Second spin at the review wheel! Time to see how commonly SoM will stack up~
Judging Rubric Utterly Terrible - Just, don't consider this, ever. If I play with your Pauper Cube and open this in a pack, I'll just put down the pack and leave. Close, but So Far - Not totally jank, but outclassed by pretty much everything else in the cube. Borderline - Has potential, but requires some testing to see if it stacks up. Your call. Cubeable - You can add this and probably get the wide concensus. It's solid. Not broken, but solid. Cube It - Or, "why did they make it a common? Oh well, awesome!" Follow me and run it.
Aaaaaaand, for one time only, we have an SoM-special ranking!
Linear = Bad - For all things Metalcrafty and Infectious.
WHITE Auriok Sunchaser - So much potential, brought down by Metalcraft. Linear = Bad Fulgent Distraction - For those who are looking for this niche to fill, Repel the Darkness is much, much better. Close, but So Far Ghalma's Warden - A nice butt, but with Metalcraft, it's basically a vanilla critter. Outclassed. Linear = Bad Glint Hawk - As awesome as a 2/2 flyer for W is, this is only marginally better than Metalcraft cards. Close, but So Far Kemba's Skyguard - Nothing special. A nice card that gives you some small tempo. Cubeable Loxodon Wayfarer - Bzzt, 1-power vanilla. Onwards. Utterly Terrible Revoke Existence - For those that also run Disenchant and Seal of Cleansing, two's enough in Pauper. This is pretty much worst than either of them. Close, but So Far Salvage Scout - Rule 1 of Pauper Cube: 1/1s are hella insignificant. Salvaing does not make this good enough. Utterly Terrible Seize the Initiative - This card really makes no sense to me. Why grant the toughness when you're giving it first strike? Not worth wasting a card on such an insignificant trick. Close, but So Far Soul Parry - A nice Safe Passage that I'm adding in place of... Safe Passage. Requires testing. Borderline Sunspear Shikari - I'm adding it to test in place of an inferior card. I'm not sure yet, but I'll call it. Borderline Whitesun's Passage - I love how we always begin or end with some jank lifegain spell. Utterly Terrible
Overall: Almost nothing here. Moving on, I guess. D:
BLUE Bounds of Quicksilver - Four mana is not worth this kind of effect. Utterly Terrible Lumengrid Drake - Say it with me: Metalcraft is bad. Linear = Bad Neurok Invisimancer - Winsome Phantom Warrior. Cube It Plated Seastrider - I wouldn't say this was bad, but it's outclassed. Also, vanilla is bad. Close, but So Far Scrapdiver Serpent - Yaaay overcosted finisher! Utterly Terrible Screeching Silcaw - I'm going to quickly run out of "Metalcraft is bad" jokes, aren't I? Linear = Bad Sky-Eel School - No way. Blue's creatures are already waaaay too tight for a one-time looter. Close, but So Far Steady Progress - Prolierate is strong, but not in a Cube environment. And not for that cost. Close, but So Far Stoic Rebuttal - Repeat after me: as tempting as it is, it is still Cancel and Metalcraft - the two worst enemies of magic. Linear = Bad Turn Aside - Does making Hindering Light better make it good enough? Unsure about that. Borderline Vault Skyward - Ahahahahaha. Utterly Terrible Vedalken Certarch - So. Tempting. /slaps self Linear = Bad
Overall: Better than white, but still jank as hell.
BLACK Blackcleave Goblin - Infect is bad. Linear = Bad Bleak Coven Vampires - This card makes no sense flavorfully, at all. Oh, and it's also bad. Close, but So Far Blistergrub - Hey look, a really bad Perilous Myr! Close, but So Far Contagious Nim - Good in SoM Limited, terribad in Cube. Linear = Bad Dross Hopper - Has so much potential, but the sac k-k-kills it. Utterly Terrible Fume Spitter - Mogg Fanatic runner up! I love it. Cube It Grip of Darkness - Double Disfigure doesn't dissapoint. Cube It Instill Infection - Single handledly the worst black card ever. Utterly Terrible Moriok Reaver - Vanilla is bad. Remember that. Close, but So Far Plague Stinger - Must I say more? Linear = Bad Psychic Miasma - Potential, but it's one of those cards you can't accurately judge without testing it. Borderline Relic Putrescence - Double linear means quadruple the terrible. Linear = Bad Tainted Strike - The only way to use this is on you're opponent's creatures to prevent damage. And that just ain't right. Linear = Bad
Overall: Some gems, but Infect makes it janky.
