Hi, this is my first Edh deck. Its meant to be 1 v 1. After I read the primers in this forum, i am inspire to write one myself( Hopefully i do a good job) as a way to give back to the community. I started playing Edh when i decided playing Standard is a waste of money and time for me. ( I play Casual and i dont join tournments. So theres no reason for me to buy cards or build new decks whenever there are rotations or new sets) Therefore, i feel that Edh is the format where i can fit in perfectly. I'm using the official banlist http://www.dragonhighlander.net/rules.php. As my area that i play has no banlist for 1 v 1, I am able to use Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, etc. This the first time I attempting a combo deck and i needed all the help for this deck. Thanks =)
You should play Sharuum if you
-like combos
-like explosive/broken starts
-like brainstorming on how to spend your resources the best way
-like making a lot of decisions during a game
You should avoid Sharuum, if you:
-have a casual playgroup
-don't like to be a big target during multiplayer
-don't like to shuffle your deck many times in a game:tongue:
Card Choice
Creatures Magister Sphinx: Able to make any opponent to die in 2 swings regardless how much he has previously. If Sharuum able to bring this sphinx in play, it just need 1 turn to end the game Disciple of the Vault: Don't ever think this is a harmless 1/1. It can kill any number of opponents on board with Sharuum and sculpting Steel Combo. And the best part, it cost 1cc which make the combo to be online earlier Trinket Mage: There's 9 searchable target in my deck, no reason not to include it Phyrexian Metamorph: It's a upgrade of Sculpting Steel. It can also act as a removal for legendary creatures. Thus getting itself to the graveyard.
Instants Mana Leak,Miscalculation,Mana Tithe,Force Spike,Spell Pierce,Negate: Cheap counters thats easy to cast in deck of 3 colours. Their drawback won't be that great as I use Winter Orb and Armeggadon also. Dismantling Blow: As I need to destroy some artifact or enchantment thats hindering me, why dont I draw some cards in the process also. As i have so many mana rocks and low on cards in hand, paying the kicker wont be a problem usually Path to Exile,Swords to Plowshares: One of the best removal in white Thirst for Knowledge, Frantic Search,Fact or Fiction:Instant card draw and cards you discard won't be a waste as Sharuum can bring back Vampiric Tutor,Enlightened Tutor,Mystical Tutor: Tutors are king in EDH, thats what make a deck of 99singles be so consistent Intuition: This card can search 3 artifacts, it doesn't matter what ur opponent chose as Sharuum can bring back what you want Lim-Dul's Vault: A tutor that can search what you want and arrange the top 5 cards, what more can u ask for in a combo deck Counterspell: One of the best counters in the whole of magic Stoic Rebuttal: Practically a UU counterspell in a artifact deck Hinder: This card can sometimes destroy voltron generals decks single-handedly Brainstorm: There's a reason why it is restricted in Vintage. There's 1 article about brainstorm, maybe you can read it in your free time( i will post the link if i ever find it again.) Dark Ritual: Speed is important for a combo deck Into the Roil,Repeal.Capsize,remand: These are tempo cards, slowing them down a turn or two will be enough for this deck to win. Go for the Throat,Dismember: Instant point removal for generals or other creatures

Search deeper for answers or win con Compulsive Research: Card draw and cards you discard won't be a waste as Sharuum can bring back Yawgmoth's Will: The power level of this card is insane in late game when your graveyard is filled with tutors and atifacts, etc Duress,Inquistion of Kozilek: Hand Disruption. Armeggadon: As I have many artifact mana rocks, this will usually disrupt opponent more then me. Ancestral Vision: Its best in a opening hand and not so bad later on as with this deck games tend to last longer
Enchantment Leyline of the Void: One of my graveyard hate card and combo piece to infinite mill phyrexian arena: 1 damage for an extra card per turn, totaly worth it Rhystic Study: Slow them down if they don not pay. Combined with Winter Orb and Armegadon, this will slow them down by alot or giving me more cards advantage, either way its to my advantage
Planeswalker Jace, the Mindsculptor: Card advantage and win-con all in one sweet package. No reason not to use it Tezzeret the Seeker: Tutor artifact and a mana ramp(with the untap abilities). It's meant to be in this deck
Land
There's a lack of uility lands because of my Winter Orb and Armegadon, I prefer lands that produce coloured mana to prevent myself from mana-screw
I realised the previous decklist is too comboish with little counterspells,disruption and removals. Most of the time, relying on speed to excute the combos. Most of the time it does work out but when against blue permission decks, this deck will have some problems due to the low density of threats. Therefore i change my decklist to make it more resilient by sacrifice speed.
For this deck, I'll usually have some mana rocks then I tutor for Winter Orb or Armageddon. Then I'll start going for combos, disruption, or just particularly relevant artifacts.

