Well this is a themed deck but the point is to try and abuse Marrow Gnawer's ability as much as possible (Umbral Mantle does this best) and generate a lot of mana for a big profane command or death by crypt rats. Other tidbits are Chittering Rats and Sould Foundry to lock out the draw. This is more of a fun deck but it can be very effective.
List looks pretty good. Though my first thought was Whispersilk Cloak would help with the ninjas and protect some of your creatures. Then my second thought was "where is Relentless Rats" immediately followed by "how does relentless rats work in EDH"? If it is like normal Magic, maybe a little more Relentless Rats. Also, I hear Lab Rats with buyback is pretty good in a rat deck.
In another thread it was discussed that Relentless Rats works just like it worked in standard back when it was legal. Essentially the text on the card that allows you to break the rule takes precedence, so you can have as many as you want.
As far as the OP's deck it looks great on paper but as always can you keep your general out long enough to make it effective?
well our group did decide a while ago not to allow more than 1 relentless rats, even if I could, I would not want to run a lot of them. I like having variety in a deck like this, it is what EDH is all about. As far as keeping Marrow Gnawer in play, it has not been too much of a problem especially if you get Rings of Brighthearth or Umbral Mantle out as well (which is not hard with all the tutors I run.
I don't like plague of vermin, the life payment aside it helps your opponent far too much.
I prefer Door of Destinies as it does not have the potential to help my opponent(s). Several in out playgroup have token decks, I would hate to have Coat of Arms backfire on me.
Coat of Arms helps opponents. It helps you more. Door of Destiny doesn't help when you make a ton of rats as much (as your not playing the ability compared to CoA.). Anyways, why do people always say "I prefer (this)" to a good card? its 100 card deck highlander. You need some repitition, you definetly want 2 of a good effect. You don't need to run Coat, but its simply amazing in Marrow Gnawwer decks, so it is your loss (unless your opponents are playing Rhys, then you wont help them as much as you, and if your opponent is playing Rhys, playing Coat will earn you a very reliable friend).
Thousand Year Elixir is a great card with marrow gnawwer, you can play him and have 2 garunteed activations in response to instant speed removal.
Door of Destinies is a good card and unlike Coat of Arms, it will not backfire... There are enough token decks around that it is a valid concern. I am also far more willing to spend .50 cents on Door rather than 6-10 dollars on Coat.
I don't own Thousand Year Elixir, if I find one, I will fit it in.

That I can understand. However, I really just don't get peoples persistance to not run duplicant effects. If a card is good in your deck, then you want as many versions of that card (to a certain extent) that you can find. Thats why constructed formats aren't dominated by decks with 60 1 of cards. That holds more true for 100 card formats, as you want to be able to find the card.
I see what you are saying and I do agree with it. I believe that I have more than enough tutoring to take care of card access and I do run multiples of cards (such as Top, Sylvan Library and Mirri's Guile, heck, my Braids deck runs 4 abyss effects) when possible but when a card that I would never play with otherwise cost more than 5 dollars I need a very good reason to run it.
Ruling for relentless rats per gatherer:
"12/1/2004 This card's text does not override other format-imposed restrictions on the number of cards. For example, in a Highlander format, you would still only be allowed one Relentless Rat."

Ok i fully understand budget concerns, i play on a very tight budget in general myself (when I'm not on MWS)
Thanks for the update! I've been thinking about doing a deck like this for multiplayer, how does it do in the format? Also, Bringer's banned in your list (contains nonblack mana symbols).
oh, I forgot, our group allows the bringers as exceptions...
The deck has a strange ability to do well in both multi-player and 1 on 1. It is competitive and fun. I am a little worried cutting Gate to Phyrexia, but I almost never used it anyways.
I don't think it's in any of the posted Marrow-Gnawer decklists, but Sword of the Paruns seems pretty great for multiple ability uses and for a swarm attack/chump blocking.

re: ninja killer. yes, that's true. It's only rarely a relevant ability, though.
re: Yawgmoth's Bargain. I play that too. Honestly, I like Necropotence better, but in a 100 card highlander deck I'm happy to get either of them.
Edit: Turns out Yawgmoth's bargain is banned. I've taken it out and replaced it with Necrologia

Any thoughts about the following cards?
Thousand-Year Elixir
Phyrexian Plaguelord
Devouring Strossus
Thoughtpicker Witch
Mind Slash
Black Market
Gibbering Descent
Death Cloud
Contamination seems pretty mean.
It fits with the rat theme, but Plague of Vermin would not be a good idea, right?