RED Assault Strobe - I might get a lot of smack for saying this, but I like to compare it with Berserk. I want to test it, but I may not have room. Borderline Blade-Tribe Berserkers - Potential, but it's Metalcraft. Linear = Bad Ferrovore - Everything about this card is bad. Utterly Terrible Flameborn Hellion - I want this to be good so bad - I mean, come on, it's a common Hellion - but I can't lie to myself. Close, but So Far Galvanic Blast - The only Metalcraft card (I think) that I'm playing, in place of Seal of Fire. But I don't think it's very good; maybe I'll cut it for Assault Strobe. Borderline Goblin Gaveleer - Dreaming of hitching a Vulshok Morningstar onto it makes me want to test it. Borderline Kuldotha Rebirth - So much potential. Not enough artifacts. Close, but So Far Melt Terrain - If you're not playing Molten Rain, then don't play this. And if you are, don't run this either. Utterly Terrible Oxidda Daredevil - So I have to sacrifice an artifact to make this... subpar? Utterly Terrible Scoria Elemental - Outside of making pingers good, no. Utterly Terrible Turn to Slag - Bad removal is bad. Close, but So Far Vulshok Heartstroker - The true definition of close, but so far. Close, but So Far
Overall: Jank is jank. Seriously, very disheartening, this set.
GREEN Alpha Tyrannax - No evasion on a beater is bad. Close, but So Far Blight Mamba - Infect, even on a nice card like this, is bad. Linear = Bad Blunt the Assault - I would laugh if this card wasn't so pathetic. Utterly Terrible Carapace Forger - As cool as a mecha in Magic is, no. Linear = Bad Copperhorn Scout - This may as well be a Sorcery that does the same thing. Remember rule 1 of Pauper Cube? 1/1s are hella insignificant. Close, but So Far Cystbearer - Not much to say. Linear = Bad Ezuri's Archers - Nice removal, but that's all it is. Close, but So Far Molder Beast - A better Stomper Cub. I don't run it, but it's your call. Cubeable Tel-Jilad Defiance - Now my creatures can't be blocked by Signets! Utterly Terrible Tel-Jilad Fallen - Everything about this card is bad. Utterly Terrible Untamed Might - If this gave Trample, I'd consider it. But, as it is, no. Close, but So Far Wing Puncture - Just play Plummet if you need that kind of stuff. Utterly Terrible. Withstand Death - My friend wants me to play this, but the green counterspell isn't good enough. Close, but So Far
Overall: Jank is jank is jank. Our hopes lie with Colorless.
COLORLESS Accorder's Shield - Defensive cards aren't good enough. Close, but So Far Auriok Replica - The worst Replica of them all. Sad. Close, but So Far Bladed Pinions - Evasion and combat tricks don't really mix. I'd play Kitesail over this. Close, but So Far Chrome Steed - I love it, but it's Metalcraft. Linear = Bad Corpse Cur - Infectious Gravedigger is bad. Linear = Bad Echo Circlet - Interesting, but ultimately not good enough. Close, but So Far Flight Spellbomb - No, no, no, no, no. Utterly Terrible Glint Hawk Idol - The closest we'll ever get to Chimeric Idol. Cubeable Golden Urn - I love how bad this card is. Utterly Terrible Golem Foundry - Just as bad as Metalcraft. Utterly Terrible Horizon Spellbomb - Just overcosted by that much. Close, but So Far Ichorclaw Myr - I'm good without it. Linear = Bad Moriok Replica - Card advantage is good. On a stick is better. Cube It Necrogen Censer - The option to bounce for added goodness is tempting, but it's not good enough. Close, but So Far Neurok Replica - Between this and Wizard Replica, I'd play Wizard Replica. Borderline Nihil Spellbomb - If I was looking for something like this, I'd play Bokuja Bog. Utterly Terrible Origin Spellbomb - Rule 1 comes back again. I refuse to pay 3 mana for a 1/1. Utterly Terrible Panic Spellbomb - Just read it again, and tell me you'll play it. Utterly Terrible Perilous Myr - Two damage is pretty good. I don't like giving the opponent a choice, but it's good for all colors. Cubeable Razorfield Thresher - Colorless finisher does not make it good. Evasion does. And it doesn't have any. Close, but So Far Saberclaw Golem - Not good enough for red. Close, but So Far Snapsail Glider - Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. Linear = Bad Soliton - Pseudo-vigilance is not good enough. Close, but So Far Strider Harness - Lightning Greaves this is not. Too much mana for too little an effect. Close, but So Far Sylvok Lifestaff - Must I say anything? No. Utterly Terrible Sylvok Replica - Naturalize-on-a-stick. Love it. Cubeable Tumble Magnet - I've heard only good things about this card. Love love love it. Cube It Vector Asp - Infect is baaad. Linear = Bad Vulshok Replica - Without first strike, this will die more often than not. If only it's ability was Incinerate. Close, but So Far Wall of Tanglecord - Defenders are bad bad bad. Even if it has a huge butt. Close, but So Far
Overall: Biggest section, with the most playables. Ironically, most of these cards will go to color sections (for me, at least).
