nd if thatβs not enough Modern for you, the Pro Tour Qualifier season that starts in January (feeding the second Pro Tour of 2012) will also be Modern.
So, you mean Salvation users all over the place will burn their computers in attempt to prevent the forums from collapsing, and eventually, one of you will sacrifice himself and change the nature of the internet forever?
At least with extended, people had the cards. 'Tis a sad day.
Many more people have modern cards than you think... heck many of the staples like Goyf people had because of Legacy. That and there was a huge wave of new players during Mirrodin and Ravnica... some of those players still have their collections.
At least it's not Legacy... where manabases will be out of control. Shocklands have only just recently been under $10-15... it's not like them jumping to $20-25 is really as bad as trying to track down a playset of ABU's
I like the progression of extended: It was as far back as Mirrodin. They changed it to be super standard (and everyone, including myself said it would be the death of extended. Guess we were right)...then they decided they needed a new format, so they made one as far back as Mirrodin...so we spent two years to go in a giant circle.
And for the folks who complain about card availability. Two years ago extended was almost exactly what Modern is now. PTQ attendance didn't drop. People will find ways to get the cards and play the format.
D'oh! I was looking forward to extended season as this would have been the first year I could play it. My card pool really only goes back to the Alara block so I didn't play last year because I didn't have anything from Lorwyn/Shadowmoor so I definitely don't have enough to play Modern. Oh well, I guess I'll be playing more limited this "offseason".
The irony here is pretty deep. The whole reason they got rid of Extended as it was, was because people didn't show up to play "Extended" they showed up for a PTQ that was extended. So they cut it down to increase excitment in the format, and now a year later, were back to the exact same situation.

The issue with Extended was that once it started to rotate, people ran from the format. Modern doesn't rotate, and so people feel comfortable "buying in."

But lots of people don't feel comfortable "buying in" to Modern yet because the banlist isn't stable.

Wizards states that Extended was only popular as a format because they forced it on the masses for a season every year. Rotation doesn't change that, nor did it have anything to do with it. It was never a huge rotation season to season and the format was cheap compared to legacy at the time.
I read this and felt ILL.
Modern is just such an awful format in so many levels. Hopefully the will ban / unban some more cards and get the format fixed first.

Well time to officially put extended away

Because extended PTQs had so many people right?
uhhhh.... right.
because extended was somehow better in this regard?
that are these people smoking? it's a brilliant decision!
Looks like it's time to wait for the updated B/R list!
