As a Stompy player, I loved the UG weenie concept and, after seeing the great deck NoDestiny built here (http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=365366), I tried to begin to build mine.
My contribution (or not): no card but the general has cc greater than 2.
Any other ideas? Other options/bombs/combos I'm not seeing?
Please mind you, for now I'd like to keep it pauper (common only) and with 2cc or less. A good exercise huh?
I see you're following up the other pauper version, but I'd liek to reiterate that there are several highly tuned Edric decks on the forums, while most are not tailored to pauper, they will still have good discussion and card choices you can get ideas from.
Hi bobthefunny, I saw your post, and Donald's, gma's, Soggy Pizza Pockets', Sandwich's and some others. I will comment about all the commons I saw. Mind you, all these decks are awesomely tuned... with rares. I can only take some ideas and try them to tune my deck, as I didn't find any other (than NoDestiny's) tuned pauper deck, if you have any source, please let me know.
Like: Orochi Leafcaller - mana filter, good. Snap - free boomerang is always good. Will see if I ditch something for this. Envelop - good counter choice, maybe better than some 1cc counters I already chose. Will test it. Merchant Scroll - OMG, I forgot this staple, will put one Snapback - 'free' spells always deserves some attention. Will test. Nature's Claim - will ditch another scavenger folk or so for this one. Miscalculation - looks good, almost a second mana leak... will try. Quirion Ranger - I really dunno... Maybe I ditch an enchantment or artifact destroying creature to put this one. Well, let's try it.
Don't like: Priest of Titania - Not for now. I guess this will be mana-flood in the late game. Waterfront Bouncer - No boomerangs but Snap for now, I'll see if I can live without them. But in a creature... I might change my mind. Capsize - MVP in slow decks, not in this one IMO. Pestermite - if I forget this 3cc thing (I know, this might weel be 2cc), this will be a staple. Man O' War - Capsizes a critter but it's 3cc. Aether Adept - 3cc, a worst Man-o-War, not for now. Spiketail Drakeling - awesome counter/creature, but it's 3cc. Brainstorm - are you kidding? I will draw so many cards in turn 4-5 that I can't see use for it. Consign to Dream - looks not good for me. Into the Roil - I don't buy this kind of cards (unless it's free, like Snap), specially in this deck. Swarm, counter, destroy and bounce. Choose 2 or 3. Boomerang - ditto. Memory Lapse - Weak counter IMO. Ninja of the Deep Hours - no evasion, and Edric buys me cards anyway. Force Spike - Lamer than any other 1cc counter I put here, not for now. Crop Rotation - not enough non-basic lands to justify it. Rampant Growth - The only ramps allowed here are Elves and Petal, sorry. Well, maybe Land Grant, since it's free... Repeal - Boomerang, no. Repulse - ditto. Rushing River - Double boomerang for 2U+land, good, but 3cc.
Didn't try: Cobbled Wings - gave up using it, about two thirds of my critters have some evasion. Land Grant - I don't believe it's worth it, specially given the elves I kept. If it does not work I can sac the elves and put this and more counters. Snapback - Snap looks nicer, and I need to play the deck to see if I need more boomerangs. Dang, I need to play the deck, period. Nature's Claim - 4 life to the opponent can be the difference between winning and losing. I rather pay 1 more mana with Naturalize, thanks. Metathran Soldier - shadow vs flying is a draw, I prefer flying for now. Besides, almost other evasive 2cc creatures have more punch or abilities. Escape Artist - ditto Envelop - no more slots for counters, 12 is the number right now.
