Welcome to round one of the first ever Vs. Tournament!
Over the coming weeks we here at the Vs. Institute will be pitting two well-known superheroes against each other and letting you determine the outcome.
We've alphabetized the 16 heroes and then randomly paired them.
First up is: Batman Vs. Wonder Woman

Several young boys have gone missing in Gotham City. The great detective sets off on a trail that leads him across the globe and into mystical territories. He consults various allies more versed in arcane problems. Zatanna tells him that he needs to let it go, that some mysteries should be left unsolved. These boys are too familiar to him though. He knows what it's like to have your childhood taken away from you by powers beyond your control. Batman eventually gets Zatanna to tell him that he should seek out one of his dearest friends, Wonder Woman.
When Batman confronts her about the missing children, she eventually tells him that they were taken by the goddess Aphrodite and given to her husband Hephaestus, the forge of most of Wonder Woman's tools, in a deal to prevent him from acting against Ares, god of war and the man Aphrodite has been cheating on her husband with.
Batman scoffs at the politics and infighting of the gods and turns his back on Wonder Woman, planning to get the children back. Wonder Woman explains that, although not the ideal situation, keeping the children with Hephaestus is the only way to prevent a fight with Ares, which could plunge the world into an endless war of epic proportions. She says that she has pledged to protect the children, and that they will have eternal life in Hephaestus’s forge.
Batman has already melted into the shadows.
Wonder Woman whispers "You selfish bastard," to herself and readies her lasso.
I think this sums it up. I think Batman is def at the top of DC's "trinity." She's pretty close (I sort of wish she was up against Superman first--oops, I gave another participant away :p) to him, but in the end, Bruce would be the one walking away.

Listen to my M:tG flavor Podcast: Story Circle! (Newest episode is all about Innistrad previews.)
Batman is going to be tough to beat in this tournament. Particularly if you are going to have him fight people he has already met, like members of the Justice League. He already has contingencies in place to deal with each member of the League, and they have worked when they were used.
Granted, running into each other and fighting is not a great situation for Bruce to be in against superpowered meta humans, but there is nothing stopping him from retreating, and I don't remember Wonder Woman having any form of sensory powers that would help her find him. Once he has escaped, and he has escape contingencies, he can spring his traps, and he wins.
Now, in this situation, there really doesn't seem to be much he can do to rescue the children once he beats Wonder Woman, but that isn't the question being asked.
Batman has bested many super-powered villains before.
The Lasso of Truth is a weapon derived from its power to make the captive tell the truth. Wonder Woman used her lasso not to "knock-out" her enemies...but to conquer their lies and deceit.
Batman would not have this weakness...the best the Lasso would do to Batman is trap him for a moment.
Wonder Womans bracelets block bullets, wonderful....cause you know, Batman uses guns right.
In a fist fight, Batmans judo, and ninjitsu skills would own Wonder Womans face.
But Batman would likely prepare so much, that he wouldn't need to throw a punch.
I've seen only 3 moves from WW. Punch, Kick, Lasso.
Batman has the skills that pay the bills. Manipulation, Money, Toys, Fighting Prowess, Political Pressure, Intelligence, and much more.
Then again....WW is hoooooooot!!

Thanks to Xenphire @ Inkfox for the amazing new sig
“Thus strangely are our souls constructed, and by slight ligaments
are we bound to prosperity and ruin.”
― Mary Shelley, Frankenstein
Didn't Batman and Wonder Woman already fight when Supergirl first showed up in World's Finest and Wonder Woman pwned Batman? She is superstrong, superfast, and supertough... oh and she can fly. It's not like Wonder Woman has a kryptonite type weakness to worry about. As much as people like to repeat how Batman can take on anybody with enough planning, that simply isn't true (just look how he got killed by Darkseid). Where was that superduper planning there?
I suppose if batman is able to get away, then he might be able to buy some gizmo that allows him to defeat her, but if Wonder Woman catches him she wins. As much as being superstealthy is apparently one of Batman's nonpower powers, since he went to her place I seriously doubt he could completely ninja his way out of there without having to rely on his batjet or something. As soon as he starts that puppy up, she knows where he is. She then kicks his butt.
To everybody voting batman, how does he actually win? His contigency plan in the Tower of Babel storyline for Wonder Woman was to have some microscopic robot take control of her brain. Personally, I am hesitant to accept him having this sort of godlike power. If he really had this sort of power at all times, how could anybody in his rouges galery even challenge him? He's simular to wolverine in the aspect that the comics have made him more and more powerfull over the years to the point where he no longer is the same character he used to be. For the purposes of this debate, I urge people to look at what he is supposed to be, an example of what a normal person can do with enough training and resources not a superhuman nonsuperhuman who can do whatever he wants because he "has enough time to prepare".
Well to win this fight, in Batman's eyes, all he has to do is take away the need for the children to be abducted- get the gods to duke it out one on one without interfering with the earth people. To win this fight, he dosen't need to touch Wonder Woman.

