Hey guys, this is my first attempt at openly reviewing a set's impact on a portion of the cube community, so if this is bad, please forgive that. I've had a rough week. Unfortunately, the set I had to review is one that clearly hates Pauper cubes.
My current rating system is as follows:
Staple--We all know what this means.
Good--Should probably be in all but the very tightest cubes. As in, there is possibly a reasonable, non-budget related argument for not including it.
Borderline--Means exactly what it implies. It's teetering between decent and a Pass.
Pass--This card isn't very good, but it does have some redeeming quality for at least some cubes.
Do not want--This card is either straight up terrible/linear or the cube has no need for such a card. Prepare to see a lot of these.
Oh, and I kinda cheated on some of the cards as they straddle ratings.
The cards are organized by color and then alphabetically within those sections. With that out of the way, let's get started.
First of all, I've included artifacts with activated abilities requiring mana of specific colors in their corresponding color sections.
Copper Carapace-- It only costs one to play, which is good. The downside is that it costs too much to equip + you can't use it to make a defensive creature better. Pass
Flayer Husk--I actually like this one. 1 for a 1/1 is not terribly exciting, but being able to graft that 1/1 around for 2 mana is cool, albeit a little expensive. A nice little package. Good
Hexplate Golem--A sizeable body for an even more sizable mana cost. Almost nothing will beat it in combat, but it costs a million mana and it dies to all the common artifact removal. Ulamog's Crusher is an example of an expensive Pauper creature done right. This...is not. Do not want.
Ichor Wellspring--This card is way too narrow to be worth it. Basically, all it's going to do is cycle. Do not want.
Myr Sire--It's kind of like Mogg War Marshal, but not quite as good. It could have been worse and I may give this one a try. Borderline
Phyrexian Digester--Infect, for the most part, is too linear to even think about using slots in our cube for. I wouldn't run this if it cost [mc]1[/mc]. Do not wanty.
Rusted Slasher--4 mana is a pretty hefty cost for most spells and especially for one so fragile and narrow. Do not want.
Razorfield Rhino--Hooray, another parasitic mechanic! 6 mana for a 6/6 is only ok given how easily it can be destroyed(or bounced/countered blah blah blah) by pretty much everyone. God forbid you have to play this when you don't have Metalcraft. Do not want.
Shriekhorn--This could mill 5 cards per activation and I still wouldn't run it. Like all mill in cube, it's attacking an axis with no viable support. Do not want.
Training Drone--If they would have given this Defender and a "[mc]3[/mc]: Loses Defender..." ability, we'd be talking about this card. But they didn't, so let's not. Do not want.
Ardent Recruit-- Will be a vanilla 1/1 for W somewhere in the neighborhood of 80+ of the time. Even the decks that can get 3 or more artifacts in play probably won't be looking to add this card. Do not want.
Banishment Decree--Way too expensive for temporary removal, common or no. I wish this were costed at 2W(maybe WW) instead. Do not want.
Blade Sentinel--An extremely inefficient body + an ability that you have to pay for that you should probably get for free. Do not want.
Frantic Salvage--Too narrow and too expensive on top of that. Not a cube card, obviously. Do not want.
Leonin Skyhunter--A flying bear(cat, really :P) that's on curve. I'd put Stormfront Pegasus over this, but you should find room for this as well. Staple.
Loxodon Partisan--My gut tells me that this is too expensive, but it's sizeable and it's half an anthem effect. I'm probably being too generous here. Borderline.
Master's Call-- There are cards that do this more effectively and even those aren't good enough. Do not want.
Fuel for the Cause--This card makes Cancel look good and that should tell you something. Do not want.
Gust Skimmer--On the lower end of the power curve for 2, but it's easy to cast and can be given evasion. The problem comes when you want to include this as a blue card. It's clearly not good enough to oust any of the viable spells. Pass
Mirran Spy--Too narrow. Moving on. Do not want.
Oculus--Elvish Visionary is better than this and it's still not good enough. No need to mention that one is blue and the other green. The effect isn't needed in the tightest color in cube. Do not want.
