Welcome to the Card Creation League! For May, we will be building a full set based on a return to the setting of Homelands, the closed plane of Ulgrotha.
The Card Creation League is a monthly contest in which players compete over seven rounds. Each month has an overall theme and/or story, determined by that month's host.
Each round, the host will assign a card creation task to the players. This task may vary between teams or players.
The first three rounds are open to everyone who joined in the sign-up thread, which will be posted near the end of the previous month. After these rounds, the Top 8 players will move on to three single elimination rounds to determine a winner.
Rounds usually last three to four days for submissions and about two days for critiques, but the host has final say in making the schedule.
For the first three rounds, players are divided into teams. Four teams is standard, but there may be more or less depending on the number of players. Each team will review another team's cards during the critique period of that round.
Each player must submit a Top 3 ranking for the team he or she critiques at the end of each round. Each 1st place is worth 3 points, 2nd place 2 points, and 3rd place 1 point.
Additionally, each player can receive 2 bonus points per round. One point is awarded for posting a Top 3, and one point for providing critiques for that team's cards.
Suggested areas to critique include creativity, balance, printability, and relation to the overall theme or that player's previous cards.
Players who do not post a card or a Top 3 will be put on "probation." Top 3 violations for a round can be removed by posting or PMing the host with your Top 3 before the end of the next round. Any player that would receive a second violation is disqualified from further competition that month.
At the end of the first three rounds, the Top 8 players will be selected by points (usually the top 2 from each team). In the case of ties, there may be more than 8 players advancing. The host will determine matchups for single elimination. At the end of each elimination round, remaining players not in that matchup will choose a winner to advance. The host will break any ties.
The final round is determined by public poll.
This month, the CCL will be visiting the plane of Ulgrotha to construct a standalone large set. Here are the important parameters for the set:
Long after the events of Homelands, Baron Sengir still holds the most power in the plane. Recently, he came close to perfecting planar travel through the Rift left by ancient planeswalkers, but was foiled in his plan by a ward that had been left deep within by Feroz. This ward sealed the plane once again, but not before it had called back Feroz's ally, Sandruu, and even more incredibly reincarnated Feroz and his love, Serra. Inspired by these powerful allies, the factions of opposition to the Baron began to launch their plans, and conflict broke out. The Rift accident has had unpredictable effects, however, and inhabitants find themselves thrown in and out of the plane.
Main Creature types:
White - Human Clerics, Knights, Soldiers, etc.
Blue - Human and Dwarf Wizards, Faeries, Pirates
Black - Vampires, Humans, Bats, Shades, Spirits
Red - Minotaurs, Dwarves, Humans
Green - Humans, various animals
The main color conflict is between the Baron's forces in black and the village folk of white and green, in Aysen and An-Havva. In red, the Koskun mercenaries and Anaba minotaurs are available to the best offer. The dwarven and human wizards of the Wizard's School on the Floating Isle also cooperate with the Baron from time to time, but only enough to preserve their independence. They are concerned with raids from the thieves of Koskun as well.
The reawakened Ban of Feroz has claimed victims in strange ways, forcing cards to interact with the exile zone. One of the main mechanics will be Plot, as designed by Jimmy Groove. Here is his description of Plot:
Plot is a keyword action, always modified with a number. To plot X, you exile the top X cards of your library face down. You can look at these cards at any time. Cards exiled by a plot ability are considered to be "plotted" and can be referenced by any ability that checks for plotted cards. These abilities typically turn plotted cards face-up, at which point they are no longer plotted.
Abilities that look for plotted cards can find cards plotted by any plot ability you played. Face-down exiled cards that are were not exiled by a plot ability (as with Duplicity) are not plotted.
Unless an ability specifically says otherwise, you can only turn face-up your own plotted cards.
Plot is found primarily in blue, which is the color best suited for long-term planning. Its allies, white and black, also have a fairly large number of plot cards. Green and Red have fewer plot cards, mostly involved in cycles, but are also the colors which are best at opposing plot.
Example of play:
If on the first turn, you play this card:
Secretive Student
Creature - Human Wizard (C)
When Secretive Student enters the battlefield, plot 1 (Exile the top card of your library face down. You may look at it at any time.)
1/1
then on the second turn could play this card, using the plotted card as a resource.
Protective Plan
Instant (C)
Turn a plotted card face up. Prevent X damage to target creature or player, where X is the plotted card's converted mana cost.
There may be another mechanic allowing you to play spells from exile, I haven't decided yet. There will also be a color conflict sub-theme, with a number of color hosers.

