[Clan Mono-Black] Winter 2010 Tournament: Bring Your Own Standard
First of all, thanks to rianalnn and the clan mods for letting us host the tournament thread in the clan forum. You guys are awesome!
Have you ever wondered what Standard would have been like had Fifth Edition been the core set while the Mirrodin block was legal? Or how Ravnica block would have combined with Lorwyn block?
Well this year, Clan Mono-Black presents a Bring Your Own Standard tournament, open to all clan members and all clan mods! As always, these tournaments are completely separated from the Clan Contest and Clan of the Year Points.
Your deck should be comprised of cards from two blocks and one core set.
Legal Blocks Include
Ice Age (Ice Age, Coldsnap, Alliances)
Mirage (Mirage, Visions, Weatherlight)
Tempest (Tempst, Stronghold, Exodus)
Urza (Urza's Saga, Urza's Legacy, Urza's Destiny)
Masques (Mercadian Masques, Nemesis, Prophecy)
Invasion (Invasion, Planeshift, Apocalypse)
Odyssey (Odyssey, Torment, Judgment)
Onslaught (Onslaught, Legions, Scourge)
Mirrodin (Mirrodin, Darksteel, Fifth Dawn)
Kamigawa (Champions, Betrayers, Saviors)
Ravnica (Ravnica: City of Guilds, Guildpact, Dissension)
Time Spiral (Time Spiral, Planar Chaos Future Sight)
Lorwyn/Shadowmoor (Lorwyn, Morningtide, Shadowmoor, Eventide)
Alara (Shards of Alara, Conflux, Alara Reborn)
Zendikar (Zendikar, Worldwake, Rise of the Eldrazi)
Banned Cards
All cards banned in Legacy, the block format, or any standard or extended format. As a general rule of thumb, if its banned in anything, don't play it.
Rounds The number of round will be determined by the number of participants. I have left slots for 8, but will gladly include more.
Each will be chosen randomly for the first round. As we did last year in the EDH tournament, we will do battle in the cold and unforgiving Phyrexian Arena. As such, normal advancement is not present. Instead, each person will be awarded 1 point for each win and deducted 1 point for each loss. (So if you go 2-1, you would get a +1 (as you gained +2, then lost a -1), and your opponent would get a -1 as he got a +1 for their win, then two -1s (a total of -2) for their two losses. Ties and bies will net a +1 ranking.
Basic Swiss +2/+1/0. Standings will be posted on the first page and each round announcement post and will be updated when both players confirm the results in the thread.
The Playoffs
After X amount of rounds of matches (X is to be determined by the number of participants), we will cut to a top Y (where Y is also to be determined by the number of participants). In the top Y, matches are to be reverse seeded (so if its top 8, 1 would face 8, 2 would face 7, ect...). Top Y will be single elimination, so if you lose your match, you're out of the race for the top, though you still may compete for the final standings. After the first round, the standings will be adjusted and re-seeded for the second round.
Gameplay This will be conducted via Magic Workstation.
Basic game rule apply: 20 life, starting hand of 7, mulligans, ect.. blah. You should all know this.
Deck security codes will be placed here next to the name and points of each participant. If the deck code does not match, get the information via screen cap or what have you and report it. A mismatched security code will result in automatic disqualification from the tournament, so please be sure.
Security codes can be submitted up until Monday, December 20th at 11:59 PM. As such, they can be changed up until that time as well. Please post the security codes in this thread.
Should you contact a player and they have not responded, please quote the PMs here and say that you attempted to make contact efficiently (and at a reasonable time, i.e. not all your attempts are minute attempts) before the deadline of the round, the contacter will be rewarded with a bie (+1) and the contacee will not be rewarded at all (0). Quoted PMs/IM logs are required to earn this +1.
Dropped games. They happen because the system is not perfect. However, they also happen because there are cheaters out there. If any given person drops a game one per match, disregard it and start that game again. Should the same person drop again, disregarded it and start that game again as well. Should that same person drop a third time, report it as a game loss. MWS logs are nice to keep in these situations.
You will have one week to complete each match. Since the end of December is filled with holidays such as Christmas and such, I will be more lenient.

To be honest, whoever draws me will have some easy wins. I've never played this format before, and have no idea what blocks/core set would be best with one another.
So then two points brought up:
1)Banning of any card in the block/when it was in standard.
2)Inclusion of SOM. I was under the impression that it wasnt allowed because it wasnt a full block, but are there any objections to someone choosing it? I have none myself.

I support both of these.
Also, what about using a Swiss system (3/1/0) instead of the 1/1/-1 system you propose?

If I make two decks that have the exact same cards in them. Do they have the same security code?
I am asking this because I am leaving in a day and I can't get on the computer I will submit the code until after Christ mas but I can get to other computers.

Deck Security Code: f8ab58b6We should use Swiss instead. 3 points for win/bye, 1 for draw, 0 for loss. It makes more sense than the system you propose.
Essentially, I just don't want to see a million instances of 'fully powered Affinity plus Skullclamp'.
Also, is SoM legal?
1)Banning of any card in the block/when it was in standard.
2)Inclusion of SOM. I was under the impression that it wasnt allowed because it wasnt a full block, but are there any objections to someone choosing it? I have none myself.

No objections here.
Swiss would make more sense, but I don't really care either way.
This, like a billion times over.
If block banned lists aren't used, I'll just build Ravager Affinity and show everyone how terrible this format is if this isn't utilized.
Does this mean you're signing up for the tournament?
And I agree, I really don't want to face fully powered affinity, that does not seem like fun at all.
