A friend of mine who playtests for WOTC had told me about the new rules they announced today, and I was hanging on to hope that they wouldnt remove mana burn, but they did...however there is one more piece of info he gave me. He said that he had playtested Lightning Bolt for M10 and was pretty sure it made it to the set. His info seems reliable now, so i figured i would post the rumor. believe me if you want to, or dont, but I believe him now.
P.S. the removal of mana burn makes Tolarian Academy and a ton of other cards broken, that plus Planeswalkers and The Grand Creature Type update destroyed my love for the game. I'm out, no more MTG for me.
I'm not sure why you're out. Half these changes seem to be a 'Hey let's undo the 6ED changes'. This is how Combat used to work. Give it a year and we'll get all our weird creature types back at this rate.

That seems cool.
I would love to see it in new borders, seems like red is getting all the goodies in this set.
and about you quitting, just chill-ax will ya. I seriously doubt the end of mana burn and the return of pre-6th edition combat rules will permanently undo the game for you.

a small sentence for you to read while you ignore my post.
Bringing back Bolt is a great idea. Once Shadowmoor and Eventide leave, RDW will have nothing left. Ball Lightning and Lightning Bolt would be perfect for keeping the archetype alive.

Key is remembering tactical use of shades. If you must double-bolt a Rhox War Monk, for instance, the phrase "I guess this time <puts on shades> lightning DID strike twice."
Wow, I think I'm gonna cry. I just traded off a playset. I guess I better start hoping that its a common.
On another note does this mean that they will be trying to power up red? Lightning bolt is the best or at least one of the best burn spells in the history of the game.

I would like 4 shiny bolts please :). Can you ask about rarity? i cant see it at common, it would wreck limited, uncommon seems low but acceptable. Id be mad as hell if it was rare.
With a return to classics from the past and Aaron mentioning they went all the way back to Alpha for cards Lightning bolt is a perfect choice. Could mean that shock and Incinerate are out!!!!
this is the second report about it, so there actually might be a possibility

Because she's the hero standard deserves, but not the one it needs right now... and so we'll chase her... because she can take it... because she's not a hero... she's a silent guardian
seriously it sounds awesome. RDW here I come! (If I haven't quit magic by then)
edit: It's not on the reserve list, so yay.

Even if the author is silenced, the performance is stopped, the story will not end.

id rather see a new 2 mana spell that dealt 4 damage instead. yes, that is strictly better than flame jav. but uh... lightning bolt is strictly better than shock.
We used to have Volcanic Hammer in 7th, 8th, and 9th edition. For its time, people loved Volcanic Hammer for being a 3 damage for 2 spell, even if it was sorcery speed. It was actually seen in tournament play when it was out.
Then we get Incinerate in 10th, which is a HUGE upgrade to become instant speed and have a nifty anti-regen clause.
Now we have possibly Lightning Bolt in M10.
Yeah, I think this is a classic example of power creep.
If this is true, it's totally unexpected. I mean, I guess white technically got its STP back, but eh... who knows. After what Wizards just pulled, it really wouldn't surprise me.
P.S. the removal of mana burn makes Tolarian Academy and a ton of other cards broken, that plus Planeswalkers and The Grand Creature Type update destroyed my love for the game. I'm out, no more MTG for me.
Recent discussions here and elsewhere have made it clear that there seems to be a group of players who consider blue and control synonymous, as if they somehow started playing a game with four identical and "bad" colors that do nothing interesting because they just "turn men sideways" and then true, glorious blue, the only thinking person's color.

I am deeply skeptical of this. Incinerate's return was presaged by a general increase of burn's effectiveness across the board from its Volcanic Hammer-level nadir, but we've seen no evidence at all that burn has suddenly gotten so much better that Lightning Bolt is on par once again. (Certainly nothing in Alara Reborn suggests it.)

Though isn't this an obvious sign of power creep?

It's too good for Core set and too good for the way new sets are designed. Incinerate was pushing the envelope, this is just too good.
One vote for not in the set.
