Interesting that the city contains only a handful of common artifacts, but I like the flavour of it in this case because every guild member probably carries a signet with them, so that makes sense. A signet is usually a small item like a brooch or ring used to seal a document, like a scroll with wax. It bears the mark or inscription of the person or group the document belongs to.
As a card, it's quite a powerful mana fixer IMO. Also, it's mana acceleration, since it costs 1 and taps for 2. And it doesn't come into play tapped, so on turn three you can tap and get back for a spell, like one of the soldiers we've seen with that cost. And then on the fourth turn you've got four lands and the signet for a total of 5 mana, with no colour problems.
"It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of Sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.'' -Mentat Creed
boros is an interesting name for this guild, not as good flavor-wise as dimir, but nice...and the fact that it's common is suprising, given that wizards doesn't often print common artifacts any more (mirrodin was an exception).
as always, good work R_E and thank you source! have a cookie!
Ergo: These must be the signets by which one recognises another guildmember, that's why they are common. And we all know how they look like, these must be the 'new mana-symbols'
Secundo: it is isn't Flamefist-guild but Boros-Guild
Tertio: logicalwise the other common artifacts of this fourpart-cycle are
oh wow! interesting filter-esque artifacts. Interesting little rings they are (see Tidings for an idea of a signet). About the plants...time for Utopia Tree to go tribal?

ooo, so if there are signets for all guilds... well, the dimir signet should be a fun artifact.
either way, this will see play, and all the other signets too (assuming there will be more, which i belive is a safe assumption.)
Ok, what does this mean for the guildmana-system as we understand it?
With a signet-ring someone creates a seal
The Boros Guildmage has two Boros-seals
Boros Guildmage (r/w)(r/w)
Creature - Human Wizard
((r/w) can be paid with either R or W.)
:symr:: Target creature gains haste until end of turn.
:symw:: Target creature gains first strike until end of turn.

I also think you must have a signet in play before you may play the relevant guildcards
Yeah, my bad. I was thinking same-turn accel rather than next-turn. I better have some coffee, they don't do things that efficiently (read:broken) anymore.
Not that much, I guess. Say a spell costs :2mana:(w/r)(w/r). You're playing a W/U/R deck, and your opening hand has a Boros Signet and three islands.
1) Island.
2) Island, Boros Signet.
3) Island, tap lands for :symu:, use a to active the signet, giving you which allows you to cast the guildmana spell.
I don't think guild mana has a huge interaction with artifacts that tap to make more than one colour of mana. The only thing it really means to me is that both things make spells easier to cast, which is good. Run both in a deck and have no mana problems.
I think that's balanced, card disadvantage etc. You don't draw an opening hand with three Chromes + pump the fist. I'm talking Sol Ring here, or worse. Even if this Signet were for "pay - add :symw::symr:" it would only get a

Yes that sounds logical.
I still think the signet will be mandatory to play the relevant guildspell, though
i like this artifact a common mana accelerator? sign me up it seems like this would be a must for any RW guild deck and i can see this (or one of the other 3) in a lot of decks just for the acceleration
also its cool we have 2 of the 4 guild names already.. and its a cool name.. boros is sounds kind of red and kind of white at the same time.. this set really seems to focus on the color combinations..

The third might be 'Gruul', which would be the B/G-guild I guess
With the recent introduction of the type in Utopia Tree and Plant Elemental I think it is propably the former.
Seems R_E is right about this leak being a joker, because this is exactly the kind of confusion one could expect
Plants, Fungi and Saprolings all fit into the arsenal of the B/G-guild

If the four common artifacts are the signets (which seems almost elementary at this point), then these will be exceptionally useful in Limited, as they effectively allow their controller to splash one of two different colors at the same time. Let's say I'm drafting GW, and I want to splash for a really good card that happens to be red, or maybe RW. I can get this artifact. Or, I can just draft it in my colors. This is like off-color myr--straight-up crack for people who like to splash in draft.
these are awesome for mana accell. Just think of this on turn 4 u can easily get up to 6 mana no problem.... not to mention how fast green can accell with these
turn1 land
turn2 land play one of these
turn3 land tap 1 and the artifact to play a 2nd artifact
turn4 land
6mana
green:
turn1 forest, elf
turn 2 land tap forrest and elf to play artifact, tap remaining land to activate the artifact, drop down another of these with the 2 mana.
turn3 land
6mana
i played in a tournament on fridcay. i played affintiy to a sedond place finish. vial lis broken i wonws many games son th3e poever oif it.
Unless i am mistaken Oxidize, V Shaman and E Witness are showing up in just as many decks and warping the metagame as much as Affinity. They should just ban all of Mirrodin block. Onslaught was always the best block ever. I had a U/W Cleric wizard deck that couldnt be beat.

yes, very good mana fixing... since they are artifacts they function as acceleration like the land versions did not...

I liked these better when they were lands, but I can see how they are healthy for the block. Prolly 6 more comin' in the next two sets.
Six cards they put in specifically to include in the next Core Set?
edit - *reads Machius' post* Ah. Plant. Right.
Plants is a bit weird though, i always hated the creature type plant(Utopia Tree).
Machius proudly supports R_E's right to Rumour!
IMO, the signets are strictly better than the Filters, I think...

Yes, but on turn 4, you have 5 mana available, thus accel. Also, you could play it turn 2 to get 4 mana on turn 3.

Such as WWWWR to WWRR, due see what i done for WW i made a R, thus R mana accel.

i figured Gruul was from Guildpact, one of the 3 guilds from that set.. i didnt think it was the BG guild in RAV.. but i dunno..
And plants..... Do they mean creature type, or reprint? BoP is 1 reprint, isn't Smash one as well? If so, 4 to go