Round One Challenge
This month we will be filling out a large set along the outlines of the Card Codes above. Our first task will be to fill out a number of common and uncommon creatures. In the Card Codes list, you will find your name, along with a color and a basic card concept. In case you are not familiar with the card codes, the first letter is rarity, the second is color (CU02 is the second common blue card, for example.) Design a card of the appropriate color, rarity, and concept!
I have also listed the p/t of previous submissions, so you can get an idea of what we already have.
Oh, and let's hold off on Plot still this round, we will approach that more later.
For reference, see Round One and the //gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?page=0&action=advanced&set=%7C[%22Homelands%22">"]Homelands set.

Team Feroz Stiletto-Toothed Monitor1G
Creature - Lizard (c)
Deathtouch
When ~ is dealt combat damage, it gets -3/-0 and loses deathtouch (This effect doesn't at end of the turn).
3/2 "I hope the fact that it will never bite again consoles you as you die."
BTW, Privateer Galleon should be a Human in addition to its other creature types.
I'm both a valiant and clever person; abrasive and quick-witted with my own unique set of standards. What I value in my life is autonomy, power, and righteousness; I do whatever I want so long as I fell that it is justified by my own principles, damn what others think. At my best I am glorious, exciting, and courageous; at my worst I am merciless, destructive, and violent.
Sengir Tax Collector3BB Creature - Vampire (U)
When Sengir Tax Collector enters the battlefield, put three
0/1 black Serf creature tokens onto the battlefield.
Sacrifice three Serfs: Destroy target nonblack creature. "You will repay your debt. Blood is as valuable as gold to
me."
3/3
EVALUATIONSOF TEAM SERRA
Sengir Hounds :3mana::symb:
Creature - Hound (C)
Intimidate
Whenever a creature dealt damage by Sengir Hounds this turn is put into a graveyard, if that creature had a +1/+1 counter on it, put a +1/+1 counter on Sengir Hounds.
3/1
A 3/1 with a minor upside and intimidate for 4 seems fine. Though I'm not sure how it will survive combat
to get its +1/+1 counter though, what with having 1 toughness. Seems like it could be a Vampire Hound as
well.
Reckless Minotaur3RR
Creature - Minotaur Berserker (Uncommon)
~ must attack each turn if able.
Whenever ~ attacks, it deals 1 damage to each creature you control.
"If he's enjoys the rush of combat enough to harm his own allies, hire him." - Baron Sengir
5/3
That drawback is really unnecessary. It would be balanced without it. As is, it is way too underpowered. Look at Mass of Ghouls. Same card almost, no drawback.
Stampeding Elk3G
Creature - Elk
Stampeding Elk can't be blocked by blue or black creatures.
3/3 Deceit fails before forthright. And nothing is more honest about its intentions than a charging elk.
I think this would be more suited at uncommon, as it seems just slightly above the curve of what you can get at common.
Fog Sprite2G
Creature - Faerie {C}
Flying
Sacrifice Fog Sprite: Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to and dealt by target creature this turn.
1/1
Legends say that Fog Sprites were once children abandoned in the forest by their mother, then taken in by the Willow Priestess. Now they protect the forest for their newfound mother.
I like it. Simple and balanced.
Priest of the Lost OrderWW {U}
Creature - Human Cleric
W, T: Up to two target creatures gain lifelink until end of turn.
0/2 "Though Serra was long gone they still taught others of her piety."
Serra's back now, but I'll buy that this is what they did during the interim. Seems fine in terms of balance though.
Order of SerraWW
Creature - Human Knight (U)
First strike WW: Protection from red and from black until end of turn.
2/1
Strong, but perfectly feasible. I think the double white in the ability cost is what balances it. A cost with only one white would have to cost a bit more. Should write out that it "gains" protection.
Trench Dweller4UU
Creature - Serpent (C)
Trench Dweller can't attack unless defending player controls an island.
Whenever Trench Dweller blocks, you may put target creature blocked by it to the bottom of its owner's library.
4/6
Way too strong, especially for a common. It blocks really well anyway, why does it need the ability? That just makes it a massive pain, as it will almost never die in combat. At uncommon MAYBE, but only MAYBE. A six mana 4/6 blue can get, but not with that good of an ability at common.
If I could "like" or "upvote" you right now, I would.
Quote from Boing »
Into the Maw of Hell is a name so awesome, it deserves its own song.
It would be about a world of brown spikes and red fire, where men fight and scream and become blurry masses. Then it would change to somber, we learn that this glorious place exists only in Raymond Swanland's head. To visit it, you must enter the maw of Hell itself.
Sengir Hounds3B
Creature - Hound (C)
Intimidate
Whenever a creature dealt damage by Sengir Hounds this turn is put into a graveyard, if that creature had a +1/+1 counter on it, put a +1/+1 counter on Sengir Hounds.

