There have been a couple BW Control decks popping up since the spoiling of Sorin, Lord of Innistrad. The thought process behind omitting blue is solid; standard is very aggressive at the moment and Mana Leak doesn't get the job done as well as it used to. Players are finding that discard, like Distress and Despise, are working better than a counterspell.
One of the first intriguing lists was created and posted by GFabs himself on 02/07 over at SCG:
I gave NeoItems' V2.0 deck a spin tonight at my local FNM and I've gotta say, it feels very powerful. Although I missed my trusty Snapcaster Mages, I always seemed to have an answer to anything my opponents were attempting to do.
NeoItems has released an updated list in the comments of his original BW Control article. He also mentions that an additional BW Control article should be posted over at http://60cards.com sometime this week.
A word of caution: it seems that this deck punishes poor mulligans more-so than its blue counterparts. I feel like it should go without saying (and NeoItems speaks about this in the comments below his article), but after you know what your opponent is playing, you should attempt to visualize how the game will play out a few turns in advance.
"I have been playing against delver a bit lately. The match is not terrible, and I feel BW is definitely a favorite. Traft can be a real pain though and you have to keep him in mind when looking at your starting hand. Pay attention to your curve and think about how the general line of play is going to go down (both you and him) If you hand looks good for the first 3 turns you are more than likely going to have a smooth run at taking it down, even if the game moves differently than you had planned for." - NeoItems
Good luck and have fun with this list. It's a blast to play!
I noticed in testing that my Lingering Souls would usually be cast for five mana and four spirits and that they were rarely used on the offensive. I decided to try cutting them (GASP!) for three MD Curse of Death's Hold and a Swamp. Also, this is probably my SB for Game Day. I'm expecting Delver, Zombies, Wolf Run, Reanimator, Tokens, and a splash of UBx Control. I need to get some time in against RDW, but I feel that Batterskull, Ratchet Bomb, and Pristine Talisman should do me some good.
I've been developing BW tokens but the deck losses to UW humans and UW delver. And I've tried Frites but it's also not that good against super fast decks, so I've combined both and switched to control. And this is what I've come up with.
I've kept Lingering Souls and Doomed Traveler (from my BW Tokens deck) as they are essential in Altar's Reap and Culling Dais mechanism. The latter is great for card advantage and always helps me find Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite.
Life's Finale is such a great card for ensuring that the opponent won't be able to cast his powerful creatures. So far, when I'm able to cast two Life's Finale in a game (specially against aggro decks), it's almost an assured victory for me, even a single casting of this card has a big impact on the game. Day of Judgment has also been great.
But it's Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite that has the best impact on this deck. This deck is hard to beat when this card is on the field, another plus is the Lingering Souls on one's hand or even in the graveyard, the two cards work so well with one another.
The Pros:
This deck can own on card advantage, I can't recount how many games I've had where I only have less than 20 cards on my library and my bombs already on the field. Like I've said, I have had no problem -so far- looking for an Elesh Norn, Life's Finale, DOJ, Lingering Souls, or a much needed land as Culling Dais and Altar's Reap draws a lot of cards for me.
The Cons:
Games will take longer to resolve and there's always a chance that a super aggro deck could finish you early, but in my experience -so far- I've still manage to win a lot of games even at 5 or less life. Life's Finale, Doomblade, DOJ, and Elesh Norn has been there for me.
Results:
BTW This are the only matches I included as they are the decks used in today's standard.
Against 2 RG Kessig Ramp Decks: Out of 10 matches won 7.
Their deck is so weak against Elesh Norn and Life's Finale that out of 10 matches I've won 7, should have won 8 but I misplayed Elesh Norn and cost me one game.
My opponent forgot to sideboard creatures. He only has 4 creatures on his deck and all of them late game bombs, Life's Finale made sure those biggies will never see the light of day, I even decided to sideboard all my DOJs and opt for four Altar's Reap as Life's Finale seems to eliminate his late game threats in the first game. His Liliana, of the Veil proved useless as Lingering Souls has flashback and I have no problem discarding it. Troubled by Karn Liberated on both games as he twice exiled my Elesh Norn, but I already have Spirits on the field and Lingering Souls on my graveyard, so I still manage to pull the win.
I have yet to test this against UW Delver, UB Zombies, Frites, Tempered Steel, and other RG Ramp builds (those that neglects Titans and focus on burn, Huntmaster, and weenie strategies). So I can't still conclude that this deck will do good on Standard tournaments but the results so far shows that it has potential
I decided not to include Sorin as he is more aggro than control, also I'm thinking of a better alternative for Culling Dais, the card is good but the sacrifice is too much at times. So any artifacts, instants, and sorceries to add. What would you suggest?
