This thread is to be dedicated to the Necrotic Ooze combo of infinite +1/+1 counters and beating through unblockable with the ooze.
Combo:
#2
The second combo and the one that I personally will be focusing more on after I release V3.0 of this list will be the Grimgrin + Keeper combo to create infinite +1/+1's.
It is very simple:
1. Create a vampire
2. Sac and untap
3. Repeat as needed
The other part is making it unblockable via Trespassing Souleater to just wreck face in one turn.
Viability:
So your wondering how a deck like this can be viable? Well innistrad gives us a lot of good cards to throw other cards into the graveyard. Nonetheless they almost reprinted one of the best blue dig spells ever, but it still is one of the best blue dig spells in standard right now. We scry 4 and dump 3. Cool beans for us!
The lists:
Currently we will be discussing off any list posted. Although my most succesful list will be the latest version.
This version is the fast version. Using control like spells to keep enemies at bay for mirror matches or to just plain old stop shenanigans. Personally this list is the 5 turn win list. I have done it twice and it is very consistent at throwing the pieces into the GY succesfully. (Note: I've only played three games w/ this list and all against different decks)
V4.0
This is a list inspired by Patrick Chapin who is the excellent Johnny of them all. If he can build it, then it most be right. (I idolize Chapin obviously since hes created every combo I create)
All creatures with activated abilities:
Credit: JarethVarant (GREAT JOB MAN!)
Abuna Acolyte – 1/10 Just useless all around. Alabaster Mage – 6/10 Helps turn an infinite swing into that much life, but not amazingly great. Arbalest Elite – 2/10 If you wouldn’t play the card, would you use it with the ooze? Avacynian Priest – 2/10 Gideon’s Lawkeeper is better, and you wouldn’t play it would you? Gideon’s Lawkeeper – 3/10 Better than the above card, but still not good enough. Gore Vassal – 3/10 Fume Spitter is better, and in the same color as the ooze to boot. Mikaeus, the Lunarch – 7/10 This guy isn’t that great, but the ooze can’t eat a doom blade. Salvage Scout – 1/10 Does this actually DO anything? Selfless Cathar – 2/10 I don’t like sacrificing the ooze unless it wins me the game or saves me a loss. Silverchase Fox – 3/10 Until an enchantment is killing you, don’t play this.
Alluring Siren – 1/10 Doesn’t Gideon do this better? Argent Sphinx – 4/10 It does blink, but it need metalcraft. Azure Mage – 6/10 Drawing cards is good. Civilized Scholar – 9/10 Can dig REALLY deep and fuel combos. Deranged Assistant – 4/10 Can help fuel bigger spells and get combo pieces into the grave. Djinn of Wishes – 0/10 USELESS WITHOUT WISH COUNTERS! Grand Architect – 3/10 Only good in mono blue. Jace’s Archivist – 7/10 Good at dumping combo pieces and refueling hands against aggro. Lantern Spirit – 4/10 Defends the ooze, but then makes it susceptible to counterspells. Ludevic’s Test Subject – 0/10 Useless. Merfolk Looter – 7/10 Works well to put combo pieces in the graveyard. Merfolk Mesmerist – 3/10 Mills combo pieces, but doesn’t provide card advantage. Mindshrieker – 6/10 Does help with milling combo pieces, and can allow you to win the game on its own. Mirror-Mad Phantasm – 5/10 Very risky, but can mill your entire library when used correctly. Stitcher’s Apprentice – 3/10 Apprentice is a limited card, so not really useful in constructed. Vedalken Anatomist – 3/10 Same as the above card. Vedalken Certarch – 2/10 Not that good because it requires metalcraft. Viral Drake – You shouldn’t need to proliferate with the ooze.
Bloodline Keeper – 10/10 Very powerful combo effect. Carnifex Demon – 3/10 You’ll normally have +1/+1 counters, not -1/-1. Cemetery Reaper – 2/10 You want to put creatures in the graveyard, not take them out. Corrupted Harvester – 1/10 There are much better regeneration effects. Dementia Bat – 1/10 There are better reasons to sacrifice an ooze. Devouring Swarm – 1/10 Sacrificing a creature should fuel a combo, not give a small boost. Disciple of Griselbrand – 0/10 This card is bad. Drifting Shade – 3/10 Shade pump is only good in certain situations. Dross Hopper – 2/10 There are much better ways to get flying. Flesh-Eater Imp – 1/10 Same as Devouring Swarm. Fume Spitter – 4/10 Sometimes, you just have to cast a 4-mana Fume Spitter. Geth, Lord of the Vault – 5/10 Can be good at getting your opponent’s creatures in the grave, then back on the board. Manor Skeleton – 4/10 Regeneration is always good. Onyx Mage – 4/10 Deathtouch is a powerful ability. Reassembling Skeleton - -10/10 THIS DOESN’T WORK! Royal Assassin – 5/10 Reusable kill effects are never terrible. Skirsdag High Priest – 6/10 Ooze can be a more durable version of this guy, but he still isn’t making a great effect. Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon – 10/10 Haste AND regeneration on one card? ‘Nuff said. Toxic Nim – 4/10 Regeneration is good, but the guy it’s on isn’t.
Barrage Ogre – 2/10 Sacrificing an artifact is the real problem here. Bloodshot Trainee – 5/10 Automatically turns this ability on. Crimson Mage – 4/10 A reliable way to get haste. Fallen Ferromancer – 1/10 There are free ways to ping. Feral Ridgewolf – 3/10 Shade pump is better than this. Ferrovore – 2/10 Sacrificing an artifact is still bad. Fiery Hellhound – 2/10 Shade pump is better than firebreathing. Gnathosaur – 1/10 Sacrificing an artifact… Goblin Bangchuckers – 0/10 There are still better effects to ping. Goblin Fireslinger – 3/10 A ping effect that hit creatures too would be better. Goblin Tunneler – 0/10 Useless. Grim Lavamancer – 5/10 Decent, but still takes away your creatures. Hellkite Igniter – 3/10 Has to be played with many artifacts. Hoard-Smelter Dragon – 5/10 Better if artifacts are killing you. Inferno Titan – 3/10 A good card, but shade pump is still better. Kessig Wolf – 3/10 First Strike is good, but it doesn’t always win games. Kuldotha Phoenix - -10/10 Doesn’t work the way you’d think it would. Moltensteel Dragon – 3/10 OK because you can pay life as well as mana. Ogre Menial – 2/10 Bad card with decent effect. Oxiddia Scrapmelter – 2/10 There are better ways to get haste. Skirsdag Cultist – 3/10 There are better ways to ping. Spikeshot Elder – 7/10 There aren’t very many ways to ping this well.
Bloodline Keeper + Grimgrin, Corpse-born = Infinite +1/+1 too so I would get more grim grin in there and a couple of bloodline keepers. Also consider Dissipate instead of cancel and stoic rebuttal as it's a lot better. I would get rid of mental misstep for a 4th ponder. Wouldn't 4 mindshrieker be a good idea with the fact that it's an awesome aggro creature and a mill engine?
I fergot about the keeper combo honestly X.x! My bad.. Dissipate is good, haven't been fully with it yet during deck construction. I don't want to run dual dissipitates though because of surgical extraction, but I guess it'd be okay. As for 4 mindshriekers, that means I have to remove 3 slots. There are a lot of good creatures in here that give necrotic eooze the evasiveness he needs. I'll update the list with the changes in a second.

