Well hello hello hello! It's that magical time of the year, butterflies and dragons flying, flowers blooming, and new magical phenomena erupting everywhere. Ahhh, truly a wonderful time of the year!
Welcome to the Card Creation League!
The Card Creation League is a monthly contest in which players compete over seven rounds. Each month has an overall theme and/or story, determined by that month's host.
Each round, the host will assign a card creation task to the players. This task may vary between teams or players.
The first three rounds are open to everyone who joined in the sign-up thread, which will be posted near the end of the previous month. After these rounds, the Top 8 players will move on to three single elimination rounds to determine a winner.
Rounds usually last three to four days for submissions and about two days for critiques, but the host has final say in making the schedule.
For the first three rounds, players are divided into teams. Four teams is standard, but there may be more or less depending on the number of players. Each team will review another team's cards during the critique period of that round.
Each player must submit a Top 3 ranking for the team he or she critiques at the end of each round. Each 1st place is worth 3 points, 2nd place 2 points, and 3rd place 1 point.
Additionally, each player can receive 2 bonus points per round. One point is awarded for posting a Top 3, and one point for providing critiques for that team's cards.
Suggested areas to critique include creativity, balance, printability, and relation to the overall theme or that player's previous cards.
Players who do not post a card or a Top 3 will be put on "probation." Top 3 violations for a round can be removed by posting or PMing the host with your Top 3 before the end of the next round. Any player that would receive a second violation is disqualified from further competition that month.
At the end of the first three rounds, the Top 8 players will be selected by points (usually the top 2 from each team). In the case of ties, there may be more than 8 players advancing. The host will determine matchups for single elimination. At the end of each elimination round, remaining players not in that matchup will choose a winner to advance. The host will break any ties.
The final round is determined by public poll.
Each round, the players have a chance of getting a total of 100 points toward their score. Each score is determined by the following equation:
The grading of 3 points for first place, 2 points for second and 1 for third still stands. This is also the case for up to 2 points for crits and Top3.
Total points of player A in round N = 100 * X/Y
Where:
X = Total number of points given by judges + Bonus points for critiques/Top3
Y = Total number of points possible (3*Number of judges + Bonus Points)
This way the grading is more streamlined in the fact that all rounds up to going to top 8 are graded equally, and there is no handicap for any team that has fewer judges.
Each player starts the next round with the score that he previously had, and another possible 100 points is given to him at the end of that round. Therefore, there is a possible 300 points before the CCL goes to top 8.
You receive one point for submitting a top 3 on time, and one additional point if you critique all of the cards you judged.
Team Scientist Max points - 8 netn9 – Dropped
WhisperedThunder –250 - advancing Kev the walker-Dropped yareg - Dropped
ohmusama- 212 –Perfect 100 - advancing
MZC89 - 132
As a result, Gerrard's Mom, ImpulsiveKnowledge, BlueLotus, Darkfire Games, DeusofCalamity, Krey, WhisperedThunder, and ohmusama will advance into the next round. Sorry to everyone else that you won't be able to compete this month, but I highly recommend you come back next month!
Ah, you are finally about to enter the portal. However, within your guild there is someone who is not pleased about this. Very displeased... Challenge:Create a legendary creature in your guild who will try to kill you (Read the spoiler below). Additionally, using the same colors, create the spell that he/she/it will attempt to kill you with.
It must be multicolored, and one of the colors must either be red or black. If one of those colors is in your guild, please choose the other. However, you are allowed to choose not to use one of your guild's colors if you wish, as at this point it is clear that your enemy is no longer a true member of the guild.
Summary:
1. 2-3 colors
2. Is either red or black (possibly both)
3. Legendary
4. Must not already exist in Magic (Come on, this one's a gimmie ;))
So, join the summer frolic and fun and may the best spellslinger win! (Also, this is a flavorful month, feel free to include backstory wherever you want.)
Submissions will be due when July 22nd becomes July 23rd. Critiques will be due 12:00, July 24th EST. In a critique, you critique each other match.

I opened one last year, got two crap worldwake packs and 8x scathe zombies, which I promptly hid around my sister's apartment for her roommates to find. But, yeah, it was a piece of crap.
You, sir, have just won the internet. Congratulations.
Witherbranch, Monarch Tree2GBB
Creature - Treefolk Wizard Advisor {R}
~ is indestructible as long as any opponent controls 3 or less creatures. 1BB,T: Creatures target opponent controls gets -1/-1 until end of turn.
3/7
Withered Roots 1GBB
Instant {U}
Put two -1/-1 counters on all creatures target player controls. "For trees, roots are their lifeline. If you mess that up, soon that creature will die. So if that tree does not obey me, I will make sure that happens." - Witherbranch, Monarch Tree
Witherbranch was one of the higher members of the Conclave at it's height, and leading adviser to the Chorus. However, he was consumed by the dark nature of his kind, and staged an uprising within the conclave to have it become more of a monarchal society rather than the socialist society that is the Selesnya Conclave. With the aid of Tolsimir, The Conclave drove Witherbranch out of Ravnica, and he has been hiding in Shadowmoor since then. Upon hearing of the portal to the new world, he found his opportunity to start a new Selesnya Monarchy, and so he then returned to Ravnica undetected to stop the Conclave from getting their hands on what he believed was his rightful property... and he brought along some of the shadowmoor magic with him. And that is where our story is now.
Sup. Sorry for neglecting crtiques the last round, bbut life suddenly got busy when we had four additional people over at the house who slept here for two days, all the while my dad's back decided to give out, resulting in that my dad could barely walk.
Sorry again, and see you next month.
I'm sorry for your troubles. If you had critiqued, you would have made it! So don't waste that talent! Return next month to win!
Also, @ Contestants: Is the challenge to narrow? I thought the black/red would be interesting flavor-wise, but if it hurts your creativity please let me know.

Doppelganger Andarius1UBB
Legendary Creature - Shapeshifter {R} 1B: Exile a creature card from a graveyard under Doppelganger Andarius. 1U: Doppelganger Andarius becomes a copy of a creature card exiled by it until end of turn.
2/2
Sorrowful DemiseXUB
Instant {U}
Destroy target creature with converted mana cost X or less. It can't be regenerated. Then that creature's controller puts the top X cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.
[edit=Yeah, I was watching Inception and missed the deadline, if you want to disregard this, feel free]
Premise: Andarius loved Serradin, but Serradin would not return her love. Turning to darkness in sorrow, she comes to the conclusion the only way to truely be with Serradin is for her to kill him and become one with his essence. Her attempts fail, and she narrowly escapes. However the darkness that has grown in Andarius' heart cannot be removed, and she continues in her misguided plans to kill Serradin, but she will have to wait until his guard is down.
So if my guild is BG, I am supposed to make a creature that is RG? Or R and either W or U? Can I make a BR creature?
The Endless Swarm3BG
Legendary Creature - Insect (R)
Insects you control get +1/+1.
At the end of any turn in which a player was dealt damage by an Insect you control, that player sacrifices a permanent, then you put a 1/1 black and green Insect creature token onto the battlefield.
Sacrifice an Insect: Return The Endless Swarm from your graveyard to the battlefield.
3/3
Flesheater Queen2BB
Creature - Insect (R)
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a larva counter on target creature. Then, if the number of larva counters on that creature is equal to or greater than its toughness, its controller sacrifices it and you put X 1/1 black Insect creature tokens onto the battlefield, where X is the number of larva counters on that creature.
1/3
Realm of Reclamation2BG
(Black ants larger than horses tear down charred buildings and take corpses in their mandibles as they forage through a burned city. In the distance, at the terminus of a trail of busy ants, huge lumpy spires like termite mounds rise high over the hills into the sky.)
Enchantment (R)
Whenever a permanent is put into an opponent's graveyard, you may pay 1. If you do, return a permanent card that shares a card type with that card from your graveyard to your hand. From the waste of the four-limbs's kingdoms, the insects built a realm that surpassed all others in size and complexity.
Stirring Swarm1BG
Instant (U)
Regenerate target creature and put X 1/1 black and green Insect creature tokens onto the battlefield, where X is that creature's toughness. The Swarm's instinctive response to danger is always the same: breed.
As the Swarm crawled to the portal, it was interrupted by a rain of stinging sparks. Landing heavily amongst the resultant flames, a single huge fire ant drone blocked the path. Axara was an escapee from the Shivan Hive, who sought to "liberate" the other insects from their enslavement to each other. Before thousands of compound eyes, Axara swelled in size, then scuttled forth, hot sparks flying with every step.
Axara, Rogue Drone2RG
(A large six-limbed red ant bursts out of a cocoon in a field of fire.)
