Transient? Does that mean this is the long awaited hobo set?
Seriously, this is going to be a fun reprint in limited. In constructed, not so much. Doom Blade hits pretty much everything this does and then some. I guess it's good against Jund and Vampires, but otherwise, it's definitely not going to be overpowered.
Actually, scratch that. Considering the manlands in this set and the fact that pretty much everything but Baneslayer is 3 or less, this is going to be freaking fantastic.
Smother will kill the boros deck, because it hits every threat other than Ranger of Eos, I think it would be a very powerful card to bring back, and it will push the vampire deck closer to tier 1.
Wasn't that just one of the suggestions they include with all pre-cons? Like they mentioned vampire nocturnus for one of the precons and that isn't going to be in WWK.

Considering that they are intro packs I would think that they would only suggest type 2 cards since they assume intro packs are targetted to the newer players which 99% of the time jump into type 2. I would really love this card to be reprinted i even like the art from onslaught so i wouldn't even mind if that stayed.

But Smother isn't in T2. I'm sure it is being reprinted, but that doesn't really change anything. I don't think it will be changing the format in the slightest besides maybe a sideboard or two.
Smother is just a narrow Agony Warp in most all situations, sure it is in one color though.
Smother uses "it can't be regenerated", so it won't be reprinted.
What makes you think they don't reprint "it can't be regeneratd" cards? Since there's no longer Bury, adding "it can't be regenerated" is pretty much a requirement.

the problem with the Art from Onslaught is that it is actually storyline specific. The character on smother in the onslaught version is in fact Balthor. So transitioning it to the modern Standard would actually require new art since Balthor is literally long dead (he is a Zombie at the end of the Onslaught block). So truth be told we will be seeing new art on this card unless Wizards is up to some really shady ret con job.
I see this card being used more in extended where Tarmogoyf is a threat than I do in Standard where the biggest threat right now is Baneslayer Angel in all honesty. Keep in mind that truth be told Tarmogoyf is a faster threat than Baneslayer Angel, therefore having a spot removal spell that can kill it specifically, and faster than any other spot removal in existence save for Path to Exile, is simply amazing.

Exactly. Just 'cause they replaced *** with JDay doesn't mean "can't be regenerated" is banned.
I'm going on record right now and stating that before the end of 2012 we will see foil dual lands in booster packs (The real, Alpha dual lands). You can quote me on that.
Precons have suggested cards that weren't in Standard in the past (Snake's Path from Champions of Kamigawa suggested River Boa, which at the time had been out of print for more than five years).
Smother is not coming back. Doom Blade, Path to Exile, and Terminate already make creatures practically DOA on the battlefield in Standard. It would be overkill and idiotic on Wizards' part.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not watching.
definately welcome the re-addition of smother one of the better removal spells printed imo

While I really like Smother, I have a strong feeling that it just doesn't feel right as a reprint now. Maybe that's because the "can't be regenerated" clause, maybe not, but still.
Anyway, I think I'll be happy if it does get reprinted.

I rolled 5 D6's and got 3 fours. They must have changed the odds of getting a 4!

Smother? Yay, more removal!

New set, new art. It's a must (if it's in there).

Because you can make removal that kills regenerators without actually saying it on the card.

Indeed. It likely just means it's going to be used less frequently, as in the past, it was more common than removal without that clause.

Or removal that does say it, like Terminate. They do still reprint stuff that says that. Whether new stuff will or not is yet to be determined.
Doesn't hate on it any more than Doom Blade.
It does, however, hate on Dark Confidant.
