The purpose of this deck is to lock out the opponent by using the combination of the two cards Counterbalance and Sensei's Divining Top, or more commonly referred to as “ CounterTop”.
What makes countertop an effective legacy deck?
Legacy decks are known for powerful efficient cards like Swords to Plowshares, Tarmogoyf, Brainstorm, Lightning Bolt and Phyrexian Dreadnought. As a result, most of the legacy card pool ends at three mana. With the ability to look fix the top card of the deck (via Sensi’s Divining Top, Brainstorm and Ponder) a deck revolving around Counterbalance can thrive.
Countertop has been played slowly integrated into competitive legacy since Steve Sadin won Grand Prix Columbus (2007). The deck has evolved since then because of the evolution of the meta game. These decks are Hulk Flash (flash is now banned), Threshold, Painter, Supreme Blue, Dreadstill and Countertop Progentious. These decks are shown below.
The reason why countertop has so many variants is because of how flexible to cards in the deck are. The main core of a Countertop Deck is the following-
Also this is two variants that Gerry Tompson wrote about in this article. These 2 don't have any success behind them, but they have some good ideas that could be incorporated to fight an ever changing meta.
These doesn't really follow the min 2 Ponder 3 Daze and 4 Tarmogoyfs outline, but it seems to be a fairly solid deck with some strong answers to a lot of decks.
Also would disscussion of mtgo meta be considered budget disscussions being that there isn't cards like Rishadan Port, Sinkhole, and Maze of ith? I don't think that this srchtype is affected too much, i was just wondering.
I think that the red is 100% needed because it gives us a chance against merfolk and goblins, two decks that we have a hard time against because their creatures aren't that big.
In terms of the other lists, thanks for finding those, i will add them to the list
Thopter/Sword decks are so different I think they should have their own thread. Those are basically combo/control decks while UGW or UGB lists are aggro/control. They are very different decks and strategies.
I think that the red is 100% needed because it gives us a chance against merfolk and goblins, two decks that we have a hard time against because their creatures aren't that big.
I don't think red is 100% needed. Sure it's makes the Zoo m/u better, but weakens the manabase, which is already susceptible to wastelands. 4 colors even more so. Getting a Firespout off against Merfolks is hardly a sure thing... (wasteland, cursecatcher, daze, fow, spell pierce, stifle...)
You can play 3 color bant and have a solid aggro m/u if you have paths or EE in the sideboard.
It's about time this board had a CB/TOP primer. I think some explanation of good/bad matchups would be a worthwhile addition. Overall, good primer!

It strikes me as a bad idea that literally the most diverse archtype in the format is getting stuffed into a single thread. I mean, CountertopBant and ProBant with countertop should probably have their own thread away from dreadstill. The strategies are sooo different.

That's something I was wondering. Which decks can be split off into their own threads?
None of the other builds are really relevant in the meta right now, maybe an "other countertop" is in order.

Dreadstill should have its own thread, CounterTop Foundry should have its own thread as well. When I update the Top8 data again I will separate out CounterTop Foundry/Depths from the rest of the CounterTop decks in the same way that Dreadstill is separated out.
CounterTop as in this thread should probably include UGW/UGWR of both Progenitus and non-Progenitus varieties and possibly UGB/UGBW, although the latter two aren't doing as well lately.

