I don't know if nom is town or scum. But I'd like to point out this type of behavior is his standard modus operandi.
Court Mafia: Day 1, hatch plan to KILL EVERYONE ELSE IN A SINGLE NIGHT, when the plan only allows him to hit 11 random players, ATTEMPTS TO FIRE ANYHOW (Roleblocked).
In other words....Nom is an impulsive player who doesn't think about planning long-term or listening to others. I wouldn't be surprised if he was town. At all.
All throughout the land, the people suffered. No matter what he tried, Richard Rahl had failed to turn the people of the land against Jagang and the New World Order. He knew that time was growing short, and was desperate. And he knew that desperate times called for desperate measures. He made his decision. He knew that others would not approve. But it was his actions, his mistakes, that brought them to this point. Ultimately, it was his responsibility to fix it.
In the D'Haran command tent, Richard gathered all of his most trusted allies. He laid out his plan. As he explained, he could see the mixed reactions. Dread. Panic. Dismay. Shock.
Almost in unison, the room erupted with voices.
"This plan is madness!"
"What you suggest is suicide!"
"The risk is too great, even for you."
Richard expected all of these reactions. He was not surprised. But he was also not discouraged.
"I know all that you are saying. I have considered these things. But ultimately, we are losing the war. And that, I cannot abide. If a great risk must be taken, so shall it be. I will not be dissuaded." He paused, took a moment to look into the eyes of his followers and friends.
"But I will not force anyone to go along. I ask that you trust me in this. I have looked at the possible futures. All are bleak. This is our only option. But if you cannot believe me, then you may leave. I will not force you to assist. I will not try to change your mind. I will not look down on you. Even if everyone leaves, I will still go through with this plan. I have brought this evil upon the world, and I will undo it. But any means necessary."
A great deliberation occurred. Some left. But the majority stayed.
Richard turned to those that remained. "Thank you for putting your trust in me. I know that it must not have been an easy decision. Nor was it for me. Please take some time to visit with friends and loved ones while I make the final preparations."
With that, he left to the Wizard's Keep. Two hours passed before he returned to the camp. All that would assist followed him.
In the field behind the tent, a great Wizard's Circle had been drawn. Most who looked at it would see only madness and Chaos. But Richard's gift was special. He saw the true purpose of the Circle.
Some made one last effort to change Richard's mind. They knew that they would likely not succeed, but felt obligated to try. The magic of Orden is too volatile, they stated. If you are not exact, you could bring about the end of the world. Richard knew these things. In the end, it didn't matter.
He took his place in the middle of the circle, and started the incantation.
"Boxes of Orden, I command you to do my bidding. I alone possess you, I alone possess the power to subdue you! See into my mind. See the faces that I see. Take them to the Void. Take us. Now!"
The sky crackled with sudden lightning. The outline of the Wizard's Circle flashed with light. Blue. Red. Blinding White. But the portal did not appear. Richard's mind raced. He knew that he had done everything according to the Book of Counted Shadows. What was he missing? He grew desperate. This must work. It must. As he so often did when he needed to calm himself, he pulled out his Sword. He stared at the golden etching of the word Truth. And then he knew.
With a roar, he thrust the Sword of Truth into the vortex of power caused by the Magic of Orden. There was a defeaning crack, and the world turned white.
In the underworld, there was one that followed these events. He guessed what Richard would do, and knew that this would be his chance for revenge. The ultimate revenge. He tied himself to the spell.
Elsewhere, in a far off cave, others also became aware of what was about to happen. Could their destiny finally be accomplished? They secreted away, and followed Richard.
And then..there was nothing. No field. No tent. No noise. Only silence. Only oblivion.
Richard looked around at the unconcious forms surrounding him. He counted them. And then again. There were too many. This caused him concern. But there was nothing for it now. He knew that this part would be the hardest for the others. They would have to work together. To trust each other. Not only with their lives, but with the fate of the world. Richard cast the final spell.
Slowly, people regained conciousness. As they looked around, they saw only faceless beings. They tried to speak, but could not. And then, in their minds, they heard his voice.
"Friends. I have brought us here, to decide the course of the world. But we are not alone. I have also brought our enemies. Their fates must be decided. Either we shall triumph, or they shall."
In this zone of Nowhere, a board appeared.
"As a group, we shall ferret out the Wicked. They will be banished to this realm. Forever. But they will interfere. They will attempt to turn as against each other. If they succeed, all is lost. Should you find someone that you wish to cast out, simply touch this sign and think their name. Should a majority of our group come to the same conclusion, that person will be exiled. Eternally."
"Let the final battle not be one of magic, or swords. Let it be a battle of the minds and wits. Let it begin."
With 22 alive, it is 13 to lynch. You may commence.

Let me just chime in on this: Gender is pretty even from what I remember, with both good guys and bad guys being pretty equally divided between male and female characters. So, I think a gender claim is a good idea. I actually can't think of any downside at all.

