So. I really, really, really want to make an EDH Niv-Mizzet, The Firemind deck.
I want to focus on burn and draw, with a subtheme of counters. Also, I want to be fairly budget...like...Under $30.
What are some cards I should use?
I know these are no brainers: Electrolyze, Sensei's Divining Top, Invoke the Firemind, and Ponder. What are some others I should use? All suggestions=HELPFUL!
well ophidian eye and curiosity are insta win combos, but they are terribly unfun.
I might recommend trying a different RU general, since people will hate oin Niv.
Thanks! I plan to put together a draft of the deck either later tonight or sometime over the next few days. Puzzle box and all those cards listed look like fun. Infinite damage combos...Not my thing. A)Unfun B)Not very infinite because you eventually run out of cards to draw.
EDIT:
Rough Decklist
Needs more Counters and burn.
I don't know if it helps, but I removed almost all of my nuke spells in favor of card draw spells or counters. With niv out, card draw is selective nuking and cards like Incendiary Command and Invoke the Firemind pull double duty pretty well for me. Also, with Mindmoil or Teferi's Puzzle Box out and Niv, you are nuking pretty fast. Having unlimited hand size and playing spell after spell with Mindmoil out is pretty sick.
I decided to be a jerk and add a combo piece

So...Anything to take out and SPECIFICALLY replace? I'm going to give it a week before I start to try and put it together, unless I get any changes recommended that would largely affect it's performance.
I just realized something, and for any Niv players, please help answer this. If I'm trying to go infinite, I draw and let's say I can kill 2 players, but I still have one left. I wait until I draw a Time Spiral and play that, giving me more cards. Won't that break the combo? How does this combo work? Assuming it's Curiosity+Niv
Thanks!

When you go off, you should have most of your cards in hand. For big games, run Feldon's cane and reshuffle your GY in after you discard and continue on their turn. If you are going off and will be skipping your discard, be sure to keep mana up for Time Spiral/Timetwister and be sure to take out the guy playing counters first...
Force of Will and Wheel of Fortune are a bit out of my budget.
Also, I don't think Trade Secrets works that way...The opponent would have to choose to kill themselves, which I don't foresee happening.

which version of Wheel of Fortune are you talking about? I was able to get a nice condition (as in slight white marks on it, but still playable) Wheel of Fortune from I believe Revised for under 10 dollars if memory serves me correctly

Wheel shouldn't run you more than 4 or 5, I would think. Treachery is great if it's in your budget, and you're running Cancel, get Dream Fracture in there! Rolling Thunder is another quite nice x spell to recur. Arcane Denial is another nice cheap counter/draw, both on a budget and in terms of mana cost/Niv synergy.

If you want to use Niv, run things that draw lots of cards, like Teferi's Puzzle Box, Wheel of fortune, a smattering of counterspells, some Control Magic type effects and Wild Ricochet and friends.

Cheap cards that help the deck and make it more fun.
My Niv deck is a multiplayer deck, but I tried to make it so everyone draws cards and rotates their hand. So I also have cards like Kami of the Crescent Moon, Howling Mine, Font of mythos. I also like utility creatures so creatures like Willbender, Cursecatcher, trinket mage, aeon chronicler, and flametongue kavu.
I don't know if it helps, but I removed almost all of my nuke spells in favor of card draw spells or counters. With niv out, card draw is selective nuking and cards like Incendiary Command and Invoke the Firemind pull double duty pretty well for me. Here are some other cards I thought would work for your deck:
I think the Hatchling and the Mimic are pretty weak. I know they are UR creatures, but they are probably not good enough for most EDH evironments.

Looks like a good deck for Isochron Scepter. I'd also like to see Flametongue Kavu in here.

Well, he does have Reliquary Tower, which is more than enough spellbook for one deck considering that land are a bit harder to remove than artifacts.