Previous decklist's gameplay
Against Permission decks, You have to play more carefully. Because its a combo deck. It has quite a low density of threats. Opponents can wait and just counter the pieces of the combo. You can try to replaying Sharuum (thanks to all the mana rocks) until you can exhaust them of their counters. If they do, you can set up any of your combos for the win.

You might also consider Glassdust Hulk (if you haven't already). He cycles early game and Sharuum gets him back from gy. Then after the Sharuum/Steel bit he swings for massive unblockable.

I wouldnt say i want to control the board, just want to disrupt my opponent to have enough time for any of my infinite combos out.
Glassdust Hulk is kinda clunky. It cost 5cc and it have to last 1 turn before I can attack with it. This will give opponent enough time to destroy it and he will know what i plan to do next turn also
Welcome to the format if i had to guess id say you sold a lot of standard stuff to make this list, haha you got some sweet stuff in here i wish i could afford lol. List looks pretty solid. I would pick different combos personally, im not a fan of the future sight top combo or the leyline helm combo...i would recommend mind over matter with temple bell and an eldrazi titan, and thopter assembly with time sieve over them. Also power artifact is insanely easy to get infinite mana with this deck. I would also say austere command is the best wrath in the format, there are so many power enchantments in the format (mind over matter, necropotence, mana reflection ect...) and same with artifacts, sometime you just gotta sweep em. I guess if you dont see many though than not playing it is justified. Otherwise i dont think i can argue much with this list. Oh except i dont see grim monolith, card is awesome.

When I say "control the board until you can get your combo off", then "disrupt my opponent to have enough time for any of my infinite combos out" is precisely my meaning.
With this approach, you are completely relying on getting off the Leyline/Helm or Sharuum/Steel combo during mid-game with either disciple on board or bitter ordeal (and probably a counterspell) in hand. This means that you will have to deal with some particularly nasty stuff on the board up to that point as some of it will slip by your counterspells and make it into play. Thrun, the Last Troll - Regen, Uncounterable, and untargettable, and swinging big by midgame. Glissa, the Traitor -Likely with an Umbra or equiv, swinging for fatal by midgame. Zur the Enchanter - Will likely be shrouded and indestructible by midgame. Uril, the Miststalker- same thing.
You'll see Blightsteel Colossus, Darksteel Colossus and the fat eldrazis, behemoths, etc.
Barter in Blood and other non-targeted, non-destroy removal gets around all that. Evacuation gives you some breathing room and another shot at countermagic or just time to get your combo off (and it doesn't touch your artifacts). Austere Command is selective, it's flexible, it doesn't have to kill any of your artifacts. And there are plenty of enchantments out there that should scare you. While I don't say any of these spells are "auto-includes" or anything, some way to deal with the creatures I mentioned previously are required, and none of them are "bad versions of wrath".