Yeesh.
I can think of a few ways in which it could expose power roles, or other information. Conceivably, some characters wouldn't even be gendered, and revealing them could be a clue to their power level or abilities.
Especially if finding RR and/or the SoT is a relevant objective for certain parties...
I normally like mass-claim plans, but this one strikes me as pretty Puzzle-esque.

it also feels a lot like gaming the mod. I'm not sure how acceptable that is in this one, but it's certainly something to consider.
After rereading Cyans opening scene, I am getting only two other parties came other than the town. So, if this is anything to go with we have the mafia, and a neutral, which could be either an sk, or some sort of weird WC for getting the sword of truth(not weird I just don't know how the role would be set up. I am thinking about Samuel for this role.)
@ Az you are assuming RR starts with the SoT? And I can't think of any characters w/o genders.... But if you can let's just not talk about it yet.

Those...are good points. While I doubt power roles would be given away in that manner, it's definitely possible. Now that you mention it, it's also possible that a character could have an unknown gender as well (as in, the book never tells you). If that were the only problem, then I'd still say the claim is worth it. However, combined with your other point about roles searching for people/objects, I'm willing to rescind my previous statement and agree with you. Overall, the risks probably outweigh the benefits.
Gender claim? I've poked briefly at wiki and didn't find enough of a character list to know if it's too far weighted to one side to be of value.
I would bet that the females out number the males. Mord Sith, Sisters of Light, Sisters of the Dark, Confessors, etc.
I honestly do not see the benefit, since we have no way of knowing which characters are even viable claims. We don't even know if characters from beyond Pillars are used. In the sign up thread the character base was mentioned but not here. And I have to agree with Az that there may be characters who are gender neutral.

im against it cause all I know of the plot is what I ahve gleaned fomr an admittedly rather confused wiki and I really can't even follow that so I couldn't understand anything for myself and I would likely be mislead by people more understanding of this plot line.:sneaky:
It limits scum options when false-claiming; they effectively halve their options later on. It's a small benefit, but it can help.
While flavor may be an integral part of the game, it wont be gamebreaking, like in Zeppelin mafia, where all the band members were the scum. oh and this gender claim is even moreso useless.

Please for the sake of those following along without series knowledge: what are the acronyms RR and SoT? I think I can guess the latter is the sword of truth, but RR only makes me think of RobRoy.
This rings alarm bells in my head. If you know the plot, then knowing everyone's gender can help you work out their alignment.
Unvote. Vote: Pale Mage
There's no reason to ask for a mass claim of sorts, unless you know you can gain an advantage from it.
So if he's scum he'd already know everyone's alignment; what exactly is the point of your first statement? As for the second, there's plenty of reason to ask for a mass soft-claim, of which someone already covered (limiting false claims); this smells like scum trying to avoid giving away any information and conveniently joining the fray against PM.
I can think of a few ways in which it could expose power roles, or other information. Conceivably, some characters wouldn't even be gendered, and revealing them could be a clue to their power level or abilities.
Non-gendered roles are something I hadn't taken into account. If there are roles that aren't gendered that are likely to be in the game, then that would be a huge downside. Is this hypothetical or is that part based in canon?
Especially if finding RR and/or the SoT is a relevant objective for certain parties...
I normally like mass-claim plans, but this one strikes me as pretty Puzzle-esque.
If RR is Richard, I'd be surprised if he's a player. The flavor of the opening scene implies he's the voice of the mod.
It's already been addressed, but the idea is to force the scum into a claim position early before they have more information than they do now. It increases the chance that they will screw up a false-claim down the road. However, a fairly even distribution of male to female characters is necessary for this to be beneficial. If it's too far weighted to one side it becomes harmful.
dunno there seem to be two reasons for amass claim, either to get an advantage and make the scum trip later as has already been said or to get the game moving and see who waffles about and then lynch them, I think the second one to certainly be an effective tactic as I was caught by it in my first ever mafia, still against due to my non knowledge and manipuablity. <P.S can somone tell me if that is a real word and if its not what i should be saying?
Same question I put to Az. We know there are gender neutral characters from the books?
Not positive. I'm thinking of non-humans like Shar, Gratch, the Sliph, but I think all three of those were at least nominally gendered, if not overtly. And there was some random dragon IIRC, though I doubt it'd appear.
Anything else non-human I wouldn't mind exposing, but *shrug*. My primary worry would be bounty hunter roles.