Quicksilver Geyser--A little on the expensive side, but I'm running Whiplash Trap(mostly because the alternate cost is relevant, but still), so who am I to tell you not to try it? If it only said creatures, I think it would be on par with Undo, if not in a slightly different deck, but being able to bounce almost anything makes this something to think about. Borderline to Good.
Serum Raker--There are cards that do what you want this card to do(Attack, right?) for an easier cost and then there are the cards that do what this card does and then something better. Do not want.
Spire Serpent--Metalcraft is bad, blue is good blah blah. Do not want.
Steel Sabotage--Probably better than Annul(I'm not going to do the quasi math), not that that means anything. Do not want.
Turn the Tide--A combat trick that can allow you to trade up, but is still worse than pretty much every bounce, counter, or creature spell in this color. Um...Do not want.
Vivisection--This is a really steep price to pay to draw three cards, but drawing three cards is good. In reality, this will probably cost you 6 or more mana + two cards to get three. Looks a little worse now, doesn't it? Do not want.
Caustic Hound--Below curve and it hits both players. No. Do not want.
Dross Ripper--A hill giant certainly isn't the worst thing for Pauper limited, but the ridiculously expensive pump ability pretty much leaves it at that, and probably a little bit worse. Do no want.
Flensermite--Infect is bad in cube. Do not want.
Horrifying Revelation--This card is so bad it makes my soul hurt. Do not want.
Morbid Plunder--Worse than better cards that probably still aren't good enough. Cryptic enough? No? Do not want.
Phyresis--As strange as this sounds, from a Pauper cube perspective, this aura is probably better than 95% of infect cards for cube, because at least to can slap it on an actually efficient creature. I'm not saying it's good or anything, though. God no. Do not want.
Phyrexian Rager--This is what you're looking for when you want a cantripping creature. That extra power and toughness make this card playabe where so many others fail. Good.
Scourge Servant--Infect is bad...Do...*sigh* not want.
Spread the Sickness--Too expensive and the bonus probably won't do anything 99% of the time.
Blisterstick Shaman--I wish it cost 1R, but I'd settle for a 2/2 to think about. Alas, it is neither. Pass.
Burn the Impure--A black spell that kills 3 toghness dudes would probably get praise here, but thi is a red one. You know, the color that has more efficent burn than can actually go to the face? Do not want.
Concussive Bolt--3 is overcosted for this effect, so 5 is...worse. Do not want. This is getting old, isn't it?
Crush--It will be okay, but red really doesn't have room for this card. It barely, if at all, has room for Shatter which is better than this card even though there aren't a ton of artifact creatures in Pauper. Pass
Gnathosaur--Expensive as hell for a vanilla creature most of the time. Do not want.
Koth's Courier--Sometimes this card has evasion and even then it's pretty tame. Do not want.
Kuldotha Ringleader--Now here is something that could be interesting. It's a little topheavy, but the effect + a 4/4 could be well worth the card. I feel Good is a little generous for a 5 mana aggro creature. Borderline.
Ogre Resister--We've seen this guy before. And as silly as it may seem to nonpauper cubers, a vanilla 4/3 for 4 is plenty good. Good, but not so good that you have to run all versions if you run one.
Rally the Forces--Better than the +2/+0 red instants, but I still wouldn't say that red needs this kind of reach. Let's be honest here: It's not the worst thing you could play. Borderline.
Spin Engine--3 power for 3 mana is fine when it is so easy to cast. This is comparable to Vulshock Replica, which has been just fine, and this one might actually get through more damage on average. I think there is probably room for both, though. Good.
Blightwidow--Seems to be the best possible inclusion for Pauper as far as Infect cards go. It's a beast against nearly every flyer in the cube. Even that pesky un-suspened monster is a 2/2 after it gets tangled in this spider's web. Still though, it's Infect and probably too narrow to warrant a slot. However, if you're looking for a control-only creature in green, this could be the guy. Borderline.
Fangren Marauder-- Hefty cost for a pretty much vanilla dude. Pass.