Ya, i sold all my standard cards to make this deck. Now I am a full time Edher, ha. I chose future sight top combo since they are both good cards independently and i don't need to deliberately search for them so i just treat them as additional win con that don't waste any space in my deck. Most importantly i chose the leyline helm combo is because its a 2 card combo. If you happen to have leyline first turn, you can just search for helm then hopefully u will win the game. It's kinda lame but its efficient.
I had tried the thopter assembly with time sieve combo in the earlier version. Actually I form sharuum because i can finally use the thopter combo( I got a extended thopter combo deck then mtg changed the whole extended format :mad:). After playing the combo in sharuum, I found the 3 cards are not good independently.If i have 1 in hand then i need to use 2 tutors to search the other 2 pieces which make it kinda slow. So i decided to drop the idea.
btw, i realise i got 2 basalt monolith in my decklist. My bad, one of it should be grim monolith,haha:embarrass:

I admit my removals on creatures, enchantment and artifacts are rather light so my gameplan asap get combo online. I tried to make my deck mana curve as low as possible to be alittle faster and combos more interlink so I can have more options to win the game. I'll will think of Austere Command maybe as a that can solve all my removal problems. But I don't know what to take out, haha. In my area, no one play voltron general so i don't really know how i will fare.
There's only 2 reason why i will put disciple. 1) cheapest to combo off n 2) One of the 2 combo in my deck can kill >2 player at once in multiplayer. The other is the leyline helm combo, the remaining combos can only kill 1 person only
And yup, Esper colours are so fun. There's so many combos availiable, made me think so hard what combo should i include. If i am bored, I can just swap some combos(e.g Open the vault combo) with others and it gonna be a whole different deck n playing style:)

Yawgmoth's Will is a good card overall and Teferi is due to the increasing blue decks in my meta.
Any suggestions on what I should take out for those cards I mention or any cards that can improve my deck further? I running out of ideas to improve the deck. Any help will be appreciated, thanks
Yagmoth's will is amazing in late game. As i play this deck mainly for 1 v 1, I wonder if phyrexian arena and Bribery is needed, is it too slow? Should i put more removals? what should i take out or put? I believe this decklist still can make more improvements but I dont know what is the right balance of disrupting opponents, combo pieces and tutors. Please help..thanks!!
My Sharuum decklist is now pretty much complete for competitive multiplayer games (though I'm sure it would destroy in 1vs1). See link in my sig for deck details.
I had to take a different approach to my deck build because I'm a budget player, and I only started playing about 2 years ago, so my collection isn't that big. I don't have own tutors like Demonic Tutor or Fact or Fiction yet and make due by increasing the overall consistancy of my deck rather than increasing the ability of tutoring. I also have a personal preference of having a bit of an 'army' to work with as Lorwyn was the block that got me into MTG. but I digress...
I've found that the infinite mana combos can become a nightmare for your opponent. I'm running 5 at the moment, and they are all easily accessible since the cards that generate the combos are also high threat, need to respond to, type of cards...which makes them worth running.
Once I have infinite mana Golem Artisan's trample is deadly, Overrule's life gain is solid with the exception of general damage (which our playgroup doesn't play with) and Blue Sun's Zenith will mill an opponent.
Pentavus, Triskelion and Dross Scorpion make for some diabolical shenanigans often resulting in infinite damage to be passed around to all players...see my combos for details.
I actually took out Magister Sphinx as everytime I've played it, I'd get the roling of eyes. It's a good sideboard if someone is getting under my skin. (With so many combos, I doubt I'll need it anyways)
1.Phyrexian Metamorph will be a straight upgrade of Sculpting Steel. It can also be paid with 3 mana and a measly 2 life. It got an option to copy other general(removal and get itself into graveyard in the process) or do the same stuff as Sculpting Steel. A combination of Sculpting Steeland Clone. Nice
2.Dismember will replace Pongify. -5/-5 can kill most generals instantly with 1 colourless mana and 4 life. The ape is cute but dismember will be better for long term
3.Gitaxian Probe allows you to see your opponent's hand before going in for the kill. But it also will give you less information about your hand. No idea if it's worth it or not though