Legendary Creature - Insect (R) 3R: Axara, Rogue Drone deals damage equal to its power to each creature. 1G: Regenerate Axara, then put a +1/+1 counter on Axara. Most drones are powerless without the hive. For Axara, his freedom was merely the beginning of his ascent.
2/2
Predatory GorgingRG
(A gigantic beetle explodes out of a bush, pinning down a lizard.)
Instant (C)
Target creature gets +3/+3 until end of turn. It deals damage equal to its power to target creature. That creature deals damage equal to its power to the first creature.
From the smallest insect to the largest baloth, all predators pour their ultimate strength into the moment of the catch.
Ralov, Jolrael's Chosen :2mana::symg::symg:
Legendary Creature - Centaur Shaman (R)
Shroud
When Ralov, Jolrael's Chosen deals damage to an opponent, you may untap all lands you control.
Creatures you control gain ":symg:: Regenerate this creature."
3/3 Jolrael chose Ralov to unite all the creatures of Jamuraa against any other evil that threatens their jungle home.
Quirion Scout :1mana::symg:
Creature - Elf Scout (U)
Forestwalk
As long as you control no tapped lands, Quirion Scout gains shroud and +1/+1.
1/1 Ralov trusted the elves knowledge of the lands to create an effective battle strategy in the defense of Jamuraa.
Ralov did not wanted to fail the task Jolrael gave him, so he decides that this new plane could provide new allies in the defense of Jamuraa. With his mission set Ralov sets out to the new plane accompanied by a squad of elves.
Search the Horizon :1mana::symg::symg:
Sorcery
As an additional cost to cast Search the Horizon, tap any number of creatures you control.
Reveal the top X cards of your library, where X is the number of creatures tapped to cast Search the Horizon. You may put a creature card revealed this way into your hand and/or a land card revealed this way into the battlefield tapped. Put all other cards revealed this way at the bottom of your ibrary in any order. The more hands available to explore, the better chances there are to find something.
Evergreen Cloak :symg::symg:
Artifact - Equipment (U)
Equipped creature gains "As long as you control no untapped lands, equipped creature is indestructible. As long as you control a tapped land, equipped creature has :1mana::symg:: Regenerate equipped creature."
Equip - Return two lands you control to your hand. Ralov provided his troops with the strongest armor available, not of metal, but of living wood. Light as a feather and strong as a dragon's scale.
Rufai, Centaur WarchiefRRGG
Legendary Creature - Centaur Warrior (R)
Haste, Trample
Rufai, Centaur Warchief gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each other attacking creature you control.
3/3 "The only way to insure our peace is to is to destroy our enemies before they had a chance to attack us" - Rufai, Centaur Warchief
Warrior's FuryRG
Instant (R)
Kicker RG (You may pay an additional RG as you cast this spell.)
Attacking creatures you control get +2/+2 until end of turn.
If Warrior's Fury was kicked, untap all creatures that attacked this turn. There is an additional combat phase. "Stand down Ralov. My army shall conquer this new plane and use its resources to destroy our enemies." - Rufai, Centaur Warchief
Forns, Auriok Champion3WW Legendary Creature - Human Soldier* R
When Forns enters the battlefield, search your library for a card named Razor Nettle, Razorfield Epee, or Taj-Nar Talar and put that card onto the battlefield equipped to Forns. Shuffle your library afterwards. 3: Attach target Equipment to Forns.
4/4
Razor Nettle3 Artifact - EquipmentU
Target creature gets +0/+1, has reach and "2: This creature deals 1 damage to target creature blocking or blocked by equipped creature."
Equip 2
Razorfield Epee3 Artifact - EquipmentU
Equipped creature gets +1/+0, has first strike, and "Whenever a creature dealt combat damage by equipped creature is put into a graveyard this turn, draw a card."
Equip 2
Taj-Nar Talar3 Artifact - EquipmentU
Equipped creature gets +1/+1 and veil. (This creature cannot be the target of spells or abilities your opponent's control.)
Equip 2
* Changed: Soldier to Pirate, because my original idea was to make something around the Rishadan pirates in the M.M. block, but that was scrapped early on and I decided to take Aurioks a stab... and obviously I didn't revise it until recently (thanks to whoever mentioned it to my attention. Forgot who, though.)
Auriok SpecialistWW Creature - Human SoldierU
Auriok Specialist can only have one Equipment attached to it.
Equipping Auriok Specialist costs 2 less to equip. "One of the thousands of blades of the Razor Field plains can mirror the thousands of professions to be concieved."
2/2
Specialist's Torque1 Artifact - EquipmentU
Whenever Specialist's Torque becomes equipped to a creature, draw a card. 2: Unequip Specialist's Torque.
Equip 3 Constrict the flow of thought, and let the filtered strength rush forward. ~ Inscription
Specialist's ParryWW InstantU
Target creature gains veil until end of turn. Until end of turn, you may attach target equipment onto that creature without paying it's mana cost. (Creatures with veil cannot be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control.) "One can do so much with a weapon in hand and quick reaction. Rebuke the foe, then act to your own time." ~ Forns*
* Changed because the original intention was to put the equipment onto the same creature, not to a creature not targeted by Veil.
Mirrodin. Plane of Metal. In the Razor Fields where the White mana hums faintly within the metallic landscape, the Auriok resides. People lives there, and they have harvested the metal of the Razor Plains for weaponry and as a tradition. They live by the Leonin, the cat-like humanoid race. Among the Auriok, there was a man named Forns.
Forns was a reknown Auriok champion, as he has used many weapons, his skills has remained unmatched. But one day he decided that he would go out on a pilgramidge to become even stronger than before, and train himself to be a better weaponmaster. Armed with a thin fencing epee, his cloak, and a special "nettle" weapon, he journeys out. Bringing his only student with him, Jus.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Auriok seemed concerned today, as a portal of some sort has opened and has been staying there in a still distance. It does not suck anything in, but there seems to be something inside that the portal wants to have someone to see. The maw of the portal stands in the middle of the fields like an ominous omen.
Forms decided to come and investigate it. But before leaving, the Auriok chief gave him the good luck charm of the village: The Specialist's Torque. It has been said that those wearing this torque on their neck are said to give the wearer an improvement in his or her five senses, stimulate the flow of thought within the mind, and gain a better edge at fighting. Perceptiveness is also enhanced, as the user can concentrate on the movement of the weapon to dodge perfectly. It wasa treasure the Auriok's very rarely would give to their own kind, and this was one of the tools needed for Forns to survive in this quest.
Jethrii, Scornful Duelist1BRR Legendary Creature - Human WarriorR
First Strike
Damage dealt by Jethrii can't be prevented. BR, Sacrifice an artifact: If the sacrificed artifact was an Equipment, Jethrii gains deathtouch until end of turn and deals 3 damage to target creature or player. Otherwise, Jethrii deals 2 damage to target creature or player. Who once fought with the code of battle in his heart, now slays to practice exacting his revenge to his own rival Forns, by any means.
4/2
Art Visual: An Auriok man who looks at you in the picture with a dark look, as if he was about to come and kill you. He wears a thick, tan robe with marks of red and black on it that shrouds most of his body (which is uncommon for an Auriok to have because most of them don't wear that much clothing to begin with.) He wields an axe that seems to be forged by the Razor Plains of Mirrodin, and is dyed a faint red. Behind him you can see what looks like Kuldotha, the Great Furnace.
Bloodbond TabarBR Artifact - EquipmentU
Whenever equipped creature or Bloodbond Tomahawk is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, each player loses 2 life.
Equipped creature gets +3/-1
Equip 3
Art Visual: Pretty much the same axe Jethrii holds.
Jethrii is a person who... wasn't bad at first. But he didn't know how to control himself at times. Until now...
In which he cannot control himself period, due to being trapped in his own vortex of hatred and rage.
Forns, being a warrior who is an adept to sword play, would use his weapon to fight using technique. Forns' philosophy was that in battle, the most skillful stroke would claim victory.
Jethrii... plays a whole different game. He fights dirty and cheap, and resorts to dirty tactics such as throwing even his own weapon at the enemy to try to gain a killing blow.
For Jethrii, his philosophy in battle is that getting the enemy off-guard and resorting to cheap blows is fine, so long as it steers him to victory (in short: Anything goes). If a battle is won, then you would make sure it is won forever against that one person... by killing him.
It was one day that Forns and Jethrii, an old friend of his, decided to do battle. Many times did they fight only led to exhaustion, and ended up in Forns favor every time. Jethrii, jealous and enraged, kept practicing his skills by focusing his jealousy to his blade to deliver a debilitating blow to anyone, especially Forns.
