I'm surprised it wasn't first errata'd to be a vampire considering Wizard's love of the tribe over zombies *rolls eyes*
But really, I like the choice. Would have been more effective in standard if RoE continued the nonbasic land theme a bit more. And the best non-basics in standard are fetchland...
No play since Lorwyn was still legal? Perfect choice!
It was probably printed back when Lorwyn was legal, as well. You know, R&D works a year to a year and a half ahead of time, right? They just pick out powerful cards that are strong enough to potentially see play and cool cards for casual. They don't actually have any way of knowing what the real world will do in the future and one overlooked card could potentially supercharge a mediocre deck to top teir. Afterall, Ranger of Eos saw play in the Future Future league while Lorwyn was still going strong, but didn't take off in the real world until Boros Bushwhacker. Wizards was supposed to be a real deck in Onslaught. Dragonstorm would have rolled to counterspells without Gigadrowse. Time Sieve fell from grace because a normally janky, 5 cent common artifact rotated. Bitterblossom didn't help rogues and instead, made faeries the deck to beat. Vivid lands and Reflecting pool gave rise to 5CC. Skullclamp and Jitte were never tested. Serra Avenger was supposed to be a chase rare. Jund probably wasn't supposed to make blue nearly unplayable in standard. Of course, the planeswalker control deck probably would have never risen had traditional control been viable. Vampire Hexmage made a jank rare from years ago feature in a top teir, extended deck. Unerrataing Flash broke Legacy with a sleeper called Protean Hulk. There's probably tons more cases that we never heard about and cards that ended up worth a quarter instead of tearing up tournaments because something was missed. Really, Anathemancer could have been good if Jund hadn't made blue control bad with its card advantage and probably was quite good in post ROE standard for the Future Future league.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO, damn!!! Where is rhox war monk wizards?? Damn I can't believe this ☺☺☺☺. Next time you print such a good card like the monk give it a decent artwork, not some damn ugly rhox with pankakes. (sorry for angry mindless spam).

Easy, there, there's still August and September left for Rhox War Monk.
Anyway, I agree that Anathemancer was a poor choice of a FNM card. There's a wide list of cards that would be better in this position.

Here's a few reasons:
John 3:16 John 8:12 1 Peter 2:24 James 1:12-13
Hebrews 13:8 Ephesians 6:10-17 Psalm 86:8-10
Disappointing choice. I remember killing someone with this card all by itself. That was fun, but it's been sitting in my binder since rotation. I wish Wizards would stick to cards that see play (like BBE).

And every other month until the end of time since Monk is seeing play in Cubes and Legacy and FNM promos are chosen quasi-randomly (although it usually shifts from "standard - non-standard - standard again" in monthy rotations).
The funny thing is that if you look at the land bases of the top Standard decks right now about 2/3rds of their mana bases are still non basic lands. Maybe that's not quite as much as when lorwyn/shadowmoor were legal but still a pretty decent amount.
@Arven - Blightning deck wins is a deck it actually showed up in the top 8 at a few ptqs

LOL THIS SUCKS BBE WAS THE BEST AND SHOULD BE REPRINTED TEN GRILLION TIMES
That was my impression of the Jund player whenever one of these gets posted.
This isn't bad, Anathemancer is cool for casual decks and fun play which, although isn't particularly common here, is kinda fun when you get to use all of the bad cards.
As other's said bad promos are bad. Im sure everyone enjoys when Wizards prints a good FNM card. Some are good in Standard, and some in other formats like bloodbraid elf and O-ring which are both VERY played Standard cards. Ghostly Prison in fine in EDH. But then Cloudpost,Visonary and now Anathemancer makes it feel really bad. Hopefully wizards is reprinting these or foreshadowing instead of printing cards and making Duel Decks for cards that rotate a month or two later. We will find out soon.
It would be played except if you are playing it you should be playing Ruinblasters because it is a 10 times better card. They should have just made a Ruinblaster FNM promo lol.
Anathemancer fits nothing but Casual. In EDH it really depends on your play group, most decks I have seen are mono color. (well the super competetive ones like Azami, Roffellos, Ghoto and so many green decks).

If you are counting Fetch Land maybe but those shouldnt really be counted for Anath. Brad Nelson's UW plays 12 non fetch, non basics and 12 basics. Mythic plays the same non fetch non basics and basics depending on your deck list. Super Freinds plays the same number. RDW, well I dont think I need to say lol.
I do agree that it is actually a deck tho (even tho it didnt win a ptq it got 2nd in a couple).
Instead of competitive T2 uncommons and commons, I would prefere they print EDH staple uncommons and commons. Competitive metagames change so quickly that the time the art is commissioned and the card printed, the card could stop to be played.
EDH, on the other hand, doesn't change its staple so often. Lightning Greaves was a wonderful idea.
That would be a wonderful idea, not just for edh but cards good in multiple formats, tho making standard cards makes the most sense because it is the most played format. So they cant be blamed for that.
So what you're saying is, you know that there is a crowd that plays it, you're just unhappy because it's not for you?
No, I am unhappy that it is a small % of players that would play the card if even and a lot of people are unhappy about their choice in it. I actually dont even know if that crowd would play it at all. It again is a very small portion of the magic community I would assume (tho I cant say for certain).
I believe making more played cards into FNM promos is much better for everyone especially like others were saying Rhox War Monk, Wild Nacatl which are played in other formats and have not even gotten a promo yet. This also makes casual players get more into the depth of magic, gives them good cards that would otherwise be not the easiest thing to get and can eventually actually makes them better magic players. (They can then value card quality better as an example).
Edit- I would be fine with a played Extended or Legacy card for example, even tho I dont play those formats. I know a lot of people would like it and it again helps other players get cards that are harder to get and makes them better players.

OK. I am happy that I misinterpreted your comment.
We ought to be able to vote on FNM cards. June 2010 we vote on June 2011's card. Maybe they can narrow the list a bit (otherwise our first four months are going to be Mana Drain, Force of Will, Chain Lightning, and Karakas), or give us a choice of 5 cards each month. Maybe say "June is Standard month - pick from cards that will be Standard legal next June." "September is Legacy month - pick from older cards that haven't yet been foiled out."
Only problem is that then they'd have to make another reserve list - cards they don't want used as FNM promos.

EDIT: So, ok, the art isn't...horrible. Certainly there have been worse, such as Browbeat or Tendrils of Agony.

Imagine if it came out while it was played, and then people stopped playing it.
Anyway, Ana is all right. I wasn't really a fan of it's original art so maybe this one would give it a new, clean look.