Hows the combo work you may ask? It works like this:
Palladium Myr, Grimgrin, Corpse-Born, Pentavus in the yard, Ooze on the field with another creature. You go like this then: Tap necrotic ooze for two mana, sac the creature untap for grimgrin, tap for mana, make a pentavite sac it and untap for a +1/+1 and repeat. Nets 1 every time. Which is amazing.
I'm lost on how this works. You're saying you have only ooze in play? If you tap ooze for 2 mana you can not then untap ooze off grimgrin when it's your only creature. you can tap ooze to make a pentavite and untap ooze with grimgrin sacrificing the pentavite but then you never get to tap for two mana. You see what I'm saying?

I think you misread it. Ooze on the field with another creature.
Edit: The abilities Ooze would gain for clarification sake is this:
Tap: Add 2 to your mana pool
Sacrifice a creature: Untap ~ and put a +1/+1 counter on ~ 2: Mill 2 cards ... 1: Remove a +1/+1 counter from ~ and put a 1/1 pentivite into play.
Your netting 1 every time. Mindshriker is the 2 as the final.
Jus the little combo's in this deck are cool too. Civilized Scholar gives it Tap: Draw a card discard a card, Lantern gives U: Return ~ to your hand. I mean the deck is full of little combos that work.
would Zombie Infestation be good in this deck to discard the combo pieces and make creatures for you to sac?
If you couldn't afford/found a way to abuse Zombie Infestation then go for it. Its just that dumping two cards for a sac may cause you to discard answer cards. Which could be bad, but I guess it also cycles dead draws into CA/BA...Idk it jus seems mediocre to me. But its definately something to consider for a budget version of the list.