"Wizards could put $100 bills in packs and people would complain about how they were folded."
Not to mention the obvious: Batman is the guy on the ground fighting against the forces that loom larger and higher up than anything most ordinary people know, and is continuously confronted by a foil, a person who wants to do good but in a strict utilitarian sense that is willing to sacrifice anyone for the greater good and compromise the safety of the ordinary person, whereas Batman is an uncompromising renegade who will fight at nothing to protect the innocent and will refuse to sacrifice anyone or give into injustice.
Bottom line: Wonder Woman's screwed because she's the villain in this story, whereas the Audience and the Storyteller are both on Batman's side.
Batman is just a man with more money than he knows what to do with. Wonder Woman actually has super powers. As successful and popular as the Batman franchise has become over the last several decades, when it comes down to it, Batman wouldn't stand a chance against anyone with real supernatural powers.
Notice how all of his villains are simply "crime bosses" with henchmen. Nothing supernatural about them at all. Why? Because they would pwn Batman if that were the case.
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
Irish Pirate: So all he has to do is kidnap some kids from a god while avoiding a clearly more powerfull opponent who knows where he is going? Well in that case, it should be a cakewalk. /sarcasm
Since he doesn't care about the gods, I doubt he will bother to resolve their conflicts (even if they could be) and the gods' conflicts inherantly will effect earth because they are so connected to it.
Highroller: Way to break "the 4th wall". Is every debate going to come down to, "Who is more popular and therefore who will the writers let win?" This isn't about who would win if there was a special edition of Batman Vs. Wonder Woman comic. This is who would win, Batman or Wonder Woman, in a conflict and why. The debate is, who do we think would win the conflict and why.
It isn't as if Wonder Woman is a moron. She like many of the Amazons is pretty bright upstairs and she has faced some clever opponents over the years. It isn't as if Wonder Woman is a novince who doesn't know how to use her superior strength, speed, etc. She is trained in the Amazon fighting arts and won the turnament to become Wonder Woman in the first place. It isn't even like Batman can evade her forever. She does know where she is going after all.
Hell, if Batman can win by freeing the kids without having to actually confront Wonder Woman (which sort of is the point of this right?) then how about Wonder Woman win by informing Hephaestus and Aphrodite of Batman coming? Are you guys really suggesting that Batman can defeat greek gods?
I assume this is the CRAZY PREPARED version of Batman we're dealing with, even though he's
currently dead, but you know Bats has multiple contingencies for even THAT problem
But we have to ask, is this a fight to the death? We know Batman won't kill, but Diana WILL if pressed. That's the critical difference. If it comes down to a win or die situation, Bats will throw the fight in order to get behind the scenes and rig it so EVERYONE lives. Otherwise, Batman wins.
Well, Batman isn't a superhero because he doesn't have super powers, he just has tools, making him a man with tools. Wonder Woman has super powers and is a legitimate super hero, and super powers are superior to mortal man with tools, in my eyes at least so I give this one to person who has powers rather than the guy with tools.
flight, super-strength, super-speed, highly developed fighting skills, enhanced hearing, enhanced vision, animal empathy, regeneration (healing factor), sisterhood with fire, high resistance to magic. Blessed with the gifts of the Olympian Gods, Wonder Woman is one of the strongest beings on the planet; she can fly at sublight speed; while not invulnerable, she is highly resistant to bodily harm; she can psychically communicate with animals; she is an expert at all forms of classical armed and unarmed combat; a master of the sword, ax, and bow and arrow; a skilled tactician and diplomat; her arsenal includes a magic lasso that forces anyone within its confines to tell the absolute truth; her bracelets can deflect bullets.
basicly she is a greek goddess more or less...
The only way I can see batman winning this is by takeing a rather dark almost cheeting path of out teching her. examples might inlcude Nano tech Bio weapons or atomic weapons. Bats likely has brains on her too however... it says nothing about her having above average int....
The only way I can see batman winning this is by takeing a rather dark almost cheeting path of out teching her.
Basically this.
Which is to say that Batman has been portrayed over the years as being someone who has mastered 'thinking outside the box' to a degree that even Sun Tzu would find impressive. He'd strike her where she's weakest (and with files on the JLA, he knows) in the most brutal fashion possible, and it might not even be a physical attack.
In being a mortal man who has stood up to gods (literal and figurative alike), Batman is among the ultimate underdogs. True, an underdog is usually someone we (as common people) can relate to or even sympathize with, but in the case of this character, it's more a matter of him facing opponents and situations that give people with 'actual powers' pause. He's fought things, people and events that were smarter, faster, stronger, more resilient and even outright unbearable, and still comes out on top. That's his 'ability'; he never quits, always has a plan, and isn't afraid to fight dirty because he's not super powered.
Superman, as an example, has to show restraint constantly, unless he's facing a nigh-cosmic level opponent. Batman (even with all his tech and training) often starts out at a massive disadvantage, and as such, has no such compunctions to show restraint. A single successful punch from Wonder Woman (with intent to harm) could put him out of the fight or kill him, and as such, of course he'll use ever dirty trick (of combat and cunning alike) to win.
Wonder Woman, like many super heroes has an Akroma-ish "laundry list" of abilities. Batman is just a guy with an iron will, vast cunning, decades of training and more money than most minor deities.
I cite The Dark Knight Returns as evidence that even facing off against the most powerful beings on the planet, their restraint is what keeps them in check, and his willingness to cheat is what makes him a truly dangerous ally to have.
Of course, over the years, mistakes were made, but he's also portrayed as a man that doesn't repeat them. He learns, adapts, and makes himself stronger by his failures.
I agree that Batman's superior tactics and overall preparations will get him ahead. In fact his lack of super-powers is an indirect advantage since most super-heroes jump into the unknown, relying on whatever power they have to get them through. Batman investigates, scouts and studies every villain (and superheroes) he faces. He is full of contengencies so even when it looks like Batman is caught unawares and the villain moves in for the kill, that's when Bats springs his traps.
So I'm guessing that before confronting Diana, Bruce went on a 3 day search for the ancient Amulet of Zeus* wich is known to sap the strenght of even Gods and will use it to reduce Diana to a helpless little girl. Because it's what Batman does, he will find your weakpoint before fighting you.
*I completely made that up.