I currently play only two formats, what I play in them is:
Legacy: Domain Zoo, RGW Zoo, Merfolk, Solidarity, Mono Black Aggro
EDH: Kagemaro, First to Suffer
What do guys think of using See Beyond to shuffle Progenitus or other unneeded stuff back into the deck?
I would say that ends up being just worse than brainstorm-fetch/ponder/sdt.
Brainstorm is an instant, it costs 1 and it draws three. See beyond is a sorcery that costs 2 and only draws 2. If it somehow became a huge problem that you keept getting progenitus in your hand with no to way to shuffle it away, then a single see beyond might make sense. But I seriously doubt that you'll need it in addition to the 4 brainstorms you already have.
If See Beyond cost U and was an instant, I would be all over that. As it is, Brainstorm and Ponder are better.
I notice all of you guys play Trygon Predator; how has it been for ya'll? Is it strictly for the mirror, or does it help other matchups? You also appear to run 18 lands; do you find that to be sufficient to survive Wasteland? I was considering cutting the 20th for a 3rd Ponder, but wasn't quite sure.
I played the following list to 3-1 in a MODO daily tonight, beating the mirror, Zoo, and Reanimator before losing to a second Reanimator in the last round. Game one I had a decent hand, but he had the nuts. Game two I saw zero hate cards and made a couple of borderline plays that swung the wrong way.
I figure that I don't need Raveneous Trap, Crypt, or Teeg in any of these matches, so maybe I should cut them for stuff like Finks. My sideboard looks like:
Also, how does this deck combat Reanimator? I my one match against it, they went in on Sphinx of the Steel Wind, which I Swords'ed, and then I was able to get there with a Goyf. Do we need a gameplan against Iona, since she's probably going to name white to cut off Swords and most of our guys? I guess we can race with Progenitus and any guys we have out already, but do we need another fall back plan?

1.) Anyone who thinks cancel is viable should be shot. in the face. with a hammer.
2.) You misunderstand, what I was suggesting was the total exclusion of Spellstutter Sprite, because it just isnt that good anymore.
3.) Understand, Dredge is not really a Magic: The Gathering deck. When a card is playable in it, it doesn't mean it's a tournament playable card. It means it's playable in whatever crazy fantasy world that Dredge operates in.
Synopsis: I'm playing in my first Legacy event since GP Chicago, and it's a small event with my friends. I've never played this deck in real life, and only have a few matches on MWS with it. The meta is Legacy Jund, Reanimator, UW Landstill, and random stuff.
So what is do you think my gameplan against Reanimator game 2?
After watching the LSV videos, I'm pretty scared of the Reanimator matchup, since the guy who was going to play zoo will play this instead and it looks like Reanimator wins every game it plays.
The Archangel is seems good against Renanimator, since can survive a fight with any of Reanimator's guys. Since she doesn't have to block to do this, she even stops Sphinx of the Steel Wind. She comes out with Natural Order, which dodges Iona's stoppage on white spells. Most importantly, she blanks Inkwell Leviathan.

ok so...i love the idea of countertop and i have a good idea of the gist of the decks but theres one nagging question about how counterbalance works. I decided to plop my question in here. If you reveal a land off of counterbalance when your opponent played some 0 cmc card like Lions Eye Diamond...does counterbalance counter the spell? Lands afterall have no cmc so i assume its zero. I looked on the gatherer and there was no ruling on it. So how does it work?

If you see someone playing a control deck, the following strategy is considered acceptable: 1) Slowly reach upward 2) Grab your opponent firmly by the throat 3) Squeeze 4) ???? 5) Profit...and a fountain of red Kool Aid!!!
I really want to play this deck, I play dredge right now.. cause dredge just rocks when you remember to use your cabal therapy's. But I want to play a countertop progenitus, but is is possible to play it without rhox war monk and noble hierarch? I would prefere to play a blue green kind with just goyfs and predators and play things like shackles instead of the war monk. You guys seem to know what's up so tell me if that is possible to do and still be really competetive *i don't want to play hierarchs until they rotate cause they cost way too much to purchase.*

Why aren't any lists running scroll rack as a one of with counterbalance? Not sure if anyone has tested it, but it seems like it could be ridiculously powerfull.
I'm very new to legacy and am deciding which deck I want to start building, so I'm trying to figure out how each deck works.
When someone plays a spell while you have counterbalance out, do you have a chance to use Sensei's Divining Top's ability before counterbalance is triggered, or do you have to plan ahead and use Top's ability before they cast their spell?

The strength of CB/Top is that you can respond to the casted spell, stack the top card to hopefully match the cc of the spell, and let CB trigger -- thus countering the spell. You have the "soft lock" of CB/Top in a nutshell.

In other news, has anyone considered snuff out in CB/Top.dec? 4cc to get the higher end of legacy spells + it's "free" removal if necessary. Obviously intended for non-BANT color cb lists. I'm thinking possibly UBr/UBw