I dont see the cackling Counterpart, Ponder, or Mental Misstep working very well. You will likely want a lot of creatures in the deck so you can sift faster with Civilized+Ooze. I would add Think Twice in over ponder. If you want the creature copying from Counterpart why not use Propagator Myr. In regards to Skithiryx, my assumption is you want him for regeneration. I would put Molten-Tail Masticore over him. You still get the regen but you also can throw duplicate creatures at your opponent. Also do not forget about Jace's Archivist. That is another way to quickly fill up your graveyard.
Think twice is a terrible card! Why pay 5 when I can pay 1 for better effects?
Cackling Counterpart is an evasive manuever card. I use it primarily to get past spot removal via dismember on my ooze or to fuel the combo. The other thing your missing is that I have strong card choices as it. Jace's archivist is bad for one reason, it gives your opponent more/new cards that could possibly deal with the combo. We don't want that. We also do not want propagator because we can't use snapcaster on that card, it can only be ooze'd. Molten-Tail Masticore is so-so but I don't like exiling cards from my yard very well. It just seems that we have different views on this but I'm pretty set on saying NO to Think Twice and Propagator Myr, Molten-Tail Masticore may get play tested. But I feel skittles is better for the B: ~ has haste effect.

Disentomb should really be Postmortem Lunge. If you have your combo pieces and an Ooze in the yard, Lunge lets you win immediately because the Ooze has haste. With Disentomb you have to untap with it. We don't care about the reanimated Ooze being exiled at the end of the turn - the game won't last that long!
@ Lambent, I guess that is a lot better from the way you explain it and probably will add it to the list over disentomb!
@Muave: Necrotic Ooze only picks up Activated abilities not trigger/static abilities such as boneyard wurm, goblin arsonist, lotus cobra, or Suture Priest. The activiated abilities all have XYZ: ABCDEFG (activated by the :), versus Whenever XYZ, or When this XYZ, ~ gets +1/+1. Those are tiggered/static.

The deck has so many one-of creatures (because most of these creatures are creatures you wouldn't even want in hand/multiples of), that it seems like trying to assemble the combo the old-fashioned way would be slow and inconsistent. I think it would be an interesting approach to play cards like Dream Twist, Forbidden Alchemy, and Mulch to mill the cards in your library, then use a card like Unburial Rites or Postmortem Lunge to bring back a Necrotic Ooze to combo out.
Lathia, nice job presenting this shell! I'm sure all the johnnies appreciate your work
Couple of things i've discovered while reading:
-4x alchemy seems like an obvious must. its by far the best draw spell for the deck.
-Its a combo deck, and you have to think about ways to protect your combo instead of interacting with your opponent. IE: gftt and dismember seem really bad in the deck. I would rather have cards like Apostle's blessing to protect my ooze from dying.
-More combo pieces. I'd rather be playing 2x of all my combo pieces in order to achieve optimal draw probability (or discard that is) I also think the scholar/ooze filter is quite awesome. VERY cool. But you'll need to cut spells and add creatures in order for it to really take hold. W/out a doubt I'd play 4x scholar. (at worst he filters once/twice and beats then goes into the GY for ur ooze)
-Take out useless creatures. Lantern spirit seems too cute and doesn't do anything for the deck. Bounce the ooze? Why? Your slowing the deck down, play spells that protect ooze instead.
Props to skittles! He makes the deck a 1 turn combo deck. Gj!
All in all, the shell is there, and the combo isn't too lose to compete with current Decklists. My biggest suggestion is to remind urself that you are playing combo, and its not like valakut where it had a beatdown plan if the valakuts didn't work out, but rather an I WIN THiS TURN and there's nothing you can do about it! Thats the kind of deck I'd like to see this turn into!
1) Tap Necrotic Ooze (using Bloodline Keeper's ability) to put a Vampire token into play
2) Sacrifice the Vampire token (using Grimgrin's ability) to untap Necrotic Ooze and put a +1/+1 counter on it.
3) Go to step 1
If you have something that interacts with creatures entering the board, you get infinite activations with it. Even if you don't, you get an untapped Necrotic Ooze with an arbitrarily large number of +1/+1 counters on it.
About Cackling Counterpart, if its a back-up plan to denials, wouldn't counters like Turn Aside be more mana efficient? I understand it does provide a body to sac for the grimgrin ability, but I think its too mana intensive.
This is the new list with all the suggestions. I eliminated extra removal and extra cute creatures. added in a draw filter as strongest part of combo. It seems a lot more solid!
Edit: Cackling Counterpart helps a lot. I mainly use it to enable the combo to set it off or to double snapcaster flash.

If you use the ooze/civilized scholor to discard a creature card, do you get to 'transform'?
No, because ooze is not a DFC, it loses the ability to transform which allows you to keep tap drawing.
Edit: It also can't fulfill the requirement of the transform clause because it transforms into a magic back. IF it was moprh it'd be different.
