand."
The pair of you, plus six members of the city watch, set out south. The guardsman in charge of the detachment is a little apologetic. "I'm sorry that we can't ride south. A number of our horses have a strange infection and are in the care of the veterinarian."
The journey south is easy. Three separate times, you see what look like bandit raiders, but the presence of six members of the watch seem to deter them.

Cytorix walks silently, loping along easily despite leaning so heavily on his staff.
He cranes his neck from side to side as he walks, taking in the scenery.
As they pass the bandits, he swivels his shrouded head to face them, and nods thoughtfully when they decline to approach.
He smiles slightly at Brominae's question, closing his eyes while managing somehow not to stumble.
"I'd bet a gold piece on the latter. But we should stay sharp for surprises..."
"The outpost was not overrun, so far as we could tell, but we're not dismissing that possibility. But yes, the bandits would be kept in check by the presence of the guard outpost."

A half-day journey south, the group comes upon two men in Watch armor sitting on a fallen tree and conversing. The commander of the detachment walks up to them. "What happened here?"
The first one looks at him and says, "Bugs."
The second one nods and says, "Aye. Bugs."

Before the two can answer, another man in Watch armor comes running up the road, stops abruptly in front of the group and shouts, "No! I won't go back! You can't make me!" He calls up a red mana source and shoots a bolt of lightning at . . .

Do we get the two mana before we lay a land, or is that just in the arena? I'll assume we don't and edit this post if we do!
Can't find the page that tells me how to make the tap symbol, mana symbols, etc.
Cytorix blinked at the approaching figure, and then gaped as lightning erupted from the man's hand at the Watch members beside him.
Even if he had been prepared to cast, nothing in his satchel could have prevented the attack, so Cytorix was limited to stopping it.
He closed his eyes and thought of his home at the foot of the Shivan Mountains. He thought of playing in the foothills and caves, and climbing some of the smaller crags as a boy.
Instantly, a thin red aura appeared around his body, then disappeared as he waved his hand, sending a small orb flying at the crazed Watchman, which halfway to its target materialized as a snarling Goblin who appeared out of thin air, axe in hand, and withut stumbling or losing a step, rushed at the enemy spellcaster.
"Try to take him alive!"
Cytorix called amiably to the small, bloodlusting creature.
OOC: You are correct. And even that rule is somewhat limited. Only certain matches use that old rule.

Appearing unnerved from the surprise attack, Borminae throws back his cloak and whips out his dagger from his belt, taking a wide, low guard stance stance. With a wave of his arm, a pool of pale blue water materializes in front of him.
He closes his eyes for just a second in concentration as a blue faerie rises out of the pool into the air.
Five of the six guards summon a red mana source, while the sixth, the one that was attacked, summons a white mana source. The guards act in concert. The first draws a rite in the air and uses the power it generates to shoot two lightning bolts at the attacker.
Guard 1:
In Play: Mountain x1 (tapped)
Graveyard: Rite of Flame x1 Shock x2
The second guard draws a similar rite in the air and follows it up with a ball of fire and a bolt of lightning
Guard 2:

Graveyard: Rite of Flame x1 Shock x1 Incincerate x1
The third guard draws his own rite and shoots two balls of fire.
Guard 3: Mountain x1 (tapped)
Graveyard: Rite of Flame x1 Incinerate x2
The fourth guard draws a rite and shoots a bolt of lightning while the attacker is engulfed in flames.
Guard 4: Mountain x1 (tapped)
Graveyard: Rite of Flame x1 Shock x1 Fiery Temper x1
The fifth guard, the one who was attacked, uses his mana to heal himself.
Guard 5:
Life: +1
In Play: Plains x1 (tapped)
Graveyard: Healing Salve x1
The sixth guard draws a rite and shoots a ball of fire at the attacker while the attacker is engulfed in more flame.
Guard 6: Mountain x1 (tapped)
Graveyard: Rite of Flame x1 Incinerate x1 Fiery Temper x1
The attacker took a grand total of:
(2+2)+(2+3)+(3+3)+(3+2)+(3+3)=4+5+6+5+6=10+10+6=26 damage in one round.

Borminae does not take for granted that the guard was dead and lays down another pool of mana. He stares intently at the cloud of dust and smoke, waiting for it to dissipate.
The smoke clears and the guard's dead body is lying on the ground, covered in burns. The commander looks over to Cytorix and Borminae. "That was unfortunate. But we don't look for emotionally unstable people to join the Watch. Something made him like this. We should continue on. Something's not right here."

Borminae relaxes his body. His mana pools and faerie disipate into wisps of magic. He stares at the body for one quick moment, before falling in behind Cytorix
