I built this deck to be completely different from my other EDH decks. While I try to build the others to run smoothly and be efficient while still working around a theme or mechanic, this deck was built to be FUN and THEMATIC first, and to be effective second. A while back someone posted asking if a poison deck was possible, and while there are currently few poison cards, I felt a deck built around poisonous stuff (Gorgons, Basilisks, Snakes, Spiders, Scorpions, and Insects) could be fun. So I've stuffed this deck so full of nastiness that it oozes death.
I've always liked the interaction of Lure and Venom abilities, so I squeezed in a bunch of those, even if those two cards in particular didn't make the cut. Also, in an effort to emphasize the FUN, I've tried to avoid any tutors (aside from land tutors), direct reanimation, and cards that work great but don't fit the theme (like Sapling of Colfernor and Worldslayer).
Surprisingly, the deck works pretty well. In my first game, I blew a ton of Angels out of the sky with a Spitting Spider wielding a Gorgon Flail and then cleared another person's board with a venom/lure combo. The deck scares people into ganging up against it, but it also scares them from attacking into it a lot. Even though I didn't win that first game, the deck accomplished its goal, because I had a ton of fun. Here she be:
The Combos: 1)Venom + Lure = mass death
This one's pretty self explanatory and has lots of potential combinations. 1b)Sylvan Basilisk/Engulfing Slagwurm + lure = mass death
This deserves specific mention because the death happens upon blocking, so the basilisk/wurm survives to do it again. It's particularly repeatable with Nemesis Mask or Tempting Licid. Also, gaining life equal to the total toughness of an opponenet's creatures is pretty sweet with the wurm. 2) Deathtouch + Viridian Longbow/Thornbite Staff = targetted removal 3)Visara the Dreadful + Thornbite Staff = machine gun 4)Whispersilk Cloak + Poison = free poison counters 5)Thornbite Staff/Viridian Longbow + Marsh Viper/Infect creature = free poison counters
Keep in mind the Viper actually gives twice as many. 6) lured creature + poison creatures = unblocked poison creatures (unless they have something that can block additional creatures) 7)Crypt Rats/Infected Vermin + Deathtouch = mass death
Add Swarmyard for repeatable fun. 8)Matsu-Tribe Sniper + deathtouch = flying death
Add Thornbite Staff for fully automatic anti-aircraft guns 9)Silklask Spider/Spitting Spider + deathtouch = no fly zone
I may need to add more mana-fixing back in, but I'd like it to be nastily themed, rather than the pretty, happy elves that usually fill this role. Any suggestions?
I had considered it and then rejected it, in part because it is expensive for a one shot use, but mostly because I'm just not running creatures that can maximize its effect - the only green and black creature in here is my general, and she (or is it "they"?) doesn't really need the two abilities. If I the deck was built around Sapling of Colfernor, I would absolutely add it. It can use the abilities and survive because it's indestructible. I've considered adding Noxious Hatchling, which would combo well with it, but with no tutoring, the odds of maximizing Gift of the Deity is pretty slim.
Lord of Extinction seems like it would be thematic - taking advantage of all the destruction you've caused.
He wouldn't be bad, but my only copy is currently feeding off the mass carnage of Savra, Queen of the Golgari. I'll consider him if I get my hands on another copy.
Have you considered using Genesis and/or Gleancrawler for recursion? Or for preventing a creature from being beaten to death, Vigor?
They may be a little questionable, but Broken Fall or Molting Skin could save a lot of creatures from combat related deaths.
Glad it amuses more than just myself. I don't have Genesis and probably won't be getting any. I considered Gleancrawler but didn't have a spare. What I'd actually like for the recursion slot is Oversold Cemetary, but I need to get another copy. It works well, is fairly certain to trigger with over forty creatures in the deck, and it has a bit of the icky flavor I was going for. Vigor is a good card, but it's too full of life and vitality. Broken Fall sounds too nice and pretty (kinda my problem with Moment's Peace, which is currently in the deck), but Molting Skin is perfect! Thanks for the suggestion (I tend to overlook most of Saviors). It'll replace MP as soon as I get a copy.
These are powerful and vaguely related to general: Decree of Pain - In the story line the Gorgon sisters are kind tyranical, until the Queen comes to power. Putrify - its a natural process and very Golgari. Vigor Mortis - Golgari and more nature than say Zombify.
I also play Weiss Schwarz, Chaos, Vanguard and Wixoss.
Weiss Schwarz Sets
Accel World, Angel Beats, Familiar of Zero, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Guilty Crown, Kill La Kill, Robotics;Notes, Sword Art Online.
Chaos Partners
Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Iona, Kirishima, Kongou.
Dangan Ronpa: Asahina, Togami.
Freezing: Vibration: Chiffon, Satelizer.
Vanguard Clans Favoured
Angel Feather, Dark Irregulars, Genesis, Neonecter, Pale Moon, Shadow Paladins, Tachikaze.
Getting ready to make some changes, so I went through to see what I could cut (again, going for theme and fun first, mechanically tuned second. Here's a list of cards I thought might be first on the chopping block: Moment's Peace - too pretty sounding Haunted Crossroads - not a "haunted" deck so much as creepy, crawly, and icky Moonglove Winnower - it may have deathtouch, but it's an elf that specializes in killing "creatures the elves deem too ugly to exist" - not quite in theme with the deck Witch's Mist - not a bad card, lets me deal the coup-de-grâce if two opponents face off, but it really has nothing to do with the theme of my deck, and I have enough deathtouch for similar effect Thornweald Archer - deathtouch and reach, just like my cheapest spider, but it's an elf Penumbra Spider - it's a nice 2-for-1 spider but has nothing other than reach Consumptive Goo - cool flavor, cool flavor text, but so expensive and doesn't really kill much
I ended up chopping Moment's Peace, Haunted Crossroads, Moonglove Winnower, and Witch's Mist. I'll be replacing them with Molting Skin, Oversold Cemetary, Serpent Generator, and Orochi Hatchery.
