This is my cube! It’s been a long-time coming, and will always be a work-in-progress. I’m hoping to get pictures up soon, once my next order arrives.
After almost a year and a half of putting my cube together and lurking these forums (and even posting once in a while), I finally took the time to post my cube on mtgsalvation. I was introduced to cube drafting with the Magic Show’s episode on Evan Erwin’s cube in September of 2007, but I didn’t actually build a cube until March of 2009. It was only 360 cards, in order to concentrate what little power it had as much as possible. Also, I didn’t even have enough good cards for a 360-card cube, much less anything bigger.
The main reason it took this long to post my cube was because of how janky it was. Don’t let the first game played with my cube fool you (Turn two Ajani Vengeant off a Mana Crypt, keep your bounceland tapped and go): it was pretty awful. But it was MY awful cube, and I loved playing with it and designing it however I wanted. As time went on, I regularly made extremely minor updates—never spending more than $5 on a card or $20 on a total update.
But I decided that I needed a change. A big change. So in August of 2010, I sold a ton of cards that I wasn’t using (losing interest in vintage and legacy) for a bunch of Starcity Games store credit. I went on a mad shopping spree, spending almost $400 on missing fetches, ravnica duals, staples like Survival of the Fittest, Recurring Nightmare, Treachery, missing planeswalkers, etc, etc, etc. After pumping another $50 in a related spree, I felt that my cube was finally somewhat “respectable” and fit for posting.
Over the past two years, I’ve been slowly liquidating the majority of my vintage and legacy staples in order to improve my cube. It’s finally at an amazing place where most all of the sections are incredibly tight and the power-level has increased dramatically. I’m still missing some key staples, but I look at my cube as a constant project that can always be improved.
Recently I’ve been increasing the combo support in my cube, lifting my planeswalker per color cap, and including more “build around me” or narrow cards with crazy applications. As a result, crazy decks are being drafted that are kept in check by cutthroat agro decks. Some choices aren’t ideal in the eyes of many on these forums, but I like the zany direction my cube is taking.

