The undead monstrosity known as Skullbriar was formed when a necromancer and an elementalist entered into a grim pact. The mages wove their magics together in an overgrown cemetery, thinking it would bring them eternal life. Instead it fused them together into Skullbriar, the relentless, restless elemental of death.
Skullbriar is an absolutely beautiful card, in art and card design. Nils Hamm did a great job of making a card that’s got a solid green black feeling. Its also one of the coolest commander cards in that it lends itself to many variants and deck builds. I’ve seen Voltron variants, Zombie variants, everything! Skullbriar is a card that can play out in multiple ways which just makes it a cool general.
From a purely gameplay perspective: Skullbriar provides an immediate threat that often has time to build itself up and become a reoccurring thorn in an opponents side. By being a general it also means that you can keep an opening hand without many threats in it because you will always have access to him. While my specific deck does not focus solely on Skullbriar and often wins without him, he adds a useful dimension to the game.
TLDR: Skullbriar is f***ing cool and a good card.
Everytime I have seen a Skullbriar build it has either had a zombie theme, or been pure voltron. Those are swell and all, but Skullbriar is half elementalist!
This deck has a landfall sub-theme. When entering EDH I was deathly (hah get it?) scared about being mana screwed. The land ramp and landfall means that every land drop I make is useful and not a dead draw later in the game, while also convieniently giving me enough mana to play all the cool big expensive Timmy things and plays that make EDH fun.
I know with a landfall subtheme you would expect me to have some better land ramp or lands. Unfortunately part of the reason why I don't have some of the more fancy lands is that they are simply too expensive! Still, I don't mind the suggestions, Just please keep in mind that I'm a poor college student when suggesting some of these things!
The following are just cool and interesting card combos or things I think are underrated in EDH:
Deathrender + well anything! Deathrender is slick in that it's a decent power up artifact while making every creature a conundrum for your opponent. It turns the utility creatures in the deck into legitimate threats because dealing with them often means they will be replaced with something much more threatening. It helps the big bads replace themselves if they get killed. It's also extremely useful in that it helps you recover from a board wipe like Day of Judgement and the like.
Myojin of Night's Reach + Nath of the Gilt-Leaf Both of these are actually worth playing by themselves in EDH, but together they are deadly! Myojin provides mass hand discard which should guarantee your victory. Nath is a decent body that provides card advantage, but is almost never worth throwing a kill spell at. The interactions between the two are pretty obvious. You're a smart kid, I don't need to spell it out for you.
Realms Uncharted + Life from the Loam Again, your a smart cookie, I don't need to spell it out for you. The cool thing about Realm in multiplayer is you can almost always get a Bojuka Bog from the right opponent because everyone hates that guy that keeps abusing his graveyard unfairly.
More to come. I promise. I'm not that cool to have so many now.
Updates and edits explaining some card choices to follow. In the mean time, comments and criticism is welcome! My biggest thing in making this EDH deck was to make a fun semi competitive deck that is a blast to play and at least where that is concerned I think I did a great job.
Well you've come to the problem of my area and well me! I can't ****ing find a Kodama's Reach. No one I know has any that they are willing to trade. Its also something that's not really worth trying to order online so I haven't been able find it.
Actually very similar problem with Cabal Coffers and Urborg. I can't find any and my funds are a tad short to put them in. They are on my list of eventual changes to make this deck better.
But Explosive Vegetation is a VERY interesting card that I didn't even know existed! I will probably switch that in. Thank you for the idea.
[CARD]
Chancellor of the Tangle [/CARD] is a very strange card choice you might say. It used to be Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger but I found that such a card brings a LOT of hate in my meta. So much so that players make it their main priority to take me out once I have played it. Chancellor is a far less threatening bomby card that also gives me the opportunity to occasionally play Skullbriar on the first turn. I may test Nirkana Revanant instead, but for now Chancellor is probably going to stay as a nifty card that is useful and won't get me hated off the table.
Thank you for your comments and suggestions!

no Genisis Wave or Tooth and Nail? and an Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is always a welcome sight for getting all the black you need. Cabal Coffers is fun with that too.
Primeval Titan ensures that combo upon hitting the battlefield for ramp that allowed me a Genisis Wave for 31 on turn 6 for the win.
I actually have a Gen wave, I'm just having trouble thinking of what to take out for it instead. Any help here? Tooth and Nail is something that I'll probably never be able to find just because of how difficult it is to come across unfortunately.
Primeval Titan is on my shortlist of cards to put in, but my funds are a bit to small at the moment to afford him.
Thanks for your comments and criticism!

If you couldn't tell I hate greedy blue decks.
I think you shouldn't run Black Sun's Zenith.
The counters from that thing will remain on your skullbriar for ever and ever. Good luck casting him ever again.

a) Don't cast BSZ when Skullbriar is out... you are casting, you can work around the timing just a bit...
b) Sacrifice outlet first
c) Let him go to the graveyard, then return him to hand, with something like stitch together (non-threshhold), or buried alive or something...
With the landfall theme, you could probably benefit from Perilous Forays. Aside from being a great card on its own, it combos well with several of the black recurring creatures (reassembling skeleton), and especially with bloodghast, Rampaging Baloths (in the deck), and Seed the Land.
