Welcome to the Card Creation League! For May, we will be building a full set based on a return to the setting of Homelands, the closed plane of Ulgrotha.
The Card Creation League is a monthly contest in which players compete over seven rounds. Each month has an overall theme and/or story, determined by that month's host.
Each round, the host will assign a card creation task to the players. This task may vary between teams or players.
The first three rounds are open to everyone who joined in the sign-up thread, which will be posted near the end of the previous month. After these rounds, the Top 8 players will move on to three single elimination rounds to determine a winner.
Rounds usually last three to four days for submissions and about two days for critiques, but the host has final say in making the schedule.
For the first three rounds, players are divided into teams. Four teams is standard, but there may be more or less depending on the number of players. Each team will review another team's cards during the critique period of that round.
Each player must submit a Top 3 ranking for the team he or she critiques at the end of each round. Each 1st place is worth 3 points, 2nd place 2 points, and 3rd place 1 point.
Additionally, each player can receive 2 bonus points per round. One point is awarded for posting a Top 3, and one point for providing critiques for that team's cards.
Suggested areas to critique include creativity, balance, printability, and relation to the overall theme or that player's previous cards.
Players who do not post a card or a Top 3 will be put on "probation." Top 3 violations for a round can be removed by posting or PMing the host with your Top 3 before the end of the next round. Any player that would receive a second violation is disqualified from further competition that month.
At the end of the first three rounds, the Top 8 players will be selected by points (usually the top 2 from each team). In the case of ties, there may be more than 8 players advancing. The host will determine matchups for single elimination. At the end of each elimination round, remaining players not in that matchup will choose a winner to advance. The host will break any ties.
The final round is determined by public poll.
This month, the CCL will be visiting the plane of Ulgrotha to construct a standalone large set. Here are the important parameters for the set:
Long after the events of Homelands, Baron Sengir still holds the most power in the plane. Recently, he came close to perfecting planar travel through the Rift left by ancient planeswalkers, but was foiled in his plan by a ward that had been left deep within by Feroz. This ward sealed the plane once again, but not before it had called back Feroz's ally, Sandruu, and even more incredibly reincarnated Feroz and his love, Serra. Inspired by these powerful allies, the factions of opposition to the Baron began to launch their plans, and conflict broke out. The Rift accident has had unpredictable effects, however, and inhabitants find themselves thrown in and out of the plane.
Main Creature types:
White - Human Clerics, Knights, Soldiers, etc.
Blue - Human and Dwarf Wizards, Faeries, Pirates
Black - Vampires, Humans, Bats, Shades, Spirits
Red - Minotaurs, Dwarves, Humans
Green - Humans, various animals
The main color conflict is between the Baron's forces in black and the village folk of white and green, in Aysen and An-Havva. In red, the Koskun mercenaries and Anaba minotaurs are available to the best offer. The dwarven and human wizards of the Wizard's School on the Floating Isle also cooperate with the Baron from time to time, but only enough to preserve their independence. They are concerned with raids from the thieves of Koskun as well.
The reawakened Ban of Feroz has claimed victims in strange ways, forcing cards to interact with the exile zone. One of the main mechanics will be Plot, as designed by Jimmy Groove. The reminder text for Plot is as follows:
Plot N (To plot N, exile the top {english(N)} card(s) of your library face down. You may look at it(them) at any time.)
Here is Jimmy's description of Plot:
Plot is a keyword action, always modified with a number. To plot X, you exile the top X cards of your library face down. You can look at these cards at any time. Cards exiled by a plot ability are considered to be "plotted" and can be referenced by any ability that checks for plotted cards. These abilities typically turn plotted cards face-up, at which point they are no longer plotted.
Abilities that look for plotted cards can find cards plotted by any plot ability you played. Face-down exiled cards that are were not exiled by a plot ability (as with Duplicity) are not plotted.
Unless an ability specifically says otherwise, you can only turn face-up your own plotted cards.
Plot is found primarily in blue, which is the color best suited for long-term planning. Its allies, white and black, also have a fairly large number of plot cards. Green and Red have fewer plot cards, mostly involved in cycles, but are also the colors which are best at opposing plot.
Example of play:
If on the first turn, you play this card:
Secretive Student
Creature - Human Wizard (C)
When Secretive Student enters the battlefield, plot 1 (Exile the top card of your library face down. You may look at it at any time.)
1/1
then on the second turn could play this card, using the plotted card as a resource.
Protective Plan
Instant (C)
Turn a plotted card face up. Prevent X damage to target creature or player, where X is the plotted card's converted mana cost.
There may be another mechanic allowing you to play spells from exile, I haven't decided yet. There will also be a color conflict sub-theme, with a number of color hosers.
With our common and uncommon creatures, we have a good foothold on the flavor of our new set. Now we have to flesh out its mechanical identity. Refer to the Mechanics section above for information on Plot. You can use this mechanic in your design this round, or you may build a card that takes advantage of Plot without using it directly.
To allow as much freedom as possible, this round you will choose which card code you want to use. I will try to update the list once a day with codes that have been claimed, but it would be good to skim the thread and make sure nobody else has taken that spot. You may claim a code in your placeholder and submit the card later.
There are a couple of restrictions:
No lands
No mythic rares
No new keywords (besides Plot)
No legendary creatures (yet)
Blank slots above are noncreatures. Creatures are specified where they should be.

