“Turn the right corner in Sin City and you can find…anything.”
Her low, sultry voice welled up out of the dark, like the prayer of a fallen angel. She had a whisper-thin silhouette, outlined by a halo of pale moonlight streaming through the window, a halo interrupted by the feeble glow of the cigarette at her lips. Her pursed, luxurious lips…Your eyes wandered over her. No wings or devil’s horns were visible at first glance, but you could glimpse plenty of curves, jealously enclosed by her skimpy dress.
She leaned back against the wall for support, casually smoking her cigarette. She talked like she was the only one there, but she had to have known that everyone was hanging on every last word she spoke…
“Another starless night. And cold enough to turn blood to ice. All the sounds of the city were missing. No cars. No music blaring from windows. No noisy brats playing in the street. Even the trickling in the gutters was gone. It was like the whole city was holding its breath. And maybe it was…” She paused, for a moment.
“Some of us have lived in this neighborhood our entire lives. We’re used to the dirt, the smell, the narrow alleys and broken pavement. It’s our home. For others, it’s the first time they’ve been here, and they won’t shed any tears when they leave it behind. It’s only another job to them. To the rest, it’s just the place you end up after your dreams drift away like smoke from a cigarette.” She slowly exhaled, for emphasis, a gesture as exquisite and controlled as an artist’s brush-stroke.
“It started the same way it’s always started: with a scream. Grates on your nerves like nails on a chalkboard.” She raked her nails down the wall, for emphasis, and there was a universal wince. She didn’t seem to notice.
“Then came more screams, little zipping sounds from silenced bullets burying themselves into walls, and wet plops as bodies hit the pavement. I love the little plops,” she said off-handedly.
“Used to be the neighborhood kept the mob out by putting cash in the Mayor’s pocket. He got votes and protection money, and we got peace and cops. But too many people were moving away, getting out, as things in the City kept going from bad to worse. Soon enough there was no more money left to give. Then the mob started to move in on our turf.”
Her voice took on a hard edge, a staccato rhythm. “Some of us tried to fight back. We stayed in groups. We looked out for one another. But one by one, they picked us off. Someone would go missing, then turn up with their throat slashed open, and their guts spilled all over the kitchen floor.”
"That’s when the rats started to abandon ship. Tried to run, get out while they had a chance. Cowards.” The word erupted like the lash of a whip, anger suffusing her doll’s face. Then, she took another puff on her cigarette, and lapsed back into serenity like the sea after a storm.
“Those of us who stayed wanted revenge, or justice, or whatever you prefer to call it. But this wasn’t a fair fight. They could strike us from the shadows. Pick us off one by one, day after day. Time was on their side. The bodies kept piling up, higher, and higher, until the stench of blood and death became a permanent feature. We knew they were hiding among us, somewhere in the neighborhood, but we just didn’t know who.”
Her voice stiffened with brittle determination. “But we were sick of running. We were ready to face what we had to face. But no one was going to have to face it alone. Not anymore.”
“After they killed the neighborhood doc, we made our move. The last of us banded together, rounded up everyone into the old town hall, and padlocked the door.”
"And then there was the man with the red sneakers. He gave us a wonderful little speech to kick things off. He said, 'No one leaves until this is finished. No escape. No surrender. No mercy. We got to kill every last rat bastard one of them. Not for revenge. Not because they deserve it. Not because it'll make the world a better place. We need a heap of bloody bodies so when mob boss Wallenquist looks over his charts of profits and losses, he'll see what it costs him to mess with us.'"
"Him, I kind of liked," she mused to herself, in the same way a tigress might say she liked to eat lamb, or pork.
"Then he aimed his tired, boyish little eyes at each of us, weighing, us, judging us, wondering which of us had the guts to get the job done."
"And he said: 'Alright. Let's do this.'"
The First Night of the Old Town Massacre:
Town Win Condition: The scum must die.
Tonight, no kill attempts may be sent in. All other abilities will function as normal. Good luck.
Day will begin at 4:00 PM EST, Saturday December 10th.
I'd just want to notice you that I'll be out of town this weekend, so if the game doesn't start before I'm gone (~13.00 P.M. GMT tomorrow) could you please notify about it in the game thread?
During the night, those of you who are still awake each notice a professional-looking, type-written piece of paper slipped under your doors. It reads:
"A town as troubled as this one needs all the help it can get. I'm no angel, but I won't let our city go down without a fight. You could call me an interested party. You might even call me a friend. If you must call me a name, call me Dark Horse."
You rise with the dawn. No use hiding from destiny. You’ll decide your fate on the battlefield of public opinion, terrain as fickle and treacherous as any army ever contended with.
One by one, you make your way from your rooms in the town hall, to the central conference chambers. Hazy sunlight drifts through the windows, highlighting the recently disturbed dust floating through the air, and sending black spiders skittering from their webs to hide in the shadows.
Does anyone else think that this <snip> ...means we should start a mass claim right now?
No, because "what you've tried in the past won't work" does not imply "what you haven't tried will work".
Eh ? What ? What joke ?