Reviews: NOW PRESENT
DeusofCalamity:
(U black shade) Feels somewhat below-curve, taking Crypt Ripper as the present curve. (I'd call the "+1/+1 counter for 'eating' a creature" worth about the same as Haste + a rarity bump.)
Krey:
(C green 5/5 or larger) I'm not even sure what that second line is supposed to be. Is it missing "Whenever Phantasmal Fog attacks, ..." at the beginning? If that is... it's decent, if a kind of mid-range common at best. If it's just a blanket "doesn't untap during your first untap step with it on the battlefield", that might be pushing it to the high end of common or the low end of uncommon, depending on your opinion of Silverback Ape. Minus a point for being the third Hungry Mist reference, though.
Twilight Kiwi:
(C green high toughness) Entertainingly backwards version of Hungry Mist. Definitely better than the other homages to Hungry Mist from a power-level standpoint; bonus for the flavor text.
Asrama:
(U white flyer) At that cost, even with the pseudo-cloning, it doesn't feel uncommon. Token copies of it might bump it to rare, though, so I'd say bumping it to either a 1/2 and tokens at 1/2, or a 2/2 and leave the tokens alone.
Umi_no-samui:
(U blue flyer) This lands a little high on the power level. For comparison, look at Mystic Snake - power creep hasn't given us flying + +0/+1 for slightly less than free.
Valonus88:
(U green enemy hoser) Interesting; minor dock of points on my end for the incorrect templating of the upkeep cost and for being slightly overpowered.
MagicProfessor28:
(U green trample) I'm aware that rares in Homelands suck for the most part. Rysorian Badger was not one of the bad rares. You've just obsoleted it at uncommon. Not a good idea.
Priest of the Lost Order :symw::symw: {U}
Creature - Human Cleric
:symw::symtap:: Up to two target creatures gain lifelink until end of turn.
0/2 "Though Serra was long gone they still taught others of her piety."
I opened one last year, got two crap worldwake packs and 8x scathe zombies, which I promptly hid around my sister's apartment for her roommates to find. But, yeah, it was a piece of crap.
You, sir, have just won the internet. Congratulations.
Blood Hunter1B
Creature - Bat C
Flying
Blood Hunter gets +2/+2 if you control a Vampire. "The Baron seems to bring out the worst in everything." -- Feroz
0/1
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
Hungry Haze 1GG
Creature- Elemental UC
At the beginning of your upkeep, pay GG if you cannot, sacrifice ~.
Shroud
Whenever a player plays a black and/or blue spell, you may draw a card and put a +1/+1 counter on ~.
4/2
(I know that a Haze isn't really very green according to todays color pie, but its an homage to Hungry Mist)
(I just noticed... we have at least 3 homages to Hungry Mist... glad I wasn't the only one who liked that card...)

Blood Hunter gets +2/+2 if you control a Vampire. "The Baron seems to bring out the worst in everything." -- Feroz