B/w Control, An archetype that I have attempted to make before but sadly failed dismally due to fairly poor deck construction and an unfriendly meta. However after a few buddies of mine headed over to our playgroups HQ and I realized all of our U/W duels where in use I was in a conundrum being a control player at heart. After some thought about the current local meta: delver heavy of course as well as a fair amount of pod, FRights, Some U/b infect (which rather annoyingly uses corrupted resolve to great effect) a rogue lists, Kessig and the usual FNM Jank, we came to the realization that a deck that can provide a strong counter to Aggro as well as walkers would be worth an attempt. Now I could have built U/B control which has been seeing a few top 8 showings but I have a few problems to U/b control. While it does have ample spot removal and sac effects to deal with cards like Thrun, the last troll and Geist of Saint Traft it is weak in a few areas compared to U/W control. U/W control can more reliable deal with Artifacts, and planeswalkers with Oblivion Ring as well as having a far more reliable sweeper Day of Judgement, Both decks have weakness's that are not a problem in B/W control because it sacrifices the Blue. Losing blue is major as it wrecks one of controls traditional strengths which is card draw. The draw that we have access to is far less efficient then what blue does and while I could go into it I think you can probably figure the cards out. I will however explain my choice in draw further in. I think that by running sheer
volume of cards we can mitigate the negative effects of a loss of card draw. Here is the list that I have so far.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now it is time for me to do some Esplainin, I am going to start with cards that I have omitted and my reasons for doing so.
Omitted cards.
Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
Now Sorin is a very decent planeswalker with the ability to provide a last impact on the board. His +1 allows him to both protect himself (a key component to any walker) as well as to generate board presence and to play around your sweepers. He also can provide an emblem that is very useful to aggro strategies. And of course his Ult can be just plain nuts if you can crack it. That being said with the type of list I have here I don't feel he is going to be more useful then one of the cards I have included and I feel he is fairly weak in a control list.
Liliana of the Veil
One of my favorite walkers. In the top 4 for sure. However she has no place in this type of deck because you need to be able to generate positive card advantage or have a deck that can utilize the yard to make her worthwhile in a control list. While an outstanding card, She isn't right for this list.
Lingering Souls
Love the Card. That being said in a list that is focusing on board control Via sweepers It doesn't belong especially in a list not running alters reap. While the combination of alters reap and Lingering Souls in decent I feel that if you are going to be running Souls you may as well be running more token generation and at that point just play W/B tokens.
Alter's Reap
Not enough creatures. Although if you choose to run a more token based list Alters reap and Archon of Justice wouldn't be a bad piece of Synergy.
Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
Weak without a high creature concentration, I feel you need creatures to swing with her.
Tragic Slip
Again not enough creatures or sack affects.
Unburial Rites
I don't feel I have enough creatures or enough way to dig for it. Although it does synergize well with the amount of sweepers. It may end up as a two of after testing.
If there are any other cards you wonder why I am not running please ask! I may have just forgotten about it or there might be an actual reason, also feel free to tell me your opinions on those cards.
And now for some of the questionable cards that I am running
Nihil Spellbomb
In the current meta maindecking this as a 3 of is not an issue, at best it wins or makes a large impact (vs nearly every top deck, consider it against anything with snapcaster) and at worst it draws you a card
Revoke Existence
In the current meta is not a bad thing. Vs. anything with a sword or Wurmcoil Engine it can give you a solid shot game one and can be boarded out game 2 if needed and also deals with Enchantments such as Oblivion RingAngelic Destiny
Geth, Lord of the Vault
Questionable for sure and even I have my doubts at the moment. However, I think with the amount of removal and board wipes in the deck it will be a solid choice. Example, Playing vs Delver. Sweep board turn 4, play Geth, Lord of the Vault They could very easily have had a Delver of Secrets, Snapcaster Mage, Geist of Saint Traft. With Geth, Lord of the Vault I can begin to produce a large board presence and take advantage of creatures in there yard. I am not sure as of yet if the additional Mill done by Geth, Lord of the Vaultwill help or hurt me in game.
Gideon Jura
I hope you are not wondering why I am running this power house but you may be wondering why he is a four of. Gideon Jura is never a bad draw in control in my experience. Even if you have one out and are fogging with him once they beat him down you have another in reserve, Against control he can dodge sweepers and if they Drop an Oblivion Ring you have another in reserve!
Sever the Bloodline
Good card because it is an exile not a destroy and can be flashed back late game. Also handles multiple tokens from cards like Lingering souls recurring zombies like Gravecrawler or anything with Undying.
Army of the Damned
To sum this card up in a word, DUDES!. To be honest the suggestion of this card began as a joke but upon further thought it could be a good win condition in a control deck like this. At the very least it is funny. And even if I resolve it once, someone will be pissed.. and I will laugh.... a lot.
Elixer of Immortality
Heal's me for 5. And allows me to reshuffle threats and creatures while reducing my land percentage late game. Worth a shot.
Thanks for Reading guys! If you have any input, questions or comment please let me know. Also if you are wondering about my game plan against a certain Archetype let me know! I look forward to any responses or questions from my fellow players
Solemn Simulacrum added some more reliable mana fixing as well as additional draw. Go for the Throat More low costing removal. May replace with sac effects such as Tribute to Hunger Grave Titan A great card although I am not sure how effective it will be as a one of.
I've been trying to find a deck that can abuse the instant speed discard of Scroll of Griselbrand. It with Sun Titan nearly locks the opponent out of the game, excluding flashback and instants, once they have no hand. Would B/W control be a good place for this? Also, adding Grand Abolisher in, completes the lock.

