Wydwen, the Biting Gale is awesome. 3/3 evasive body with a cheap and versatile way to bounce herself repeatedly is gravy. PLUS FLASH makes this card an incredibly powerful and versatile general choice. As if that weren't enough, BU is one my favorite color combos, and certainly a strong choice for Commander. I have seen several different builds of this deck, some that are all counter and draw, some that use Wydwen defensively only and let big nastys do the attacking, some with equipment to suit up Wydwen and go for 21, and some that are aggressive with evasive critters and lots of creature kill.
These are all good ways to go if you ask me, but I wanted a diversity of options and solid ways to tutor them up consistently.
So, here are two different Wydwen builds, one which is an artifact control list and the other older straight UB.
Three possible paths:
- Wydwen (preferably with a Loxodon warhammer) going for 21 (aggro)
-Long game, control the stack and board with well placed counters, bounce and kill and then drop some people (wurmcoil or a pw ultimate or two) that will either win the game or get you closer (Control)
-Tunnel Vision plus hinder, JtMS, Spin into Myth, etc. for an instant mill machine. [thought this was a secret of mine till I noticed that Vendillion Clique players use it too ]
Other cool Tech:
-Parallel thoughts is awesome. Sets me up with whatever I need, and in spades to boot. OR, takes a bunch of cards I dont want
-Venser's Journal is really cool, especially since we draw so many cards. basically game with Necropotence
-dralnu, lich lord is amazinng spell recursion that effectively doubles my spells in a way. PLUS, if need be, I can sub him in as my general if the play group gets whiny about sitting down across from wydwen again lol either way, this guy is awesome!
Thank you for any suggestions or criticisms, but please include explanations (Sometimes im pretty slow and dont get interactions..even really simple ones lol)
EDIT: I added Dralnu as another possible general (people got sick of playing against wydwen sometimes, started to build a new one and realized it be easier just to combine decks) and made some changes correlated with this ie more instants and sorceries. I think its also a bit more oriented for multiplayer now than it was, though I know Im still missing alot of the staples and good cards Im missing. working on it
And now, finally, my new list which is built around artifacts and reminds me a little of Tezzerator decks (without some of the meanness though lol)
This version is all about tutoring for specific control cards and engines. It doesnt NEED artifacts to run and makes great use of powerful instants, sorceries and planeswalkers, but also takes advantage of the strong synergies with artifacts that are present. For example, some of the best tutors are based on artifacts, and since artifacts have become so versatile as threats, answers and engines, this deck has no problem setting itself up for the win. If i find the time i may turn this into a sort of primer with card explanations for everything, but for now ill just go over a few of my favorite things (besides just the fact that UBis awesome and Wydwen is hella powerful lol)
kursai-gama = in general a really really really good equipment that i never see around. On any creature its an immediate house!
plus all the best stuff from the old version, going for 21 with wydwen, tunnel visioning for a key card or milling someone with it for a kill outta nowhere
The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginning-less time, darkness thrives in the void but always yields to purifying light.
I invision a future where one is not mighty when he can silence a crowd with brutality,
but when he leaves them speechless with wisdom.
Good to see another Wydwen list! I play more of a draw go style deck but I've had it for a few years now and here's some of the really important stuff:
Hatred: It only kills 1 person of course and does a bunch of damage to you but this kills out of nowhere and having it in your deck helps prevent people from messing with you if they know you are able to just randomly kill them. It's kind of expensive but randomly killing people who screw with you is lots of fun. Sunder: This is my main kill condition in the late game, usually I go Evacuation (you should run this) into Sunder into flash my general in at EOT. Play land, equip something and your are probably way ahead now. Empyrial Plate: This is the most important equipment in the deck. There's a lot of card drawing and it is cheap to cast and equip. Also really nasty with Sunder. Forbid: Again with lots of card drawing this can really help you lock up the late game and the card is dirt cheap. Pretty unfair with Necropotence.

I love this reply because none of your suggestions are wicked expensive Empyrial Plate is hella good! for some reason that card cost 4 to play for some reason in my head. much better than that in reality. Riptide Labratory is a must, Vendillion Clique works well with Tunnel Vision, and that package in general seems really strong. Gets me more use out of Trinket Mage, so it is xtra fantastic!
For some reason I always imagined Forbid being one of those really expensive legacy cards, but its a buck! Score! would wanna test it though before adding it in for sure. Rhystic Study should have been on the great cards I dont own list, Ive been meaning to pick some up for EDH.