I like it... I like it a lot. It seems a bit underpowered (it could even cost B), but at common I guess its just fine. Decent flavor text too. 8/10
netn9:
Anaba Fire Runner :1mana::symr:
Creature - Minotaur (Common)
Anaba Fire Runner can’t be blocked by white and/or blue creatures. "Only stupid and crazy folks will try to stop a rushing fire with horns that chasing after them"
- Haniel, Aysen Commender
2/1
This is fine. Plain, simple, elegant, understandable, and a smige interesting. Only reduction is because o a very slight lack of creativity.
8/10
IlGreven:
Charging Wolverine -- :3mana::symg:
Creature -- Beast (C)
Trample
:3mana::symg:: Charging Wolverine gets +3/+3 until end of turn. Activate this ability only once each turn.
2/2
Its... good. Your task didn't exactly give you much leadway, so its okay for what it needed too be. I can't really take off any points for creativity, because you were about as creative as you could be with what you were assigned. My one complaint is that it seems a bit underpowered, even for a common. now-a-days we have 4/5's, 5/5's, and 5/4's all the time for 3-4 mana (yeah, most of those are uncommon, but the reasoning still stands). You probably could have bumped down the activation cost and/or the mana cost and it wouldve been just fine.
8/10
ced395:
Aysen Medic :3mana::symw:
Creature - Human Cleric (C)
Vigilance
:symw:, : Prevent the next 2 damage that would be dealt to target creature or player this turn.
2/2
Unoriginal, kinda bland, I can eaisily see this being printed in a core set or something, and I MIGHT be okay with this in draft, but after that it would just sit in a box doing nothing. Im not sold on it. Could eaisily be a 2/3-2/4 and I would be a little more okay with it, but if I'm paying that much mana, I want to do something more with it.
7/10
Talore:
Psionic Gatemage :1mana::symu::symu:
Creature -Dwarf Wizard[u]
Defender
:1mana::symu:: ~ gets +1/+1 until end of turn.
: Target creature gets -X/-0 until end of turn, where X is ~'s power.
2/5 "You'll nae be gettin' by me that' easily, young bandit!" -Varghar Mindblade, Isle Warden
Well, the pump doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the modern color pie (although this is based on Homelands, so that's a bit excusable), I could see it being "U:~gets +0/+1 until EOT." instead, and have its other ability give -x/-0 based on its toughness. I also don't understand exactly why a Dwarf Wizard can't attack...
6/10
Goryus:
An-Zerrin Golem :symr::symr:
Creature - Construct U
Protection from Clerics and Wizards
Whenever An-Zerrin Golem becomes the target of an instant or sorcery, you may choose new targets for that spell. The constructs of the An-Zerrin people were created as a way of fighting back against the powerful magicks of the other races. Although the time of the An-Zerrins has long since passed, their ingenuity lives on, driven with singular purpose.
2/2
All-in-all pretty awesome. Not sure that it EXACTLY hoses white and blue, as there are other creature types besides clerics and wizards. But you get a A+ for creativity and outside thinking.
7.5/10
Jimmy Groove:
Baron's Hunter :2mana::symb::symb:
Creature - Vampire Assassin (U)
:symb::symb:, : Destroy target green or white creature with toughness less than or equal to Baron's Hunter's power, then put a +1/+1 counter on Baron's Hunter.
"Vampires made of An-Havva huntsmen often maintain a love of the pure that focuses their hunger in a very useful direction" - Baron Sengir
2/2
This is great. Dynamic, interesting, powerful, but not too powerful, its flavorful, and circumstantial. It could easily cost less, but I understand the slight lack of power (this is from homelands, after all ;))
9/10
Psionic Gatemage1UU
Creature -Dwarf Wizard[U]
Defender 1U: ~ gets +1/+1 until end of turn. T: Target creature gets -X/-0 until end of turn, where X is ~'s power.
2/5 "You'll nae be gettin' by me that' easily, young bandit!" -Varghar Mindblade, Isle Warden
Stampeding Elk :3mana::symg:
Creature - Elk
Stampeding Elk can't be blocked by blue or black creatures.
3/3 Deceit fails before forthright. And nothing is more honest about its intentions than a charging elk.
Shade of Sengir3BB
Creature - Vampire Shade {U}

[1/3]
Team Ravi - Black uncommon creature hosing green and white.
Baron's Hunter2BB

2/2
Awesome Lanxal, thanks for that!
To address some questions -
My plan was to shoot for a modern, printable set. If people think it would be more fun to make terrible cards, I'm willing to go along to a point, but I don't see why we should be printing 4 mana 2/2s with a drawback (ohmusama ;)). Color pie can be a little off, but I will be using the modern distribution of effects to assign card concepts in future rounds.
Deus, I probably should have specified, but with card numbers controlled as they are, we're going to need to hold off on implying cycles except when it's in the challenge. Also, for this round, you are supposed to be making a shade, UB03.
Guide of Aysen 3WW
Creature - Human Knight (common) WW: Target white creature gains plainswalk until the end of turn.

