I just want to make sure I have this down correctly. I read
If you play a card "without paying its mana cost," you can't pay any alternative costs, such as evoke or the alternative cost provided by the morph ability. If it has X in its mana cost, X must be 0. However, you can pay optional additional costs, such as conspire, and you must still pay mandatory additional costs, such as the one on Goldmeadow Stalwart.
off the Alara Reborn FAQ.
So lets say I play a Bloodbraid Elf and it cascades into a Thornscape Battlemage. I can announce that I'm playing the battlemage for free and then pay a W and R to get both of it's kicker effects? Is that correct?
Kicker is an additional cost to play the spell, similar to the Goldmeadow Stalwart example given in the FAQ. The difference is Kicker is optional. You are allowed to pay the kicker cost/s when you Cascade into a spell with Kicker. -Jack
702.30a Kicker is a static ability that functions while the spell is on the stack. "Kicker [1]" means "You may pay an additional [2] as you cast this spell." The phrase "Kicker 1 and/or 2" means the same thing as "Kicker 1, kicker 2." Paying a spell's kicker cost(s) follows the rules for paying additional costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2e–g.
You can only pay Kicker cost when you cast the spell, thus you may pay kicker costs as you play Thornscape.