Why would you want to mass claim now? We're in D1. Mass-claiming now could be good as well as it could be suicide.
Claiming gender is suicidal?
If you think about it, characters may have the same powers (or similar anyway) as they had in the series. So if you mass claim now, you could give away enough information for scum to deduce who our PR's are.
This is an echo of an earlier statement made by Az, but you haven't provided any logical support for it. This is also a different tack than you took in your initial opposition post, where you your position was clearly working out alignment.
It's a random vote. Why not?
I like it better when people random vote off of their own random reasoning, and not leave it up to a random number generator. It's a minor thing, but it could mean you don't want to the accountability. Very minor in and of itself. Taken with your second post, it takes on a different light. The gender claim discussion was already on the table, and you evidently put no thought into it before you posted your truly random vote, then jumped on me for a contrived reason.
Same reason as before
Again, contrived and does not fit at all with a townie mindset. If you believed that a gender claim would reveal the alignments of the players you'd be all for it. Determining alignment correctly is what the town wants to do.
Add to that my post "set off alarm bells" in your head, and is apparently a "suicidal" suggestion. You're making up your position and overstating it.
You answered your own doubts.
I didn't. I'm aware of circumstances where it wouldn't be beneficial, but I'm not aware of anyone's gender but my own (well, and Nom's at this point). You seem confident, here. You know more genders than I do?
If, as you say, the distribution isn't even, we could be committing suicide right now.
We wouldn't be committing suicide, but it wouldn't be the right play. Hence why I put it up for discussion with that caveat in my first post.
You're an alarmist and I think you're making stuff up as you go along.
Well, if things we're nominally gendered that would be fine so long as the recipient of those roles was familiar with the books, but we can't count on that.

Anyhow, what will we gain from claiming? We know the gender of everyone. What do we lose? Not much. However, gender is something that can be easily lied about so this is in favor of the scum.
Johm is scum. Your thoughts?
The benefits of the claim have been gone over more than once. How is lying about gender in favor of the scum?

@Mod
Is there a reason it's 13 to lynch?
Jund Fangirl; Few things can describe the bliss of the fangirl's cries fading to silence (broken by occasional munching sounds).
Grixis Emo; 'Why should I go out there? They're all uncaring zombies! *sniff* No one understands me...'

Please for the sake of those following along without series knowledge: what are the acronyms RR and SoT? I think I can guess the latter is the sword of truth, but RR only makes me think of RobRoy.
"...a talisman against all evil, so long as you obey me."

Bad line in post is bad line in post.

Why not discuss it first?
Why leave it up to random.org? Especially considering your next post...
Isn't working out everyone's alignment a good thing? That's your justification for a vote? Please explain.

There is, actually.
Non-gendered roles are something I hadn't taken into account. If there are roles that aren't gendered that are likely to be in the game, then that would be a huge downside. Is this hypothetical or is that part based in canon?
If RR is Richard, I'd be surprised if he's a player. The flavor of the opening scene implies he's the voice of the mod.
I need Puzzle-esque defined.
Gaming the mod in what way?
It's already been addressed, but the idea is to force the scum into a claim position early before they have more information than they do now. It increases the chance that they will screw up a false-claim down the road. However, a fairly even distribution of male to female characters is necessary for this to be beneficial. If it's too far weighted to one side it becomes harmful.
Ah. Well that wouldn't be good, then.
Same question I put to Az. We know there are gender neutral characters from the books?
@desCoures - Seems so, but the discussion is good.
Not seeing this.

But then you clearly seem to understand that in the latter part of your post.
"Suicide" is a bit dramatic, don't you think?
@PM: I don't care for DC's dismissive "Bad idea is bad" from his first post about your gender claim.
V/LA: 3/21-3/24 & 3/27-3/29
Not positive. I'm thinking of non-humans like Shar, Gratch, the Sliph, but I think all three of those were at least nominally gendered, if not overtly. And there was some random dragon IIRC, though I doubt it'd appear.
Anything else non-human I wouldn't mind exposing, but *shrug*. My primary worry would be bounty hunter roles.
To Banish:
Niv(1) - Niv
Infinis(1) - Dancing Mad
Nom_Anor(1) - Deaths Vampire
Pale Mage(2) - Azrael, Johm000
Kpaca(1) - Some One
descoures(1) - Zindabad
Johm000(2) - DYH, Pale Mage

It's hard to come up with flavor for vote counts.

Claiming gender is suicidal?
This is an echo of an earlier statement made by Az, but you haven't provided any logical support for it. This is also a different tack than you took in your initial opposition post, where you your position was clearly working out alignment.
I didn't. I'm aware of circumstances where it wouldn't be beneficial, but I'm not aware of anyone's gender but my own (well, and Nom's at this point). You seem confident, here. You know more genders than I do?
We wouldn't be committing suicide, but it wouldn't be the right play. Hence why I put it up for discussion with that caveat in my first post.
You're an alarmist and I think you're making stuff up as you go along.
Well, if things we're nominally gendered that would be fine so long as the recipient of those roles was familiar with the books, but we can't count on that.
Puzzle-esque?
I have two votes? This is news to me.
Good morning, non-contributor. Pull my finger!

Johm is scum. Your thoughts?
The benefits of the claim have been gone over more than once. How is lying about gender in favor of the scum?
