It's time to become more focused on making a set. Meaning, we need a theme. I liked the library theme, but we should have a new one at least for now to make our ideas fresh. Any suggestions?

APPLICATION POLICY: Anyone who wants to join R&D does not have to PM me. All you have to do is post in the current clan thread that you want to join, and post two or more cards that you have designed. If you do, you will be automatically accepted unless there are reasons concerning you that do not have something to do with card creation.
I repeat, R&D has an open door policy. If there are too many members, I will call for a check in and anyone who doesn't respond within a certain amount of time will be moved down to a friend. If there are too many active members, there will be no more applications, but that will only happen if and when I say so. So until I explicitly post that no more applications are being considered, anyone is welcome to join.
So, any ideas for themes? We could do flavor, or a game zone, or something that hasn't been a theme yet. Like a color. Let's make a blue block! With each color having more blue type effects, so the game plays like blue decks against each other no matter what colors you play, while still having color differences and a feel for each color.
I really, really don't like the idea of a certain colour block, I think each colour should be equal, but that's my opinion, and I do love designing blue cards...
The first thing I'd say would be multicoloured, but with Ravnica just out I reckon that's a little boring.
Game zones: Well there's library, hand, graveyard, in play, removed-from-game, and phased out. Library was the theme of Jupiter, hand has been done in Saviors of Kamigawa, graveyard was the whole Odyssey block, in play is like every set that was ever made, and the last two are two narrow. Hey, let's bring back phasing!
Actually, I think a flavour themed block would be cool, with lots of legends (not so that it mimicks Kamigawa though). We'll se what other people think.

Decided to drop in and see if I'm still a friend - and yup there I am.
Anyways, on topic, I've always had Invasion as my favorite block personally. Of course it was the first block I've actually played so it'll always be near and dear to me. Plus it was fun in ways the newest blocks haven't been.
Don't forget about resource based themes (like life total, lands available, cards in play, etc) either everyone. I've seen people try but I dunno their success rates. Just thought I'd try to suggest something useful.
I liked alot of different sets, but not really blocks. I love ravnica with a fiery passion, but I also liked invasion, legions, saga and legends. Lol, i like creatures:glee:
To clarify, Guildpact is indeed an Overclan. I guess its to represent and possibly act out the Rav block storyline. As for Gaymers, well that's something different as far as I can tell.
As a small aside, I could've sworn that not too long ago the Casual[T]ies were also an exception to the rules since it was a DBG but after checking the rules/FAQ I see that's changed...
Woo!! I'm back people! I went to Momocon, an anime/comic convention in Atlanta this weekend and boy do I have lots of swag! Awesome prints, comics, and cool cool stuff. I'll dive back into this as soon as I get settled
Thanks to the guys at Wake Walking for taking me (Josh is my brother-in-law)

Well, this explains why I haven't been recieving R&D updates recently... Hey guys, I'm here too, and on the list. However, being that I'm only 22 cards away from Sanctuary's blue completion, I've been focusing on that one.
@Spangle: Should you be recruiting, I'm up for it.
@Alabran: You're alive! Haven't seen you around in a while.
@Eledin: Come on, we threw around SO many ideas before we got into the subjects of the FCC. We had an Aztec or Ancient Central American theme going, or that's what I thought. We had an enchantment themed set with a blood magic mechanic for Black and Red and a mechanic for the other three and slightly in Red that involved a spell copying itself based on the number of creatures you controlled. We had a host of other ideas as well, I for one was hoping for a mechanic related to the enchantments or maybe even auras in play.
Just out of curiosity: DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT??? Or has this entire idea been scrapped and the entire brainstorming session been forgotten?
Just wondering :-p
Actually, at Eledin, I remember asking if you wanted to distribute roles based on the possible ways we could organize the development of the set. I don't recall you ever deciding how we should go about it.
If no one has any idea what I'm talking about, I CAN sight the pages in which these things happened. Anyone need me to?
@Our local Havoc bringer: I once was a senator in Azorius. Eventually I had to choose between R&D and Azorius. I decided that R&D was much more important to me, so I decided to drop Azorius. They did seem disappointed to see me go, and I do randomly pop in as a friend. R&D is fun, but as you can see above, I find it frustrating when people don't keep up with what's going on. So, you'd have to pick. You can still be a friend of whichever one you don't want to be in, and I'm sure randomly chiming in with ideas if you're a friend isn't exactly frowned upon either. We appear to be fairly casual about ideas being thrown out there.
I hear ya, Arguas. I hear ya. We need more guidance! We need to make a concrete decision! We need.. a leader. Or something
EDIT: Yes, lots of swag. Plushies of a few anime characters and a lot of Final Fantasy/Zelda/Anime artworks and a few other things like mangas. And t-shirts! I'll have a list up soon
Sorry aabout that, Alabran. I guess I just forgot to add you to the list when you joined.
@Arguas, and everybody I guess: This clan is not the most organized or active clans on the boards, and it never has been. That has been the feel of the clan almost the entire time, except for a week or two of action when we started Jupiter. If anybody wants a different kind of clan, that person is more than welcome to do anything to make R&D a clan where everyone is more active. I unfortunately can't be on as much as I was when I started the clan--I have SAT's and AP exams coming up, as I'm nearing the end of 11th grade, so there's a lot of work from school.
However, if Arguas, Spanglegluppet, Shadowfox, Alacar, or anybody else wants to create more focus on making a set or block, any one of them can begin work on it without me. You can do whatever you need to to start the set on this thread, and then we can continue either here, on the Custom Cards forum, or on our own site like we had before.
@Shadowfox: Interesting idea, and some are great, like the black and green ones. The white one is alright, but the red and blue ones pretty much say that you can play an instant or sorcery free each turn. I see how you need them for the cycle, but they seem less cool that the others. Also, they can be abused. How about a turn four Lavamancer's Initiation, and then a Time Stretch for free right then? I think that's game.
And about an enchantment themed block: I don't personally like enchantments all that much, but if we can make it work it should be fun.

