Hi all. I was wondering if I could get some trading specific advice about mtgo, about how to build your collection.
1.) Should I ever buy from the bots? If so, how many non-money commons should I expect for a ticket?
2.) Should I ever even bother with strangers who PM me about trades? They seem to be prowling the newbie room trying to rip them off. As soon as I say "I'm not doing glacial fortress for your x4 ponder" they leave.
3.) Should I buy from places like abugames and stuff?
4.) Is there any efficient way to get old pauper standards like armadillo cloak and mulldrifter?
I don't want to spend a lot of money on this game, so I'd like to maximize my resources. If classified/real people/online stores are the best way to go, I'd be interested in hearing so from competitive people.
Right now I'm playing pauper, but that doesn't mean I'm willing to throw rares out the window for less than they're worth.
I trust you guys waaay more than people on mtgo. Let me know what is the haps.

I'll be sad if people don't start calling The Chain Veil "Fleetwood Mac."
1) Yes, the bots are often the only way to get anything specific in a reasonable timeframe. They're a necessary evil if you want to play Constructed.
2) Not only should you not give those guys the time of day, you should be reporting them to WotC Customer Service. People like that can and often do get suspended for it.
3) While the big dealers like MTGOTraders and ABU are honest and will deliver your order when they say they will (for MTGOTraders, that's usually "immediately"), you'll often find that the prices are the same as they are on the bots. If you're paying with tix, you'll save time by buying from those sites' bots instead of ordering through their website. If you're paying with Paypal, some of these sites give you discounts that make the website worth it.
4) Bots, but some of them aren't cheap. I paid 2 tix each for my Armadillo Cloaks. That's normal, though.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
I think 100 commons for 1 is pretty good. You're not going to find .50 tix stuff like Lightning Bolts or Counterspells, but you can probably find a lot of Pauper staples there. For that kind of stuff, there is a chain of bots that I usually go to. They are pretty well stocked and are cheaper than mtgotraders or any of the other big bots. I'm not sure about the rules on advertising for this board, so PM if you want their name.
For really expensive stuff (Cloak, Fireblast, Crypt Rats) just put up a message in the marketplace. I think Crypt Rats go for like 2 each, so put up message like "Buying 4x Crypt Rats 6 tix (or 7 if you're in a hurry)." This kind of stuff is usually pretty hard to find, so you might not be able to get much of a discount unless you're really patient.
PS. There are also a few bots that give away commons for free. Just type "freebot" in marketplace and you should find them. They don't give away anything great, but you might be able to find something you need. I think that's where I got my playsets of Relic of Progenitus and Manamorphose from.

I should read the user agreement. I've PMed a couple people about trading... usually someone I'd just played with or something, though. And nothing shady, just like "Hey, I need a ponder. Do you need something?"
Won't do that again.

Edit: Thanks for the tip about the freebots. Kederekt Parasite playset!
Well that's like playing someone in Draft and offering to trade them after the tournament is over. I trade stuff like Cemetary Reaper for Merfolk Soverign all the time. Just like trading in paper it helps if both parties know what they are looking for.
Nothing worse than flipping through a binder when a guy wants your cryptic and he's got good cards but nothing you want.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
