This was posted by the magicprotour crew on twitter - new card art for Chandra's Phoenix. http://twitpic.com/2iylyy - From this we can conclude that Chandra is also in M12? Artwork by Aleksi Briclot
I guess they're pretty proud about the planeswalker signature spells - maybe we'll even get them at rare this time. Maybe they'll even be constructed playable
Oh man, I was really hoping the planeswalker affiliated cards would be a one-off. You could be giving them so much more interesting names...
That said, the art is great. Which is pretty much a given for Briclot, but hey.
I'm with viper on this one. I wasn't too keen on the affiliated cards the first time around, but I could deal with it since Duels of the Planeswalkers was kind of hot (at least amongst my friends and such). "Chandra's Phoenix" just makes R&D (or whoever finalizes names the cards) sound lazy and uncreative.
Could it just be a rare PW theme card that got cut from M11?

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

I like the art but I'm kinda annoyed at how unoriginal the names are. They just feel generic and cheesy.
At least the current sig spells are fairly creative (Liliana's Caress, Chandra's Outrage, Ajani's Mantra) but I agree that phoenix is fairly boring (kinda like Liliana's Specter, Jace's Erasure, and Garruk's Packleader). Hopefully, creative will be more enigmatic and at least name it Chandra's Firebird. Still cheesy, but not exactly what it says.

I'm pretty sure the five main Planeswalkers will be base set staples for quite some time.
To be fair, this is hardly a new problem. Yay, Urza's Rage. I guess it just feels a little more gimmicky because the neowalkers get their own cards this time round and are therefore prominent figures in the game as well as the mythos. And also because they are so much less interesting than old 'walkers.

Bolding mine.
I think that's the whole point of core set flavour, nowadays.

Great. Now I'm going to come out of a fug of tabs in two hours cursing your name.
A good practice in internet safety is to scroll over the link and reading what it is (in the bottom-lefthand corner) before clicking. I did, and I am happier and more trope-free. A lesson to ALL OF YOU. Oh, and another: idiomatic expressions that are highlighted in links (even if they do not sound like trope titles) should be perused like this as if you were at work and it said "Free NSFW...Go ahead, your boss won't see!" or something more subtle but along those very lines.
You, Viper, have nobody to blame but yourself lmao

Mark my words: Jace's Ingenuity will be constructed playable. And let's not forget the new Best Creature Ever Printed, Ajani's Pridemate. (That last bit was only half sarcasm)

Jace's Ingenuity already is seeing play in high tier decks. Mind Spring is a thing of the past.
Ajani's Pridemate is a gimmick card in what, after facing it over and over and over on MTGO, I've determined is one of the worst decks in the format.
I hope it is so, because of that I thought something was missing from the theme cards. Only having theme cards at common and uncommon but not rare doesn't make any sense.
This would serve not only to build up the personalities of the planeswalker characters, but also to give newer players a better shot at becoming acquainted with the characters by showcasing them at rarities lower than mythic. In the Magic 2011 design team, we set out to construct them.
and as far as the names go it's nothing new
Magic 2011 features a double cycle of cards that tie to the five core planeswalker characters, and each one mentions the planeswalker in its card name. But planeswalkers showed up in card art and card names long before Magic 2011, of course. Urza had Glasses and Sunglasses as far back as Alpha, before there was even a storyline to give meaning to this Urza person. Back then, in Magic's infancy, few people had any clue who Urza was or what he did, but we knew his name, and that meant he was important. In time, Urza went on to have Towers and Mines and Power Plants, a Chalice and some Blueprints, a Bauble and some Armor, some Guilt and some Rage, and even a Hot Tub. The effect is that today, even those who haven't read a Magic novel or a line of flavor text know this guy was once a heavy-hitter. Mentioning a storyline character in card names has power.
In fact Urza has 20 cards to his name only 3 of which are in "UN" sets. So for it to be getting old that Chandra is getting a 3rd spell it would already have to be old from Urza getting 17.

Not only does this look like the spit fire to me, the tonality and even the poses are similar. Why do we think this is a card for 2012 and not an alt art FNM card?

I woder if we may see a rare "signature" spell for all walkers in M12? My thinking is that Phoenix's have always been rares as far as I can recall.
