Default Planechase - Preorder NOW! Seriously

So I work at a comics and games store in the Twin Cities and I was talking to a friend of mine who also works there and is our store's TO and person who orders our magic cards usually. Now Planechase became the topic of discussion. I knew it was a limited release but then I found out how limited:
Each store [atleast retail store] will only get one display case [40 Planechase Packs]. Now that might sound like a lot. HOWEVER if some simple math is done: Our store has 48, give or take, "active" Magic players. Active being players who play in tournaments at least semi-regularly. We have twice, or more, that number that preorder boxes. Considering the multitude of CASUAL players that come to buy their cards at our store, people will be lucky to get one of the packs!

And that's the Reason WOTC doesn't make the profit it should.

Edit 1: Oh and considering I think I remember that Planechase Promo Cards are going to be tournament prizes at some point {?} correct me if I'm wrong {?} if WOTC wants people to play this format they have a very interesting way of showing it.

This doesn't sound correct at all.
Do you mean each store gets one display for the 'prerelease' or whatever of the box set?
There wouldn't be an event around the set if they were limited releases, IMO.

According to an official paper from WotC a case Planechase has 24 Packs. So I call shenanigans

Although he is right with future prices, as it also states:

Quote:
- Wizards Play Network “Featured Format”
- Exclusive plane card to be given out at Zendikar™ Prereleases!
- Organized play events scheduled for 2009 will support attendance with exclusive plane cards.
But that wasn't hard to guess or was already known.

This is a limited release. And yes, each store was limited to buying 40 decks (10 of each different type) directly from Wizards. I'm pretty sure a store that wanted more could have bought more from Alliance or ACD, but at this point Wizards, ACD, and Alliance are all sold out of the product as far as I know. There isn't a prerelease, only a launch party.

EDIT: Someone responded while I was typing this, but my store bought ten displays from Wizards, which was the maximum we could buy. Each display contains one of each deck. I don't know anything about case math because Wizards honestly measures things by individual unit on invoices and always wants orders placed in terms of displays.

I was just in my comic store today picking up this weeks books and I was looking at the new previews that came out last week I saw the Planechase in it and asked about getting them. The owner who I have known my whole life tells me that they will be 19.99 and puts me down for one each. Now I never asked if they were limited or not but he tells me when stuff is normally so I don't think they are I think they are like the duel decks, but I will ask this week when I go in and I will let you all know.

Duel Decks have been limited release as well, as far as I know. Especially Divine vs. Demonic.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...

Limited release =/= limited print runs.

DvD had a limited release, which was to prevent people from stockpiling them and restricting availability like what happened with JvC. They're still available though, and for me at the MSRP no less (at the same store that sells JvC and EvG for nearly double the list price)

From The Vault sets have a limited print run, which means after the initial run, there is no more and the price will only go up.

Someone came onto the boards and said this same thing about Divine vs. Demonic. You can buy those at Wal-Mart right now, so probably just disregard the OP.

The Duel Decks are limited in exactly the same way this is. My store preordered DvD and hasn't been able to get a copy since. If Wal-Mart still has them it's because DvD was a bad product and hasn't sold, not because it wasn't limited. We struggled even to fill our preorders on DvD, because every distributor was sold out of them weeks before their release. They did one print run and they haven't reprinted it since.

The only difference between From the Vault and Duel Decks is that FtV sets are much MORE limited. They're restricting stores to buying between 8 and 16 total individual FtV units (based on their tournament organizer level), whereas they're restricting stores to buying 40 individual Planechase units and around the same amount for Duel Decks. Garruk Vs. Liliana preorders just opened and I forget what our cap was, but once the first print of those sells out, they're gone forever too. They'll still be available on the secondary market or in stores where the product just never sold out for one reason or another, but there will be no second printing.

I'm not sure how limiting the release of DvD would stop people from stockpiling them and gouging the price. It seems like it would do just the opposite, and based on eBay prices, where you can get JvC for $10 sealed and DvD for $25 sealed, I'd guess limiting the print as much as they did with DvD inflated its secondary value.

The bottom line is Planechase is a limited product. It's not as limited as From the Vault sets, but it is about as limited as Duel Decks (which are also limited).

thank you petalred, I wasn't trying to lead you guys I astray I was just posting what I was told

And $58 man? If it's just for one and not all four you're getting jipped. Chad said he thought a lot of stores would do that like they did for ftv: dragons.
Sodofkin is correct, 19.99 is the MSRP and if you can pay that.

I guess I'd better talk to my local game store owner, and see if he's getting any in. It wasn't a problem to get any of the Duel Decks, so I don't see it being a problem.

So whats in planechase that would actually make me want to buy it rare or not?

I don't represent the casual group that planechase is probably targeting but I'm at least willing to give it a shot.