Took an extended break from maintaining this due to school and life taking over. Lots of changes over the course of the past four months, just going to list the differences between the previous list and how my cube is now.
Took another extended break from maintaining my cube thread. In the past few months, I’ve been upping combo support and including more “build around me” cards that aren’t universally good but have the potential to be insane if you draft with them in mind. I know many won’t approve, but it’s my cube!
The list above as always is very useful but keep in mind it hasn't been updated just yet for M11 so don't worry about those for now. I'd focus on getting as many of the excluded cards as you can and start cutting the more unusual stuff. I am extremely curious to find out how Oath of Druids and Impending Disaster have been for you.
@wtwlf: I like the suggestions; I'll play around with them as I acquire those cards. I'd really hate to see Knight-Captain go. I love him, and so does the group. At worst he's two fogs, but my group always drafts him with Crystal Shard, Erratic Portal, or Waterfront Bouncer for a fog-lock. World Queller is also well-liked in my group. The more answers to planeswalkers, the better. He also does a nifty Smokestack impression.
You are totally right on what needs to be included, though. I'll think on it.
@eidolon:Blue creatures was missing Thieving Magpie; thanks for catching that and the typos. That list is AWESOME. Thanks a lot!
As for no splits or hybrids, I plan on putting some hybrids in soon. At the very least, I want to take out 5 artifacts for 1 hybrid card of each allied pair. Swans, Oona, Redcap, Solifuge, and Finks. Then maaaaybe cutting another 5 cards from somewhere to get 1 of each non-allied pairing. Not sure how I'd do it.
In any case, I'd want them to have their own section, since they play out very differently from gold cards.
As for my cube being 39.25% creatures, 48.25% spells, and 12.5% lands…the discrepancy comes from the artifact section, being 11 artifact creatures and 44 artifacts. I was under the assumption that a cube’s artifact (and sometimes gold) section almost always tipped the scales a little towards noncreature cards.
@calibretto: Thanks for the suggestions—a lot of those are much-needed swaps. My 2cc creature section for black is absolutely glutted in my attempt to convince my playing group that B/x aggro is a deck that exists and can be drafted.
@Donald McDonald: Impending Disaster is pretty awesome. It’s an additional ‘geddon effect in a color that likes it. Games with it usually involve dropping it early, casting 2cc-4cc dudes, and then triggering the disaster and winning. I recommend giving it a try!
Oath is just weird. My friends absolutely LOVE the card (I do too…just in constructed!), so it’s in for now. Every once in a while, it vomits out an Inkwell Leviathan or Sphinx of the Steel Wind from your deck. Most of the time, it does little to nothing. A limited oath deck needs to work without oath, so the question is asked, “why have it?” It will likely be cut in my next update.
Thanks for the quick responses and warm welcome, everybody!
I played Impending Disaster a long time ago, and cut it because it was absolutely terrible. I don't want to give my opponent the last opportunity to cast spells before a 'Geddon goes off. Especially not on a card that telegraphs the effect so blatantly.
Yeah, the best course of action is to just run the best multicolor cards. If it's hybrid, it's hybrid. For the most part you get fairly equal numbers. In my 4 card section I get
2 WU
1 UB
1 BR
1 RG
1 GW
1 WB
0 BG
0 GU
1 UR
1 RW
It's close enough to being equal that it does not effect drafts at all.
I'm going to do a quick run down of your spells.
White
Akrasan Squire doesn't make the cut in a 400 card cube. Student of Warfare would be much better in this slot.
I like both Soltari Trooper or one of the 2/1 pegasus more than Blade of the 6th pride. Same with Whipcorder.
I would play either Ronom Unicorn or War Priest over Knight of the White Orchid.
Soltari Champion is better than Pianna. You are missing Mirror Entity in your three drops also.
I like Celestial Crusader more than Galepowder Mage.
I don't think Knight Captain and World Queller are up to snuff. I would try to get Exalted Angel in one of those slots. And turn the other one into Mirror Entity.
I seem to say this alot, but I don't like Orim's Chant in cube.
Seal of Cleansing is better than Aura of Silence.
Crackdown isn't cubable. Maybe Glorious Anthem in that slot?
I fricken love Pulse of the Fields.
I think both Rout and Hallowed Burial are better than Final Judgment and Akroma's Vengeane.
Blue
While Callous Oppressor is interesting, there are better canidates for that slot.
Master Transmuter is quite narrow.
Most people here have found Ninja of the Deep Hours to be lacking.
I don't really like Sea Gate Oracle.
To replace some of the cards I mentioned, try getting a willbender, a Vendillion Clique, or a Clone or Vesuvan Shapeshifter would all work well.
Is your Mana Drain real, or is it a proxy? If your willing to proxy, get a Jace the Mindsculptor in there somewhere.
I really like Deep Analysis. Which is better than Exclude.
Black
Your 2 drop is way too heavy. Mesmeric Fiend, Order of the Ebon Hand, Withered Wretch, Fledging Djinn could all go for other cards.
No Vampire Nighthawk?
Ob Nixilis is one of the best black finishers.
No thoughtseize? Is this because you don't feel like spending tha tmuch on what is mostly just a duress?
Smallpox is a card you don't see in cubes too often. I like it.
I think there is better removal than Rend Flesh. Like Doom Blade and Terror.
Red
You should put Kird ape into RG.
Goblin Welder is kind of Narrow.
Goblin guide is one of the best 1-drops in the cube.
How is Squee working out for you?
I like Commet storm more than Fireball.
Chain Lightning is missing. But you could wait till they print that foil Burn deck.
Impending Disaster is bad.
You are missing Sulfuric Vortex (which is better than Rack and Ruin)
Pillage is better than Demolish.
Jokulhaups is interesting. I play Catastrophe which is a 6 mana geddon. But sadly you cant perserve a good boardstate for after Jokulhaups resolves.
Green
Are you waiting for Noble Hierarch to rotate before buying it?
Since you play shard cards, I would move Wild Nacatl to the Naya slot.
Add a pouncing Jaguar.
Not a big fan of Civic Wayfinder.
Great Sable Stag is better than Thornscape Battlemage.
I would try to get either a Ravenous Baloth or the new one they printed in M11.
Ant Queen is better than Mycoloth. And Terestodon and Primus is better than Ant Queen.
I like Vines of the Vastwood more than Oath of Druids.
I rather play Harrow than Rampant Growth.
I've never liked Mwondvuli Acid Moss. For one it's f-en hard to spell.
Multicolor
I would go down to 3 cards for each color selection.
WU
- Deft Duelist, Kiss of the Amesha
+ Azorious Guildmage/Plumveil
WB
- Identiy Crisis, Death Grasp, Tidehollow Sucller
+ Vindicate (if possible), Angel of Armageddon,/Stillmoon Cavalier
WR
Cut Goblin Legionnaire, Brion Stoutarm
+Figure of Destiny
WG
- Sledge, Wurm, Tegg
+ Kitchen Finks, Loam Lion
UB
- Agony Warp
UR
- Prophetic Bolt/Electolyze(choose one) and Suffocating Blast
+Fire/ice
UG
- Tempral Spring, Lorscale Coatl
+ Voidslime
UR
- Blazing Specter, Blightning
+ Murderous Redcap
BG
- Nath
RG
- Hull Breach, Stormbind/Sarkahn(choose one)
+ Kird Ape
Artifacts
I'm not a big fan of Lotus Petal
Phyrexian War Beast in an interesting card to see., But I rather ibe Razormane Masticore.
Relic of Progenitus is a bit narow in that it is stricktly a sideboard card.
I always had a hard time getting enough targets for Isochron Scepter. But I can understand not cutting it.
Lands
Is the lack of Alpha duals due to money or to Balance reasons?
I prefer putting colored lands in the mono colored section. That way Blue gets to run both Shelldock Isle and Faerie Conclave while not making Red run Ghitu Encampment. But you are running the 5 mono colored lands that I would.
I would cut the Shards Tri lands for the Worldwake man-lands.
Also, we really need to get together to cube. You know since we live in the same town.
@calibretto: Thanks for the suggestions—a lot of those are much-needed swaps. My 2cc creature section for black is absolutely glutted in my attempt to convince my playing group that B/x aggro is a deck that exists and can be drafted.
Making those changes will still keep BX aggro viable, and will probably even help the archetype out. BX aggro isn't just a bunch of 2-drops. You gotta curve somehow. Sarcomancy into Dauthi Horror into Vampire Nighthawk into Plague Sliver = Good Game.
I think both Rout and Hallowed Burial are better than Final Judgment and Akroma's Vengeance.
Sure, Rout is good, but I am surprised, that you rank Hallowed Burial over Vengeance.
[quote]
With Wrath effects the most important thing about htem is when you can cast them. I much rather wrath the field turn 5 than wrath the field and lose the enchantment/artifact that was going to break the symetry for me.
[
[quote] I don't really like Sea Gate Oracle.
Well he does the job of Bottle Gnomes to block the way of small aggro creatures, but trades away the Healing Salve for Sleight of Hand, which doesn't make it a dead card against control. He also works well with Crystal Shard or Reveillark.
If that isn't enough for you, he got 2 additional points of coolness for the artwork, which not only is Usman's avatar, but also features a blue mage playing with his cube.
Ok, Oracle might be better than I gave him credit. But that doesn't change the fact that there are better options for a 400 card cube.