Whenever ~ attacks, it deals 1 damage to each creature you control. "If he's enjoys the rush of combat enough to harm his own allies, hire him." - Baron Sengir
5/3
Art (If I manage to find some): A minotaur is in a haze of rage, charging through lines of soldiers, taking his own allies out at times with his axe.
I'm assuming we get to play with plot for this round, correct?
Soraya's Aerial Scout 2W
Creature - Bird
Flying
Whenever an opponent casts a creature spell without flying, put a 1/1 white Bird creature token with flying onto the battlefield. It was trained so that when it spots trouble on the ground, it'll fly to the aviary and get help.

Deadline for critiques - 12am midnight US Eastern time, Thursday May 6th.
Stiletto-Toothed Monitor 1G
Creature - Lizard (c)
Deathtouch
When ~ is dealt combat damage, it gets -3/-0 and loses deathtouch (This effect doesn't at end of the turn).
3/2
"I hope the fact that it will never bite again consoles you as you die."
BTW, Privateer Galleon should be a Human in addition to its other creature types.
card UB02
Uncommon black vampire
Sengir Tax Collector 3BB
Creature - Vampire (U)
When Sengir Tax Collector enters the battlefield, put three
0/1 black Serf creature tokens onto the battlefield.
Sacrifice three Serfs: Destroy target nonblack creature.
"You will repay your debt. Blood is as valuable as gold to
me."
3/3
EVALUATIONS OF TEAM SERRA
Sengir Hounds :3mana::symb:
Seems like it could be a Vampire Hound as
well.
Reckless Minotaur 3RR
Creature - Minotaur Berserker (Uncommon)
~ must attack each turn if able.
Whenever ~ attacks, it deals 1 damage to each creature you control.
"If he's enjoys the rush of combat enough to harm his own allies, hire him." - Baron Sengir
5/3
That drawback is really unnecessary. It would be balanced without it. As is, it is way too underpowered. Look at Mass of Ghouls. Same card almost, no drawback.
Stampeding Elk 3G
Creature - Elk
Stampeding Elk can't be blocked by blue or black creatures.
3/3
Deceit fails before forthright. And nothing is more honest about its intentions than a charging elk.
I think this would be more suited at uncommon, as it seems just slightly above the curve of what you can get at common.
Fog Sprite 2G
Creature - Faerie {C}
Priest of the Lost Order WW {U}
Creature - Human Cleric
W, T: Up to two target creatures gain lifelink until end of turn.
0/2
"Though Serra was long gone they still taught others of her piety."
Serra's back now, but I'll buy that this is what they did during the interim. Seems fine in terms of balance though.
Order of Serra WW
Creature - Human Knight (U)
First strike
WW: Protection from red and from black until end of turn.
2/1
Strong, but perfectly feasible. I think the double white in the ability cost is what balances it. A cost with only one white would have to cost a bit more. Should write out that it "gains" protection.
Trench Dweller 4UU
Creature - Serpent (C)
Trench Dweller can't attack unless defending player controls an island.
Whenever Trench Dweller blocks, you may put target creature blocked by it to the bottom of its owner's library.
4/6
Way too strong, especially for a common. It blocks really well anyway, why does it need the ability? That just makes it a massive pain, as it will almost never die in combat. At uncommon MAYBE, but only MAYBE. A six mana 4/6 blue can get, but not with that good of an ability at common.

Go Team Feroz!
Creature - Hound (C)
Intimidate
Whenever a creature dealt damage by Sengir Hounds this turn is put into a graveyard, if that creature had a +1/+1 counter on it, put a +1/+1 counter on Sengir Hounds.

I like it... I like it a lot. It seems a bit underpowered (it could even cost B), but at common I guess its just fine. Decent flavor text too. 8/10
Anaba Fire Runner :1mana::symr:
8/10
Charging Wolverine -- :3mana::symg:
8/10
ced395:
Aysen Medic :3mana::symw:
7/10
Psionic Gatemage :1mana::symu::symu:
Creature -Dwarf Wizard[u]
Defender
:1mana::symu:: ~ gets +1/+1 until end of turn.
: Target creature gets -X/-0 until end of turn, where X is ~'s power.
2/5
"You'll nae be gettin' by me that' easily, young bandit!" -Varghar Mindblade, Isle Warden
6/10
Baron's Hunter :2mana::symb::symb:
It could easily cost less, but I understand the slight lack of power (this is from homelands, after all ;))
9/10

Sorry about the confusion.
