Minor nitpick alert. You need to msg Goblinboy to put the {/list} on the end of your second list to make the code work. Very good article, even if I do know nothing about legacy.

Kind of disappointed you didn't include Maysonet's Rack/Balance deck, from the description of it I thought it would be posted at the end of the article. Those are the only -very minor- complaints. Excellent work.

Another not so nit pick being that Tradewind Riders certainly do not belong in RGSA. Uktabi Orangutan and Spore Frog are also probably errors. It seems like the editing for this was kind of rushed.

Thanx for the article. Survival has always led to some funky decks. They certainly needed the tempo boost Anger gave them, but even then they seem always to be a turn or two too slow.....
Consequently, I'm looking forward to Survival decks becoming popular again. Thanx heaps!

Morgan_Coke, there is a link for Maysonet's deck in the article. It says "Wizards Restricted" with a hyper link. The deck was really ridiculous, so have a look.

Cynical Squirel, you are so very correct. Forget editing, I should never have allowed that to see print. I think Goblinboy would likely leave that be, calling it a content issue. I must've gotten some crazy quasi-ATS build. Damn!

Good Stuff,

I just love how Survival of the Fittest has become a Meta deck...

I played R/G Survival Advantage in a Legacy tournament and I was amazed at the deck's variability. The deck is 1000% better with a Survival on the table. Without Survival, I lost some pretty funny games, including one to a turn 5 Rhox, turn 6 Rhox. I also found out that hasty Deranged Hermit is a bad creature because of all the Goblin Sharpshooters.

However, the real power of the deck comes with its ability to run on a single Taiga/Mountain and mass basic Forests. You can't do all the crazy stuff you'd find in a dedicated Survival deck, but at least you can play your Baloths and Flametongues while the other deck has Wastelands and Ports going wild on your lands and a Needle on your Survival. Those are the games you can win with RGSA.

Please tell me that was some random kid with a 70 card mono-green deck... I don't think my sanity could handle Rhox being playable in Legacy.

Hi,

Some time ago, after reading your 2006 article on the past, present and future of survival, I made a deck similar to the one you made.

Its record is really great in casual multiplayer, and now I'm considering whether it would be tournament valid.

I'm very fearfull of extirpates.. Though the deck is fast, splashing blue gives you more plan B's when your survivals get pated.

Any thoughts on this?

All the decks in this article are somewhat outdated now (not surprising, considering that they predate Tarmogoyf), but Survival is still a playable archetype. RGBSA (or even RGBwSA), GBW Rock Survival and Elf Survival are all playable today. Tradewind Rider isn't strong enough to justify ATS anymore, Welder Survival suffers to Krosan Grip and Graveyard Removal (relic and crypt more than extirpate) becoming widespread, as does Rec-Sur. All these varieties should be reasonably playable in a less developed meta game.