I tell ppl it aint control, they say it is, :S I managed to get a foil Sorin in the sealed so I made this deck... Has been quite successful in my meta except for one deck, a mass appeal+burn at the stake token deck. :S

Build Explanation:
I've kept Lingering Souls and Doomed Traveler (from my BW Tokens deck) as they are essential in Altar's Reap and Culling Dais mechanism. The latter is great for card advantage and always helps me find Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite.
My experience with Sphere of the Suns and Palladium Myr as mana fixers were excellent so far.

Results:
BTW This are the only matches I included as they are the decks used in today's standard.
Against 2 RG Kessig Ramp Decks: Out of 10 matches won 7.
So many times where my opponents would cast a Huntmaster of the Fells on turn three but - so far - I always seem to have a Doom Blade, Day Of Judgment, or a Life's Finale waiting. There are times when their Primeval Titans are relegated to Kessig Wolf Run or Inkmoth Nexus fetching.
Their deck is so weak against Elesh Norn and Life's Finale that out of 10 matches I've won 7, should have won 8 but I misplayed Elesh Norn and cost me one game.
Against 1 UW Human Deck: Out of 3 matches won 2.
First game was a nightmare scenario. Opponent cast Champion of the Parish, followed by 2 Doomed Traveler on next turn, and Mirran Crusader next, then finished with 2 Honor of the Pure. I was only able to answer with a Palladium Myr and lands.
The next games where easy as Doomed Traveler and Lingering Souls defended my life early and feed my Culling Dais and along with Sphere of the Suns, allowed me to find and cast Life's Finale and Day of Judgment, controlling the board. And once Elesh Norn is on the field couped with flashbacked Lingering Souls, it's pretty much over.
Against 1 UB Control: Won all 2 games.

Nihil Spellbomb
In the current meta maindecking this as a 3 of is not an issue, at best it wins or makes a large impact (vs nearly every top deck, consider it against anything with snapcaster) and at worst it draws you a card
Revoke Existence

Sorin's Vengeance
Does 10, heals for 10, Tutorable off of Rune-Scarred Demon.
Life's Finale
The ability to remove three cards from a deck without Unburial Rites is amazing. And even with decks running Unburial Rites you can Synergize with your Nihil Spellbomb's and game two with your Surgical Extraction's
Ghost Quarter in the Sideboard
Against deck's running Inkmoth Nexus or any type of Kessig list being able to go up to a 4 of Ghost Quarter is going to prove relevant

Grave Titan A great card although I am not sure how effective it will be as a one of.
I have thought about adding a red splash for a bit of card draw Desperate Ravings Faithless Looting and cards to assist in kill that work with the control theme like Red sun's Zenith Stensia Bloodhall. Very light splash.