On the topic of things that scare me what do you all think of Dark Hoarse telling us we are a troubled town...? Do you think that he means the town itself or Sin City?
Oh and for being number one and on the top of the list random VOTE: Fadeblue.
No, Thats prolly just flavor. But w/e. If you guys want to believe we don't have a doc I don't care, but I'll just assume we do or have some other kind of powerful protection roles (bodyguards).

Well, I'm obviously not prepared to believe anything at this point. But I don't think we should count on a doc in this game, although if there isn't one, I would expect other types of protection roles.
Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, the wisdom to know the difference, and a ****ing chainsaw.
Whaddya mean the bit about the doc might be there to scare us ? Of course it's there to scare us ! What did you expect from a game set in Sin City, fluffy bunnies ?

I'm pretty sure there's a doc in the game; can you imagine how much hate the more well-known people in the game would get if there were nobody to deter the mafia from going after them? The standard doc is too vital a role to just leave out.
I haven't seen the movie, so I'm afraid I can't comment on bunnies and howitzers, though.
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'
Maybe we shouldn't speculate on the doc thing just yet. If there is a doc, its best they stay under wraps anyway. Has anyone seen this movie? Obviously you only need to answer if its yes, so we can pump you for info.
I suppose it is best to leave the doc issue alone. I just don't want us to make play decisions based on the idea that we have a role that we might not have.
I saw the movie, but iirc, it started out as a comic, right? I was thinking it would be more based around that, which I have not read, although I heard that the movie did the comic justice.
An the point here would be that we don't want a townie doc (if he exists) telling any tales, dead or alive. The only thing that speculating about the existance of the doc will do is get him or her to screw up and tip off the scum as to who they might be.
Something's really weird. My character is from a comic, but it's definitely not Sin City, of that I can assure you. Given that I'm 99% sure that Dark Horse is not a Sin City character, I don't see this as too big of an issue, but I just want to get that out there.
I have seen both the movie and read all the comics, in case anyone's curious.
HR: There have been crossovers. That could be possible.
I saw the movie. Haven't read comics. It really doesn't matter IMO though. I think Az has the foresight for this, and the movie is really only 3 sub-plots. Only comic readers would know enough to out guess the mod.

Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone
To the well organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.
Reading this thread has been entertaining. Not all that informative, but entertaining.
As for Sin City I did not see the movie or read the comics so I will miss alot of this I guess but I doubt Az would leave us out too much. Can anyone give a rundown of the basic plot of the movie?
You are correct. Perhaps it could mean something related to the comics? I read the comics and saw the movie.
"A town as troubled as this one needs all the help it can get. I'm no angel, but I won't let our city go down without a fight. You could call me an interested party. You might even call me a friend. If you must call me a name, call me Dark Horse."
The bolded parts make me think this person is pro-town. Maybe not entirely, but at least partially.
So, the questions are:
1. What is Dark Horse?
2. Why are they in this game?
3. is this person a player or an NPC?
4. is this a person in the Sin City universe, or was he/she created?
5. is the doctor dead?
1. (Note: This person is inside the town hall.)
If they were a player, I don't think they'd write in such a cryptic way. I think Azrael was the message creator, meaning he wants to inform us of DH's existence. Why would he want to do that? What abilities might this DH have that are so important that his existence must be known?
2. This person could be either a guide for the town or a neutral so crucial his existence must be known (cult-leader powerful). The former seems more likely imo.
3. I'm going to guess NPC because it just makes sense in my head.
4. I do not recall a Dark Horse in the comic.
5. I believe so. I don't think its THAT huge of a disadvantage; the doctor gets a block in once a game if they're lucky, an no doc allows for more power town roles while giving the mafia the ability to punish roleclaims. In fact, I like it.
Checking in. Can't post much because I seem to have caught the flu, but I hope it goes away soon.
In skimming over the thread, though, I don't really like the discussion about whether the doc is alive or not. If there is a doc, this can only potentially hurt us as the doc may end up giving himself/herself away in the course of the discussion. Meanwhile, such a discussion gives us no benefit.
As for Dark Horse, I'm more inclined to believe it's a player rather than an NPC, just based on the fact that Az put it in a separate post, some time in the middle of Night 0. I'm not dismissing the possibility that Az is intentionally make it look like it's some kind of night ability, but at this point I think it's more likely an actual player (although I have no idea why the message would be written that way).
I have seen the movie (good movie by the way) but have never read the comics. To the people who have read the books, did the movie cover all of them or are there more? And, if there are crossovers, which universe would they be from?
Dark Horse's messages seems to be a night ability, somebody could announce their presence with a message written by Azrael. Though I don't see much of a benifit to it at the moment.
The movie covered 4 of the books (i think). I'm not even sure that the books are part of this game; it may be movie-only persona. We should make a list later.
I wonder: who are the mafia? besides that guy with the golden eye, the pimps dont get much character development. maybe its those mercenaries who went after jackie boy's head?
Really active in here isn't it? I guess I shouldn't expect less from a game where over half of the people were invited. I have seen the movie (didn't like it) and have not read any of the comics. I also agree any discussion regarding the doctor should stop. In fact fos: cropcircles for bringing it up in the first place.
Hello all. I can tell this game is going to be a mess already.
I like the emphasis on "Don't trust Anybody." Hopefully the mafia can't trust each other either.
Most interesting thing I've seen is Highroller claiming a role not in the Comics. That seems very odd. I'd ask the question if anyone else has a role not in the comics (or movie I suppose, though they are pretty much the same). If not then it seems we have a very improbable role, or Highroller is gambiting because he doesn't want to claim his true role, and he's using the "Dark Horse" note as cover.
Armlx, you mentioned cross-overs. What are you talking about there. If that makes the claim more plausible, then I'd have to retract the above comment.
Looking forward to a good game, for as long as I last.

Quote from Bateleur »
Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.
Right then. I guess I will answer the above questions in my opinion except five.
1. What is Dark Horse?
Sounds like a nuetral player who leans town to me. Someone who can communicate with the town during the night and who we can contact if we can figure out who it is. Maybe the reason it is so cyptic. Maybe a kill-for-hire?
2. Why are they in this game?
Like I said I really do not know. Maybe a kill-for-hire?
3. is this person a player or an NPC?
Both are very possible but being an NPC seems to have any risk that the role may involve away from the town. Therefore I think that the only way for it to be a balanced role is for it to be a player. Can't rule out the possibility of it being a NPC though.
4. is this a person in the Sin City universe, or was he/she created?
Maybe somebody has an ablity to guess who Dark Horse is each night. Most likely pro town. Then if this person guesses right, Dark Horse gains more abilities other than just being able to announce himself.
My character I don't think is in either the book or the movie, but since I haven't seen/read them (just skimmed that Wikipedia link), I could be dead wrong.
First of all, I didn't mean to start a huge discussion with the doc comment. I just don't want people to make play decisions based on the idea that there is a doc, when it seems are mod has hinted otherwise. I doubt that anyone in this game is newb enough to give themselves away as doc, but discussion on that matter should stop as there's really nothing more to say about it.
Next, I'm not sure about the role info that's being thrown around. Specifically, my role does not have a name, just a title. Therefore, people claiming characters are giving away way too much, and that should stop now. If too many actual characters step forward, it will be much easier for the mafia to pick out power roles.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, Old Town is the part of the city that is run by prostitutes. So if you only saw the movie, it's the third story you should probably be thinking about.
Day 1
One by one, you make your way from your rooms in the town hall, to the central conference chambers. Hazy sunlight drifts through the windows, highlighting the recently disturbed dust floating through the air, and sending black spiders skittering from their webs to hide in the shadows.