I disagree with your assessment of Vulskok Replica, which is at least cubeable, if not a "Cube It" card. And I think Perilous Myr is absolutely a "Cube It" card in all-commons.
I don't think the equip goblin is going to be worth the slot for any cubes. There just aren't enough good equipments in Pauper to make him a reliable threat. You said it yourself, " 1/1s are hella insignificant".
I'm also interested in Turn Aside, but there really isn't anything I want to cut in blue, so no since in forcing it in.
Vulshock Replica is alright, but I haven't found anything I wanted to cut for it either.
I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head with this review. I was actually going to do one if you didn't soon and there really isn't much I would have said any differently. Good job.
See, I don't know what all the excitement about Vulshok Replica is. It's probably something that I'll only be able to see once I try it out. Maybe I'll cut Brothers of Fire for it.
Thank you Drahcir. Well worth making it just to hear you say that.
I disagree with your assessment of Vulskok Replica, which is at least cubeable, if not a "Cube It" card.
yeah, i like vulshok replica a lot. you can cash it in for damage whenever it would die, which is cool, or you can go for the full 6 damage on turn 4 if there's an empty board. i don't know a whole lot about pauper, though.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
yeah, i like vulshok replica a lot. you can cash it in for damage whenever it would die, which is cool, or you can go for the full 6 damage on turn 4 if there's an empty board. i don't know a whole lot about pauper, though.
I don't know either. I was just basing my opinion on how I felt it would perform in other cubes. And I think it would be quite solid.
It's decent reach on an efficient beater. I think he's good.
Well it's better than Avoid Fate and Rebuff is an uncommon; and no, neither of those get played, but U can just do a lot more with open mana on an opponent's turn then W or G can. It just seems better than either one of those, but still probably not good enough. I'm only running 360 cards, so there's really no way I can get it in. Maybe in larger Pauper cubes.
Typo in white: You typed Auriok Sunchaser twice. I'm guessing the second one is meant to be Fulgent Distraction.
Most of it is spot-on, just a few random exceptions I wanted to note:
- I'd consider Instill Infection to be borderline. Pingers are extremely powerful in pauper cubes, and a one-time ping that can also double as a combat trick, all while replacing itself, seems okay to me.
- Horizon Spellbomb: overcosted, yes, but split over multiple turns, can still be a great card. Nowhere near as good as Krosan Tusker and company, but should still be borderline for players looking for spells of a similar quality.
Horizon Spellbomb - Is just too overcosted by that much. If activation was 1, I'd love it. But it's scrapping the layer of playable, and that's not good enough for cube.
Second spin at the review wheel! Time to see how commonly SoM will stack up~

On Instill Infection, no way. Not a chance. This is the kind of "Ahahahaha, what a terrible card" cards. Four mana is not worth the effect.
Horizon Spellbomb comes closer, but it's still not good enough. Too overcosted.

Vulshok Replica - Trying it out.
Stoic Rebuttal - Too many good counterspells already for a Cancel-variant.
Glint Hawk Idol - It's Cubeable, but not an automatic staple. I think my judging's pretty fair.
Sylvok Lifestaff - Underwhelming. Maybe I was a bit hasty with Utterly Terrible, but it's still not cubeable.
Perilous Myr - Trying it Out.