One battle, they fought, but this time they used their real weapons upon Jethrii's request. They fought for 30 minutes straight and Jethrii had then lost yet again. Furious and enraged, he decided to cut the code of honor against all warriors and tried to kill Forns in a cheap shot.
Forns fought back and lived, but was badly injured from the blow. Jethrii was then running away from the village... ever since, he has been living by himself, with only hatred and jealousy on his side, and having a personal bounty on Forn's head. He lived by himself near the Oxidia Chain in Mirrodin, and somehow close to the Great Furnace, too. There he has hunted for survival, and even assassinated unfortunate fighters that happen to accept his duels, presumably the Vulshok that dwell within the area. In fact, some Vulshok have been impressed from his merciless killings that they decided to try to follow Jethrii for various reasons--to join him, or to kill him.
Either way, they all ended up dead.
He then comes back to search for Forns in the news that he was sent to a portal... in hopes he may kill his rival outside of his own home.
Esei, the Namer2BGW
Legendary Creature - Treefolk Shaman (M)
Lands you control but don’t own are 5/6 black, green, and white Treefolk Warriors in addition to their other types.
{2/7}
The Council of Names5BGW
Creature - Treefolk (R)
Fear, Forestwalk, Vigilance.
When The Council of Names is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, put a 2/4 black Treefolk Shaman creature token with fear, a 2/4 green Treefolk Druid creature token with forestwalk, and a 2/4 white Treefolk Warrior with vigilance onto the battlefield.
{6/12}
Otherworldly Awakening2G
Enchantment - Aura (R)
Enchant land
Enchanted land is a Forest in addition to its other types.
4: Until end of turn, enchanted land is a 3/4 Treefolk creature that is the colors the enchanted land could produce and has “This creature gets +1/+1 for each of its colors”.
Willow, Oak, and YewBGW
Instant (U)
Untap each creature you control. Those creatures gain reach and deathtouch until end of turn. A story that lasts seven nights. A lesson that is held for a lifetime.
Long ago in a distant land, I AKU, the shape-shifting master of darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil... wait, that's Samurai Jack. Anyways, starting again.
Long ago, Kamahl encountered a powerful sorceror named Akahar who was bent on reducing Krosa to rot and ash. After a ten-day battle between the sorceror and the planeswalker, Kamahl finally triumphed. He took the sorceror's soul, bound it to a tree, and then planeswalked away with the tree to a random plane.
It's too bad Esei found the forest Kamahl hid Akahar's soul in.
Performing his modified ritual to awaken the tree, he gave the new treefolk a name, but Akahar rejected it. "I am Akahar, foolish shaman! I am not of your kin, and you will get out of my way!" Without waiting for a response, Akahar sent a wave of fire to burn away the Treefolk. Esei was singed but otherwise ready to challenge this ghost.
Akahar, Enemy of Krosa3BRG
(An ebonywood treefolk glares balefully from the card, smoldering crimson eyes peeking out from singed leaf-dreads. Powerful arms taper into hideous thorn-hands.)
Legendary Creature - Treefolk Druid (M) T: Each player sacrifices a land. Akahar, Enemy of Krosa deals damage to target creature or player equal to the number of lands sacrificed this way.
Akahar gets +1/+1 for each land in all graveyards. Imprisoned by Kamahl, freed by Esei, hated by both.
{2/4}
Furious RampageXBRG
(In the center of a smoldering crater, Akahar stands screaming, charred vegetation and burning bodies flying away from it.)
Sorcery (M)
Destroy X target permanents. Anything destroyed this way can’t be regenerated. Five minutes of anger is oft unnoticeable. Five days of rage is oft recorded in the history books.
I opened one last year, got two crap worldwake packs and 8x scathe zombies, which I promptly hid around my sister's apartment for her roommates to find. But, yeah, it was a piece of crap.
Sliver Oligarchy :symw::symu::symb::symr::symg:
Legendary Creature - Sliver (MR)
:2mana:: Target creature becomes a Sliver in addition to its other types until end of turn.
:5mana:: Put a token onto the battlefield that’s a copy of target Sliver creature.
7/7
Adaptive SliverGU
Creature - Sliver (U)
Slivers have "T, Sacrifice this permanent: Exile cards from the top of your library until a Sliver creature card is exiled this way. Put that card onto the battlefield.”
2/2
Soulstitcher Sliver3BB
Creature - Sliver (U)
All Sliver creatures have “Whenever a creature dealt damage by this creature this turn is put into a graveyard, put a 1/1 colorless Sliver creature token onto the battlefield.”
3/3
Glammerweft Sliver1WU
Enchantment Creature - Sliver (R)
Sliver creatures are enchantments in addition to their other types.
Sliver creatures have “3: This creature becomes an enchantment until end of turn.” (It loses all other types.)
2/2
Ah, another rather tricky round for slivers. A legendary creature means five colors, and then five colors means a legendary creature... Well, I'm not entirely happy with my cards, but the deadline's closing in, and something's better than nothing.
Sliver UsurperWUBRG
Legendary Creature - Sliver (MR)
Creatures you control are Slivers in addition to their other creature types.
Creatures your opponents control lose all creature types.
7/7
Evolution SliverWUBRG
Legendary Creature - Sliver (MR)
At the beginning of each player’s upkeep, that player sacrifices a Sliver. If he or she does, that player chooses one — That player gains 7 life; or that player draws seven cards, then discards seven cards; or target creature of that player’s choice gets -7/-7 until end of turn; or Evolution Sliver deals 7 damage to each player; or target creature of that player’s choice gets +7/+7 until end of turn.
7/7
(Yes, that text fits... Barely. If I had room for flavor text, it would be "A final, more ephemeral evolution awaits each and every sliver.")
I opened one last year, got two crap worldwake packs and 8x scathe zombies, which I promptly hid around my sister's apartment for her roommates to find. But, yeah, it was a piece of crap.
You, sir, have just won the internet. Congratulations.
Its a 4 drop 2/2, with the ability that essentially does repeatable escalating Pyroclasm at instant speed for 4GR. Probably a tad on the powerful side, but you have to put a lot of mana into it for it to do that. It may also be too powerful on the fact that you can activate the regen ability more than once, and beef this guy up for really cheap. :|
Your magic may be a little too much as well, since it is predatory urge plus giant growth. :|
Wow. There is alot going on about this card. The sacrifice effect is interesting, and you definitely have to play artifacts with this guy for him to truely be bonkers. Not sure why damage from him cannot be prevented however. :|
Not sure whether you changed the name of your equipment without changing the text, so that's a minus. :|
Who wins?: Well this was harder choice than the other two, but I am going to go with Gerrard's Mom.
Same cost as sliver overlord and sliver queen, but effectively shuts down any and every sliver deck out there. :| Too powerful, I say.
Evolution Sliver is interesting, and with slivers, who don't use magic, I would expect a utility creature. This one is a beater and utility, and.... I don't know. Seems too cluttered.
A treefolk that kills trees. Interesting, and flavorful.
The magic is definitely rare (not sure mythic), except that late game, this is a bomb as you can just destroy all their lands. :| Maybe too powerful for a jund spell. Maybe not. Reminds me of the Jund Ultimatum.
Who wins: Darkfire Games.
Your enemy seems very underwhelming, imo. I see that it is a 1/1 for 3 standard and its p/t never changes. Though, for ever 1 you spend on it, you get an into the roil + half a soul manipulation. Meh. Only good late game.
There is a lot going on in your spell, and I think there is a wording problem with the alternative casting cost. Its a little backwards because you announce targets before you pay for costs.... so I don't think it would work as intended.
That is an interesting enemy, and I can see that being very useful in a UB dredge deck. Definitely a rare.
I'm pretty sure the magic has been seen before somewhere, but i cannot remember where. It's very similar to broken ambitions. But it's not bad.
CARD A Axara, Rogue Drone2RG
Legendary Creature - Insect (R) 3R: Axara, Rogue Drone deals damage equal to its power to each creature. 1G: Regenerate Axara, then put a +1/+1 counter on Axara. Most drones are powerless without the hive. For Axara, his freedom was merely the beginning of his ascent.
{2/2}
SCORES Balance 3/5 (Considering you need six mana for it to survive its own Pyroclasm effect and it's a four drop to a 2/2, this card is an expensive, easily killed time bomb. Regenerate and grow until its as big as you want and then detonate.) Flavor 3/5 (Still have consistent mechanics and flavor text, but no story. Nothing to complain about.) Potential 2/5 (Jimmy likes the growing creature. Spike thinks its too expensive. Johnny thinks that it will be best friends with Doubling Season, but most green growers are.)