Little sense indeed. Hawkeye, are you roleplaying something again?
No idea whether my character's in the movie or the comics, brief google suggests made up character but I didn't look very hard. My character does share a name with someone from a different comic, though (totally different job and description, though). Could be coincidence. Here's something vague- HR, would you say the number one colour associated with the name or appearance of the main character/s in your comic is green?
Random early discussion-starter thoughts:
1. Kenji turned CropCircles joke about a day 1 mass claim "into
Vote:CropCircles cause he wanted to out the doc on day 1...
2. A few people trying to look really squaky clean in response by telling us we don't want the doc (if they exist) exposed day 1. Thankyou Captains Obvious, and I would bet at least on of you was a scum trying hard to look suitably aghast at the thought of exposing a doc day 1...
3. Most intrigued that Aurora instantly decided that Dark Horse is good. Could be true. But did you expect a scum writer to say "YARGH, we're going to KILL YOU ALL! Oh, and believe this information I feed you!"
I concur with fade's analysis from the timing that it's probably a player using a night ability.

Town Win Condition: The scum must die.

It’s time to hunt some scum.

No, because "what you've tried in the past won't work" does not imply "what you haven't tried will work".

I haven't seen the movie, so I'm afraid I can't comment on bunnies and howitzers, though.

I saw the movie, but iirc, it started out as a comic, right? I was thinking it would be more based around that, which I have not read, although I heard that the movie did the comic justice.

I have seen both the movie and read all the comics, in case anyone's curious.
I saw the movie. Haven't read comics. It really doesn't matter IMO though. I think Az has the foresight for this, and the movie is really only 3 sub-plots. Only comic readers would know enough to out guess the mod.
As for Sin City I did not see the movie or read the comics so I will miss alot of this I guess but I doubt Az would leave us out too much. Can anyone give a rundown of the basic plot of the movie?

Dark Horse's messages seems to be a night ability, somebody could announce their presence with a message written by Azrael. Though I don't see much of a benifit to it at the moment.
As for the doc, I have no idea.

4. is this a person in the Sin City universe, or was he/she created?
...? Not a clue.
also, my character is in the movie. does anybody have a character only from the books?

Next, I'm not sure about the role info that's being thrown around. Specifically, my role does not have a name, just a title. Therefore, people claiming characters are giving away way too much, and that should stop now. If too many actual characters step forward, it will be much easier for the mafia to pick out power roles.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, Old Town is the part of the city that is run by prostitutes. So if you only saw the movie, it's the third story you should probably be thinking about.

Jesus, it hurts just to breath.
Whoever the bastitch is that did this to me last night was a pro, yeah a real pro, but he should have finished the job.

I don't know who you are or why you wanted me to vote for RafaelK this morning. Well, here ya go, bastitch, Vote: RafaelK . Don't think this squares us, not by a long shot. Unvote: RafaelK
RafaelK, you got any idea who did this and why?
Anyone got any ideas how someone got int my room, here in town hall, and did this? Yeah wiseguy the door was locked.

1. Kenji turned CropCircles joke about a day 1 mass claim "into
More later.
You gotta be kidding me.
Well, RafaelK, I'm going to FOS you for that. But yes.