In any case, I'd want them to have their own section, since they play out very differently from gold cards.
in practice they don't, really. and making your own section for hybrids is going to result in either bloating your cube or forcing you to run subpar cards over good cards. most of us tried the hybrid section ourselves and it didn't work out.
As for my cube being 39.25% creatures, 48.25% spells, and 12.5% lands…the discrepancy comes from the artifact section, being 11 artifact creatures and 44 artifacts. I was under the assumption that a cube’s artifact (and sometimes gold) section almost always tipped the scales a little towards noncreature cards.
yes, those two sections do run toward noncreature spells. but they don't push it to less than 40%. most people are much closer to 50%.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
With Wrath effects the most important thing about them is when you can cast them. I much rather wrath the field turn 5 than wrath the field and lose the enchantment/artifact that was going to break the symmetry for me.
But in that way, you play Hallowed burial just as a bad Wrath, but The 6 mana sweepers can take care of other noncreature threats as well.
You are right, the SGO might not be good enough for a 400 card cube, but you can't just skip the blue 1-3 drops and only play the bombs in this color.
Yeah, Hallowed burial is a bad wrath that messes with reanimation. It also comes down on the turn I need it. Not a turn too late where the red deck has me within burn range. If we had a 3rd 4cc wrath in white I would play that over Hallowed Burial.
Yeah, that's why I suggested he replace it with Vendillion Clique, Willbender, or Clone. 2/3 cards that are in the same mana range.