CARD B Predatory GorgingRG
Instant (C)
Target creature gets +3/+3 until end of turn. It deals damage equal to its power to target creature. That creature deals damage equal to its power to the first creature. From the smallest insect to the largest baloth, all predators pour their ultimate strength into the moment of the catch.
SCORES Balance 3/5 (Giant Growth plus a retaliatory Soul's Flame for two mana instead of four? The only thing keeping this from being completely broken is the revenge damage that might kill your creature.) Flavor 3/5 (Mechanically its red-green, but flavor wise it doesn't exactly fit with its name. Prey rarely ever damages the predator.) Potential 3/5 (Big creatures will love it. Weenie vs. Weenie will love it. Basically Red Green will love it.)
CARD A Jethrii, Scornful Duelist1BRR
Legendary Creature - Human Warrior (R)
First Strike
Damage dealt by Jethrii can't be prevented. BR, Sacrifice an artifact: If the sacrificed artifact was an Equipment, Jethrii gains deathtouch until end of turn and deals 3 damage to target creature or player. Otherwise, Jethrii deals 2 damage to target creature or player. Who once fought with the code of battle in his heart, now slays to practice exacting his revenge to his own rival Forns, by any means.
{4/2}
SCORES Balance 3/5 (How easy is this card to break? Or, is it over/under priced for what it does? What cards does it compare to?) Flavor 3/5 (Interesting character with a scorched earth policy. Very much doesn't like your original hero.) Potential 3/5 (Who will play with it? Have you obsoleted any card that I can think of or any card that was widely played?)
CARD B Bloodbond TabarBR
Artifact - Equipment (U)
Whenever equipped creature or Bloodbond Tabar is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, each player loses 2 life.
Equipped creature gets +3/-1
Equip 3
SCORES Balance 3/5 (This is your betrayer's weapon of choice. He 'throws' it at an opponent and they take 5 damage and you take 2. Better than Char but harder to cast.) Potential 4/5 (This card has the same problem as Skullclamp. Which means it will be abused to all high hell by Johnny and Spike, but Jimmy won't like it.)
CARD A Witherbranch, Monarch Tree2BBG
Brief critiques again. Since I only have 30 minutes 'till work and I won't be home until "late".
The "Jerk": Built-in Hivestone with a Creature-Eraser. This could have many applications against Tribal decks for the second ability. As for the first ability, I can see some cool combos going on using the Sliver type effect, but for five colors it kind of discourages people to try and utilize it.
The "Means": Incredibly powerful if you can kick in the effects. Sacrificing a Sliver's "shared" ability for a 7-effect would be a fair trade, but a little too powerful if you ask me. The abilities are surprisingly balanced within each other (Looting ability especially). Two gripes about this card: The 7-to-all-players effect would be easy to kill an opponent because more than likely are you going to run Essence Sliver to back yourself up. The other thing is that heaven forbid if you play another Sliver deck, this guy would be likely to die first unless the player wants to use it's ability to the fullest. I won't peg you on this area however because a Sliver vs. Sliver game kind of takes each others resources and uses it against each other.
The "Jerk": This card I like a lot. Ties well with each of the three colors, and the Terravore ability is right for it. The first ability is rather interesting, as it not only powers up your guy, but it takes out lands and possibly a creature. A repeatable ability that generates three effects.
One thing I dislike about this card is that the lands will be in a standstill since you may be sacrificing them every turn, 'lest your opponent(s) do something about it.
The "Means": Very dangerous varient of Lavalanche, and much more powerful than Violent Ultimatum... in the same rarity. Should be "Permanents destroyed this way can't be regenerated." While it does fit for the colors, it won't win any originality points.
Except the flavor text. That was good.
The "Jerk": Well, it's a unique card, I'll give you that. The ability to lower your opponents attack force is always welcome, but it feels underwhelming. The indestructable clause is just qwirky, even though I know you ment for it to stop most creatures from coming at you since they have so little and they have to go against a tough wall such as your guy.
The "Means": A fairly balanced spell, though a little on the powerful side. It basically eliminates all token decks and can really hinder any other deck with big critters, which is always welcome. I would like to see this as a Sorcery though.
The "Jerk": Generic abilities, except it's on a card with fitting colors/costs, something that Wizards themselves have yet to do. (After they fumbled with [CARD]Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran[/CARD]). A very generic card, but it still has it's uses, and it can be a viable Red/Green general for EDH. (Personal note, I know a guy who may want to play this.)
The "Means": Very powerful effect, almost as powerful as Overrun due to the cost of both modes. I would sit well with this being at 3CMC since it avoids being Isochron Scepter'ed and that it would make it a lot more balanced. Nice way to putting a new twist to Reckless Assault.
The "Jerk": Very potential EDH general, as it can be conserved later on to turn the tide of the game some. Fairly balanced card, possibly playable even outside EDH since for four mana you bounce a guy, get a thing, and earn a chump blocker. Multiple copies of him would become tiresome and downright annoying, since you can use the effects over and over if you have three or more in possession.
The "Means": I know you are trying to tie the effect to the name, and you did an amazing job on that. But I don't recall Blue/Black getting the ability to exile any creature on the battlefield. The "counter" ability by itself would come out just fine, if combined with your second ability.
The "Jerk": Very interesting effect on how you exile creatures under the Doppleganger and use it against the player. Potential EDH general, and is properly balanced.
The "Means": I like how it ties with your legend, but the effect is a bit underwhelming and requires a lot of mana for it to come to effect. It is balanced since it does have the milling effect along with it...
Woke up quick, at about noon, just thought that I had to judge right soon,
gotta pick up where we left off, gotta see who's cardsa up to snuff.
Gerrard vs IK
Gerrard's Mom
First off, way to go on the art description. I know its not your standard thing The foe is super cool, with the ability to pyroclasm for 4, and then regen and become bigger for 2 more. Once rolling this guy is hard to stop. I think the trick is a little tooooo powerful as a common, and would have put it as an uncommon, but the idea is sweet.
ImpulsiveKnowledge
Okay, I was under the impression it should have been white and either black or red (or both) but include your guild colors.... That said, I see how it ties in, but seems super specific. Could be good otherwise. I love the equipment.
Winner: Gerrard's Mom
Blue vs Darkfire
BlueLotus
Okay, I know slivers are anti effect, but I think... it would be totally okay to expand some idea, like possibly even a "cycle" of powerful legendary creatures that are mono color. Or even a tribal spell. Could be good. This is super cumbersome as is. Good try though.
Darkfire Games
I love the Legendary critter, very cool, very annoying but seems fair. The destruction force is super scary, I'm afraid. I appriciate that you added art descriptions with your vothos story, super awesome. However I would have liked to see what you could do with limited rarity.
Winner: Darkfire Games
DoC vs Krey
DeusofCalamity
Where are your previous cards?
Your Monarch Tree isn't legendary...
And I would boost the cost of each of these spells by 1 to be comparable to other cards or at least balanced a bit more and even reduce the tree to a 2/5 as it has a high chance of becoming indestructible.
Krey
The warchief's ability doesn't work as its a static ability that looks like a triggered ability. Maybe "When ~ attacks, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each other attacking creature."
Love the Warriors Fury
The Betrayer - Very flavorful creature. The cost of the red ability seems a bit high taking into account that you have to regenerate it in order for it to survive. The +1/+1 counter is a nice touch for the green ability. Flavor text is very nice.
The Spell - Nice way to mix a Giant Growth with Arena Very nice flavor text. For so powerful effect at such a low cost, this would have been better at uncommon.
vs.
The Betrayer - Interesting betrayer, the sac artifact ability is very nice. The deathtouch is very limited because of it only activating on equipments. The damage can't be prevented is very powerful on this creature. Flavor text is nice.
The Artifact - Don't see why both players lose life. The power boost is ok but paying mana to lose life yourself, and the -1 toughness does not help much. A little higher cost and a lower (or colored) equip cost would have helped this better. flavor text would have been nice here.
Gerrard's Mom, with a very close Impulsive Knowledge
The Betrayer - Interesting abilities. What better foil to slivers than making them not-slivers. Cost and p/t is generic for sliver legends. Flavor text would have help define the flavor for the creature.
The (other?) Betrayer - Interesting to think that you have only made creatures for all rounds. Again cost and p/t is generic for sliver legends. The rarity fits this wordy creature. Good to limit when the ability could be used.
vs.
The Betrayer - Very nice effect, this would be awesome in multiplayer. The p/t boost is very nice and could build up quickly. Flavor text is nice. The Spell - Interesting effect. The mana intensity of this spell is in dire constrast with Akahar's ability. 1BRG to destroy one permanent seems very costly and not in the mythic range.
Darkfire Games, with BlueLotus close behind]
The Betrayer - Feels like a spell that gives you a 1/1 creature as it resolves. The ability is very interesting as it mixes both color's effects very well. Flavor text is very nice.