Cuts are a lot tougher because I don't know what your playgroup is like. I would really make an effort to cut some of the more expensive sorcery speed stuff since this deck REALLY wants to have mana untapped during other players turns (like Wurmcoil Engine, what does he really do for the deck?). Planeswalkers have also been very unexciting for me in pretty much every deck I've tried them. This one in particular doesn't run a lot of creatures so protecting them can be rough. Hope that helps.
Dralnu is awesome. Not only is he a cool alternative general, but he effectively doubles my spells, so he has been really good for me.
see OP for more info. I can talk about it more if anyone wants

I think venser journal is bad in this deck. You don't concentrate in drawing in this deck.
I suggest you exchange venser journal with opportunity (draw 4, instant). More draw, more choice.
I know what you mean, sometimes its just a bum draw that does not very much. but when it works, its awesome. necropotence gets so broken it might as well be an instant scoop in some cases. I can get big grips and gain virtual CA by not having to discard down, plus the life gain is really relevant with how much life this deck bleeds out over the course of the game.
Im not sold on it myself but I am not sure if I want to take it out or not.. thanks for the input! Opportunity really should be in here somewhere (if I had it lol)

Im sorry but... Waterfront bouncer??? really??? I think there are better ways to bounce out there than this guy.
vampire nighthawk -> Stinkweed Imp Nighthawk isnt very impressive in EDH. He is mainly used as a deturrant. The imp will give you the same thing + the option to dredge him back if needed.
riftwing cloudskate -> Venser, Shaper Savant less to cast and you can stall a spell if need be. Plus its a wizard if you want to use Riptide Laboratory. The flash aspect of him also allows you to keep open your mana until the last second.
Jace Beleren not very impressive in EDH. I would swap him out for a draw spell. Sorcery speed and slow to draw his cards makes him sort of suck.
Brainbite sort of spendy for sorcery speed for what it does. You might consider Vendilion Clique instead considering it has instant speed and a body to it afterwards.
No Mystical Teachings??? 2 tutors in one seems very good to me. It can be used to tutor up flash creatures too.
I sort of always wondered how Bitterblossom would work out in a Wydwen deck as well...

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
Awesome suggestions, except I really like Jace Beleren as a political card and a usually more than 3 cards for 3 mana spell that has on very few occasions slain his older brother sitting across from me ready to ultimate, so he's in;) and your right, I dont know why I was really into the bouncer for a while there, he turned out to be extremely disappointing
all the other cards are out that you mentioned pretty much, but I have taken the deck in a totally new direction! artifact mania with the tezzerett brothers!
Oh! mystical teachings never works out well for me whenever I test it, but Ill try again. It just never seems to be able to grab whatever I want when I need it and seems hella expensive for its condition..
if I had venser and riptide id use them, thats been needing to go in here for a while, but even if I did have some they would probably wanna go into Momir before this.
EDIT: should I start a new thread or radically alter OP? does it matter? My new version is really really different from this list

Mystical teachings is good if you have hatred (if you want finish your enemy) or evacuation (if your enemy have many token or creature).
ahhh i see i see, i figured there were particular targets you often look for. Are there any other clutch instants that you would recomend running with it?

wtf/? I posted the list and yet its not here now?! grrrr what did i do..
so now i need to sort and post and tag and explain that artifact version all over.
ill get to it soon. stupid computer
anyways, isochron scepter could actually be cool, lemme think about how it would work out with the spells im running. I know its powerful but people round here hate seeing it, so I dont want it to be like really jerky, just good.. yknow?
i mean obviously i wont repeatedly be chanting or silencing with it like from legacy, but id rather get alot of fun cards than mean ones

I actually like that the pit makes colored mana, and I don't usually find the life thing to be a drawback. I can easily see someone going with the sand though, or both if they wanted

Master transmuter + arcbound reclaimer or sphinx summoner = repeatable tutors or recursion engines for cheap, plus all of these cards are plenty strong on their own
inkmoth nexus + loxodon warhammer or kursai-gama and/or tezzeret agent of bolas = easy poison victories out of nowhere
trinket mage + 1 mana artifact package = incredible versatility, especially with arcbound reclaimer recursion
kursai-gama = in general a really really really good equipment that i never see around. On any creature its an immediate house!
plus all the best stuff from the old version, going for 21 with wydwen, tunnel visioning for a key card or milling someone with it for a kill outta nowhere
hope you enjoy this more recent incarnation!

It's kind of expensive but randomly killing people who screw with you is lots of fun.

Forbid: Again with lots of card drawing this can really help you lock up the late game and the card is dirt cheap. Pretty unfair with Necropotence.
There's a lot of other stuff I'd like to see in here though, for extra card draw I have Mystic Remora (this could be Rhystic Study) and Skeletal Scrying. For budget equipment I recommend Grafted Wargear which is pretty solid with your general since you can bounce her and has an amazing 0 equip cost. Lastly I have a little wizard package of Venser, Shaper Savant, Vendilion Clique, Trinket Mage and Riptide Laboratory. I like this package a lot.
I love this reply because none of your suggestions are wicked expensive
Empyrial Plate is hella good! for some reason that card cost 4 to play for some reason in my head. much better than that in reality.