It is always easy to be tolerant and understanding...Until someone presents an opinion completely opposite to your own.
Why am I getting the impression that according to Batman's fans, he can take on anybody including insanely overpowered opponents like the Z fighters of Dragon Ball Z? After all, he just needs to study Goku for a couple days and despite the fact that Goku is so insanely powerfull it isn't funny Batman will be able to out fight him because of some brilliant plan of his or him having some Anti-supersayen dodad in his belt.
Will anybody on the batman side honestly quote my previous post and explain in a rational manor why I'm wrong? Are non-sequentors and batman's popularity all you guys have?
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
This is really more of a popularity contest. If people actually weighed the two combatants, there's no logical way Batman could win.
Did no one read The Dark Knight Returns or Strikes Again? Batman bested Superman, who is easily on par with Wonder Woman in powers, and he did it without even breaking a sweat. No one has done Batman better than Frank Miller and TDKR has one of Batman's greatest fights. If Superman doesn't stand a chance, then how in the hell could Wonder Woman?
Truth be told, there's not a lot of being's that Batman should be afraid of.
Sacramento , you keep posting the same strawman argument every post....this is not a bare knuckle boxing match between the two, stop making it one. Its Batman vs. Wonder WOman, you have to include ALL their "abilities" and "tactics"
There are countless comics, I won't even bother linking them cause it would take me too long...
Yes, Darkseid killed Batman, that was Darkseid, not Wonder Woman...Darkseid would also pwn WW's face like a sack of spagetti sauce.
Batman HAS beaten many superpowered villains, and even superheroes.
OF COURSE if the they were naked in a boxing ring WW would win...but THAT scenario Sacramento Tzar is the strawman argument. No one is talking about stripping them naked and and having them fight a fair boxing match.
It is Character vs. Character, Batman in all his glory vs. WW in all her glory.
Batman wins.
He would prepare, have a contingency plan, have a secret weapon, and use it.
WW would be fast and strong and just at the very moment of victory she would hesitate...just long enough for Bats to use his planning and secret weapons to cheat his way into the win collumn.
Stop trying to reduce them to naked fair fighters, that is a strawman, and also it is a fallacy.
If we take what we KNOW about these two heroes...then you have to pick Batman. Batman has defeated Superman, Metallo, and many others...he has bested plenty of super-powered villains simply by having that one step ahead of them.
WW has every physical advantage except one....the mind. Batman will outthink her.
Besides....Sacramento....you are not realizing the very nature of the source material.
Why is Lex Luthor (a normal human being) Supermans greatest enemy? Not because Superman cannot squash him like a bug...but because Lex is devious, cunning, and prepared...and Superman won't kill (I hate self-righteousness)
The same is in reverse....WW would not be able to beat Bats because Bats is devious, cunning, and prepared...He doesn't need to kill WW either (not only would he not want to she is JLA, but also because he would be able to trap/subdue her without ending her life)
I am not saying Bats cannot take anybody at any time ever. Every superhero meets their end sortof. Even Supes was killed by Doomsday for a short time.
What I am saying, is that WW in no way has what it takes. Maybe Darkseid did, no doubt, but Darkseid would also WTFPWN WonderW and just about every other character on DC's list save Supes, Spectre, and Black Adam

It would be an extremely close fight but in the end I don't think batman can take Wonder Woman. She is much too fast and strong and batman won't really be able to hurt her either, she is a wall. I'd have to give this particular fight to Wonder Woman.

Not only could she kill Batman by sneezing. But you should always vote for the hot chick!
Because I would rather this poll be interesting.
Besides, superhero on superhero combat is usually not about raw power (or not so raw power, in the case of bats); it's about the moral delema.
I suppose if batman is able to get away, then he might be able to buy some gizmo that allows him to defeat her, but if Wonder Woman catches him she wins. Anyway, Batman for multiple reasons:
1. Batman can easily outsmart and outplan Wonder Woman.
2. He's higher tier in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
3. His movie didn't get cancelled.
