I don't think anyone saw this coming..though Mirrodin Pure/New Phyrexia is still a possibility.

Honestly, I'm sort of surprised, but I'm not complaining. Much easier than having a billion split set arguments breaking out.
As for the Mirrodin Pure/New Phyrexia being some sort of split set, I have to question if wizards copyrighted the names of the Ravnica guilds.
It's entirely possible (if not probably) that those are just the names for the FACTIONS as opposed to the sets.
I'd like to introduce you to someone. His name is Wall of Omens. Say hi, Wall of Omens!
So, Wall of Omens, how do you think you're going to affect standard? What's that, you say? You're going to slot right into an already-established UW Control archetype, and improve the deck's matchup against Jund significantly? Wow, bold words there Wall of Omens.
Forget the name business. Whatever that art is of its great. Possible planeswalker? I've come to expect a little more for Planeswalker art, but I definitely wouldn't mind that.
What if Mirrodin Pure is the name of the third set in the block, and New Phyrexia is the name of the first set in the next? A bit far ahead, but unless they were trolling us hard, I'm not sure how else to see it (then all three set names would have "Mirrodin" in them).
Or perhaps the third set could be split into two "alternate universe" halves, but that seems a bit far out. Or two conflicting forces I guess.
The third set will be Mirrodin Pure. It's the kind of symmetry they have used before... Urza's Saga/Legacy/Destiny, X of Kamigawa, Shards of Alara/Alara Reborn. New Pyx will be for some other part of the product.
Nothing, since my theory of Mirrodin Pure and New Phyrexia seems to be holding water.
The trademarks we have filed would not be for anything "in-game" or for anything but the name of a product, so no, the theory that these are purely in-game factions isn't particularly explanatory either. We're still left with three product names (Mirrodin Pure, New Phyrexia, and Dark Ascension) with no real idea of what they represent.
The news about Ultra Pro products for both Mirrodin and Phyrexia at the time of Scars' release basically confirms that they are two opposing factions withing the block like Ravinca guilds or Alara shards.
Now, what faction is the person in the art part of?
I feel like this could mean that Phyrexia Reborn and Mirroden Pure could be any number of things, from a split set to a fourth set in the block to a super, over arching two year block (YAY SETTING CONSISTENCY!)
New Phyrexia and Mirrodin Pure are most likely faction names like Boros or Rakdos, it seems.
Hopefully Action will be Phyrexia triumphant
And the next sets will focus on the show down between Eldrazi and Phyrexia.
Gonna wildly speculate and say that Mirrodin Pure will have modular as a key word. And New Phyrexia will have wither as a key word.

Don't you see that the whole aim of Moderators is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make infractions literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten.
Mirrodin Besieged fits with the narrow point all sets come to some day. Its the set that brings conflict to the block, the one that develops the plot into the resolution. What if there are to possible outcomes for this situation, one pictured in Mirrodin Pure and another one in New Phyrexia? As a duality, both of them happen and also neither. Like... quantum physics...

On the other hand, this announcement throws previous speculation for a loop.

Though judging from the tag line and picture, Equipments?
Not red herrings, but perhaps something a bit different than we expected.
a) Trademarked, and b) no.

I am interested in why the set size is larger. I'm sure there's a cool story there.
Nothing, since my theory of Mirrodin Pure and New Phyrexia seems to be holding water. They are the factions.
I'm actually happy about this, as a "split" set has the makings of disaster, for reasons I've specified in other threads.
However, two things to note. This is a 155 cards set, not 145. Also, there was no expansion symbol previewed.
Definitely a possibility, although it's a bit weird if true given that Phyrexia still does play a direct role in this block.

Yeah, I just noticed that too.