The Spell - The ability feels very white, even when the counter does feels blue. Black is more of like destroy, not vanish creatures into the unknown. The alternate cost looks as if it is not worth it since the spell cost only two mana. with the flexibility of the card if you cannot exile the spell you coud wait for a more opportune time. Very nice flavor text.
vs.
The Betrayer - Interesting but complicated creature. The black ability seems to work only with it on the graveyard and only if it has a creature under it. Guess the blue ability should only work if a copy of this was already in the graveyard over a creature. Flavor text would have helped define this creature better.
The Spell - For only one black mana in the ability it should have a limited destroy clause, like non-black creatures. The effect is very costly even when the discard ability is very nice on this card. Flavor text would have helped the card's flavor.
I'm not sure why you didn't try a Sliver tribal card, or a legend who is not multicolored. There's only so much room for cool five color Slivers, and I don't think either of these really pulled it off. The Evolution Sliver at least has the neat 7 theme to it, but putting the Abyss on yourself kind of sucks. A Hivestone man still doesn't make it worth running non-Slivers in a Sliver deck, as far as I can tell.
I like the multiplayer scaling aspect of the legend, although people would probably hate playing against him. The spell is nuts though, it's already better than Violent Ultimatum in many ways and can scale even larger. Also, it should say "Those permanents" or something other than "Anything."
This was the least exciting set, in my opinion, but the interesting activated ability on Darkfire Games' legend makes him the winner here.
The tension between needing creatures to remove indestructibility and being able to kill creatures is cool on the legend. The spell doesn't need to be green, and seems underpriced.
You don't need to say "until end of turn" on your guy, it doesn't make any sense on a static ability. That said, it certainly makes sense in those colors, and hasn't really been done except for Veteran's Armaments. The spell is a little too obvious for that guy, and I think the basic mode is underpriced. Also, your wording is not right on getting another combat step, see Relentless Assault. DeusofCalamity wins this one, his legend was the only card of these four that stood out in my mind.
I think the wording is a little sketchy on Never Born, but the idea on the alternate cost is interesting. I don't know if you have to counter and then exile it ala Dissipate? Distorting Wake and Death Denied on a dude seems pretty good, makes sense for the colors too (Soulquake).
ohmusama's cards also work together pretty well. The kill spell with milling is not terribly interesting, but the shapeshifter is pretty good. It's cool that it can store identities and alternate between them.
Both of you were working in fairly well trodden blue/black space this round. Both would make good EDH legends and spells. Everything was well supported with flavor. It's pretty close, but I'll give this one to ohmusama, for the excellent connection of blue and black on the legend.
I opened one last year, got two crap worldwake packs and 8x scathe zombies, which I promptly hid around my sister's apartment for her roommates to find. But, yeah, it was a piece of crap.
You, sir, have just won the internet. Congratulations.
Axara, Rogue Drone :2mana::symr::symg:
(A large six-limbed red ant bursts out of a cocoon in a field of fire.)
Legendary Creature - Insect (R)
:3mana::symr:: Axara, Rogue Drone deals damage equal to its power to each creature.
:1mana::symg:: Regenerate Axara, then put a +1/+1 counter on Axara. Most drones are powerless without the hive. For Axara, his freedom was merely the beginning of his ascent.
2/2
Like your last card, I would have liked to see a "if ~ regenerates this way." Other than that, there's nothing wrong with it. Predatory Gorging :symr::symg:
(A gigantic beetle explodes out of a bush, pinning down a lizard.)
Instant (C)
Target creature gets +3/+3 until end of turn. It deals damage equal to its power to target creature. That creature deals damage equal to its power to the first creature.
From the smallest insect to the largest baloth, all predators pour their ultimate strength into the moment of the catch.
Probably undercosted, but again, there's nothing else wrong with it.
Jethrii, Scornful Duelist :1mana::symb::symr::symr: Legendary Creature - Human WarriorR
First Strike
Damage dealt by Jethrii can't be prevented.
:symb::symr:, Sacrifice an artifact: If the sacrificed artifact was an Equipment, Jethrii gains deathtouch until end of turn and deals 3 damage to target creature or player. Otherwise, Jethrii deals 2 damage to target creature or player. Who once fought with the code of battle in his heart, now slays to practice exacting his revenge to his own rival Forns, by any means.
4/2
It seems like too much text for too little payoff. Also, I find it somewhat strange that Jethrii can actually defeat Forns based on their cards. Bloodbond Tabar :symb::symr: Artifact - EquipmentU
Whenever equipped creature or Bloodbond Tomahawk is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, each player loses 2 life.
Equipped creature gets +3/-1
Equip
It's fine, if not terribly interesting.
Gerrard's Mom
Witherbranch, Monarch Tree :2mana::symg::symb::symb:
Creature - Treefolk Wizard Advisor {R}
~ is indestructible as long as any opponent controls 3 or less creatures.
:1mana::symb::symb:, : Creatures target opponent controls gets -1/-1 until end of turn.
3/7
The mechanics are fine, but why exactly does he become indestructible? I get that it opposes the Selesnya idea of having more creatures yourself, but I'm still lost on the flavor. Also, you forgot to make it legendary (but I know you meant to.) Withered Roots :1mana::symg::symb::symb:
Instant {U}
Put two -1/-1 counters on all creatures target player controls.
"For trees, roots are their lifeline. If you mess that up, soon that creature will die. So if that tree does not obey me, I will make sure that happens." - Witherbranch, Monarch Tree
I do not feel that this is green, at all. I know that green gets wither and poison effects, but those are from creatures. This is an instant speed Marsh Casualties that uses counters. Plus it's undercosted for an instant board wipe.
Rufai, Centaur Warchief :symr::symr::symg::symg:
Legendary Creature - Centaur Warrior (R)
Haste, Trample
Rufai, Centaur Warchief gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each other attacking creature you control.
3/3
"The only way to insure our peace is to is to destroy our enemies before they had a chance to attack us" - Rufai, Centaur Warchief
It's fine, if not too terribly interesting. Warrior's Fury :symr::symg:
Instant (R)
Kicker :symr::symg: (You may pay an additional :symr::symg: as you cast this spell.)
Attacking creatures you control get +2/+2 until end of turn.
If Warrior's Fury was kicked, untap all creatures that attacked this turn. There is an additional combat phase.
"Stand down Ralov. My army shall conquer this new plane and use its resources to destroy our enemies." - Rufai, Centaur Warchief
I would have preferred to see this as a green card with a red kicker. As-is, I'm not completely sure where green fits in in gaining an extra attack step. That said, I do like the pump+extra combat phase idea.
Krey
Theris, The Echo of Loss :xmana::1mana::symb::symu:
Legendary Creature - Spirit Wizard (R)
When Theris enters the battlefield, return X target non-land permanents to their owner's hands and return X target cards from your graveyard to your hand.
1/1
"Destroyed years ago by his own ambition, the rifts have given my most dangerous student a chance to return things to how they once were."
- Teferi
Feels more like a spell, and a rather broken one at that. At four mana, it returns a card each turn. At five mana and up, it sets the opponent back as well. Never Born :symu::symb:
Instant (R)
Choose one - Exile target creature spell you don't control; or exile target creature you don't control.
Instead of paying Never Born's mana cost, if you control a swamp or an island you may allow that creature or spell's controller to untap lands equal to that creature or spell's converted mana cost and draw a card.
"The mightiest oak began as a seed that could be crushed."
-Theris, The Echo of Loss
Again, this feels too good. Since it's an instant, the untapped lands probably won't matter, and that leaves a spell with a free mana cost that destroys creatures. Simply, it generates crushing amounts of tempo.
Doppelganger Andarius :1mana::symu::symb::symb:
Legendary Creature - Shapeshifter {R}
:1mana::symb:: Exile a creature card from a graveyard under Doppelganger Andarius.
:1mana::symu:: Doppelganger Andarius becomes a copy of a creature card exiled by it until end of turn.
2/2
It feels a little too close to Dimir Doppelganger for comfort, and the wording "Exile [...] under" feels archaic, and the whole ability could probably just end right before under. Sorrowful Demise :xmana::symu::symb:
Instant {U}
Destroy target creature with converted mana cost X or less. It can't be regenerated. Then that creature's controller puts the top X cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.
I like cards like this. In fact, this is my favorite card of this round.
I opened one last year, got two crap worldwake packs and 8x scathe zombies, which I promptly hid around my sister's apartment for her roommates to find. But, yeah, it was a piece of crap.
You, sir, have just won the internet. Congratulations.
