Note: When building your SB, be sure to include 4 Show and Tell and at minimum one more Emrakul and a second Dread Return if you wish to have the sweet grave hate resistance that is available. Beyond that, Crippling Fatigue is likely necessary for Teeg. And some anti-artifact hate is a good plan. I like Echoing Truth.
Can you see how it works? Take a moment before looking at my answer key.
The important detail is that Basalt Monolith can untap itself. You need to get Basalt Monolith and Mesmeric Orb in play.
Now do you see it?
With those two artifacts in play, you can tap and untap the Basalt Monolith as many times as you want, putting cards into your graveyard one at a time. Eventually Emrakul will activate, shuffling all cards that you have been milling back into your library. If you milled 3 Narcos, a "horseman" and a Dread Return before he does, great - Dread Return a fattie. The Narcos go to your graveyard. Then keep milling until you get to Emrakul. If you did not, just shuffle up and try again until you do. In this way you can use all your Dread Returns without paying a single mana. On the way, be sure to force your opponent to discard any defenses he may have for free via Cabal Therapy.
Let me give you a summary of how the deck works.
Opening Hand
There is a LOT of cheap search so an opening hand of only one land is probably acceptible as long as you have two search spells also. Pretty much any two, three, or four land hand will be ok. But every hand is improved by some search cards in it. Five lands is ok if one of the other cards is Brainstorm.
In Search Of
Your goal here is to have Basalt Monolith and Mesmeric Orb on the battlefield. The deck has plenty of search to get you there and a bit of defense along the way. You should be able to assemble the pieces by turn 3 on rare occasion, but often by turn 4 or 5. If the opponent has proper defenses, you will probably be delayed a bit while you deal with that. So it is not an especially fast combo by Legacy measurements. However unlike faster combo you have a decent amount of protection to see it through.
You also need Emrakul, Sharuum, Blasting Station, Dread Return, and three Narcomoebas anywhere in the library or graveyard. If some of these are in your hand (up to the number of Cabal Therapy in you library and grave yard) you will be able to discard them after you start going off. You do not need mana or any cards in hand. The combo takes several minutes to actually play out.
The Infinity Mill
Once you have the set up complete you can tap Basalt Monolith to untap itself as often as you like. Each time you do, Mesmeric Orb will put a single card from your library into your grave yard. Whenever you get to Emrakul its reshuffle trigger goes on the stack. In most cases, you should just let it resolve immediately. Other than that, you are looking to reveal a Narcomoeba and a Cabal Thetapy. If you reveal Cabal Therapy first, keep going. If a Narcomoeba comes first, its ability goes on the stack. Do not let it resolve yet. Keep activating the Monolith with the Narcomoeba on the stack until you see a Cabal Therapy. When that happens allow the Narcomoeba to enter the Battlefield and, without passing priority, cast Cabal Therapy. The Narcomoeba will be safely back in your graveyard before your opponent can respond. Note that if Emrakul comes up with the Narcomoeba ability on the stack, you can let Emrakul shuffle it back in your library to essentially cancel the trigger. You are probably naming Swords to Plowshares. If any of your Narcomoebas are exiled you have to go back to the search stage and get the Blasting Station in your hand and hardcast it. Now that you have seen your opponent's hand you can use the second Cabal Therapy in this same way to nab Stifle or Path to Exile. There really aren't any other cards to be concerned with. If the opponent has nothing pertinent from the first Therapy, you can use the others to discard combo pieces from your own hand if you are holding any.
Once these details are in order it is safe to let the three Narcomoebas enter the battlefield. Then you are looking to get Sharuum, Dread Return, and Blasting Station in your grave yard before revealing Emrakul. This may take several times through the deck but it must be exactly this way. Once you get this, Dread Return Sharuum who brings in the the Blasting Station. When Blasting Station enters the battlefield you are in business. Just continue to bring the Narcomoebas into play one at a time and sacrifice them to the Station as you do. You will do infinite amounts of artifact damage to any legal target including your opponent.
Some notes:
Triggers and priority are a big part of playing this deck properly. If you do it right, you can remove any chance the opponent has of preventing the combo with graveyard hate and creature removal. That leaves, in order of effectiveness...
Extirpate (must be discarded)
Leyline of the Void (must be bounced)
Wheel of Sun and Moon (must be bounced)
Pithing Needle/Phyrexian Revoker (must be removed)
Gaddock Teeg (must be removed)
Runed Halo (must be removed)
Chalice of the Void, Trinisphere (not hosers, but pretty good on turn 1)
Krosan Grip, Qasali Pridemage, etc (delays the combo)
counterspells (delays the combo)
Tgodzor, it was that way for years. The power-level errata was removed a few years ago. Amazingly, not one of the cards I am using is newer than that ruling. That is why Legacy is awesome. This combo was just waiting to be found.
