Welcome to the fifth round of the first ever Vs. Tournament!
Over the coming weeks we here at the Vs. Institute will be pitting two well-known superheroes against each other and letting you determine the outcome.
Fifth round? That means we've been at it for a month now. Thanks to everyone who's been following (and voting!) for the past month! If you're just joining us, check out the winners so far:
Like last month, I'll leave the final four fights of the first round up through October, so if you're not sure on who to vote for, hold off for a while and see what everone else has to say. And if you are sure who to vote for, put forth your best arguement as to why.
(This was one of the matches I'm most interested in.)
Hours after the Superhuman Registration Act went into effect Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic, and Tony Stark, Ironman, met in a secure location at an under contruction Stark Enterprises factory in New York to discuss some of the "problems" they will face.
Stark looks at Richards through the optic in-lays of his helmet. "The mutants are going to be a big hurdle."
"If we can convince a few key memebers of the community, we should be able to sway the rest of them. Especially with what's been going on over there--"
"No. We can, and actually probably will, convince most of them, and those that won't register will fall in line. I'm worried about one of them."
The two men look at each other refusing to even say the name.
"Then what do you propose, Tony?"
"Preemption. Take him out of the picture before news reaches Manchester."
Reed Richards rubs his eyes and looks down at the factory floor. "We can't just attack him for no reason. He's an Avenger for God's sakes."
The motors of Ironman's suit whur into motion and he points a finger at Mr. Fantastic's face. "I'm not saying kill him. If anyone can figure out how to reason with him, I'll bet it's you. And you're one of the only people I know, that I trust anyway, that can get the upperhand on him in a fight."
"I don't know, Tony."
"You signed up for this, Richards. You know what's on the line if this doesn't work out. Are you with me or not?"
Mr. Fantastic looks into the eyes of Ironman's helmet. "I'm with you. I think I'll be able to enlighten him to the situation without any bloodshed. I've gotten a few ideas."
"Good. Then I'm going to go deal with another one. I found one we didn't know about. A wild card. Could be trouble. I'll deal with him. Good luck."
With that his boot rockets flare up and in seconds he's gone. Mr. Fantastic leans against the metal railing and looks down at the abandoned factory floor again. He sighs and turns his head slightly. "You can come out now."
Wolverine takes a step out of the shadows. "You knew I was there? I'm almost of impressed."
Mr. Fantastic turns around to face the mutant. "I was telling the truth about talking this out. No one needs to get hurt here. Once I explain the situation you'll understand the nec--"
"Save it, bub. I heard all I need to. You two have a problem with mutants, you got a problem with me."
Has anybody else read X-Men vs Fantastic Four? In it Mr. Fantastic does fight Wolverine but Mr. Fantastic gets help and really isn't fighting back as much as he could be because of his emotional distress at the time.
Adamantium should be sharp enough to cut even Mr.Fantastic, so yeah dont see him winning this one... he could have a chance of perhaps making it a draw given the location, but not a win.

That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange eons even death may die.
Mister Fantastic can take out Wolverine easily. He can build up sufficiant tension to "tie up" some of the strongest people in Marvel (Wolvie is a lot of things, but he's not that strong), and from that point on, all he has to do is suffocate Wolvie till he passes out. Regen or no, he still has to breath.
Hell, Reed almost took out the hulk by doing basically the same thing.
But Wolvie will win this because he is more popular.
Edit: It will take a greater comic geek than me, but can Wolvie actually cut read? I heard that in one issue, he tried and couldn't. Most people don't understand just how resiliant Reed truly is.
Sorry Sha but which version of the Hulk did he almost defeat? because if it was the original hulk then thats not saying much, same with Mr.Fixit now if you are talking about Fused Hulk then thats more impressive since that would mean he almost won against Banner's Intellect, Hulk's Power and Fixit's Shrewdness a combination thats no laughing matter.
Like i said Adamantium should be sharp enough to even cut through Reed so its a very very dangerous situation for him (specially Given Reeds aversion to killing and Logan's indifference towards it).

Sepiriel, I can't remember which version of the hulk it was. However, I have seen Reed twist around and incapacitate extremely strong characters before, and wolvie isn't that strong.
But can you even kill logan by suffocation? wouldnt his cells just constantly regenerate or something the moment reed allows some air back in?
Well i suppose Reed would win if he just knocked him out but still Jimmy has so many tricks... he has a hell of a lot of battle trainning and experience so in close quarters he should have an edge of sorts against Reed

That's why I thought this would be such an interesting battle.
You've got two characters who are known for being both physically and mentally (I mean as far as tactics and such, not psychic stuff) resillient. Wolverine is a master of tactics, but Reed is a master of logic. Reed eccels at avoiding being physically hurt and Wolverine eccels at dishing it out (and can take just about any amount of injury). It's a pretty even fight.