And remembering the cards that didn't make it yet, but I might consider with time and tweaking: Brass Gnat - Doesn't even attack in early game. Uktabi Drake - Echo doesn't help in the first, say, 4 turns. Zodiac Rabbit - P3K is hard to find Zodiac Rooster - ditto Wu Scout - ditto (but I'd LOVE to have one of these replacing a vanilla flying... my Chinese Glasses of Urza ) Wu Light Cavalry - ditto Keep Watch - 3cc but huge card advantage... Gust-Skimmer - artifact creatures can be disenchanted, etc. Arcbound Stinger - ditto Pili-Pala - ditto Hovermyr - ditto Spined Thopter - ditto, and expensive Spire Golem - ditto, and even more expensive Winged Coatl - Ambush viper does it better IMO (3cc is almost a no-no for me in this deck...) Cobbled Wings - if I runned less counters I'd try this to make Edric or Llanowar fly... Flight Spellbomb - why did I put this card here? Feldon's Cane - if things go too fast... well, if I don't kill the board till I'm decked I deserve to die anyway Simic Growth Chamber - does this land fit in this deck?
Let's start to tune!!
Please give some feedback. Thanks!
PS: (Edit) Is Scent of Ivy a good try to be used as a bomb?
PS2: (Edit2) Strength in Numbers is another bomb, will test it too. Now where?
In my Child of Alara pauper deck I had this doubt too, magiccards.com is worng. Thanks anyway
You are indeed right, probably has to do with the weird rarity distribution at that time.
Your changes are looking quite good, but I'm not a huge fan of Crown of Vigor. I think either of the two pump spells you listed at the bottom would be better than it.
About the bombs, I'd like to have 3 but will stay in 2 and play the deck before I try more.
Definitely Might of the Masses is the best and will stay. Strength in Numbers is 2cc and counts only attacking critters. Crown of Vigor counts all creatures but works on Mothdust only. Scent of Ivy will always give me +7/+7 max, but it's instant, 1cc and I can Dizzy Spell it, just as the Might of the Masses.
For this reason (cost, synergy and instant speed), I'll ditch Crown of Vigor and add Scent of Ivy. My gut feeling is that the Crown is still better, but let's use the brain first.
And I'll get a Wu Scout as soon as I get, just for pimp and fun
Some other shadow options that didn't make it for now:
Drifter il-Dal Paying U every upkeep? No thanks. Even Uktabi Drake looks better... Thalakos Seer Costs UU, not good in this deck. Besides, no additional ability. Thalakos Sentry Costs 1U, vanilla 1/2 shadow, will be in the deck as soon as I think it fits.
This deck looks really cool Alexandre, do you mind if I link it to my Edric Primer as an option for people looking to play something a little different?
On the cards you are passing on I understand most of them but I think Preist of Titania is being underestimated. I know your curve is very low but with the card draw you have available and the number of elves that this and many other EDH decks run I think you'll have a way to use the mana and she should reliably be tapping for more than G which makes her well above the curve.
Hi Donald, by all means link it! It's always good to be in a Edric primer anyway
If I put Elvish Lyrist back replacing the Druid Lyrist and considering the Mothdust Changeling and the General, I have 13 Elves... OK, I'll try it. But I'll run 31 lands, will ditch an Island (everything else looks so important at this time, you know...) and see what happens. OK, deck updated again, version 1.4.
Thanks for your suggestion and keep the comments going!
Timberland Ruins Seafloor Debris
I don't like. It's a one shot fix, and dies. For that it enters the battlefield tapped. Essentially, you can't use it the turn it comes out, and if you ever do need to fix, you set yourself back a land to do it.
Seacliff can be alright, if that's what you want.
You have 14 elves (not counting the general). How much better will the Wirewood Pride be over a Giant Growth?
I think Strength in Numbers will be overall better for the aggressive play. If you're looking at defensively, then the Pride will work better than the scent of ivy (Typically I find I'm holding blue spells on an opponent's turn).
Will test Strength in Numbers and Soaring Seacliff. Apart from this and some pimp factors (P3K creatures replacing some others), I guess that's it. Or not?
- avg cmc = 1,41, not bad at all!
- less 2cc creatures, more pimp & horsemanship welcome.
- according to my math it should be 11 forest and 18 islands but I'm afraid being forest screwed
- now that I have 13 counters and 5 bouncers, and some other defense, so I think I won't miss Time Walks that much from this version on...
Are you having any issues with other people getting too much value out of Edric's ability? If so this might be a good place to try out Spore Frog and Constant Mists. Those changes look like a nice upgrade and that average cc is crazy!
