I just discovered this card. I was taking a break from Magic when it was printed, so my knowledge of that era is sort of limited. Now I don't see this card being any good for Combo decks, but the Buyback seems like it would give a late game controlling deck some Library manipulation that is reusable and could provide advantage over time.
I tried it in Caw-Blade earlier, but it seemed too slow and expensive for that deck. I do not have the Tron lands so I can't test it there, but it seems like it might help that deck a little.
Just thought I should share this with anyone that might have a chance to see if this card is any good in the format, or if it's just another dud.

I think it might would be good with counterbalance if it were an instant. You can't really get the manipulation you need otherwise.
In a format with extremely predictable and repetitive decks it could force them to always take the second best idea, especially in a UB shell with Thoughtseize. not seeing it top 8 (it could I suppose), but a few games in the right metagame it could damage some records.

I don't think this is playable. It doesn't draw cards so why would you play this over serum vision? You actually see the same number of cards as serum vision except vision cycles. I don't think the fact that it has buyback makes up for how much worse it is in the early stages of the game which is where most of the key turns are.
While I earlier said this is no Sensei's Divining Top, the fact of the matter is the top is banned. While the top doesn't put things on the bottom, this is a format where fetch lands and other shuffle effects are available, and if it were legal it would be much, much better than this.
A much closer legal comparison would be with Crystal Ball, which in my opinion is better in almost every way than this horribly expensive sorcery-speed spell. And Crystal Ball isn't close to good enough to play.
Jace Beleren, while not actually filtering cards, just gets you through bad cards by drawing them instead of putting them on the bottom.
I love this card but man, I really wish they'd made it an instant. I think it might have been useable if that small change were made.
If they had made it instant it would way more than useful, it would probably be a blue staple. Being able to, at the end of you opponent's turn, tap 2U to look at and potentially dump 3 cards, and then do it again? It would be crazay good.
Maaayybe works with Counterbalance. But Sorcery speed ruins it since you have to guess which cc spell you want to leave on top. The lack of other instant speed cantrips probably ruin that plan though.
They are different effects. Filtering draws is still vey powerful and in some decks it's much much more useful than simple cantrips like think twice. Top is a very powerful card whether it draws cards or not

Precisely. Popping this at the end of your opponent's turn (aka if it was instant speed) can make sure you get that last combo piece, or last tron land, or whatever 2 turns earlier than you might have. If you had a deck that could afford to mulligan in to Leyline of Anticipation then you could do some damage. Card advantage is an extremely important factor, but a large part of the reason it is such is because it gives you what you need when you need it. A faster version of MS would do this very well, making sure that your draw phase was as profitable as possible.
Where there is a will there is a way, scepter + quicken + mystic speculation + counter balance, creates a top like effect over and over again, alot of cards but the effect is the same plus you get to draw a card out of it.
A 3-card combo requiring 5 mana per turn is a lot worse than 1 card and 1 mana per turn.
If something requires 4 cards, it had better win you the game on the spot.

...and honestly I think we all wish they made more stuff instant. I do think there'd be more broken cards then though.

I don't see any other use for it. "Library manipulation that is reusable and could provide advantage over time" is a better job for Jace Beleren.

But even if it was an instant? No way. Think Twice is better. Card filtering without card advantage pales in comparison to straight draw.

At instant it's absolutely viable for control. At its current state it is mediocre to meh.