So I'm the only one who has read the Xmen vs. Fantastic 4 miniseries/graphicnovel? Really? To be honest, I was going to base any arguement/discussion I had on it. I am leaning Reed at this point though.
Mister Fantastic can stretch every time Wolvie even tries to slash him, even adamantium claws can't cut anything if they can't apply pressure against them.
Mr. Fantastic wins.

A card game about Presidents. Stabbing each other. With knives.

Mr. Fantastic wins.
Thank you! I knew I heard Wolvie couldn't cut Reed, but I didn't know where it was from. I guess he could theoretically cut him, if Reed was totally unaware, but the comic reference proves that Wolvie won't take him out.
And to Dodavehu, I suggest you outline if these battles are to the death (which isn't very comic book like) or to incapicatation (which is very fitting, and I suggest it).
Interesting fight. Me I chose Wolverine seeing he got the experience in fighting. Also he can take a hit and keep on ticking. I know Reed got the skills too, but in a brawl I go with Logan here. Seeing he try to dodge Reed so much he be in knotts to then get a hit in.
I do understand some people's thoughs on Reed he is a genius. Just when comes down to it Logan has his number in the fighting game. If this was say a battle of brains then yes Reed win hands down. Thats my 2 cents on this one.
Mister Fantastic can stretch every time Wolvie even tries to slash him, even adamantium claws can't cut anything if they can't apply pressure against them.
Mr. Fantastic wins.
It's pretty easy to apply pressure against something that's constricting you.

The battle can't come down to a tie. If it last that long, Mr. Fantastic will just fall exhausted as he still needs to eat, sleep, rest, etc. Wolverine has the advantage on a long fight.
Anyway, I vote Mr. Fantastic. He is smart enough to identify a weak spot on Wolvie's strategy.
P.S. How could S.H.I.E.L.D. defeat Lobo? O_o
P.S.2. To the OP: Can we suggest you by PM a fight?
And to Dodavehu, I suggest you outline if these battles are to the death (which isn't very comic book like) or to incapicatation (which is very fitting, and I suggest it).
I do, but hidden in the set-up spoilers ;). And I agree with your suggestion there. Most of these aren't going to be to the death since in general the "heroes" don't kill people (there are exceptions, Wolverine here being one of them).
Here's the specific part I'm talking about in this round's set-up:
Quote from Ironman »
"I'm not saying kill him. If anyone can figure out how to reason with him, I'll bet it's you.
So Mr. Fantastic doesn't have to kill Wolverine, but that doesn't mean Wolverine doesn't have to kill Mr. Fantastic.
@PanchoPete: I had a thread a while ago with suggestions (I only got two though, and one of them was retracted :() so I've already picked all the contestants. I tried to get a good mix of the most popular characters (I think 10 of the 16 are Marvel or DC) without forgetting some of the smaller sources.
I've randomized them though, so I all the matches are paired by chance (thanks anyway MajoraX ;)).
So I'm probably not going to change the planned matches, I'd love to hear feedback via PM (especially things I could be doing better).
Also, if anyone is interested in writing up a set-up, for one of the battles, let me know.

Pretty hard to cut something if your arms are being held in such a way as to immobalize them as Mr. Fantastic was seen doing in X-Men vs. Fantastic 4. Wolverine simply can't touch Mr. Fantastic because Mr. Fantasic will just dodge out of the way but Mr. Fantastic can immobalize Wolverine because he is stronger and more flexable. Mr. Fantastic is a pretty smart fella, I'm sure eventually he will be able to talk Wolverine down off and the fight will be his.
wolverine could rip Mr.fantastic's ass out his ear

Didn't Mr. Fantastic get shot sometime recently, like during Civil War? If you can catch him off-guard, I'm guessing he can be taken down. And Wolverine is just the guy who is good enough to catch him off guard. I actually didn't like the part of the set up story where Mr. Fantastic knew Wolverine was lurking in the shadows. Wolverine is better than that.
If nothing else, I think Reed would put up a good fight, trying to talk to Wolverine the whole time. Wolverine would realize he's not getting anywhere in the fight and start to pretend to listen to reason. As soon as he had gained Reed's trust... snikt to the skull.
Wolverine cut can't Reed, it's that simple. That buys the smartest man in the world a whole lot of time to figure out a way to incapacitate Wolverine. Also, I believe Reed still knows where all the infinity gems are if it ever came down to it.
