Welcome to the sixth round of the first ever Vs. Tournament!
Over the coming weeks we here at the Vs. Institute will be pitting two well-known superheroes against each other and letting you determine the outcome.
If you're just joining us, check out the winners so far:
I'll leave the final four fights of the first round up through October, so if you're not sure on who to vote for, hold off for a while and see what everone else has to say. And if you are sure who to vote for, put forth your best arguement as to why.
I'm short of time this week, but luckily our friend PonchoPonce submitted the set-up for a future round already. So I'll just jump ahead of schedule a bit. (And if anyone is interested in writing one up in the future, let me know by PM or below!)
Special thanks to PonchoPonce!
Clark Kent just came back to his house after another day of hard work and crime fighting. The house is unusually quiet, but nothing has happened lately that makes him think something wrong could be happening. But he is deadly wrong.
As soon as he gets into the kitchen what he watches leaves him in shock. Three Black Lanterns, including Black Hand, are surrounding the bloody, bruised body of Louis Lane. Superman rushes to her and takes her into his arms. He hears the terrible silence of her heart. Still cradling her in his arms, he looks with tearing eyes at his invaders. Black Hand steps forward, smugly, and offers a deal he knows Superman can’t refuse. They, and only they, can bring back Lois to life, but he has to do something for them first. Superman is angry but still something in his heart tells him to listen. He would never deal with these people normally, but this is Lois, if there's a little chance to bring her back, he has no choice but to take it.
Black Hand explains that he will bring Lois back to life, just as she was when they found her and he will give Superman his solemn promise that the Black Lanterns will never harm anyone on earth for as long as Superman lives. Black Hand just needs one thing in return.
Superman knows it’s a trap and tells them he won’t help them kill anyone. Black Hand smiles and tells him they don’t need his help for that. He smiles and leans over the new widower. All he needs is Hal Jordan’s ring. He adds that if he includes his severed ring fingers, he’ll even bring Lois back with no memory of the all the things they did to her (and he assures Superman that they did things that she would very much want to forget).
Black Hand stands back up straight and wipes the splattered blood off of the clock over the oven. He says in about 30 minutes her body will start the decomposition process and she’ll come back looking more the Black Lanterns.
Zaphrasz: All I saw was a little box that has a ? in it. Care to describe what the graphic was supposed to be?
To be honest, I wish this set up didn't use the black laterns since to be honest they would never act like that. Instead they would give the dead L. Lane a black ring and use her to try and kill Superman.
The problem with just taking the ring away from Hal is the fact that he can just will it back to him. The ring is probally powerfull enough to go through Superman if needbe. Superman can't win unless he kills Hal and he isn't willing to do that so Green Lantern wins.
It's a picture from Infinite Crisis of Superboy Prime fighting the Green Lantern Corps. As in, all of them. At once. And he didn't lose. It may not be the actual Superman, but he has the same powers, and even if he had a fraction of them, that is enough.
It's a very close fight. Lanterns are made to be nearly all-powerful (you need to be if you want to be the universe's super police).
On the other hand...it's Superman. The one. The original super-hero. He is the Jesus of DC.
Both heroes also have a glaring weakness; The yellow impurity and kryptonite.
If we consider both heroes at the peak of their power; I give it to Superman. But only after a long and tough fight.
If you go with both of them at the peak of their power than Hal takes it. Even normal levels of Hal as the green lantern have him at a godly level. Put him at his peak and you go beyond godly and into the insane. Hell Hal as the villain Paradox was insane.
Given the intro and the 'win conditions' and this match goes to Hal.
Zaphrasz: The problem with Superman-Prime as an example is the fact that he is superman+ without most of Superman's weaknesses. Kryptonite doesn't affect him since his Krypton never exploded so he universe doesn't have it (and for some reason Kryptonite from another universe doesn't affect him). Magic doesn't affect him at all. I can't remember any of Superman's other "weaknesses" but I wouldn't be surprised if none of those affected him either. Hell, if anything he is stronger than superman since he apparently can go toe to toe with Superman and a bunch of other superheros and against members of both the Green Lanterns and Sinestro Corps (as seen in the conclusion of the Sinestro Corps War storyline arch). That was after he defeated someone who had all of the powers of Superman and the Green Lantern Ion Power as well. Nothing short of one of the Guardians sacrificing his own life was able to stop him and even that didn't kill the loon. Instead it sent him somewhere else in the multiverse.
Superman-prime isn't the same as superman so he doesn't count any more than the Red Sun version of Superman or Green Lantern count. Sure in the Red Sun elseworlds story, Superman as able to win pretty easily but that was really nothing more than a throwaway fight and that Hal wasn't anywhere as experienced as the normal one is.
Both heroes also have a glaring weakness; The yellow impurity and kryptonite.
Actually only rookie Green Lanterns are unable to affect yellow objects. That limitation/weakness has been removed from the regular Green Lanterns like Hal. It was removed years ago when it was revealed that it was caused by Parallax (a creature that personified the fear part of the Emotional Spectrum). When Parallax was removed from the central battery it stopped having that effect. Instead Green Lanterns' only limitation is how much willpower they have and Hal Jordan has willpower to spare.
Hal Jordan can simply trap Superman in a bubble and tow him around. All he has to do is transport Superman away from Earth's yellow sun and he'll be powerless.

I'm going on record right now and stating that before the end of 2012 we will see foil dual lands in booster packs (The real, Alpha dual lands). You can quote me on that.

I wish could think how Super Man win here. He could wear his lead suit, but Lantern use his powers to make an opening to hit the krytonite and end it.

Is Superman's heat-vision able to severe the finger quickly enough? You know, like a long distance attack.
