MTG Salvation members:
Theft has once again reared its ugly head. This time at the Grand Prix event in Paris, France. Magic artist Rob Alexander had a binder of artist proofs stolen at the event site.
Below are excerpts of of messages between Rob and Jabberwocky.
Someone stole my binder of artist proofs at the GP in Paris this weekend. Mainly Rav lands, Kamigawa, and some M10 that stand out in my memory. If you see someone selling a lot of them on Ebay or anything, let me know. They are not signed, so they will be sold unsigned, or with a forged signature.
I'd like your permission to post this on the MTGSalvation website (mtgsalvation.com).
Go ahead and post it to the site - please have the members get a hold of you if they happen to see or hear anything.
I don't hold out much hope of seeing the cards, but it would be nice to think that the person gets stopped.
Anyone having information that may be relevant to this incident, please remit it to Jabberwocky (Market Street Moderator) and it will be forwarded to Mr. Alexander.
Jerk. Rob Alexander is my favorite artist since he did an amazing job on the allied fetches and ABUR dual lands at least the majority of the ABUR dual lands. All his work is fantastic. I wish I knew something but I haven't a clue as to who stole the cards.

What a shame, he is truly one of my favorite artists. As said before, I really wish I could help out, so I'll be sure to frequent E-Bay to do some investigative work.
I'm going on record right now and stating that before the end of 2012 we will see foil dual lands in booster packs (The real, Alpha dual lands). You can quote me on that.
You saw Rob take his attention away from his binder?
Did you steal it?
Really? he was mearly stateing the obvious.
We're all taught to hold on to our binders/bags and never let them out of our site at major events. don't even let a freind hold it, because they will not care to watch every second as you yourself would. to wrap the strap of your binder/bag around your chair leg and put your foot on top of it.
it's pretty rude to make unfounded acquisitions like that, when he was just pointing out the obvious, in an abriviated way of warning people to be more responsible.
yes it's horrible that theft is still an issue, but it is. we ALL have to take precautions to prevent it from happening.
and before you ask, no... i didn't steel them either.

1.) Anyone who thinks cancel is viable should be shot. in the face. with a hammer.
2.) You misunderstand, what I was suggesting was the total exclusion of Spellstutter Sprite, because it just isnt that good anymore.
3.) Understand, Dredge is not really a Magic: The Gathering deck. When a card is playable in it, it doesn't mean it's a tournament playable card. It means it's playable in whatever crazy fantasy world that Dredge operates in.

How about we chastise the idiots who did this instead?
Hey, ****tards - if you steal from artists, they won't attend events! Good job, numbnuts!
You saw Rob take his attention away from his binder?
Did you steal it?
ha ha. lame attempt at humor.
all i was saying, is just because 1000 strangers share a hobby with you, doesn't mean you should trust them. when you go out to eat at a resturaunt, do you take your wallet out and put it on the table and walk away? probly no, b/c if you do, someone's gonna take it.
so do you think the binder was stolen from the guy's hands? if he had his eyes or hands on it, it probably wouldn't have got took. you don't normally leave something worth possibly thousands of dollars unattended.
like the other guy said, i was just stating the obvious.
i don't appreciate your lame false accusations

It's a sad truism that people have to learn the hard way.
I had a folder stolen (coincidentally it's main contents were my almost complete playset of each Rav dual)... Since then, I never let my folder out of sight.
I had the great fortune to bend Rob's ear for a long time at PT Austin (and now have a lovely set of joined and altered art judge flooded strands amongst other things from him). He's a genuinely great guy and really loves the game. It would appear if he had a fault, it's that he's too trusting.
In this day and age, that's a rare enough gift, and I'm just sad he has been punished for that.
It's easy to place the 'blame' at Rob's feet, but all he's 'guilty' of is being nice.
The thief who took his stuff is the criminal here, so let's not lose sight of that.
As Rianalnn points out, all it'll do is make one of Magic's best and most popular artists rethink his attendance in the future

Again, you clearly weren't there, so accusing Rob of being careless is equally lame. Sit down, guy.

which proves my point that if you're on your p's and q's (eyes or hands on) you don't get thieved.
and to trust NO ONE.
no i wasn't there, but if you pay attention to your stuff and don't trust anyone with it, there is no opportunity for it to be stolen. obv

i don't know how proofs work, but the same seller has a bunch of cards he is claiming as artist proofs. al Alexander.
I doubt those are the items in question. No seller with 20,000+ positive feedback would risk their entire operation by blatantly putting a stolen product up there. I expect someone of lesser intelligence to do such things.