The only criticism I have is that given the flavor, deathtouch and first strike should be reversed. Throwing the artifact lets him strike before his opponent gets close, right? He's always deadly.
Actually, that does make a whole lot of sense, good call. Though I wanted to focus more on the mechanics of the card then the flavor, since your equipments basically turn into something like Dark Temper.
Quote from Krey »
Re: Bloodbond Tabar. Don't see why both players lose life.
Spiteflame Witch was pretty much the inspiration behind it. That and I was afraid to make it so the only the opponent would lose 2 life, making to fall into a higher power level.
Honestly, I liked Gerrard's cards a lot. Though it's been said by everyone else: The Predatory Gouging is undercosted. That's my only complaint. But anyway, good show GM! Good luck on the semi-finals (and perhaps the finals.)
Just waiting on the judgings from Ohmusama and then we are all set for the next round!
@ Impulsive: I understand that the ability itself is in the right colors. However, I am not sure why your enemy is so special as to have that ability on him. That's all. I mean, that one clause allows him to get past protection.... beef him to 10 power and you can take down the Progenitus that just blocked him..... :|
Take a mechanic from the pre-mirrodin era, and a mechanic after the mirrodin era, and create a card that flavorfully melds both mechanics.
Well hello hello hello! It's that magical time of the year, butterflies and dragons flying, flowers blooming, and new magical phenomena erupting everywhere. Ahhh, truly a wonderful time of the year!
The grading of 3 points for first place, 2 points for second and 1 for third still stands. This is also the case for up to 2 points for crits and Top3.
Total points of player A in round N = 100 * X/Y
Where:
X = Total number of points given by judges + Bonus points for critiques/Top3
Y = Total number of points possible (3*Number of judges + Bonus Points)
This way the grading is more streamlined in the fact that all rounds up to going to top 8 are graded equally, and there is no handicap for any team that has fewer judges.
Each player starts the next round with the score that he previously had, and another possible 100 points is given to him at the end of that round. Therefore, there is a possible 300 points before the CCL goes to top 8.
You receive one point for submitting a top 3 on time, and one additional point if you critique all of the cards you judged.
Ah, you are finally about to enter the portal. However, within your guild there is someone who is not pleased about this. Very displeased...
Challenge:Create a legendary creature in your guild who will try to kill you (Read the spoiler below). Additionally, using the same colors, create the spell that he/she/it will attempt to kill you with.
It must be multicolored, and one of the colors must either be red or black. If one of those colors is in your guild, please choose the other. However, you are allowed to choose not to use one of your guild's colors if you wish, as at this point it is clear that your enemy is no longer a true member of the guild.
Summary:
1. 2-3 colors
2. Is either red or black (possibly both)
3. Legendary
4. Must not already exist in Magic (Come on, this one's a gimmie ;))
So, join the summer frolic and fun and may the best spellslinger win! (Also, this is a flavorful month, feel free to include backstory wherever you want.)
Submissions will be due when July 22nd becomes July 23rd. Critiques will be due 12:00, July 24th EST. In a critique, you critique each other match.
"For trees, roots are their lifeline. If you mess that up, soon that creature will die. So if that tree does not obey me, I will make sure that happens." - Witherbranch, Monarch Tree
Witherbranch was one of the higher members of the Conclave at it's height, and leading adviser to the Chorus. However, he was consumed by the dark nature of his kind, and staged an uprising within the conclave to have it become more of a monarchal society rather than the socialist society that is the Selesnya Conclave. With the aid of Tolsimir, The Conclave drove Witherbranch out of Ravnica, and he has been hiding in Shadowmoor since then. Upon hearing of the portal to the new world, he found his opportunity to start a new Selesnya Monarchy, and so he then returned to Ravnica undetected to stop the Conclave from getting their hands on what he believed was his rightful property... and he brought along some of the shadowmoor magic with him. And that is where our story is now.
Take a mechanic from the pre-mirrodin era, and a mechanic after the mirrodin era, and create a card that flavorfully melds both mechanics.
I'm sorry for your troubles. If you had critiqued, you would have made it! So don't waste that talent! Return next month to win!
Also, @ Contestants: Is the challenge to narrow? I thought the black/red would be interesting flavor-wise, but if it hurts your creativity please let me know.
Equip 2
* Changed: Soldier to Pirate, because my original idea was to make something around the Rishadan pirates in the M.M. block, but that was scrapped early on and I decided to take Aurioks a stab... and obviously I didn't revise it until recently (thanks to whoever mentioned it to my attention. Forgot who, though.)
Creature - Human Soldier U
"One can do so much with a weapon in hand and quick reaction. Rebuke the foe, then act to your own time." ~ Forns*
* Changed because the original intention was to put the equipment onto the same creature, not to a creature not targeted by Veil.
Mirrodin. Plane of Metal. In the Razor Fields where the White mana hums faintly within the metallic landscape, the Auriok resides. People lives there, and they have harvested the metal of the Razor Plains for weaponry and as a tradition. They live by the Leonin, the cat-like humanoid race. Among the Auriok, there was a man named Forns.
Forns was a reknown Auriok champion, as he has used many weapons, his skills has remained unmatched. But one day he decided that he would go out on a pilgramidge to become even stronger than before, and train himself to be a better weaponmaster. Armed with a thin fencing epee, his cloak, and a special "nettle" weapon, he journeys out. Bringing his only student with him, Jus.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Auriok seemed concerned today, as a portal of some sort has opened and has been staying there in a still distance. It does not suck anything in, but there seems to be something inside that the portal wants to have someone to see. The maw of the portal stands in the middle of the fields like an ominous omen.
Forms decided to come and investigate it. But before leaving, the Auriok chief gave him the good luck charm of the village: The Specialist's Torque. It has been said that those wearing this torque on their neck are said to give the wearer an improvement in his or her five senses, stimulate the flow of thought within the mind, and gain a better edge at fighting. Perceptiveness is also enhanced, as the user can concentrate on the movement of the weapon to dodge perfectly. It wasa treasure the Auriok's very rarely would give to their own kind, and this was one of the tools needed for Forns to survive in this quest.
Jethrii, Scornful Duelist 1BRR
Legendary Creature - Human Warrior R
First Strike
Damage dealt by Jethrii can't be prevented.
BR, Sacrifice an artifact: If the sacrificed artifact was an Equipment, Jethrii gains deathtouch until end of turn and deals 3 damage to target creature or player. Otherwise, Jethrii deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
Who once fought with the code of battle in his heart, now slays to practice exacting his revenge to his own rival Forns, by any means.
4/2
Art Visual: An Auriok man who looks at you in the picture with a dark look, as if he was about to come and kill you. He wears a thick, tan robe with marks of red and black on it that shrouds most of his body (which is uncommon for an Auriok to have because most of them don't wear that much clothing to begin with.) He wields an axe that seems to be forged by the Razor Plains of Mirrodin, and is dyed a faint red. Behind him you can see what looks like Kuldotha, the Great Furnace.
Bloodbond Tabar BR
Artifact - Equipment U
Whenever equipped creature or Bloodbond Tomahawk is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, each player loses 2 life.
Equipped creature gets +3/-1
Equip 3
Art Visual: Pretty much the same axe Jethrii holds.
Jethrii is a person who... wasn't bad at first. But he didn't know how to control himself at times. Until now...
In which he cannot control himself period, due to being trapped in his own vortex of hatred and rage.
Forns, being a warrior who is an adept to sword play, would use his weapon to fight using technique. Forns' philosophy was that in battle, the most skillful stroke would claim victory.
Jethrii... plays a whole different game. He fights dirty and cheap, and resorts to dirty tactics such as throwing even his own weapon at the enemy to try to gain a killing blow.
For Jethrii, his philosophy in battle is that getting the enemy off-guard and resorting to cheap blows is fine, so long as it steers him to victory (in short: Anything goes). If a battle is won, then you would make sure it is won forever against that one person... by killing him.
It was one day that Forns and Jethrii, an old friend of his, decided to do battle. Many times did they fight only led to exhaustion, and ended up in Forns favor every time. Jethrii, jealous and enraged, kept practicing his skills by focusing his jealousy to his blade to deliver a debilitating blow to anyone, especially Forns.
One battle, they fought, but this time they used their real weapons upon Jethrii's request. They fought for 30 minutes straight and Jethrii had then lost yet again. Furious and enraged, he decided to cut the code of honor against all warriors and tried to kill Forns in a cheap shot.
Forns fought back and lived, but was badly injured from the blow. Jethrii was then running away from the village... ever since, he has been living by himself, with only hatred and jealousy on his side, and having a personal bounty on Forn's head. He lived by himself near the Oxidia Chain in Mirrodin, and somehow close to the Great Furnace, too. There he has hunted for survival, and even assassinated unfortunate fighters that happen to accept his duels, presumably the Vulshok that dwell within the area. In fact, some Vulshok have been impressed from his merciless killings that they decided to try to follow Jethrii for various reasons--to join him, or to kill him.