Also, I think the deck will have to have Cabal Therapy in case you have 2 Narcos in the opening 7 or both Blesings or something.
What about Thirst for Knowledge instead of Ponder or Brainstorm? It'd solve the 2 Narco's/Blessing problem, while also giving you a chance to dig deeper. Plus you can discard some of your extraneous artifact lands. Otherwise, seeing the deck makes me want to be really greedy and run Power Artifact as well.
Nullstone Gargoyle does not work since the first noncreature spell has definitely already been cast - by you. For now, I am not going to replace it with another creature. I made some significant changes which probably make Thirst no longer a reasonable option. Cabal Therapy probably does that job now.
Iona i get totally and completely, why Nullsonte Gargoyle and Angel of Despair?
Sphynx of the steel wind is probably way better than the nullstone will ever be, can be transmuted, etc. Likewise since all your cards are flying Stormtide leviathan makes sense as well. if you dont go that route Sundering titan, Inkwell Levithan, and Blazing Archon are reanimator targets for a reason.
Also agree that the accceleration would be the most important thing for your deck. If you use ancient tomb you can concievable go
T1 - Ancient tomb, Orb
T2 - Land, Basalt Monolith, Combo for win
If you do that and on T2 you drop an island Daze also makes complete sense. I would also consider doing a 1:1 split between Emrakul and Blessing so you can get extirpated.
The biggest issue the deck has though is im not sure it wont rollover to GY hate if you dont get a thresher
I love how this idea is so organic. It can perform just like Cephalid Breakfast, but no color base.
I'm not sure why the Gaea's Blessing plan is better than the mill yourself and get back an autowin. Iona/Angel/Thrasher seems worse since its more vulnerable.
Cool beans! This deck looks a lot to me like Cephalid Breakfast for some reason. I think both are quick, powerful combos that put all your cards in the graveyard and then win. Breakfast of course wins by infinite #s of creatures, whereas you win with three infinitely large Wake Thrashers and two fatties, so they have the advantage there, but their combo is more easily disruptable by splash hate imo and you have FoW which is awesome.
I don't think Therapy is necessary because you already have Brainstorm to put those cards back if you happen to draw them, and that would allow you to cut a color and add something like Spell Pierce for more protection. I would also want to find room for a 4th Wake Thrasher just in case they have blockers.
On second thought you might need access to Therapy though because Krosan Grip sort of pees in your Cheerios.

Why would anyone, in their right mind, extirpate blessing when they can just extirpate Narcomeba and win?

Asking people to remove quotes in their signatures is tyranny! If I can't say something just because someone's feelings are hurt then no one would ever be able to say anything! Political correctness is stupid.
This is a cool combo and all, but don't you think Painter + Grindstone wins for 1 more mana overall while not filling your deck with cards that you never ever want to draw like Narcomoeba, Dread Return, Gaea's Blessing, fatties, etc? They're still both tutorable with Enlightened, and aren't worthless on their own.
They can Extirpate either. So I swapped out the FoW's for Thoughtseize. I would love to have both, but I can't see how that is possible.
Therapy smooths out a lot of weak spots. It lets you discard the fatties if you draw them and either discard or sacrifice Norcos. And you can do boken stuff like animate Iona for protection, then Terastodon, kill off three permanents, sacrifice it, animate it again, three more, sacrifice it, animate Wake Thrasher, win.
The comment about Servant/Grindstone is an important one that I thought about. When I played that deck I was always worried about playing the Servant first because a lot of cheap removal can take him out. Opponents usually have either no artifact hate in the main or just something like Engineered Explosives or Pernicious Deed, both of which are slower than this deck.
Zirath, I really want to use Mox Opal. I am in three colors for Thoughtseize and Therapy, which I think are critical. I can't seem to fit the artifacts for it. My take seems to be a bit slower and more controllish.
EDIT: Pinuster, I had Transmute Artifact, but I bet it is not as good as Enlightened Tutor. If it is, it could solve the Mox Opal problem, since both require plenty of artifacts to sacrifice. Thing is, Enlightened is faster.
Well thing about Painter's Servant is that once you play him, all of your cards become pitchable to Force of Will to protect him, and all of your REB/Pyroblasts become 1 CMC Counterspell/Vindicates. He's not that hard to protect
Anyway I understand that you don't want to go that route and I hope this works out for you. I just think there are way too many completely dead draws here.
Perhaps you are right about the dead draws. I am actually moving today. You believe that? I am dying to fire up Cockatrice to goldfish this, and I haven't got the time. Maybe Thirst for Knowledge is important after all. Though, with no acceleration in the current version, I am going to have to redesign much to make it work.
