Myself and my son went the the SCG Open Series event in Atlanta this weekend. Had LOTS of fun .... and there were 518 players attending. We only played in the Standard event and was forced to come home a day early due to my son not recovering well from a night of Tequila lol so we missed day 2. The deck list we both used (we used identical decks for the Standard event) is listed below and below that is the report with links to pictures etc etc. Hope the report does not put anyone to sleep haha.
Round 1: vs Mirror Match Game 1: This guy ran a build that was twice as fast as mine. He ran Lotus Cobra & Oracle of Mul Daya in addition to the normal set-up of cards. I draw my 7 and I drew 3 lands ... 2x Evolving Wilds and a single Terramorphic Expanse and at this time I did not know I was facing a mirror match and figured ... I'll draw into the deck even with the 3 starting sac lands. He came out with lightning speed and before I knew what happened we were side boarding. Game 2: I start with a Forest and a Swamp and I had 3 mana cost ramp sitting in hand and figured I would draw into more land ..... I thought wrong, he ran all over me and I never drew my 3rd land. Not doing well right now, kicking myself for losing round 1. ok so now I get my first loss out of the way and get back in my zone for round 2 thinking 1 loss could still find me top 8 if I can get my act together.
0-2 0-1
Round 2: vs RDW Game 1: He comes out really fast, he gets me down to 5 when I Slagstorm and stabilize the board. But ... the next turn he burns me out. Game 2: he comes out much the same as he did in game 1 only I Slagstorm again around T4, he burns me out 2 turns later. I am miserable now, knowing I probably have no shot at top 8, nut figure lets go till I get my 3rd loss figuring that comes next round anyways.
0-4 0-2
Round 3: vs U/B Kibler Infect
Game 1: This game goes so fast I do not really much that happened. I destroyed the guy, he was stuck on 3 lands but even if he would have drawn land he would not have stood a chance. Easy win. Game 2: This game was a little closer but was not really hard. I had the game under control the entire time, letting him beat me down to 7 poison counters because it took me a little longer to get my creatures rolling. He side boarded in a bunch of removal. I ended up burning him for 16 and then 12 the next turn for the win. Creeping Tar Pit did most of his damage.
2-4 1-2
Round 4: vs U/B Control
Game 1: The U/B Control was piloted by a female with a serious attitutde ... not a bad one, more like a "I'm not about to lose to this guy attitude" which was ok with me hehe she was a nice girl. This guy had her discarding me down to top deck mode and her killing off everything I summoned but I ended up burning her down, Slagstorm was an all star in this game.
Game 2: She boarded in Memoricide, this really sucked, she got all of my Titans and killed off most of my creatures cept for my Walls .... Acidic Slime is what won me the game, I draw all 4 either tutoring for them or just top decking then. She was still stuck at around 6 lands, 2 Creeping Tar Pit which caught land bolts, 3 non basics which caught Acidic Slime and she was left with a single Swamp when I finished burning her out. She took the loss pretty hard, nah she REALLY took that loss hard hehe.
4-4 2-2
Round 5: vs G/W Vengevine Game 1: He mulligans to 5 I am forced to go to 4 due to never drawing a single land .... amazing. I end up with 4 cards ... 1 land and some ramp. Thats the only land I draw the entire game but I play on acting like if I draw a single land I am in business so maybe I can scout his deck for game 2-3. I see a little more of his deck, appears the standard G/W style aggro deck.
Game 2: I board in Acidic Slimes for the equip's. I start slow, not drawing any ramp at all the entire game lol wow my luck today sucks. He drops a opening hand of 2x Leyline of Sanctity. I scratch my hand thinking how bad can my luck be? I end up using my land/burn to keep creatures off the table, I never saw a Kor Firewalker. I am doing pretty well, Slagstorming on 3 seperate times going 3 Slagstorms for like 11 creatures. and start beating on him with my own creatures but I just cannot finish him off with the two Leyline of Sanctity's sitting there and he gets the win.
4-6 2-3
I go ahead and drop. Round 1 I just got my ass beat, plain and simple. Round 2 I really thought I had the 2 games but ended up losing due to burn. Round 3-4 were pretty easy and the last round I just had horrid luck plus those 2 damned Leyline of Sanctity /sigh. MY son on the other hand played a mirror deck of my own, a quick report from him goes as follows .....
My Sons Report: Typed word for word how he told me to type this
Round 1: vs G/W Valakut Hate Deck
Game 1: I was quite surprised seeing myself get milled to death by a Sword of Body and Mind. I lose Game 2: This game I came out pretty good with T5 Titan and T6 Titan which = win
Game 3: He had milled me enough that by the time I got my Titan out that I was only able to get two Valakut triggers off. Most were milled to the GY. I Cultivated and hit again next turn with my Titan trying to get all the lands I could and thin my deck in hopes that he would mill my Eldrazi because I had 15 cards left in my library. He did catch the Eldrazi, and so I killed him next turn with Valakut triggers.
1-0
Round 3: vs Mono Green Eldrazi
Game 1: I won because of two T5 Titans. T2 Overgrown Battlement and cast two Zeniths to grab the other two and had a crap ton of mana. Game 2: he had casted an Emrakul .... it hurt. Game 3: He mulliganed to 5 and preceeded to die. He was upset.
2-0
Round 3: vs RUG Control at the top table
Game 1: I got 2x Overgrown Battlements out but he T4 Frost Titan and I didnt get the mana to get our a Primeval Titan till it was too late and I was dead next turn anyways from his Titan. Game 2: I didnt draw a green mana and I am dumb and don't know how to mulligan /cry
2-1
Round 4: vs Valakut
Game 1: He mulligan to 5 and with 1 land but drew land #2 on T2 and then wrecked me hard. He Titan'd first and won. Game 2: he Titans first and wins due to running Lotus Cobra.
2-2
Round 5: vs GWB Junk
Game 1: He got mad when I called his deck Junk, he was like wtf? its not Junk, and I am like no dude, thats the title of the deck, he did not know that lol. I win easily. Game 2: Same as game 1 I win easy.
3-2
Round 6 vs U/B Infect
Game 1: He starts off normally, discarding me etc etc but I draw my ramp and kill him anyways. Slagstorm = win. He did have Ratchet Bomb maindeck, this slowed my Walls down. He made sure I missed a trigger on my Kalni Heart though. Game 2: I get a good start, he discards me around T3 and took Ramp spell. he got me to around 7 counters but even though he had two Tumble Magnets and I only had an Inferno Titan and a Primeval Titan while he had his 2 Magnets, Ratchet Bomb and a Throne of Geth, he got to 6 counters on Ratchet Bomb to kill off my Titans but I followed up with another Titan and Valakut'd him down to 3 and finished with Slagstorm and won. he was sad.
4-2
Round 7: vs Mirror
Game 1 and Game 2: I am ashamed to say how bad I got my ass beat both games /sigh PS: Lotus Cobra is awesome.
4-3 I drop
Anyways there ya have it, oh and below are some pictures I took along with a short video I put together of the Event, it's nothing special but maybe you guys enjoy. had a blast, can't wait for the middle of next month when SCG hits Orlando Florida. I will be better prepared for the Meta then.
PS: Me or my son didn't face a single Caw-Blade deck today /sigh
I think what ruined my day was I accidently bought a Bottled Water for $3:75 lol I told the lady, yea lemme get a Water please and I hand her a 5. I realize I took it in the rear when she handed me back $1.25 lol wow 4 bucks for a water?
Probably the best advice I can give is 'always' bring your own drinks/snacks to an event like that. The vendors outside are shoddy, overpriced, and people will in fact, pay/trade if you bring extras in a cooler or something. A friend hid a cooler full of drinks behind a banner at Kansas City and was the life of the party all day.
Other than that, sorry about the bad beats, and hope you both had fun.