Either way, they all ended up dead.
He then comes back to search for Forns in the news that he was sent to a portal... in hopes he may kill his rival outside of his own home.

A story that lasts seven nights. A lesson that is held for a lifetime.
Long ago in a distant land, I AKU, the shape-shifting master of darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil... wait, that's Samurai Jack. Anyways, starting again.
Long ago, Kamahl encountered a powerful sorceror named Akahar who was bent on reducing Krosa to rot and ash. After a ten-day battle between the sorceror and the planeswalker, Kamahl finally triumphed. He took the sorceror's soul, bound it to a tree, and then planeswalked away with the tree to a random plane.
It's too bad Esei found the forest Kamahl hid Akahar's soul in.
Performing his modified ritual to awaken the tree, he gave the new treefolk a name, but Akahar rejected it. "I am Akahar, foolish shaman! I am not of your kin, and you will get out of my way!" Without waiting for a response, Akahar sent a wave of fire to burn away the Treefolk. Esei was singed but otherwise ready to challenge this ghost.

Ah, another rather tricky round for slivers. A legendary creature means five colors, and then five colors means a legendary creature... Well, I'm not entirely happy with my cards, but the deadline's closing in, and something's better than nothing.

Your magic may be a little too much as well, since it is predatory urge plus giant growth. :|
Not sure whether you changed the name of your equipment without changing the text, so that's a minus. :|
Evolution Sliver is interesting, and with slivers, who don't use magic, I would expect a utility creature. This one is a beater and utility, and.... I don't know. Seems too cluttered.
The magic is definitely rare (not sure mythic), except that late game, this is a bomb as you can just destroy all their lands. :| Maybe too powerful for a jund spell. Maybe not. Reminds me of the Jund Ultimatum.
Your enemy seems very underwhelming, imo. I see that it is a 1/1 for 3 standard and its p/t never changes. Though, for ever 1 you spend on it, you get an into the roil + half a soul manipulation. Meh. Only good late game.
There is a lot going on in your spell, and I think there is a wording problem with the alternative casting cost. Its a little backwards because you announce targets before you pay for costs.... so I don't think it would work as intended.
I'm pretty sure the magic has been seen before somewhere, but i cannot remember where. It's very similar to broken ambitions. But it's not bad.
Take a mechanic from the pre-mirrodin era, and a mechanic after the mirrodin era, and create a card that flavorfully melds both mechanics.

The "Jerk": Built-in Hivestone with a Creature-Eraser. This could have many applications against Tribal decks for the second ability. As for the first ability, I can see some cool combos going on using the Sliver type effect, but for five colors it kind of discourages people to try and utilize it.
The "Means": Incredibly powerful if you can kick in the effects. Sacrificing a Sliver's "shared" ability for a 7-effect would be a fair trade, but a little too powerful if you ask me. The abilities are surprisingly balanced within each other (Looting ability especially). Two gripes about this card: The 7-to-all-players effect would be easy to kill an opponent because more than likely are you going to run Essence Sliver to back yourself up. The other thing is that heaven forbid if you play another Sliver deck, this guy would be likely to die first unless the player wants to use it's ability to the fullest. I won't peg you on this area however because a Sliver vs. Sliver game kind of takes each others resources and uses it against each other.
The "Jerk": This card I like a lot. Ties well with each of the three colors, and the Terravore ability is right for it. The first ability is rather interesting, as it not only powers up your guy, but it takes out lands and possibly a creature. A repeatable ability that generates three effects.
One thing I dislike about this card is that the lands will be in a standstill since you may be sacrificing them every turn, 'lest your opponent(s) do something about it.
The "Means": Very dangerous varient of Lavalanche, and much more powerful than Violent Ultimatum... in the same rarity. Should be "Permanents destroyed this way can't be regenerated." While it does fit for the colors, it won't win any originality points.
Except the flavor text. That was good.
The "Jerk": Well, it's a unique card, I'll give you that. The ability to lower your opponents attack force is always welcome, but it feels underwhelming. The indestructable clause is just qwirky, even though I know you ment for it to stop most creatures from coming at you since they have so little and they have to go against a tough wall such as your guy.
The "Means": A fairly balanced spell, though a little on the powerful side. It basically eliminates all token decks and can really hinder any other deck with big critters, which is always welcome. I would like to see this as a Sorcery though.
The "Jerk": Generic abilities, except it's on a card with fitting colors/costs, something that Wizards themselves have yet to do. (After they fumbled with [CARD]Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran[/CARD]). A very generic card, but it still has it's uses, and it can be a viable Red/Green general for EDH. (Personal note, I know a guy who may want to play this.)
The "Means": Very powerful effect, almost as powerful as Overrun due to the cost of both modes. I would sit well with this being at 3CMC since it avoids being Isochron Scepter'ed and that it would make it a lot more balanced. Nice way to putting a new twist to Reckless Assault.
The "Jerk": Very potential EDH general, as it can be conserved later on to turn the tide of the game some. Fairly balanced card, possibly playable even outside EDH since for four mana you bounce a guy, get a thing, and earn a chump blocker. Multiple copies of him would become tiresome and downright annoying, since you can use the effects over and over if you have three or more in possession.
The "Means": I know you are trying to tie the effect to the name, and you did an amazing job on that. But I don't recall Blue/Black getting the ability to exile any creature on the battlefield. The "counter" ability by itself would come out just fine, if combined with your second ability.
The "Jerk": Very interesting effect on how you exile creatures under the Doppleganger and use it against the player. Potential EDH general, and is properly balanced.
The "Means": I like how it ties with your legend, but the effect is a bit underwhelming and requires a lot of mana for it to come to effect. It is balanced since it does have the milling effect along with it...
Darkfire Games
Krey
and Ohmusama
Advance.
gotta pick up where we left off, gotta see who's cardsa up to snuff.
Gerrard vs IK
Gerrard's Mom
First off, way to go on the art description. I know its not your standard thing The foe is super cool, with the ability to pyroclasm for 4, and then regen and become bigger for 2 more. Once rolling this guy is hard to stop. I think the trick is a little tooooo powerful as a common, and would have put it as an uncommon, but the idea is sweet.
ImpulsiveKnowledge
Okay, I was under the impression it should have been white and either black or red (or both) but include your guild colors.... That said, I see how it ties in, but seems super specific. Could be good otherwise. I love the equipment.
Winner: Gerrard's Mom
Blue vs Darkfire
BlueLotus
Okay, I know slivers are anti effect, but I think... it would be totally okay to expand some idea, like possibly even a "cycle" of powerful legendary creatures that are mono color. Or even a tribal spell. Could be good. This is super cumbersome as is. Good try though.
Darkfire Games
I love the Legendary critter, very cool, very annoying but seems fair. The destruction force is super scary, I'm afraid. I appriciate that you added art descriptions with your vothos story, super awesome. However I would have liked to see what you could do with limited rarity.
Winner: Darkfire Games
DoC vs Krey
DeusofCalamity
Where are your previous cards?
Your Monarch Tree isn't legendary...
And I would boost the cost of each of these spells by 1 to be comparable to other cards or at least balanced a bit more and even reduce the tree to a 2/5 as it has a high chance of becoming indestructible.
Krey
The warchief's ability doesn't work as its a static ability that looks like a triggered ability. Maybe "When ~ attacks, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each other attacking creature."
Love the Warriors Fury
Winner: Krey
The Betrayer - Very flavorful creature. The cost of the red ability seems a bit high taking into account that you have to regenerate it in order for it to survive. The +1/+1 counter is a nice touch for the green ability. Flavor text is very nice.
The Spell - Nice way to mix a Giant Growth with Arena Very nice flavor text. For so powerful effect at such a low cost, this would have been better at uncommon.
The Betrayer - Interesting betrayer, the sac artifact ability is very nice. The deathtouch is very limited because of it only activating on equipments. The damage can't be prevented is very powerful on this creature. Flavor text is nice.
The Artifact - Don't see why both players lose life. The power boost is ok but paying mana to lose life yourself, and the -1 toughness does not help much. A little higher cost and a lower (or colored) equip cost would have helped this better. flavor text would have been nice here.
Gerrard's Mom, with a very close Impulsive Knowledge
The Betrayer - Interesting abilities. What better foil to slivers than making them not-slivers. Cost and p/t is generic for sliver legends. Flavor text would have help define the flavor for the creature.