Talisman of Progress,Azorius Signet,Mana Crypt,Talisman of Dominance,Dimir Signet,Gilded Lotus,Sol Ring,Coalition Relic,Grim Monolith,Orzhov Signet: All these mana rocks are to help me to be faster and to ensure that i wouldn't be mana screw.
Lotus Bloom: Is such a sweet card. At the end of the Sharuum combo you can use sharuum to bring back lotus bloom to produce 3 mana need for bitter ordeal if needed.
Voltaic Key: Other then untapping mana rocks, it also serves a way to produce infinite colour mana of your choice. It will in explain in Ways to win
Nihil Spellbomb: Uility card that are tutorable using trinket mage or by other tutors
Pithing Needle: Mainly use to stop activations of generals( Azami or Captain sisay,etc) or any cards u wish to stop
Helm of Obedience: Its just here because of the infinite mill combo
Sensei’s Divining Top: A staple of any Edh deck
Winter Orb: As i had many mana rocks and my cc of my spells are low, it will disrupt opponent more than me
Land

Scourglass: Need to wait 1 turn to use its effect, not good enough for me
Extractor Demon: Too bad he only mills( can't exile them from the game)
Artificer's Intuition: I usually won't keep a high casting cast opening hand.
Force of will/Misdirection: Most of the time, I don't have blue cards in card to discard
Memnarch: 7 mana to cast and 7 mana to control a non-artifact creature. Just take too much mana consumption
Expedition Map: Don't have much land i wouldn't like to have it early. Unless its Mishra's Workshop or Tolarian Academy(too bad it's ban)
Mishra's Helix: It's only good in the right situation. Too narrow
Memory Jar: I think stroke of genuis and Brainseyer are enough for my deck
Ethersworn Canonist: I got 37 non-artifact spells, not sure is it good enough for this deck
Glassdust Hulk: I feel Disciple of the Vault and Bitter Ordeal is enough.
Sphinx of the Steel Wind/Inkwell Leviathan: I'm not a beat-down deck
Dimir House Guard: Limited stuff I can search using the transmute ability
Master Transmuter/Venser, the Sojourner: Not much cards I can use to maximise the use of it's ability
Cryptic Command: The UUU is pushing the limits of a 3-colour deck
Mortify: Not sure I need another point removal, I got 3 point removals for creature and 2 for enchanments
Solemn Simulacrum: Not much basics in my deck and I think i have enough mana rocks to ramp
Return to Dust : Not bad but I prefer Dismantling Blow, I just love to draw cards
Darksteel Forge: This card just doesn't do much for me
Crucible of Worlds: It's only good for the stripmine lock and it is very situational.
Duplicant: Too mana intensive, too slow. Besides, I put more point removal. Thus, I no need Duplicant
Etherium Sculptor, Cloud Key: : The deck got little artifacts for them to be of any use.
Momentary Blink:
Stroke of Genius,Braingeyser: I'll be casting winter orb or Armageddon,thus this card won't be of much help
Diabolic Tutor: Casting cost a little too high
Decree of Pain: Casting cost too high as I am playing winter orb and armageddon
Future Sight: UUU is tough
Mindslaver: I am playing winter orb and armageddon. Making it hard for me to do infinite loop
Ways to win
Currently I only use 3 Ways to win
(1) Sharuum the Hegemon +Sculpting Steel + Disciple of the Vault/Bitter Ordeal= Infinite damage or removal of cards in library
(2) Leyline of the Void + Helm of Obedience + 1 mana=Infinite mill of cards(all are removed from game)
(3)Sharuum the Hegemon + Magister Sphinx(if Magister is in graveyard): Player left 10 life and 1 turn clock
Although I not using the combos below anymore, I just keep them here in case anyone want to use them for reference
(4) Mindslaver + academy ruins + 12 mana = Infinite control of opponent's turns
(5) Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth + 2 mana + Stroke of Genius/Braingeyser = target player draw infinite cards
(6) Etherium Sculptor/Cloud Key + future Sight + sensei's divining Top: you can draw your whole library afterwards you can cast all the remaining rocks cheaply due to Etherium Sculptor/Cloud Key then you can proceed to combo(4) or combo (5)
(7) Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth + 2 mana + sensei's divining Top: you can draw your whole library then proceed to combo(4) or combo (5)
additonal combo( in case you need it for any of the combos above)
(8) Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth + 2 mana + Voltaic Key + any colour mana rock: infinite coloured mana
How to play sharuum
For this deck, I'll usually have some mana rocks then I tutor for Winter Orb or Armageddon. Then I'll start going for combos, disruption, or just particularly relevant artifacts.
My most common Intuition pile is probably Sculpting Steel, Magister Sphinx, Lotus Bloom
My mana per card is currently 2.14

