Thumbs down new? magic product: Extreme Value packs

Was just in Target, and saw a Magic product I hadn't seen before:
"Extreme Value Pack", with a printed price point of 4.99.

All of them had a foil Retaliator Griffin in the visible front with the 5 foil mana symbols in the text box, with roughly 30 cards wrapped in clear plastic packaged behind. After checking 5-6 and flopping them about a bit to try to see what was in the wrapped plastic, I could see an 8th ed. Norwood Ranger, a 7th ed. Merfolk of the Pearl Trident, and a Mountain; there was also a sticker/folded page(hard to tell) obscuring some of the card face, which had "Do Not Shuffle" visible. Not sure what rarity distribution is in them, or any cards beyond that.

I did search the forums for "extreme value", and didn't see anything; my impression is that a foil retaliator griffin paired with commons that aren't even type 2 legal will not meet anyone's standards for "extreme value". If this is intended as a "learn to play" product(inferred from the "do not shuffle" sticker), then I thought they'd learned from Portal that it's better to have people learn with cards they can play in tournaments with. Few players are sadder than the kid who shows up to FNM with his favorite deck, only to get a loss round one for illegal cards, then find out all/most of his favorite cards he's familiar with can't be played in most tournaments (and that he will lose the vast majority of games they would be legal in, even if his opponent mulls to 2). Some of those kids drop from FNM and never come back, because of that; this new product seems to set up more new players for that kind of regret.

A professional repack, perhaps? I have seen things like this in the past and they didn't seem to be WotC products.

I have seen these. I don't think it was official WOTC product. Very low budget cast-offs probably packed by a larger second-hand dealer.

I bought one of these with a foil textless Lightning Bolt on the front. The "Deck" was ALL basic land. This was several weeks ago and I still feel horribly ripped off.

DO NOT BUY - (unless the foil card you can see is worth 4.99)

The lands were kinda random too but mostly older with the newest being from timespiral. I still can't believe I fell for this scam.

At the target near me I got the only lightning bolt, all the rest were that shards block 3 color griffin that looked awful.

If someone could tell me who is responsible for the misleading packaging I would like to know where I can log a formal complaint.

Seems weird you would see something like that at Target. I mean, eBay? Yes. A Brick and Mortar? Probably. But Target? Did someone's brother have a bunch of Griffins they wanted to get rid of?

3rd party products.
I bought both and to my dismay I was sad that I lost ten dollars.
Though, the purchase of 2 Retaliator Griffin to be ok...just not at that price.

The contents are of the following for the Merfolk one.
[Blue White Deck]
-Terrible Vanilla Creatures.
-I believe 6-8 Islands and 6-8 Plains

The contents are the following of the Elf one.
[Red Green Deck]
-Lava Axe
-Grizzly Bears
-Enormous Baloth
-Etc.

A complete waste of money.
Honestly not worth 5 dollars.
Do not purchase.

The foil textless lightning bolt is 15 dollars. So unless you spent 20 bucks for it, I think you made out pretty well.

We've been discussing this in the "Magic General" form for a little while.

http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=212154

Some have land packs, some have theme decks, some have decks from Duel Decks.

I'm sure there are plenty of other things included as the "deck."

I got one that had a Darksteel precon inside. Foil griffin with 2X Skullclamp and 2X Seat of The Synod was not that bad!

So, like, does anyone know where this product is coming from?

Is Wizards repacking old crap(and foil lightning bolts) they have lying around? Seems really weird for THEM to do something like this, but if its happening all over....

It's from the people who repack Shiny YGO cards with 3 random booster packs from the 90's.

I think it's target putting product leftovers together. My local target has a few of these value packs that contain seemingly 40 cards. Others have the Eventide "Lifedrain" deck.
