The Planeswalker Koth, from the metal plane of Mirrodin, sought help when his world darkened. He traveled to Dominaria to enlist allies and met fellow Planeswalker Venser.
When Venser recognized the threat to Koth's world was none other than Phyrexia, he knew that the only hope for Mirrodin was to find its maker. But that would mean forsaking its people in the meantime.
Koth would rather die than turn his back on his fellow Mirrans. But Venser all but knew they would die anyway if they failed to reach Karn, his former mentor and creator of Mirrodin.
Two Planeswalkers, one goal, very different methods. Recreate the struggle to lead the way to Mirrodin’s salvation.

Quote from DailyMTG.com »
You might have noticed that we've been alternating "faction vs. faction" Duel Decks (Phyrexia vs. the Coalition, Divine vs. Demonic, etc.) early in the year and "Planeswalker vs. Planeswalker" Duel Decks (Elspeth vs. Tezzeret, Jace vs. Chandra, etc.) somewhere around the release of the October large set.
With Duel Decks: Ajani vs. Bolas coming out on September 2, Koth vs. Venser will make two Planeswalker-focused Duel Decks in a row. Why? Because we think the faction-vs.-faction Duel Decks will be more interesting if we can tie them in to the large set that comes out late in the year. For example, Duel Decks: Phyrexia vs. the Coalition came out in March 2010, seven months before Phyrexia showed up in Scars of Mirrodin. If we move it to October, it gets much more compelling!
So! For 2012 (and possibly beyond), we're going to release a Planeswalker Duel Deck early in the year and a faction Duel Deck later in the year that's better placed to tie in with the October large set release.
I am VERY excited for this, as Venser is my favorite M:TG character of Recent, and Koth...is Red. And Red is fun as hell. Not liking Red in any way shape or form is like not liking pie: Wrong(Unless you are highly allergic)

Currently Getting Back into the swing of MTGS. Bear with me folks~
Holy hell... the arts look TERRIBLE! Venser is holding two sperm and Koth is going to fall off a cliff. Good job guys Also it seems kinda weird for these two to be fighting. Granted they have different ideals their goal is still the same. Also March 2012? Why so far? December would have been nice... or hell October. They would make SO much bank.
Koth is appearing randomly in top RDW decks and Venser is also that dude with potential for shenanigans.

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.
Other than the fact that Timothy Olyphant is now modeling for Planeswalker cards this is far from interesting. It feels like they could have ended it with Elepth/Tezz and said, "that was a fun product, now lets do something new."
Apparently, next October will feature another Faction vs Faction Duel Deck, to tie in to the next block.
That means it's two existing factions... Guilds?
The guildpact was dissolved at the end of Dissension. There are no guilds with which to create a duel deck. I suppose they could revisit pre-dissension Ravnica, but that's about it.

With rumors of a return to Ravnica next year, it seems possible that there will be at least a partial retcon.
This is sweet should drive the prices of both card down. I love the venser art and he it is smexy!!! Deschamps did the Venser it looks like but who did the Koth?
I like how they do this stuff,it makes planeswalkers a lot easier to get.hopefully this releases before a few months before scars rotates out.It seems like all of them are released right after they rotate or just before :/ .

Unlikely, seeing how the fall of the guilds was specifically dictated to the author of a post-Mending novel. It's not a case of the block ending that way during a previous Creative "regime" and they need different circumstances to set up a new story, they specifically changed the status quo of the plane as part of the whole rebranding and storyline cleanup. There's a fundamental difference, there.
Weird. I never knew that they fought each other...
So, I guess they're going to continue the trend of making certain planeswalkers more available right before they rotate out of standard.
Koth looks like he's about to jump off a cliff.

This is one I'm going to have a hard time not skipping.
Yeah it would be fun to have Koth (0 right now) but venser is just not my style and not worth the price of the duel decks.
If we do get a Guild(s) Vs Guild(s) duel deck then that will be strong evidence to help the revisit theory. If it however has nothing to do with Ravnica then I think we can put that rumor to rest.

Gets released in March of next year. So 8 months or so of playing with them before standard kicks in? Not too bad unlike the Vampire Event deck where 90% of the stuff is going to get rotated out in a month or two.

I like the original Venser art the best, but I love that new Koth art! This makes me happy either way. I'll finally be able to get my playset of Koths again and I can always use more Vensers.
Don't these msrp at 19.99 at walmart? I could actually afford some planeswalkers that are decent? Huh. Koth sits at over 20 right now at 15ish. Granted they'll probably rotate out of standard quickly, koth is great for cube even then. Interesting. (spoiling already? seems weird since avn isn't even released).

So then what do you suppose the two Factions could be?
Shouldn't the set be called, if it's Venser and Koth facing the world of Scars, duel decks: Venser and Koth? They don't want to stop each other, thy're allies for god sake. It's not a duel deck, it's the duet deck they were making fun of an April fools day ago. Except instead of love, it's a buddy cop movie.
My initial reaction to this was, and I quote: "what."
After thinking about it for a minute, though, I think this could be fun. I liked Elspeth vs. Tezzeret (the first Duel Deck I was around for), and think WU v. R would be an interesting match-up. Aggro/Mountain-themed cards vs. cards with ETB effects? Gotta be. I'll be picking up one.
Also find it interesting that both of these will still be in Standard upon release. I'd thought they'd gone with a rotated planeswalker motif. I suppose they'd kinda run out of interesting match-ups for non-Standard planeswalkers, though, but I think "Duel Deck: Nissa Revane vs. Sarkhan the Mad" would have made just as much sense as Venser vs. Koth.
Now this is something I will definitely have to buy, Venser is my favorite planeswalker, and if we can have another venser appearance since after his death. I am taking it! I'll just play with koth in other ways.

I'm not one for art but that Venser art is freaking sweet.
I'm just hoping it won't be as one-sided as Elspeth v Tezzeret.

According to the novels, the guild system as we knew it is destroyed and gone.
We might see some sort of factions we've yet to hear about or imagine.
With rumors of a return to Ravnica next year, it seems possible that there will be at least a partial retcon.
Unless the Duel Deck is composed mostly of new cards, I rather doubt that.
