Default [Official] 3D Magic Cards & Life Counters Thread

[Official] 3D Magic Cards & Life Counters Thread

If you've ever made a 3D Magic card, wanted to make a 3D Magic card, or just thought they were cool, this is the thread to post it in!

Post your pictures, ask for advice, etc. If you want to have someone make you a card or ask about getting a card you see posted, please keep it to private messages. There's lots of information about the how in the Tutorial Thread but feel free to ask questions here, too.

I've been making 3D CCG cards for a couple of years now, and just recently started doing it with Magic cards. Here's one of the first Magic cards I did:
Phelddagrif:
These days I'm mostly working on EDH generals, since then I actually get to play with them. The first EDH deck I ever built was Phelddagrif, hence the card above. Here's one of my current generals:
Karona, False God:

My other generals from this thread:
Kaervek the Merciless - Momir Vig, Simic Visionary - Wort, Boggart Auntie
Nicol Bolas - Oros, the Avenger - Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund
Numot the Devastator
Kresh the Bloodbraided - Atogatog
Scion of the Ur-Dragon
Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief
Asmira, Holy Avenger - Lorthos, the Tidemaker
Intet the Dreamer - Lord of Tresserhorn
Azami, Lady of Scrolls - Sharuum the Hegemon
Child of Alara
Braids, Conjurer Adept
Mangara of Corondor - Jhoira of the Ghitu
Captain Sisay - Balthor the Defiled
Torsten Von Ursus - Sivitri Scarzam

ive done a little bit of messing around with things of this nature but the only method i know involves using multiples of the subject matter and tiny foam spacers

Just wondering, how does that work out when your general gets Condemned?

I've seen other 3D cards at a Game Store I went to in Buffalo. They had some cool one's like Jester's Cap, Akroma, Angel of Fury, and a Mogg Fanatic.

Some ppl that I know have asked about EDH Generals in 3d form. I think if something happens to the general to make it leave the Battlefield, others have decided that you would need a flat General card as well for these instances. That way it looks no different than any other card int he deck.

Love your work Shazaam. You should post your Momir and Wort here as well. Make it a gallery of sorts so we can share our work. I've been doing this for a couple of years but haven't made too many 3d cards. Most of what I had made sold @ the Houston RoE Prerelease. So I'll be working on some more here in the next few weeks, hopefully.

Now, onto my works (sorry about image sizes in advance):

Final Fortune:

This was a commissioned piece for HomelandsRules

Tanglesap:

This was taken before I glued the background onto it. I may do one with the background missing as i like the way it looks.

I use other cards as spacers; it doesn't give as much depth between layers, but I like the more solid feel it gives to the completed card. Of course, I'm pretty sure that Seishiro Ookubo uses foam spacers and his work is the best I've seen. Speaking of which, does anyone know if he still goes to any conventions or major events as a guest artist? I'd love to see his work in person.

I have an extra copy of Karona to shuffle in if I need to; haven't had to yet. For most of my other cards I don't have an extra - if I have to shuffle them in I use a proxy. My Karona deck has copies of a bunch of legends in it like Lorthos, the Tidemaker and Kresh, the Bloodbraided and I have no more copies left after cutting all mine for 3d, so I have them proxied in as well and switch to the 3d version when they hit the battlefield.

That 3d Akroma must have been pretty sweet. I imagine it was like Karona, where all of the detail is piecework in the body. I'd like to take a crack at it myself, but at $3.25 a pop ...not unless it's a commission.

Here's my most recent commission:
Kaervek the Merciless:
He took a lot longer than I expected. There is just so much detail in every layer, plus his body required a bunch of piecework to look right.

And the ones I posted in the tutorial thread:
Momir Vig:

Wort, Boggart Auntie:

@ Megabug: i def can't wait to see what you got. Seeing the art of others really inspires me to try even harder.

@Shazaam: i was wondering, how the heck do you do the background to karona. i have yet to play with that type of bg but i have a piece coming up that may benefit from that type of bg.

Serot - I decided to answer your Q in the tutorial thread to add it to the pile of ideas there.

I'm also excited to see those, Megabug. I'm curious to see which Unsummon you used (I think either Conflux/10E or ABU art would both be great for 3d).

Here's another card I made. I just finished a commissioned Karrthus, too, and I'll get that art up soon.

Oros, the Avenger:

Edit: Here's Karrthus and Nicol Bolas. I'm putting Nicol Bolas and Momir Vig up on the auction site.

Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund:

You're doing this to RARES AND MYTHICS?

Imma find where you live and steal all your rares, because obviously you either:

A. Can't be trusted with them,
B. Have too many of them, or,
C. Both.

You are acting like these cards are worth anything... Besides, they are his cards, let him do whatever he wants to them.