Glissa's Courier--A 2/3 is a pretty key size for Pauper cubes, but just look at any viable card in this slot and decide if you'd rather have this card. Like with the red one, my guess is no. Do not want.
Mirran Mettle--Metalcraft is bad. Just play better pump spells. Do not want.
Pistus Strike--Granted green has a tough time with flyers, but not so much you should run this or other [card]Plunge[/card effects. Do not want.
Rot Wolf--I'm not as negative against this card as I should be just because it can net you card advantage. It's like a better Elvish Visionary when defending against x/2s or it just shrinks a big, incoming dude. Obviously, this card still isn't worth it. Do not want.
Tangle Hulk--5/3 for 5 is not the most amazing thing, but it's ok. 2G for regenerate is way too expensive to be worth it. Often you will be left with a decision to play spells or leave mana open to protect your surprisingly fragile 5 drop. The are certainly worse cards, but I don't think this is needed. Pass.
Unnatural Predation--I'm not even going to discuss this. Just play better pump spells. Do not want.
Viridian Emissary--As far as Pauper is concerned, this guy is fine. He's nothing exciting and he clearly doesn't do what Tribe Elder is designed to do, but it's card advantage on a guy. There are worse cards, so if you're running one of those, give this a shot instead. Borderline.
So, that's it. Feel free to debate what you think about certain cards, my inadequacies as a reviewer or whatever. I know it was simple, but I didn't have much to work with.
Agree with you for pretty much all of these reviews. Quicksilver Geyser is interesting, but ultimately I think the 5-five is just a step too much for a tempo card, regardless of how strong the tempo is. In a way, it's like a time walk, if you force them to tap out next turn to replay their threats, but still, 5 is a hefty amount of mana. I'd absolutely test it if it were 2UU, but as it is, I'm on the fence about it.
I think you may be undervaluing Copper Carapace. Sure, a defensive deck doesn't want it, but an aggressive deck will love +2/+2. Vulshok Morningstar is a great card and the effect is still good if you're paying a little more. I'd say it's better than Flayer Husk and Leonin Scimitar.
Infect, Metalcraft and Proliferate are just oppressively bad for cube =[. Beyond that, one of the better commons in the set, Phyrexian Rager, is a reprint. So I think it's more of an anomaly than something to expect in the next set.

But aggressive decks don't want the 3 equip cost. Anyway, I agree that Carapace ain't too bad, but I still doubt it's cubeability.

I like the review, thanks for putting it up! I think you were right about almost all of the cards, but for this set in particular there have been a lot of maybes so it'd be great if someone eventually did a re-review after testing.
Copper Carapace I'd put as borderline myself, but I'm not sure any of us really know how good it really is. It's true agressive decks hate the equip cost, but it's also true that the +2/+2 might be enough to make that irrelevant. Given that Morningstar's so amazing, I think that this probably has a place in the cube.
However, it may well be a pass, though I think it has potential.
Hexplate Golem, while costing a million mana, isn't absolutely dead in all cubes, slow large cubes are desperate enough for another Crusher they might play this. Pass, IMO.
I think that Quicksilver Geyser can only be played in the phase of the game where tempo is starting to not matter nearly as much. It Trap is being payed for 5 most of the time, I think that means it isn't good enough. Pass, IMO.
Personally, I don't think that 4 mana 4/3's make Good when Ringleader makes Borderline, but that's rather unimportant.
Lastly, I think the awesomeness of Blightwidow is not translated into Pauper cube as Cloudcrown Oak and Penumbra Spider beat it out for the exact same spot. Being able to attack is important and in the case that they have no fliers, it's a pretty bad wall. I'm not entirely sure, though.
Tangle Husk, while maybe being a Pass in a vacuum (IMO, borderline) probably deserves a slot in many cubes as green finishers are generally horrendously bad.
Wolfer, while I value the opinion and think you're rather good at evaluating cards, I cannot think how you came to the conclusion that Scimitar was bad (or not good enough).
Well, I just cut the Scimitar for the Husk. I don't know, it just never really did enough for me. It might come back in, but for now I'll try out the other equipments in its place.
