Scars Have Ripped My Soul: A Tale of Mirrodin Ch. 1
The sun rose upon Emeria that morning...I can remember it as if it was yesterday. Elspeth had this look of fear upon her face that still haunts my nightmares. She had told us before that the Eldrazi would soon come upon us, but I didn't know how soon it would be. Our civilization had once been a proud people, but this day changed us...it tore us apart.
My name is Rafiq...you just may remember me. I have commanded armies from the east to the west. I can't remember ever having to flee from the face of the enemy...but honestly, this day I was scared. This was the darkest day in Bant's history I must say. Well, let me try to choke out my words long enough tell you the story.
That morning, I could see the drones scattered across the plain. The Eldrazi clans had made their way to us. Elspeth seemed nervous in her paces and thoughts. I saw the mighty Ulamog in the distance...and I feared him. I watched as my soldiers gathered to me...looking at me for guidance. One by one, they fell before the drones...there were just too many. I knew that this would be the day the kingdom fell. As Ulamog approached the Sky Ruin, I rushed to get Elspeth...my true love. Yes, I admit it now, I loved her. She may not have ever known, but I gave what I could...my life. I had prepared a way of escape for her months before. As I gave the signal, I saw the Archon of Redemption. I held Elspeth in my arms just a moment, as we said our last goodbyes. I felt her soft hair, and I almost lost my focus.
"My lady, it has been an honor serving you...and I pray your safety."
She looked into my eyes, the last I would ever see her shining face.
"Rafiq, these many years you have served me. I am very proud of what you have become. You have made Bant proud today."
As I helped her onto the Archon, I heard the footsteps of millions of drones. I watched as she flew off on the Archon that day, and out of my life forever. That is how it happened, and that is how it went. I have written this letter in the bit of time I have, before I know the Eldrazi's will break into my chamber. The end is inevitable, but I have served my people well. Let this cry be heard "Bant will overcome."
Excellently written. I just want to add that if rafique puts on a grafted exoskeleton and attacks alone with no support, ulamog either blocks and dies without killing rafiq or rafiq defeats the enemy entirety. If only he could have found that grafted exoskeleton... (tear)
The ending sentences of the first two paragraphs are annoying. Not separately, but the fact that you wrote two "I can't say much more...except what I'm about to write..."'s onto the end of two consecutive paragraphs seems redundant and hackneyed.
not bad, but we need more info. what time period is this? why is rafiq on zendikar? what does it have to do with mirrodin? just needs more backstory, other than that, it's excellent. i'm not flaming you.

I think as I continue the saga, I am going to give clues and hints of why this is all happening, and what brought the alara travelers here. I might even use a whole chapter to explain why the events and times are as they are. Good idea?
Didn't someone write a Koth/Elspeth romance a bit ago?

Stoneforge Mystic is GILBIC.
Dude, Blightning sucks. It's just a slightly better Mind Rot!
Squadron Hawks? Maybe okay in Limited. They're just 1/1 fliers, after all.
Why pre-order 30 Primeval Titans off Ebay for 25$ each? Sun Titan is obviously the best.