What an interesting idea. I have to compliment you on that.. Very nice! I also like the name, although calling it Hermit Druid would've been cool too.. =P
I had to read Mesmeric Orb to understand the workings of the deck.
I don't think it's viable though as there are a lot of two card combos that don't see (a lot of) play: Leyline/Helm, Painter/Grindstone and Power/Monolith. While it's hard to compare these combos with each other it kind of sets the bar. Apparently two card combos aren't enough to perform well.
I can see where this is stronger than each of those combos because it is easier to cast in terms of color and quantities of mana, and isn't susceptible to creature removal. It is susceptible to grave hate though.
The other problem I have with this deck is that all your combo pieces can only be used to combo. I can't imagine you using the Orb to mill your opponent or using Basalt as a mana battery. Leyline of the Void, Painter and Grim Monolith are good cards on their own and serve different functions in decks that support them. What happens now is that Enlightened Tutor is super narrow. It is only useful to search up the missing piece. Not only that, you run white for Enlightened Tutor only. Even Intuition would seem more useful as you can randomly use it to fetch up three FoWs. I would play neither of those, it's just a bad example.
But I have to mention it again; very creative find!
1 Gaea's Blessing out 1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn or any eldrazi in. Also 1 mainboard Power Artifact or SB to cast said eldrazi as an alt win if they remove Narcomoebas?
Also you could put in Grindstone + Painter combo in board/main as an alt win.
Basically you could load this up with a bunch of alt-wincons.
You guys telling me to take out a Gaea's Blessing have not thought it through. What happens if I draw it?
Reinvos, Enlightened Tutor gets you SB cards. If the deck proves to draw too may of the combo pieces that we want in the gy, we may have to import some dredge tech.
I would recomend that you use something similar to narcomebia as well to prevent that from getting extirpated, but since there is nothing else it doesn't matter.
Where you can have protection from extirpate you should. If you go the power artifact route people are mentioning you can always cast him as well and just win the game...
Zirath, I really want to use Mox Opal. I am in three colors for Thoughtseize and Therapy, which I think are critical. I can't seem to fit the artifacts for it. My take seems to be a bit slower and more controllish.
I agree with that, but I feel like there is enough overlap that we can abuse stuff like this. Top is able to hide cards as well. I'm not sure where to fit Therapy and Thoughtseize. You want to disable your opponents but you also want to assemble your combo quick.
I guess the real question is do you want speed or resilience?
I think you need more tutors and I'm not a huge fan of Transmute Artifact. I think you can forego green mana all together, if you must you can play Crucible of Worlds to replay your mountain. Enlightened Tutor is great for this deck and I think Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas is full of win as well. Regular Tezz is a good tutor too but I think he just costs too much for this deck and Fabricate would be better, but it still might be too slow.
You don't need all 4 Dread Return since you can just keep milling into it when you need to.
I don't like your reanimator targets other than Iona. I would either look to Reanimator for better options or just play Bogardan Hellkite and not need Anger at all.
I want to take out Wakethrasher because he's not that great without the combo and with it he's just cute and unecessary. The problem is that you need to replace it with something blue because as it stands you only have 19 blue cards, because you can't count 3 of the Narcs since you need them all to reanimate your stuff.
Ancient Tomb would be really good here since everything is so expensive. Grim Monolith may be worth considering as well. The more I think about it Transmute Artifact isn't bad but I still think the other cards I mentioned are better. Now that I think about it Lotus Petal is probably a 4 of.
I like preordain better than Ponder in this kind of deck because you get to keep the good card and ship the other or still dig three deep.
Edit: I havent read most of the thread since it only loaded the first couple posts when I replied to it. Sorry if anything was already covered.
As the nameless fellow explained, Extirpate on Narcomoeba is still deadly, so there is no benefit by having only a Blessing and an Emrakul there. In my hand, a Gaea's Blessing can be cast, drawing me a card. Emrakul is stuck there. I suppose I could Therapy him away, but then that is one more thing to worry about when there is no need to. There is the issue of the Tropical Island messing with the mana base, but even if the land is unavailable, we are still in the exact same position as if we had Emrakul.

The Painter's Stone base could work very well for this deck as a starting point:
4 Basalt Monolith
4 Mesmeric Orb
4 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Brainstorm
4 Ponder
4 Enlightened Tutor
4 Intuition
3 Mox Opal
4 Seat of the Synod
1 Island
3 Ancient Tomb
2 City of Traitors
4 Misty Rainforest
1 Polluted Delta
4 Tundra
Not trying to derail but thought there are similarities.