1. "Stating the Obvious" doesn't make it less of a rude comment. The person who stole the cards is a thief, plain and simple. Anything that is REMOTELY a defense of stealing ("Oh well he should have watched his stuff better") is unacceptable.
2. You weren't there - GPs are big events, if Rob was there tabling or brought stuff to trade / sell it's perfectly reasonable for him to assume his designated space at the event is safe.
3. The arrogance here is unacceptable. People have things stolen at events *even though they are taking every precaution*. I've had friends lose cards in their trade binders, even though those binders were never out of their sight.
4. Theft shouldn't be the norm. I'm not suggesting people leave cards unattended, but I shouldn't have to worry that someone is going to walk up to my table during a game, nab my Baneslayer off the table, and run out the door. Anything, ANYTHING that takes blame away from the thieves is unforgivable - we should have nothing but HATRED and DISGUST for people who steal. This is a game, and it's a lot less fun to play when criminals are taking advantage of it.
Rob was here in Vancouver for the ZEN prerelease, and was truly a great guy...accomodated all autograph requests, sold me a nice Verduran Enchantress print, painted a wall at a local store (and the one I frequent when in a Magicy mood)...
He was genuine.
It's disappointing to read that he had his work stolen...I've heard this more frequently amongst the Magic community, and I hope we are all vigilant and able to help Rob locate what belongs to him and it is returned.
And petulant comments from randallross (and anyone like him) are not needed, nor appreciated, and I would confidently state are not welcome here.
not to be rude, but why would you let something like that out of your sight in a public place? seems irresponsible to me.
You have to be kidding me here... though the point seems to have been driven home already, I would also like to state that he is there signing cards. He has a line of probably over 100 people at any given time for whom he is signing cards, talking to, telling stories to... the guy is working. He is contributing to the Magic community by making an appearance there and signing cards for 1000s of fans of his artwork and the game in general. With all that, he should really be expected to have an eye on every single thing he has laid out on his tables at all time?
I've seen Mr. Alexander, and other artists, at events, and they usually have two to two and a half tables with their proofs laid out in binders. They are usually selling them, so this is the only really reasonable way of going about this. The artist sits at one end of this string of tables with their works laid out across the tables. This lets the people in line peruse and possible become a buyer of a proof. Between the responsibility and the amount of things they have laid out, the artists can't possibly keep an eye on everything at once. An artist doing something to further their career shouldn't have to worry about their works being stolen.
Is there no respect amongst Magic players?!
This whole string of thefts just infuriates me. I realize there are many more good players out there than evil, but especially to see something stolen from an artist... Words can't describe. My sincerest hopes to Mr. Alexander that he gets his proofs back and that the thief(s) is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. -Jack
There has been more and more stealing recently and it's getting terrible! In the last 3-4 months, 5 binders and a wallet have been stolen at my local store alone.
That sounds like an issue that your store needs to take care of... If someone is continually stealing an not getting caught, that's where you have to take a stand. Imagine, this is someone in your own store, someone you regularly play with, and could be your friend.

It seems that it may be worth a slightly higher entrance fee to hire some security for these events. The artist should be assured some level of safety while interfacing with customers. As an individual I should not have to carry my decks in a briefcase handcuffed to my wrist just to attend a competitive event. I should feel safe enough that if I have my bag within a foot or two of me, it will not be touched. Obviously leaving things lying around is a bad idea, but if I have to treat everything I brought like they are the recipe to Coca Cola, then how am I supposed to concentrate at all on playing the game.
If mythics are going to drive up prices the way they have and we want people to keep playing then the issue of theft is going to need addressing more than just making the judges watch out for it.

1. the seller has 20k refs
2. read the op. the stolen ones are unsigned
my 140+ MOTL refs
The seller bought those from Rob Alexander himself. Those are definitely not stolen, and I know the seller in person.
So, I have Alexander proofs, does it mean mine were stolen goods?