Previous decklist's gameplay
Against Permission decks, You have to play more carefully. Because its a combo deck. It has quite a low density of threats. Opponents can wait and just counter the pieces of the combo. You can try to replaying Sharuum (thanks to all the mana rocks) until you can exhaust them of their counters. If they do, you can set up any of your combos for the win.

You might want to consider including some non-targetted removal just in case they slip something troublesome past you:
- Scourglass
- Barter in Blood
- Austere Command
- Evacuation
..
You might also consider Glassdust Hulk (if you haven't already). He cycles early game and Sharuum gets him back from gy. Then after the Sharuum/Steel bit he swings for massive unblockable.

I wouldnt say i want to control the board, just want to disrupt my opponent to have enough time for any of my infinite combos out.
If i want, i rather use Damnation instead of Barter in Blood as i usually do not have creatures on board. Austere Command and Evacuation will be a bad version of wrath of god as the destroy all artifact will hurt me more. I dont really scare of enchanment except maybe Future Sight.
Glassdust Hulk is kinda clunky. It cost 5cc and it have to last 1 turn before I can attack with it. This will give opponent enough time to destroy it and he will know what i plan to do next turn also

Ok, I'd like another shot at this....
When I say "control the board until you can get your combo off", then "disrupt my opponent to have enough time for any of my infinite combos out" is precisely my meaning.
With this approach, you are completely relying on getting off the Leyline/Helm or Sharuum/Steel combo during mid-game with either disciple on board or bitter ordeal (and probably a counterspell) in hand. This means that you will have to deal with some particularly nasty stuff on the board up to that point as some of it will slip by your counterspells and make it into play.
Thrun, the Last Troll - Regen, Uncounterable, and untargettable, and swinging big by midgame.
Glissa, the Traitor -Likely with an Umbra or equiv, swinging for fatal by midgame.
Zur the Enchanter - Will likely be shrouded and indestructible by midgame.
Uril, the Miststalker- same thing.
You'll see Blightsteel Colossus, Darksteel Colossus and the fat eldrazis, behemoths, etc.
Barter in Blood and other non-targeted, non-destroy removal gets around all that. Evacuation gives you some breathing room and another shot at countermagic or just time to get your combo off (and it doesn't touch your artifacts). Austere Command is selective, it's flexible, it doesn't have to kill any of your artifacts. And there are plenty of enchantments out there that should scare you. While I don't say any of these spells are "auto-includes" or anything, some way to deal with the creatures I mentioned previously are required, and none of them are "bad versions of wrath".
Glassdust Hulk is a little "clunky", yes. But he's also early cycling for a card while giving you another combo option, both very much welcome in here. And yes, any decent opponent will expect what's coming from him on the next turn, but any decent opponent is already going to know exactly how you can combo out from turn one anyway. Bitter Ordeal and Disciple won't surprise anybody that plays much edh, and won't surprise a noob more than once.
But that's just my take, and I certainly wouldn't claim to be an expert or anything.
Anyway, welcome to the format, Sharuum is a very enjoyable commander able to be built in a lot of varied/nuanced ways. She's always been a lot of fun for me, even though she does draw some hate at the multiplayer table.