100% this. A hybrid section of more than one card per color combo is way too many. I'm currently not running any hybrids in three out of ten of my color combo sections and I'm at six per combo (and that's a lot, really). They don't play much differently than gold cards, at least not enough to warrant their own section. And even if they did, there's just simply not enough quality hybrid cards to fill that section up.
I can see having a hybrid section maybe someday once more quality hybrids are released, but it's just not really worth it right now. You'll only end up watering down your cube with sub par cards.
it's not cut and dry, either. fire//ice could be played in nonred or nonblue decks, but the chances are pretty low because it's only really an exceptional card if you have both options. and something like boggart ram gang is close to unplayable in a deck with only one of its colors, just because of the way it's costed. on the other hand, snakeform is a true hybrid that is ideal in g/u (where it's essentially colorless) but works almost as well in nongreen or nonblue decks. i think it saves a lot of unnecessary worrying and sorting to just put them all in multicolor, since they all support more than one color and are ideal in more than one color.
the best way to explain why separate hybrid is a bad idea is that the balance you achieve by having an equal number of hybrid cards is more than canceled out by the unbalancing effect of putting weak cards that will go unplayed (or unsuccessfully played) into your cube.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
All those points are well-taken. I figure there's 1 hybrid card in almost every color-combination (Azorious Guildmage or Plumeveil, Stillmoon Cavalier, Figure, Finks, Oona, Fire/Ice, Redcap, Ram-Gang), so I'll incorporate them into the gold section as I acquire them.
I also plan on re-tooling my cube; not being a stickler on card colors and costs. For example, putting Kird Ape and Loam Lion in the gold section, not counting Goblin Ruinblaster as a 3cc, etc, etc.
I have also ordered 25 much-needed cards (some standouts include Exalted Angel, Student of Warfare, Phyrexian Processor, Sarcomancy, Glen Elendra Archmage, and more), so I'm excited for the big edit.
And as a quick change, I found a Snuff Out in my huge commons box and swapped Rend Flesh for it.

I'm also planning on changing my cube breakdown to 52 of each color, 45 gold, 50 artifacts and 45 lands by cutting the tri-lands and 5 awful artifacts. So when this order arrives, I'll retooling and tweaking things a bit.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
It's going to be an awesome upgrade from the Squire.
Though as awesome as finally getting Exalted Angel in the cube, I must say that I'm most excited about Phyrexian Processor's inclusion. Going to be SICK.
it's not cut and dry, either. fire//ice could be played in nonred or nonblue decks, but the chances are pretty low because it's only really an exceptional card if you have both options.
IDK, I find myself playing the card in pretty much all my red decks. The Fire side is just awesome as I find the dividable damage easily worth two-mana at instant speed.

Calvin and Hobbes
Cube Tutor
Making those changes will still keep BX aggro viable, and will probably even help the archetype out. BX aggro isn't just a bunch of 2-drops. You gotta curve somehow. Sarcomancy into Dauthi Horror into Vampire Nighthawk into Plague Sliver = Good Game.
MTGS Average Peasant Cube 2023 Edition
Follow me. I tweet.
Ok, Oracle might be better than I gave him credit. But that doesn't change the fact that there are better options for a 400 card cube.
Calvin and Hobbes
Cube Tutor
in practice they don't, really. and making your own section for hybrids is going to result in either bloating your cube or forcing you to run subpar cards over good cards. most of us tried the hybrid section ourselves and it didn't work out.
yes, those two sections do run toward noncreature spells. but they don't push it to less than 40%. most people are much closer to 50%.
Calvin and Hobbes

You'll only end up watering down your cube with sub par cards.

the best way to explain why separate hybrid is a bad idea is that the balance you achieve by having an equal number of hybrid cards is more than canceled out by the unbalancing effect of putting weak cards that will go unplayed (or unsuccessfully played) into your cube.

Good change. Snuff Out is a stellar cube card.

It's going to be an awesome upgrade from the Squire.
Though as awesome as finally getting Exalted Angel in the cube, I must say that I'm most excited about Phyrexian Processor's inclusion. Going to be SICK.

IDK, I find myself playing the card in pretty much all my red decks. The Fire side is just awesome as I find the dividable damage easily worth two-mana at instant speed.