Aysen Captain 1WW
Creature - Human Soldier (R)
When Aysen Captain Enters the battlefield, plot 2 (To plot 2, exile the top two cards of your library face down. You may look at them at any time)
Whenever you attack, you may turn a plotted creature card with converted mana cost equal to or less than the number of attacking creatures face up. If you do, put that creature onto the battlefield, tapped and attacking, then plot 2.

"With each attack on the Sengir, our plans for new Ulgrotha are closer to fruition"
- Rashka the Slayer
Nothing solid just yet but going to play around with the idea of a spell, that when it resolves, plots itself. The overal interaction I'm going for is that part of it's cost will be to un-plot something, so it will start by needing another card plotted to cast and giving you that card back to your hand. Then at that point if you have 2 copies of this spell you can use them to cast each other indefintaly, or at least till your out of mana.
also, where can we just chat and spitball about the set? I have ideas for things that don't really belong in a thread dedicated to the current round we are on.

When ~ comes into play, plot 4 (exile the top 4 cards of your library face down. You may look at those cards for as long as they remain exiled.)
At the beginning of your upkeep, look at the top X cards of your opponent's deck where X is the number of cards removed from the game. Choose any number of them and put them at the bottom of that player's deck in any order.
1/3 Some men fight battles. Others choose when they are fought.
I'm both a valiant and clever person; abrasive and quick-witted with my own unique set of standards. What I value in my life is autonomy, power, and righteousness; I do whatever I want so long as I fell that it is justified by my own principles, damn what others think. At my best I am glorious, exciting, and courageous; at my worst I am merciless, destructive, and violent.
Gathering BusinessG
Creature - Ferret (R)
Whenever an opponent's card is exiled, put a +1/+1 counter on Gathering Business.
1/1
Would want to be rare for limited reasons mostly. (i.e. the beetle in RoE) And yes, a business is a group of ferrets -.-' I would have used lizards, (the only other possible option for a 1/1 green critter in Homelands) but a group of those is a lounge, which is even worse. Plus ferrets make more flavor sense in terms of being intelligent enough to maybe percieve interactions with exile.

FracturedOrb (and others), although it hasn't been used in that way yet, there is a CCL Discussion thread linked in my signature that seems like the best place to ask general questions and make suggestions, so that we don't tie up this thread. Feel free to post there, it would indeed be helpful to keep this thread for submissions and critiques.
ced, you have a good point, but I'm just resigned to some inconsistency on the mechanic due to the nature of the project. I kind of think revealing cards is more fun, but it is more complex since it would require you to remember what the opponent has revealed. Turning the cards face up makes more flavor sense, as the plot becomes open.

Quote from Boing »
Into the Maw of Hell is a name so awesome, it deserves its own song.
It would be about a world of brown spikes and red fire, where men fight and scream and become blurry masses. Then it would change to somber, we learn that this glorious place exists only in Raymond Swanland's head. To visit it, you must enter the maw of Hell itself.

RU06
Nothing solid just yet but going to play around with the idea of a spell, that when it resolves, plots itself. The overal interaction I'm going for is that part of it's cost will be to un-plot something, so it will start by needing another card plotted to cast and giving you that card back to your hand. Then at that point if you have 2 copies of this spell you can use them to cast each other indefintaly, or at least till your out of mana.
also, where can we just chat and spitball about the set? I have ideas for things that don't really belong in a thread dedicated to the current round we are on.

Oy, they killed him in his sleep, they did. But I 'eard that there was nary a broken lock. Some'un let 'em in on the inside, I say. - Ulf, An-Havva citizen
ced, you have a good point, but I'm just resigned to some inconsistency on the mechanic due to the nature of the project. I kind of think revealing cards is more fun, but it is more complex since it would require you to remember what the opponent has revealed. Turning the cards face up makes more flavor sense, as the plot becomes open.