The first two replacements are functionally similar (Peace and Skin both serve to save my lured attacker so it can go again the next turn, while Crossroads and Cemetary are recursion). The other two are quite different - I decided I wanted more tokens for sac fodder, Dead-Iron Sledge fodder, kamikaze missions, and, let's face it, Serpent Generator may be expensive, but it makes Poison Snakes, which is cool.
In the end, it was their respective flavor texts which saved Thornweald, Penumbra, and Goo (two mention cockatrice, one mentions basilisks, and the other is just wet, creeping death). That and I wanted to keep my Swarmyard targets up to a maximum. More than likely, Goo will be replaced with Deathspore Thallid in the near future, in which case I may or may not add Sprout Swarm. What do you think? Go with it or not?
I've been waiting a long time for the return of poison, and Rosewater has mentioned that it will happen in the near future, so maybe this deck will get a boost then. I hope they print a Spider with poison and venom (and of course, reach). It just seems like anything with enough poison to kill a planeswalker should also kill whatever it blocks. Maybe a legendary spider named Shelob
Anyway, I'm really hoping to get my hands on an Ohran Viper soon for the deck, and I'm always looking for more suggestions that fit the deck thematically and are fun to play.
These are powerful and vaguely related to general: Decree of Pain - In the story line the Gorgon sisters are kind tyranical, until the Queen comes to power. Putrify - its a natural process and very Golgari. Vigor Mortis - Golgari and more nature than say Zombify.
The first list is thematic but not the best cards. Locust Swarm is the closest to what I'd add, and I'd probably take Fog of Gnats before it because it's cheaper and has cooler flavor text. Decree of Pain is a good card. I don't currently have a spare, and I worry that cycling would hurt me far more than my opponents. I've actually never hard cast the card before. Putrefy is a great suggestion. I'll have to pick up another copy.
I had considered Vigor Mortis but decided to avoid all reanimation just because I always do that in my other decks.
So, I'm adding Infected Vermin as a backup to Crypt Rats (give em deathtouch and clear the board, regenerate the rat if possible with Swarmyard or Molting Skin), and I'm adding Xantid Swarm as a way to play against control (attack with it and then play spells I don't want countered during my postcombat main phase). I may also be able to trade for an Ohran Viper in the next couple weeks.
The trouble is, I'm not sure what to cut. I listed Thornweald Archer, Consumptive Goo, and Penumbra Spider as the three most likely to be cut, but now I'm wondering about Suq'Ata Assassin. Sure, it's poison with evasion, but it's a human assassin. Does the flavor of its ability override its creature type? I don't think so - not when I turned down Prized Unicorn because of its name and type. It's a tough call, and it's only going to get tougher as new cards come out that want in.
As it stands, I' going to cut Suq'Ata Assassin and Thornweald Archer. If I get the viper, Consumptive Goo will be gone next. Are there any other cards that should go on the chopping block? Like what about when I get a Putrefy? Maybe Deadwood Treefolk? I like the recursion, but it doesn't really do anything else.
I would love to change more of the mana fixers to fit the flavor - any suggestions?
Added Putrefy and Ohran Viper. Took out Xantid Swarm and Consumptive Goo. Neither one really did much beyond being a chump blocker. The snake and putrefy both fit the deck's theme while functioning better.
Tempting Licid
It's a nasty little parasite, and is an easily repeatable lure effect.
What's not to love?
Agreed. It's been in the deck since the first build and will remain until the day I dismantle the deck. I love that it can turn into a lure enchantment and then fall off so it doesn't die if the attacker does.
So the Sisters have been absolutely dying for Scars of Mirrodin to come out, and I'm about to start looking for Infectious goodness. But now I'm faced with a choice - do I just add the creature types that go with the current deck theme, or do I incorporate even more infect creatures so the deck drips with even more poison?
The older poison creatures often just don't cut it any more. I also wanted to fit Necropede but wasn't sure what else to cut. I'm also wondering what the next set may bring for this deck.
So with the release of an awesome legendary Gorgon that can't go in this deck as a mere soldier, there is going to be a change of command. As soon as I get a copy of Damia, Sage of Stone, I'm promoting her to general and at least adding an Island and Coiling Oracle. I'm afraid I may need to do a bit more of an overhaul, though, so any suggestions would be helpful. What to cut? Any blue cards that would fit the theme and be better than what I've already got? As in the past, let all suggestions for this deck be weighed against the standard of "what would Vorthos do?".

Blight Mamba, Carrion Call, Ichor Rats, Necropede, and Plague Stinger are easy shoe-ins. Tainted Strike and Trigon of Infestation could be justifiable. But what about Hand of the Praetors and Grafted Exoskeleton, Skithiryx, Putrefax, Tangle Angler, etc.? They seem like they'd be fun, but I'd have to chop a lot of things that already fit the deck's theme to make room.
I can see the deck going either way, so give me your opinion - which would be more fun and more flavorful?

What else should I cut - some of the older poison creatures? Some of the deathtouchers? Utility Creatures?
What else should I add that is in-theme? And does anyone have some appropriately themed ideas for mana fixing? The deck needs some more.