The (other?) Betrayer - Interesting to think that you have only made creatures for all rounds. Again cost and p/t is generic for sliver legends. The rarity fits this wordy creature. Good to limit when the ability could be used.
The Betrayer - Very nice effect, this would be awesome in multiplayer. The p/t boost is very nice and could build up quickly. Flavor text is nice.
The Spell - Interesting effect. The mana intensity of this spell is in dire constrast with Akahar's ability. 1BRG to destroy one permanent seems very costly and not in the mythic range.
Darkfire Games, with BlueLotus close behind]
The Betrayer - Feels like a spell that gives you a 1/1 creature as it resolves. The ability is very interesting as it mixes both color's effects very well. Flavor text is very nice.
The Spell - The ability feels very white, even when the counter does feels blue. Black is more of like destroy, not vanish creatures into the unknown. The alternate cost looks as if it is not worth it since the spell cost only two mana. with the flexibility of the card if you cannot exile the spell you coud wait for a more opportune time. Very nice flavor text.
The Betrayer - Interesting but complicated creature. The black ability seems to work only with it on the graveyard and only if it has a creature under it. Guess the blue ability should only work if a copy of this was already in the graveyard over a creature. Flavor text would have helped define this creature better.
The Spell - For only one black mana in the ability it should have a limited destroy clause, like non-black creatures. The effect is very costly even when the discard ability is very nice on this card. Flavor text would have helped the card's flavor.
Whispered Thunder, in a very close match.
I like the multiplayer scaling aspect of the legend, although people would probably hate playing against him. The spell is nuts though, it's already better than Violent Ultimatum in many ways and can scale even larger. Also, it should say "Those permanents" or something other than "Anything."
This was the least exciting set, in my opinion, but the interesting activated ability on Darkfire Games' legend makes him the winner here.
You don't need to say "until end of turn" on your guy, it doesn't make any sense on a static ability. That said, it certainly makes sense in those colors, and hasn't really been done except for Veteran's Armaments. The spell is a little too obvious for that guy, and I think the basic mode is underpriced. Also, your wording is not right on getting another combat step, see Relentless Assault.
DeusofCalamity wins this one, his legend was the only card of these four that stood out in my mind.
ohmusama's cards also work together pretty well. The kill spell with milling is not terribly interesting, but the shapeshifter is pretty good. It's cool that it can store identities and alternate between them.
Both of you were working in fairly well trodden blue/black space this round. Both would make good EDH legends and spells. Everything was well supported with flavor. It's pretty close, but I'll give this one to ohmusama, for the excellent connection of blue and black on the legend.
Take a mechanic from the pre-mirrodin era, and a mechanic after the mirrodin era, and create a card that flavorfully melds both mechanics.
Both of these are absolutely fine... As long as you remember... MUAHAHAHAHA!
No, really, do remember.

Axara, Rogue Drone :2mana::symr::symg:
(A large six-limbed red ant bursts out of a cocoon in a field of fire.)
Legendary Creature - Insect (R)
:3mana::symr:: Axara, Rogue Drone deals damage equal to its power to each creature.
:1mana::symg:: Regenerate Axara, then put a +1/+1 counter on Axara.
Most drones are powerless without the hive. For Axara, his freedom was merely the beginning of his ascent.
2/2
Like your last card, I would have liked to see a "if ~ regenerates this way." Other than that, there's nothing wrong with it.
Predatory Gorging :symr::symg:
Probably undercosted, but again, there's nothing else wrong with it.
Jethrii, Scornful Duelist :1mana::symb::symr::symr:
Legendary Creature - Human Warrior R
First Strike
Damage dealt by Jethrii can't be prevented.
:symb::symr:, Sacrifice an artifact: If the sacrificed artifact was an Equipment, Jethrii gains deathtouch until end of turn and deals 3 damage to target creature or player. Otherwise, Jethrii deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
Who once fought with the code of battle in his heart, now slays to practice exacting his revenge to his own rival Forns, by any means.
4/2
It seems like too much text for too little payoff. Also, I find it somewhat strange that Jethrii can actually defeat Forns based on their cards.
Bloodbond Tabar :symb::symr:
Artifact - Equipment U
Whenever equipped creature or Bloodbond Tomahawk is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, each player loses 2 life.
Equipped creature gets +3/-1
Equip
It's fine, if not terribly interesting.
Gerrard's Mom
Witherbranch, Monarch Tree :2mana::symg::symb::symb:
Creature - Treefolk Wizard Advisor {R}
~ is indestructible as long as any opponent controls 3 or less creatures.
:1mana::symb::symb:, : Creatures target opponent controls gets -1/-1 until end of turn.
3/7
The mechanics are fine, but why exactly does he become indestructible? I get that it opposes the Selesnya idea of having more creatures yourself, but I'm still lost on the flavor. Also, you forgot to make it legendary (but I know you meant to.)
Withered Roots :1mana::symg::symb::symb:
Instant {U}
Put two -1/-1 counters on all creatures target player controls.
"For trees, roots are their lifeline. If you mess that up, soon that creature will die. So if that tree does not obey me, I will make sure that happens." - Witherbranch, Monarch Tree
I do not feel that this is green, at all. I know that green gets wither and poison effects, but those are from creatures. This is an instant speed Marsh Casualties that uses counters. Plus it's undercosted for an instant board wipe.
Rufai, Centaur Warchief :symr::symr::symg::symg:
Legendary Creature - Centaur Warrior (R)
Haste, Trample
Rufai, Centaur Warchief gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each other attacking creature you control.
3/3
"The only way to insure our peace is to is to destroy our enemies before they had a chance to attack us" - Rufai, Centaur Warchief
It's fine, if not too terribly interesting.
Warrior's Fury :symr::symg:
Instant (R)
Kicker :symr::symg: (You may pay an additional :symr::symg: as you cast this spell.)
I would have preferred to see this as a green card with a red kicker. As-is, I'm not completely sure where green fits in in gaining an extra attack step. That said, I do like the pump+extra combat phase idea.
Krey
Theris, The Echo of Loss :xmana::1mana::symb::symu:
Legendary Creature - Spirit Wizard (R)
When Theris enters the battlefield, return X target non-land permanents to their owner's hands and return X target cards from your graveyard to your hand.
1/1
"Destroyed years ago by his own ambition, the rifts have given my most dangerous student a chance to return things to how they once were."
- Teferi
Feels more like a spell, and a rather broken one at that. At four mana, it returns a card each turn. At five mana and up, it sets the opponent back as well.
Never Born :symu::symb:
Instant (R)
Choose one - Exile target creature spell you don't control; or exile target creature you don't control.
Instead of paying Never Born's mana cost, if you control a swamp or an island you may allow that creature or spell's controller to untap lands equal to that creature or spell's converted mana cost and draw a card.
"The mightiest oak began as a seed that could be crushed."
-Theris, The Echo of Loss
Again, this feels too good. Since it's an instant, the untapped lands probably won't matter, and that leaves a spell with a free mana cost that destroys creatures. Simply, it generates crushing amounts of tempo.
Doppelganger Andarius :1mana::symu::symb::symb:
Legendary Creature - Shapeshifter {R}
:1mana::symb:: Exile a creature card from a graveyard under Doppelganger Andarius.
:1mana::symu:: Doppelganger Andarius becomes a copy of a creature card exiled by it until end of turn.
2/2
It feels a little too close to Dimir Doppelganger for comfort, and the wording "Exile [...] under" feels archaic, and the whole ability could probably just end right before under.
Sorrowful Demise :xmana::symu::symb:
Instant {U}
Destroy target creature with converted mana cost X or less. It can't be regenerated. Then that creature's controller puts the top X cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.
I like cards like this. In fact, this is my favorite card of this round.
ohmusama
Host of the July CCL '10, Host of the March CCL '11
I dunno either.
Actually, that does make a whole lot of sense, good call. Though I wanted to focus more on the mechanics of the card then the flavor, since your equipments basically turn into something like Dark Temper.
Spiteflame Witch was pretty much the inspiration behind it. That and I was afraid to make it so the only the opponent would lose 2 life, making to fall into a higher power level.
Honestly, I liked Gerrard's cards a lot. Though it's been said by everyone else: The Predatory Gouging is undercosted. That's my only complaint. But anyway, good show GM! Good luck on the semi-finals (and perhaps the finals.)
@ Impulsive: I understand that the ability itself is in the right colors. However, I am not sure why your enemy is so special as to have that ability on him. That's all. I mean, that one clause allows him to get past protection.... beef him to 10 power and you can take down the Progenitus that just blocked him..... :|
Take a mechanic from the pre-mirrodin era, and a mechanic after the mirrodin era, and create a card that flavorfully melds both mechanics.
Okay done.