Ya, i sold all my standard cards to make this deck. Now I am a full time Edher, ha. I chose future sight top combo since they are both good cards independently and i don't need to deliberately search for them so i just treat them as additional win con that don't waste any space in my deck. Most importantly i chose the leyline helm combo is because its a 2 card combo. If you happen to have leyline first turn, you can just search for helm then hopefully u will win the game. It's kinda lame but its efficient.
I had tried the thopter assembly with time sieve combo in the earlier version. Actually I form sharuum because i can finally use the thopter combo( I got a extended thopter combo deck then mtg changed the whole extended format :mad:). After playing the combo in sharuum, I found the 3 cards are not good independently.If i have 1 in hand then i need to use 2 tutors to search the other 2 pieces which make it kinda slow. So i decided to drop the idea.
btw, i realise i got 2 basalt monolith in my decklist. My bad, one of it should be grim monolith,haha:embarrass:

I admit my removals on creatures, enchantment and artifacts are rather light so my gameplan asap get combo online. I tried to make my deck mana curve as low as possible to be alittle faster and combos more interlink so I can have more options to win the game. I'll will think of Austere Command maybe as a that can solve all my removal problems. But I don't know what to take out, haha. In my area, no one play voltron general so i don't really know how i will fare.
There's only 2 reason why i will put disciple. 1) cheapest to combo off n 2) One of the 2 combo in my deck can kill >2 player at once in multiplayer. The other is the leyline helm combo, the remaining combos can only kill 1 person only
And yup, Esper colours are so fun. There's so many combos availiable, made me think so hard what combo should i include. If i am bored, I can just swap some combos(e.g Open the vault combo) with others and it gonna be a whole different deck n playing style:)

Yawgmoth's Will is a good card overall and Teferi is due to the increasing blue decks in my meta.
Any suggestions on what I should take out for those cards I mention or any cards that can improve my deck further? I running out of ideas to improve the deck. Any help will be appreciated, thanks

My Sharuum decklist is now pretty much complete for competitive multiplayer games (though I'm sure it would destroy in 1vs1). See link in my sig for deck details.
I had to take a different approach to my deck build because I'm a budget player, and I only started playing about 2 years ago, so my collection isn't that big. I don't have own tutors like Demonic Tutor or Fact or Fiction yet and make due by increasing the overall consistancy of my deck rather than increasing the ability of tutoring. I also have a personal preference of having a bit of an 'army' to work with as Lorwyn was the block that got me into MTG. but I digress...
I've found that the infinite mana combos can become a nightmare for your opponent. I'm running 5 at the moment, and they are all easily accessible since the cards that generate the combos are also high threat, need to respond to, type of cards...which makes them worth running.
Once I have infinite mana Golem Artisan's trample is deadly, Overrule's life gain is solid with the exception of general damage (which our playgroup doesn't play with) and Blue Sun's Zenith will mill an opponent.
Pentavus, Triskelion and Dross Scorpion make for some diabolical shenanigans often resulting in infinite damage to be passed around to all players...see my combos for details.
I actually took out Magister Sphinx as everytime I've played it, I'd get the roling of eyes. It's a good sideboard if someone is getting under my skin. (With so many combos, I doubt I'll need it anyways)
I'm not really impressed with the Sword of the Meek, Thopter Foundry combo since both cards are pretty useless on their own.

1.Phyrexian Metamorph will be a straight upgrade of Sculpting Steel. It can also be paid with 3 mana and a measly 2 life. It got an option to copy other general(removal and get itself into graveyard in the process) or do the same stuff as Sculpting Steel. A combination of Sculpting Steeland Clone. Nice
2.Dismember will replace Pongify. -5/-5 can kill most generals instantly with 1 colourless mana and 4 life. The ape is cute but dismember will be better for long term
3.Gitaxian Probe allows you to see your opponent's hand before going in for the kill. But it also will give you less information about your hand. No idea if it's worth it or not though
Cards that don't make the cut:
1.Mental Misstep: is too narrow.
2.Dispatch: Sometimes I may not have 3 artifacts to make it work
3.Despise is another cheap discard. But if i not playing Ostracize which is basically the same, chances of not using Despise is high
I guess that's what the new set got to offer for Sharuum.

Therefore I put in more 'control' and 'tempo' and 'CA' cards, So far, it is perform better now. More testing will be needed.
I think Mishra's Workshop will not be needed as most of my artifacts are mana source. And I need coloured mana for my spells.
PS: I will be purchasing Underground Sea next month =)