Well, with that, I think we should take Eledin's advice and start work on this block without him. In that case, I elect that the more frequent members of the clan take the head.
Now, I know he's busy juggling a lot, but Spangelgluppet has proven his worth as a card designer (and overall thread manager), so he would be a great head of R&D (next to Eledin, of course, but for purposes of the block). Also, with his set rounding out nicely, Arguas is an excellent development manager. (structuring the set and all, etc.)
And, I hate to put myself up on a pedestal, but hey.. I did make a set on my own, ya know. Just click my banner. I elect myself as the head of design. (Mark Rosewater's job, before he became head of R&D himself) Eh? Too egotistical?
I'm sure there are plenty of other valuable members of R&D, and lots of other roles need to be filled (Lord Moo for head of flavor?). But hey, I'm just making a suggestion.
Well from what I've seen of your work Shadow, you're a good card designer. That Tellus Guardian is awesome, whether it's with your template or mine.
Oh yeah,
Quote from Shadowfox »
Anyways, what are everyone's favourite blocks/sets? If we're going to bring something back, lets bring back something popular...
My favorite set is Ice Age. And that's getting Coldsnap. So, yeah.. I do loves me them gold cards, though.
I'm slightly disappointed with the route they went with the UB guild. To me, it wasn't so much as blue tricks/black powerhouse as blue mill/black drain. I'm not against miller cards, but hey, where's Diabolic Vision?
I'd love to help design a set, although one has to bear in mind most of my free time is revolving around how Sanctuaries is finally finishing coming together. Turns out as I use these templates that I need to finish up a few cards for each of the colors at this point, although Blue still has the most, and it is still what I'm using Salvation for on a strict basis.
Anyway, if the position is agreed upon from me, then I think I could be more than willing to be a development manager for this set. I mean, it appears that how I structured Sanctuaries worked, and with these people it can come together.
If that is the case, I'd elect option #1 I had before in the previous thread. I'll post idea in the edit, I need to go find it. In any case, what this means is that each of the heads of the set will also be lead developer for a specific color. Should this happen, what color would each of top 5 contributors (Myself, Spangle, Alacar, Shadowfox, and maybe Lord Moo) like to lead? Of course, if we pick option 1 then everyone can still contribute to every color, it's just these people lead them
EDIT: Here is the post I was talking about.
Additionally, I'd look around the nearby posts for a general feel for the current ideas on set development.
I recommend the first option, but we keep Lord Moo and people more connected with flavor and storyline more connected with design.
Also, my favorite color happens to be blue, but I'm sure we'll all contribute to everything else.
@Shadow, to be honest, I don't think we all quite know a great deal about where we're going yet, but being a creative designer should be all you really need, as well as being willing to be dedicated to building the set. It pretty much means you'd be responsible for bringing the color together. Of course we could all contribute, especially with cycle ideas.
Which reminds me, set leader... I nominate Spangle to be responsible for "gluing" the set together, keeping track of card cycles, and getting the memos out to everyone with such ideas, and to make sure that the cards come together correctly.
One more note: If we go with color leaders, my favorite color is White. Which means that, so far, if Fox is willing to take leadership, I would be White leader, Fox is Green, and Alacar is Blue. This leaves Red and Black (The blood magic people).