Bob, thanks for the feedback, and yeah, Avoid Fate is another 'crappy treasure' I found but it's good protecting Edric. Better than some blue counters, by the way!
Hi Donald, the changes are mostly your fault when lacking Time Walks, bouncers are needed. Besides I was experiencing a kinda creature flood in my hands Thanks, as always!
For now there's no weenie EDHs around here. Constant Mists will be tried if needed (consider it in a maybeboard, with cards like Feldon's Cane, for instance). Spore Frog can't be tutored with commons, to it's weaker in my deck IMO.
Hi Donald, the changes are mostly your fault when lacking Time Walks, bouncers are needed. Besides I was experiencing a kinda creature flood in my hands Thanks, as always!
Hey now you can't blame me, you made the list pauper.:p
The creatures are a bit slow costing 1U. Although I wasn't able to ditch Wu Scout because I like it and all remaining 2cmc dorks are quite useful IMO.
About Night Soil - the game is supposed to be so fast I won't be able to use it.
Is chatter of the squirrels playable here? Gives two guys for one card. The fact that you get two lets you get in for 1 even against a single blocker, plus with a few bounce spells it seems likely someone is open for smacking on. This deck is like...5 dollars without edric (maybe a lil more, mainly mean for the random dudes, I think I own basically everything but a few of the 1/1 flyers which cost like 3-8 cents on the site I'm looking at).
I'm considering putting edric together myself, simply because it's silly cheap and funny to win with 1/1s. I don't like taking extra turns, which led me here to pauper edric, but cards like unified will or even overrun (expensive, but seems like it can end games...I suppose triumph of the hordes is probably just better, but both seem good). I'll see if I can resist the uncommon pull, since being pauper is attractive.
edit: how about shinen of life's roar? It helps you finish someone off, draws off a naked player, or, if somehow everyone has defense, lets you draw a ton at his expensive. Not good enough?
Chatter of the Squirrel is not good. No evasion on the token... Shinen of Life's Roar English might be good if I didn't rely on my evasive dorks. But maybe if I have too many elves on the board, many forestwalks against a UW deck... This card deserves to be tested, and I will as soon as I get one, but I really don't know what to ditch (suggestions?). I miss more any kinda bomb like Might of the Masses tho...
What about one with nature? Flying men into one with nature seems good, but it's hard to tell exactly how the deck plays out. Reminds me a bit of sigil of sleep.
Just how all in is the deck? It seems like if a wrath sneaks by you you basically fold, right? Is the deck fun to play, or is it a bit too repetitive? It's funny to play flying men into cloud sprite into cloud pirates, but it doesn't offer much variance. Do you just completely dominate the game if you win and do nothing if you lose, or is there any way to crawl back into the game (doesn't seem like it really)?
Still undecided as to whether I like the concept. We don't have much as far as aggression in our group, but I don't want to introduce a deck that is completely unfun to play against.
1classydude, first of all (a late) thanks!
Unfortunately One with Nature is uncommon.
As far as control goes, I have 13 counters and some bouncers. If someone wraths me and I can protect Edric after the eventual counter war, sometimes I don't scoop.
This deck is fast enough to win at a good rate in 1v1, a little bit weaker in multiplayer. As Donald says in his Edric primer, This deck is for you if you like playing Legacy decks like Señor Stompy (I have one with 8 forests and 1 Berserk, yeah! ). And rely almost 100% on Edric on the table to win.
If this is unfun for you, you should see d0su's Child of Alara deck (amazing and the complete opposite of my Edric weenie), or my Teneb my man deck. More control, graveyard abuse, and the like. I like both styles so I keep both.
I think Pauper EDH allows you to enjoy each deck's flavor and velocity, given the budget needed. I do this way, why don't you?
As a Stompy player, I loved the UG weenie concept and, after seeing the great deck NoDestiny built here (http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=365366), I tried to begin to build mine.

Total $11.92 just for these. Not that pauper huh?
Seriously, I guess $30-35 is enough to buy the unpimped deck.

Cheers!