I actually was not thinking at the time, I asked for the water and just pulled a 5 out before they said the price, it stunned me when I got my change back lol. lesson learned for sure.
Isn't the main idea to have fun and gather experience both personal and for the deck?
Just curious...
Looked like a fun event.
It was late, we were hungry and tired from the drive the day before so we headed back to the hotel and chilled till Sunday arrived. I dropped to go browse the stuff for sale, take more videos, watch the top ranked players play in the feature matches so even when I dropped, I still had some fun. Orlando comes next month, I plan to be there with some secret tech
I wanted to go to the ATL event but I completely forgot about it. I shall be in Orlando with my Valakut deck next month. Thanks to you, I will remember to bring a cooler.

you are welcome
being serious .... I will not bring my Valakut to Orlando, simply because it is just to heavily played. Mirror matches suck bad. I will be working hard on my Kibler Infect deck, if I cannot get that to working I will take my G/W Aggro - it kills Valakut and Caw-Blade pretty well and those two decks are like 45% "give or take a few %" of the field.
Actually, the downside to G/W and Naya midrange builds is that they have a heavy weakness to Valakut specifically. They're also 50/50 with other faster aggro decks in the field at the moment.

Looks like you guys had a lot of fun! I'm looking forward to attending a SCG event soon.
Me and my son have been out of the game for 6 years or so, we recently returned last December and went to the Atlanta tcgplayer tourny and did pretty well. This one I mis judged the meta really bad and took the wrong deck for this event BUT we had a blast the entire time.
What do you guys think of r/b vampires as a choice for the event?
hmm I dunno, I did not see a Vamp deck of any kind the entire day and I really have never been a big fan of the deck so I am not sure what to say on that.
Also: How did the lack of lotus cobra work out for you? It seems like an auto-include to me, although I have not played valakut.
It came back and bit me in the ass especially vs the Mirror match, same with my son, he played my same deck and the mirror he had, not having it caused him to lose. Valakut really did not do well at all for anyone at that event, one solo Valakut snuck into the top 8, probably through favorable matchups but overall there was a sea of Valakuts, so the Mirror match prolly caused many to drop. Most decks ran much hate for Valakut sideboard, plus Tectonic Edges were in most decks, it really sucked for me.
I remember walking into the tournament area and my son made a joke, remember dad, just play land .... and win. I remember laughing but in the end our mirrors played land and won faster than we did

There were quite a few Twitter updates of the better players getting knocked out of the top tables by Vamps, so it was probably a reasonable choice. I play Vamps online and the inclusion of Hexmages, Inquisitions, and the right sideboard certainly helps.

Thats odd, because I did not see any of those decks there, ahh well maybe I just missed them. I wonder what Gerry Thompson lost to that knocked him out of the tourny.
