WotC sure is dedicated to, "The finest player experience possible," aren't they?
No Player Rewards, no Prerelease Drafting, Planeswalker Points, no pins, less promo support, christ. It's not like they're going broke or anything, they earn hundreds off every box sold.
Well that just bites. I'm still inordinately proud of the few I've gotten, but they can't be that expensive to make/order in bulk. This seems penny-wise/pound-foolish; yet another decision that saves a tiny amount, but cuts into players' enjoyment. Can we get confirmation from other PTQ organizers? Hopefully this is a local or short-term thing, which will be reversed.

If a box sells for less than $100 how exactly do they make hundreds of dollars?

My bad, didn't mean box. Don't remember what stores called it. For the sake of appeasing nitpickers, they're still making at least $50 off a what, $99 box? It's like a penny to print 20-30 cards, and maybe a few dollars total on shipping for the box. It's not like they're bleeding here; they're selling paper.

The overheads are in game design, marketing and other personnel related expenses. Not in the actual product. Anyway, that's not what this thread is about.
Wouldn't surprise me if this is a decision on Hasbro's part. I collect Star Wars figures, which are also made by Hasbro, and over the past few years they really started to cheap out on those, so it wouldn't surprise me to see them doing the same thing with Magic.
How much does it really cost a corporation like Hasbro/Wizards to make those pins? It was a great thing and most people pinned them on their play mats to show off their "magic e-peen".
Push comes to shove, just make a generic one that simply says Top 8 PTQ.

Agreed. Taken separately, they could just be seen as cost cutting measures, but taken as a whole, does this mean Magic is on the way out? Or maybe it will get support in the future? I'm not trying to go apocalyptic over some pins, but these somewhat random events are becoming a disturbing pattern.
Magic is more profitable for them than ever before. (the fact that M10/Zen sold more than any sets ever!)
It's more likely that hasbro is being all cheap because they're a greedy company :/
Oh well, that's life.
As asked earlier what exactly are top 8 pins?

Obviously the creators of the game are trying to destroy it, I don't see how there can be any question about this. They must be shortselling Hasbro stock. Nothing else makes any sense whatsoever.
Double-faced cards? That's fine.
I don't get premium cards just for playing anymore? That's fine, it's a recession.
Wizards can't shell out the cash for something that looks like it came out of a gumball machine? W...T....F.
What really gets me is that they could just as easily make this back, heck they could profit on the pins by just making it a requirement that the people running PTQ's buy them! Tack a $50 fee onto the startup costs of running a large event for "materials" and people are still lining up to host them.
He also added that Wizards had asked him not to tell anyone before the tournament, which he obviously disregarded.
This is what disturbs me the most.
If they want to stop giving out a prize, that's one thing. But telling TOs to be deceptive about it is an entirely different, and far more serious, matter. That's definitely a shady business practice and could be worse if the pins were advertised.
Or maybe Wizards decided from a poll of some sort that people were not that enthusiastic about pins. I've gotten a couple for working at my job, and I'm like... couldn't you just give me the money you used to make this instead? Granted I'm sure it's only a few bucks if even, but a pin for working X years at the company is all I get? I'm sure the sentiment of having won a pin for top 8-ing could shift in my direction.
What the hell?
You guys are upset that you don't get Pokemon badges to prove that you were in a top 8? If anything, that's a good thing, Wizards is killing off the rich get richer type of attitude to Magic, which is awesome.

Because Pokemon badges (Top 8 Pins) are what fuel said "rich get richer" attitude. To be honest, I lost all motivation to try and top 8 at pro tours when they made this announcement.

I'm not sure what you're implying. Having physical proof that you're good enough at Magic to make a Top 8 is just a way to feel vindicated for the time spent becoming good enough to do so (in much the same way that people have shirts for, say, staying sober X amount of time or having done the NYC Marathon). It's a pin declaring an accomplishment, shouldn't that be rewarded? Or are you suggesting we discard all trappings of vanity?
All pins are for is showboating, nothing more. Unfortunately most of the people I've seen with pins are also the ones with the biggest attitude problems. This may be an isolated (at least 10 times) incident, but personally I don't care for them.
As far as I've seen the pin promotion is non existent outside of North America.
Also In Philly only one of my opponents had some of these on his playmat, he was easily the least skilled opponent I had all tournament (except Jesse Hampton lol, no I'm joking, he did good). This is probably because at the higher level events nobody cares how many PTQs you have topped.
If this means more promo/free cards available to non NA areas awesome.

[center]The best combo in Modern is now unbanned, yay!!!
It was something specific to some countries. I got top 8 pins in a PTQ in England, but never in France or Belgium.
It would have been cool to get this extended to all around the world, but one more time, this topic is esssentialy americans complaining about the disparition of one of their privileges, and none of those egoists gave a **** that most of the world didn't share it.
Yes, I'm sorry that America has a far bigger share of the world's Magic card sales and that Wizards chose to inflate our importance because of it.
But that's not actually the problem. The problem is that Wizards has decided to cut a negligible cost that makes competitive players upset, which should be seen as an affront to competitive Magic no matter what country or what level of 'privilege'; I would be just as upset to hear about this happening in, say, England or Belgium as in America.

What is a top 8 pin? Knock-out rounds? I'm not familiar with that terminology?

I have never heard about PTQ top 8 pin before. I only received some boosters for PTQ Philadelphia Top 8 earlier this year.
I guess I will just have to tell people and hope they believe me.
